hey all
I recently got my charmer back from HTC, it was refusing to read memory cards. in the slip that came back with it, it stated that they had replaced the mainboard.
i promptly proceeded to open the device up (without voiding the warranty of course! ) and went and lifted up one of the 'RF plates' that is on the mainboard, found that, underneath that board, as with the previous (broken mainboard that i had before that wouldnt read memory cards) under that exact same RF shield was empty solder points.
now, i've noticed that the specs otherwise of the prophet and charmer are more or less IDENTICAL.
BOTH use the Omap 850 Processor
BOTH have 128/64 ROM/RAM
BOTH have same dimensions of 108 x 58 x 18 mm (HxWxD)
BOTH use same same 240x320 64k colour screen
differences are:
Prophet has WI-FI, Charmer does NOT
Prophethas 2.0mp camera, Charmer has 1.3
Prophet is available in G4 and G3 'flavours', Charmer has 'one type for all'
the reason for this thread is the following: I would like to obtain/install an AKU 3.x update for my Charmer as I have noticed considerable differences between AKU 2.0 and AKU 3.x on a different handset. mainly in that AKU 3.x looks considerably better, performs considerably better and is just generally a lot better than AKU 2.0.
my *theory* is: if i was to download a copy of the AKU 3.3.07 ASERG ROM update for the Prophet, REMOVE the bootloader section of the ROM update, and either:
1) Replace the bootloader with that from a Charmer ROM
2) ONLY flash the OS partition of the ROM
and then proceeded to flash the modified update to my Charmer, all i would like to know (and this is really a question to the Pro's)
would it
a) work, and be really really buggy like camera not working and stuff, or,
b) brick my device?
ANY help on this is appreciated. i would really like to get under development some sort of an AKU3.x update for the charmer. it is hideously under-developed! its a great little handset and a shame no other carriers carry the handset!
any and all help/advice would be greatly appreciated.and also, im learning! so dont be too harsh!
thank you.
AS you can see, Wizard ROMs seem to work on prophet, you can see this as the WM6 ones are derivate from Wizard's, Wizard also shares it's processor and many other stuff with prophet, but I don't know if this applies to charmer, you'll have to check mem addresses and other stuff... I'm quite sure you'll have to replace the camera driver and have to manage a way to disable the Wifi part of the rom somehow... Î just don't know how you'll manage to do that...
I don't think you'll brick your device as long as you don't install the bootloader part (IPL/SPL)

As the title to this post states, the build versions for these two devices are different. Surely a ROM upgrade will not alter the version of the O/S will it?
MDA Pro: Version 5.0 OS 5.1.1700 (Build 14352.0.1.0)
Jasjar:Version 5.0 OS 5.1.1700 (Build 14354.0.1.1)
Could this be the reason for differences in performances as well as potentially different chipsets in these devices?
Some Universals seem to overclock comfortably whilst most don't, fact!
Some Universals display certain other problems (who cares which ones right now), which others don't, fact.
Readocket Hack tops out @ 520Mhz on jasjar but 624Mhz on MDAPro
It's beginning to look like it's very plausible that HTC may have used different components (with the same spec) to build the Universals and it is a fact that we're not all running the version of operating systems.
It's therefore little wonder that we are all getting such conflicting experiences of good and bad scenarios. Correct me if I've misunderstood the facts and am assuming too much here. But if we are not running identical hardware, let alone operating systems, how can there ever be a universal ROM to cure the varying types of Unversal machines?
Can anybody please shed some light on this as my understanding of these issues is limited.
No Problems on my JasJar
to expand slightly for those who haven't already read this elsewhere...
Without taking screws out and checking chip numbers, my device and mackaby007's are identical in every way (ROM, Radio, Protocol, Build Number) The only possible difference is that I didn't load any of the extended ROM. (not sure if mackaby007 did?)
However, I have no problems and mackaby007 has...one or two:!:
As he says, is there ANY explanation for this? I understand we're both using minimal amounts of software. All I have loaded at the moment is the latest versions/betas of:
Resco Explorer and Radio, TCPMP, Pocket Weather, Pocket Breeze, and at the moment PocketHackMaster. All thoughts appreciated...
