Replacement of touchscreen! - JAM, MDA Compact, S100 General

Does anybody have a manual for the replacement of a touch screen, and an adress to buy touch-screen for MDA Compact !

try ebay...i saw some touchscreens for $20 AUD, which is cheap...
Though dont know how to replace it, looks HARD.
whitemoo.

Thanks! I hope someone has a online manual...

Wel if its anything like the xda2 then replacing the screen is very easy as its just a few screws and a ribbon cable. I had a broken screen xdII and took it apart to see how hard it was to reinstall myself, it was very easy cos like i said it was a few screws and a ribbon cable.

There's a guide with pics in pdf format in this forum, just search for it.

Its very simple as long as you are patient and you don't force anything while trying to open up the phone.
I have worked on couple of Imate Jams and wizards with out a manual without breaking anything.
I have seen the manual on the wiki I believe....
BTW I would suggest using one of those ebay cellphone repair kits that come with the plastic tool to open the phone that helps alot.

Replacing Screen + frame

Hi,
Broke my screen a couple of days ago. I have a lot of information and programs installed on my universal and dont want to install everything again.
I have therefore bought a used universal and I wonder If I will be able to replace the screen + frame without hardresetting the unit. I have downloaded the service manual but I couldnt find any info regarding that. If any one have any useful tips on replacing screen + frame plaese let me know. Do I have to take the phone apart or is it possible to replace screen and frame only by loosing the screen by the hinge?
Is this a difficult task, (looks easy in the manual)?
Thanks in advance,
Miki
Just need the right tools. Not too difficult and you need an antistatic arm band. Goodluck! How bout selling me your extra mainboard?
first post here but i just found the site.
I broke the screen on my o2xda exec and took it too my local Carphone Warehouse. I am not one of their customers anymore but they looked the repiar up on their system and it showed that the repair cost was going to be £40. I authorised repair and got a written copy of the cost and confirmed the cost about 10 times as i didnt belive him. The phone went off to HTC's repair centre and came back three weeks later with a new screen and a complete upgraded rom. I paid £40 job done.
Might be worth a try if you have one near you.
No prob.
All parts will be for sale as soon as Im ready.
Is it possible to switch screen with frame without hardreseting?
And is it possible to switch screen without taking the phone apart?

There is a way to just open up the just screen part of the clamshell but you risk breaking your flex cable but it can be done if you are really careful. I dont recommend doing it this way though.
I suggest you follow the instructions as per manual by opening up the keyboard part first and then clamshell then replacing the screen. It's not too difficult. Don't forget the anti-static thing so you don't mess up the mainboard.
Also, you don't have to hardreset to replace your screen..dont forget the anti-static thing!
Please reserve the mainboard for me...Thanks!
I wouldnt mind the flex cable!
Its easiest to leave this in the plastic housing, thus most of the actual shell (top lid, hinge, bottom keyboard housing part etc.
Let me know if you have this spare as my touchscreen doesnt work now and im desperate!
I'd be interested in the camera flash (flashlight)
IF/when you're ready to part out the remainder of your device, I'm in desperate need of a replacement camera flash (flashlight).
-Kevin.
Please let us know how your replacement went. Still would like to purchase that MB from you.

'hope this'll help you guyz
you'll only need a small torx screwdriver (like the one all cell phones use), a small " X " screwdriver, a small flat screwdriver and a whole bag of skills ;-)
nice link!

digitizer (touch screen) replacement

Hi guys this is my first post (so please be gentle )
I had a hermes with WM 6 working great until my toddler got his hands on it and now the touchscreen doesnt work (looks like its caused by large dent in the centre of the screen), I've had a look around and found the problem to be with the digitizer itself. I was thinking of replacing it myself with this I found on ebay
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI....m=260193961530&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=016
Just wondering if anyone had purchased one of these and had any feedback as to if they actually work and any tips on fitting it
I would give it a shot as its not to expencive and could save your phone.
I just like the way they bundle in a kit to take the phone apart but ask you to make sure what colour the connectors are on the inside of the phone before purchaseing :-D
thanks for your reply, i may just go ahead and give it a go then, I could post the pictures or a guide if its any use to anyone? Other than that wish me luck (i may need it)
The touchscreen on my Cingular 8525 stopped working today, so I'm faced with a similar dillema. I saw the digitizers for 16-20 dollars online, but I've heard it's safer to just replace the entire screen since you have to seperate the screen from the digitizer with an exacto blade. Either that or I'll have to send it to pocketpctechs and be without a phone for 5 days. Thankfully I can still navigate the phone with the jogwheel + dpad.
I found this video showing how to disassemble your 8525 if you're interested.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=zsljpn74SW0
well just to follow up, the replacement touchpad arrived yesterday it was well packaged and even included a CD containing instructions on how to replace the digitizer itself. I removed the old digitizer (using the edge of a tape measure as it was the only thing i had thin enough) and installed the new one and I have to say im well impressed, all works as it should
A bit of advice though, try and use a soldering iron that is less than 15W as I nearly burned through the contacts but other than that i have my baby back yey