Edit: (I forgot I've got a Citrix client installed too...)

Yep done that last night (minimum ROM applications install on hard reset followed by soft-reset befor the useless stuff starts to install). Then I ran the Jasjar with just TCPMP and then with HackMaster2005 installed (only). Yet it still bums out. Any suggestions anyone?
I also concur with mackaby007 and sub69 as my JasJar is now identical to sub69s (Rom revision and no external rom loaded - pushed reset button) however I am still unable to overclock the device to 624mhz in a stable fashion.
My JasJar will clock to 624mhz and will not crash however at that speed the LCD gets the occasional flash vertical line somewhere on the screen.
I put it down to the fact that this machine was designed to run at 520 no more so other components in the board layout use a lesser tollerance than if they were aiming for 624. This could be as simple as resistors capacitors transistors. If youre lucky your lesser tollerance part will be within tollerance of a better part and so will overclock better. Its kinda like blueprinting an engine. you use all standard parts but to the tightest tollerances possible and you can get great power gains, same engine same parts but picked at random produces a production engine with guaranteeable results.

Hi,
Did a search and couldn't find exactly the question I have so here goes. I'm looking to buy a phone/PDA unit and am currently stuck between the Prophet/JAMin and the Atom.
Main uses will be standard PDA stuff, however I do a lot of 4WDing and will be installing Oziexplorer mapping software (for offroad use) and perhaps TomTom or Destinator for city/urban use.
I am leaning more towards the JAMin for its fullsize SD card slot (I have a few cards already available), however I am concerned about the speed of the unit when running mapping given its 200Mhz chip compared to the Atoms 416Mhz one.
Anyone out there able to shed some light on this and allay or confirm my concerns? Other than the chip speed and slot size, I don't really see much difference between the specs for the two that would impact me - I can live with either Bluetooth 1.2 oe 2.0 and tri-band will suit as much as quad-band, although the one thing I haven't seen on the spec sheets is that the Atom will playback music files in AAC format whereas the JAMin will. Can anyone confirm this?
Hi!
I don't know much about the Atom, but as a recent switcher from JAM to Qtek S200 I would advise you to made a carefull move.
S200 Omap processor is slow, not by Mhz itself, but a poor performer, specially doing Bluetooth-GPS navigation.
I know it depends on ROM and radio versions, but mine is definitely lagging behind any other machine I had before, HTC machines I mean.
I'd rather stick with Intel processors and even WM 2003 if you are not fully commited to something that only WM5 provides... and I see nothing really.
Too early and poorly implemented the last HTC changes......
Jamin is better in so many ways
1. Atom screen my self-identify as transflective but it is not. Prophet (Jamin) screen is HQ TFT transflective. As result the Atom is almost "blind" outdoors. This is a serious drawback, specifically for SatNav
2. Atom has a 416 MHz CPU but it's integration leaves a lot for improvement. Prophet may be relatively slow 195 MHz (nothing realy disturbing but for demanding games and/or number crunching), but so is Atom, the latter for bad engineering.. Besides, comparing TI OMAP and Intel Bulverde only by numbers is wrong to start with...
3. Prophet on latest AKU2 ROM (all Jamin/Qtek/Dopod) is stable enough, Atom on latest ROM still gives headache, freezes, etc.
4. Prophet Quality of build materials is years better than Atom's.
I had both, had to choose one, finally chosen the Prophet sold the Atom (for what it's worth..)
my opinion about prophet
First of all I must say that I do not have an atom and I did not have a chance to use it.
So far I had XDA, XDA II, XDA IIi, HP ipaq 4150, and a number of GSM phones including Motorola V600 and Nokia 6230i.
I was never happy with PPC phones. There was always a PPC feature that was missing like Wi-Fi or widdcom stack.
Then came XDA IIi. Ever since I saw it on expansys, I waited it like a lover Oh my god, what a disapointment it was. As a PPC it was perfect, simply perfect; but as a phone it was horrible. There was echo on the conversations and camera was the worst I have seen with a 1.3 MP sensor. If you look at i-mate site it is still written under the "known issues" topic that "there is a slight echo reported by users which will be solved soon" :-D
And I gave up using PPC phones. I bought an ipaq h4150 and Nokia 6230i, both which I find the best.
Then after a year, just for curiosity, I bought a prophet.
I changed the ROM to the latest Dopod. I loaded a number of applications and tried to test it. At the very beginning it was very very slow. The starting was taking 2:15 minutes after soft reset and for Resco explorer 5.20 it was taking 13 to 19 seconds to open windows folder (Where all the files wer choosen to be viewed, ie "hide ... files" choice was unchecked). I have loaded and removed a lot of applications; most likely the registry was full of weird keys.
After a week, I hard reset the device and reloaded the applications. Now I am using a number of applications like spb diary, imageer, weather, pocket plus, time, gprs monitor, omega one calculator, Adope 2.0, Agile messenger, Resco explorer and Keyboard, Megasoft2000 Pocket Clock, Lygea 12C; TCPMP and some more and relativeley light applications. It takes 1:35 minutes from soft reset to open and 4 -5 seconds to view windows folder.
I do not use any overclocking or registry tweak to run the device faster.
I find the ppc very acceptable. The phone is very stable. No hang ups or freezing. The camera is very acceptable, not same, but very close to nokia 6230i or Sony K750 camera.
If you plan to have a ppc phone and if you do not want to wait for future products, I reccomend the device.
But I must warn you about one thing: You will see a number of people that are suffering from loosing the GSM signal after they lost it once. This should be very annoying. I don' t have any of the problems that people write here and there. But for some reason there are people that have serious problems like this.
Before finishing, let me take your attention to ipaq 4150. It is, in my opinion, the best PPC that has been designed. The lightest and fastest of all PPCs that has 400 MHz processor and built in Wi-Fi and BT. It also has a very sharp screen and built in widdcom stack. It is also very cheap in ebay. It may be a solution to processor power demanding applications.
These are all I can write.
Cheers.
What about the MIO A701. It has a built in GPS receiver. 8)
You can pre-order at Expansys: http://www.expansys.com.au/product.asp?code=134278
No transflecting TFT
Had an A701 for a while. Having a transmissive TFT LCD (versus Transflective) is a serious handicap for any daylight/outdoor navigation, while this is one of device's main reasons of being.
In principle, I would suggest to avoid transmissive LCD for any use model involving outdoor activity, inclusive of Dailight driving. This technology is older than Transflective (actually was replaced by the latter) and comes back now as a measure of lowering production cost .
To those unfamilliar with the terms, the transflective LCD self reflects any front lighting (including Sun's), while at same time being backlit. This is "enjoying both worlds" and allows near optimal viewing all-arround (indoors/outdoors). Of course it is also expensive. On the opposite side there's Transmissive LCD that usually involves back lighting (exclusively) via a transparent LCD panel. Direct front light practically kills any decent chance to view the screen which becomes (in various levels) a mirror...
There were some discussions on this forum, where some claimed that a certain provider in Europe offers "dimmer" and narrower angle-of-view Prophets, different than generic iMate/Qtek. A quick search here will show screenshots which are pretty clear.
I haven't materially seen this provider's Prophet, but a look on a Mio A701 screen outdoors can easily be self explaining (BTW so is Atom and a whole new line of new devices with "retro" cheeper screens.
Go prophet! Mine loads slowly, 2:25 due to WA2 and WAD, but afterwards is quite snapy. 3 secs for opening win folder! No regrets whatsoever...
OK, my mind is now made up.
After some comments here, and a review of the JAMin against the Atom on another forum (in particular using Oziexplorer which is one thing I specifically want), I am buying the JAMin. Seems much better and faster in many respects, and cheaper, and I can use my full size SD cards.....
Now I just need to find the best deal.
Hi all,
For those who have the experiences/luxury to tried on
both Herald and Hermes, can you pls share your experience
between the two ?
I am had a hard time deciding which to get.
Hermes is selling at much lower price than Herald over here.
Herald does not seem to be picking up here.
Also O2 Zinc in also about to be avaliable in matters of weeks.
I get the general feedback that Herald is much more
responsive than Hermes despite slower speed processors -
a big factor of consideration for me.