Just fixed my Digitizer

I have just got my replacement digitizer in the mail 2day from Hong Kong and installed it just now, all is working perfectly as new again. I did a hard reset when the touch screen was first playing up, so I have lost all my themes, settings etc but luckily my office docs etc are still intact.
Anyhow, I made a video on how to replace the touch screen, its only quick as I did not go from the disasembly part, as there is already videos and tutorials on this, so I just documented on the actual digitizer replacement, which is actually basic 2-5mins work, but I thought a vid would be good for any noobs needing it in the future.
Once I edit it all up I will post the video here.
If anyone needs help on replacing the digitizer just ask. DON'T be tricked into buying the LCD + Digitizer if you only need the touch screen, as it is very easy to do without the lcd, though some ppl disagree.
Thanks for reading, thread will be updatd with Vid asap.
Hi X86
I have a crack on the upper plastic case, thats prob. why I have dirt showing on screen. In your opinion where is it located and can I clean it ?
It seems as if (if the crack is on the actual original housing, not just a add-on case) that dirt/dust has fallen down inbetween the digitizer and the LCD, so you can see it through the touchscreen right?
This is fairly simple to fix, you will either need to patch up the crack with silicone or something (best from the inside so it does'nt look messy) OR buy yourself a whole nw housing which cost about US15-$20.
Then just pull your elf/in apart and use cotton tips and wipes to thoroughly clean the LCD and insides.
If you need any help, just let me know via PM or here.
?Good Luck!
Thanks
That was my feeling, now I just need courage to take apart the casing (either repair or replace )
Thanks for bringing up this issue in the forum and extending your hand to others.
I appreciate it alot.
Hi x86
I have read the sticky for disassembling the elf. Can you tell me if it's necessary to unscrew anything and remove the rear speaker in order to remove the front panel ?
Edit: I think I found the answer in the next pics, the 4 screws attach to the front panel, right ?
Hi, i've just entered the world of winmo. i've recently wrecked my Elfin. But i can't seem to figured it out whether it's the LCD or the digitizer is broken...
1) my Elfin's screen turns to white with a few red and black stripes on the lower left corner, it doesn't react to any touch gesture.
2) i can still activesync the device and seems that my SD card is still working, i could copy out my PIMcontacts...thank goodness
3) the alarm still rings the next morning, i assume my device is still operating, of course now i've taken out the battery.
4) i've ask the phone shop for repair enquiries and they said that the replacement parts are not for retail selling in my country, Malaysia... so it needs to send back my Elfin to OEM and takes about 3 weeks time and cost around USD $ 130 bucks....
5) my friends told me it wasn't worth it, thus i was thinking of looking for help online and finally i found this thread...
6) can anyone offer few pieces of info? i thank you 1st.

That sounds like both a Digitizer and LCD issue.
Red and white strips is caused by the screen, while the phone not sensing your fingers is caused by digitizer.
But you still managed to use something like mymobiler to rescue your stuff right?
Yeah, you're in Malaysia right? In Singapore, to get this items, we have to get it off ebay or dealextreme.com.
But be careful with this, it void warrenty.
If you send it to HTC service centre, it may cost $160> Singapore dollars.
Cheers,
Jeremy

Help with Wizard repair diagnostic

My wizard was slammed with a trunk lid. The clear screen is fine, no cracks, the housing has a scratch where it hit the lid. The lcd screen is half ok. Now I said all that to say: I bought a screen, here is the link:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...em=&sspagename=STRK:MEWNX:IT&salenotsupported
Now that I have this, it doesn't look like this is what I need.
Here is a pic of the phone turned on.

I can use it with what I can see. So it works fine, its the window that I can't see that is the problem.
Can someone look at this pic and tell me what I should have gotten?
Thanks

My understanding is, You got a wrong part. What you got is a digitizer, it is the one used for touch only and will not be suitable for the type of repair you need. What you need is LCD. The screen on most resistive screen devices consists of 2 parts - 1 LCD and 1 Digitizer attached to LCD by a layer of fine gel and connected by a flex cable, then the whole assembly is connected by a flex to the mainboard.
My recommendation would be to purchase the entire assembly, get a service manual and replace, however, if you had problems deciding what part you need to repair your Wizard, I say take it to the professional.

The way someone is opening and attempting to repair their Wizard on that video is what keeps me employed. Watching someone open their device with screwdrivers and then attempting to re-connect the flex and forgetting half of the screws gives me the creeps, not even sure whether to laugh or cry. Would love to see the repair actually working, rather than someone claiming they found the way to do something without demonstrating any result.

Tutorial for replacing Flex Ribbon Cable?

HI all, I bought my HD2 just over a month ago on Ebay.. love the phone but just 2 days ago the screen started to become unresponsive.. I got angry pretty quick as I just spent $150 on this phone last month, I found a temporary fix which was just press the red end call button very hard to get my screen working again, it works but sometimes I have to do this 2-3 times a day and it just reminds me that this is only temporary and I should do something about it. My phone is out of warranty so and I found the flex ribbon cable very cheap on Ebay. However, I've NEVER repaired a phone befor. I can not for the life of me find a tutorial on how to fix the flex cable ribbon at all. I searched XDA but also could not find a tutorial on how to replace the flex cable ribbon, I believe I read that it wasn't that hard so I'm not too intimidated. I will also purchase the tools needed to do this on Ebay.
But does anyone know of a tutorial on how to replace the flex cable ribbon? Keep in mind I've never repaired a phone befor or anything really. I don't think it will be that hard if I have some pictures or a video though. If you could PLEASE help me I will be internally grateful as my only other option is to buy a new phone and I'm in a terrible position to do so at the moment. Thank you
Your problem is digitizer & cable to LCD.
Digitizer is not that expensive & comes with cable as not separable.
For someone with no experience the HD2 can be hard to repair.
First you need to know what version LCD DIGI you have as have a clip socket version or solder version.
Loads of info & tutorials on XDA & many sad tales of more problems caused during the repair.
You may be better selling as is for repair but if decide to try yourself read up & ask first rather than after & take extreme care ...