Specifications for both devices is OK for my usage/applications.
What I need is actual user feedback in comparision of the
2 devices such as
- actual battery life performance?
- skype performance?
- device stability ... etc ?
- third party devices accessories - e.g. dual sim card add on....etc ?
Thanks in advance.
I was in the same predicament, it came down to the fact that because i have a crappy data plan i would have no use for 3G, so I went for the much smaller and better looking (IMHO) herald. Very happy with it.
does the Herad has the same freeze issues ?
This would be really important for me since 2 resets a day with my TyTN/Hermes is just too much...
I have to restart it once every 3 days or so, using the Herald very very often !
But this always depends a lot on which Software you have currently installed on your device !
I would assume this would change with XV6800(verzion version of the Herald with rev a 3G) since it has 256 of memory and aku 3.5?
Get my Herald today
Hey,
I get my Herald today. Since today I used an TYTN.
First: Herald impressed me with they good performance and better looking.
Tomorrow I start to test it with all my programm from TYTN.
The TYTN has at the end problems with freezing.
I give you update
Oliver
what is the update?
Top Herald
Hello,
after 6 days using the Herald and play a lot of programmes on my Herald i can, say: Herald ist top, no freezing, good performance and it feels good.
I use it with an alucase and this ist the very much better with the TYTN. No problems to switch on camera, Com Manager....... The buttons on Herald are well placed (better than the TYTN). The Keyboard is better than the TYTN (no uncontrolled outcoming).
+ Better Keyboard
+ No freezes
+ Good inital Quality
- Performance a little bit slower than TYTN (but its OK)
If need to buy an HTC, at the moment I would buy an Herald (But I think after Herald generation there will come an Herald with 3G and a better CPU like the Samsung with AKU 3.X, thats my next HTC "Herald")
Oliver
Thx
Thanks for the update. Funny enough I mananged to get my Hermes running without any freezes: I am quite sure it is the SD card reading that can cause some lock-ups. So I maanged to get just every frequently used app on my internal memory. And the eMails & attachements as weel. I managed to use my hermes since 96 hours without freeze now.
Well, the Heradl seems quite nice - I will probalby get it as a second device and test it thoroughly.
Regards,
Apple*
Is atom hardware is same as Hp 6828, on few sites they said it's identical, but i'm not sure what kind of identical is it.
So can we run ROM for Atom into Hp 6828 (Like HTC Universal as: XDA exec, dopod 900 etc)
Thanks in advanced
hardware is identical, but i've not sem people run the rom of one in the other. People have extracted Atom apps (phone pad/dial) and installed them in the 6828 with no problems though.
Hmmm, Thanks for reply...
I think i'll start my experiment on my girlfriend's 6828. (I'm sure she wont complain cause I bought it for her) ;-D
Hope you post the results! I want to do the oposite - Flash HP's ROM into my Atom!
...are you SURE you want O2's ROM on a HP? >_>
u can flash 6828 with atom's rom, but there will be a lot of hardware issues... and believe me, u'll regret it..
A bit OT, but I have question about 6828. Is there any possibility to connect any USB device to it? I consider USB HDD 2,5". Please help.

nope, but there are ways to connect the miniSD card on your Atom to a PC as a Flash Drive.
Yeah, you need a feature called "USB Host". PPCs that have them are RARE, and unfortunately, the Atom doesn't have it, and O2/HP isn't known for supporting this feature.
So have you tried the flashing?
Please post results. I belive that if they are hardware identical it wont be a poroblem to flash it! Like I have flashed my old MDA compact with Qtek S100's flash!
I want to try the HP rom on my Atom mainly for the new camera software(they say it's better than the Atom's one)
In my honest opinion, I dont know why you would want to flash the HP to O2. The o2 rom is heavier and the features hardly used (unless of course you subscribe to o2's services)
I seriously think you are better off with the HP rom.
it's lighter faster and more reliable.
have you upgraded to the new 1.01 rom from HP?
Try that instead.

Can we run ROM for Atom Prophet_220734_2207114_024721(AKU2.3)
into Hp 6828
Thanks

I see you're running :
==Currently Using:==
O2 Xda Atom Not-Quite-The-Executive
CMOS: 55.44
BRD: C1
ROM: 20060721B1WWE
RDO: R060822N_MN2ARC_RS00013
EXT : EX0033
Does that work well on a std Atom?
Is there any benefit compared to version 20060414B1WWE?
Have you tried installing later exec ROM's too (think there was a later radio ROM from September 2006)?
If so, did it work?
Well, after doing this, I didn't dare to flash with any later ROMs. Why?
Because the ROM is hacked to OUTRIGHT LIE. As in, an ordinary Atom only has 128MB of internal RAM, but the ROM makes it say 192MB. Yes, 192MB. Because of this, I dare not flash with later ROMs. No telling what an unhacked , pure ROM might do to an ordinary Atom. (Yes, the ROM was supposedly HACKED to work on the Atom, by using the Atom Radio Rom 0822 in place of the Atom Exec stack. I think if we tried to use an AE pure ROM, we'd get a missing radio ROM later, since it uses different radio hardware.)
I only flashed to this one because I was having trouble with 20060414B1WWE battery life and drain. Noticed very little change (an extra hour or so after conditioning, battery doesn't drain as often - eventually replaced the original, which turned out to have 2 of its cells non-functional), although some here said this made the O2's default battery last MUCH longer. Others also reported screen flicker after flashing - which disappears in a matter of hours or only happens periodically, but I noticed no such issues.
Also, note that if you flash to the hacked ROM, it's harder to go back to the original if you have problems - since the new bootloader will not allow you to flash straight from it anymore.
The camera application is more stable when attempting to save to memory, and the phone reception is slightly better - but flashing to the hacked ROM is not recommended. There is little benefit far as I can see - even if the ROM is stable and my PPC still works the same - and the risk is rather high.
You can search this forum for the old threads when that ROM first came out. They should tell you what you need to know, and are answered by people with more experience than I have.
Hey,
I've got an MF68 / IP800 (It got so many names that I prefer to call it "Horza", sounds pro - There will be a picture of it on the bottom of this post) and it came with a Windows Mobile 6.5 Professional - CE 5.2.23090 (Comp. 23090.5.3.0) - Yup, it ain't a rip-off windows. It's a rather good phone, with a slow-but-does-whatever-I-throw-at-it processor "HUAWEI HiSilicon K3", running at 360MHz (I've seen versions running at 460, if anyone knows how to overclock it, it would be welcome), 128MB RAM and 256MB ROM; all those controlled by a 240x400 3" resistive screen. Not a lamborghini but does the job well done.
Anyhoo, I want to change the ROM. Somehow it limits my volume to 63%. It might be good for my ears, but it's a real pain when I connect it to an external speaker. Also, there's a few ROM's possessing some sleek features that I'd love to use. But there's three problems:
1 - It's a dual-SIM phone (the actual ROM seems to be adapted, or something, for this - due to the poor, china-style, translation in the Dual-SIM Setup area)
2 - It's a china phone, thus I don't know what I'm supposed to do or if it's able to
3 - I only have the original USB Cable. Will it work or I need some sort of special cable?
So, what should I do? Will it be able to update? Which programs should I get?
Thanks for the attention and I'm awaiting for an answer
Sincerely,
GTMoraes
well if you say that its a legit windows mobile device then you should be able to have themes for it however, some things like hardware issues are going to get in your way.
1. Dual-SIM
2. Screen Resolution (not anytheme will work)
3. Thats all i can think of...
4. Will think of other stuff and come back to you
Yup, I can use some themes for my WM, I've got tired of the Titanium style and ATM I'm using the SPB Shell, works like a charm.
The actual O.S. works fine, but it's limiting the volume to 63% (according to 40iPlay and proved through external speakers). I've googled around and it looks like an European or something limitation, removeable only with a new ROM - so here am I.
Is there any program that I should run to see if my phone is compatible with ROM updating?
Thanks for you answer and I'm awaiting for new ones
P.S.: Anything related to the Samsung i900 works flawlessly on the Horza. So does the HTC gSensor
I have a China LEO 8585 and have yet to find a custom rom myself.. sorry bud.
