tmobile 3g dns failures - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam General

I have had a t-mobile vario 2 for the last 5 months. when I first got the phone I was excited to get the hsdpa activated and quickly phoned up tmobile and got through to a tech guy who activated it. I didnt really notice much speed improvement and tmobile only shows the 3g and not the h for hsdpa, but I was pretty happy with my speeds of around 70kbit/sec (tested through http://text.dslreports.com/myspeed?jisok=1). I downloaded fieldtest_157 which showed that I was connected to hsdpa but the values showed through hsdpa cqi status were very low.
About 1 month ago I was suddenly unable to go online whenever my phone went into 3g mode, my phone would show it connected but wouldn’t find any addresses. I was only able to when it switched to gsm. I phoned tmobile to get the problem fixed. they said it was a known issue with the phone and made me permenantly switch my phone to the gsm network. I was basically told that my phone does not support 3g and hangs on switching from gsm to 3g for no apparent reason and that they were working on the problem. they must have done something on their side because when I switched to phone back on to auto network switching, I got gsm and 3g connectivity and downloads but not hsdpa (checked with fieldtest_157)
next day because I was unhappy with the download speed I phoned tmobile and asked for hsdpa reactivation. the first level who answered made me hang on and reactivated hsdpa. same problem cant download except on gsm switch. rephoned tmobile and got through to another 2nd level tech guy and explained all my connection problems.he said that my phone had never been hsdpa connected and connected it for me. what do you know Im suddenly getting 950kbit/sec speeds and hsdpa cqi status shows all high teens or 20's. for some reason my battery is lasting allot longer and 5 months after getting the phone Im happy. moral of the story is to download fieldtest_157 from:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index...e=Hermes_Utils
and check hsdpa status because either lots of bull is being told to tmobile customers or there are some pretty stupid people working there.
I was getting lots of dns failures (except in gsm) and getting really fraustrated. I was going to ask for deactivation of hsdpa. Luckily the technician I spoke to (about the tenth person in 3 days) that eventually got me connected, new his stuff. He tried to trick me into admitting that I was using my phone as a modem for my computer and only connected me after I denied it. after he changed something on his side, he made me pull out my battery and do a soft reset. Everythings now how I expected when I bought the phone. It might sound like conspiracy theory but I got the feeling that he only connected me when it sounded like I knew slightly more than the average Joe. My hsdpa connection has been faultless ever since. Getting consistently high speeds even with 1 bar. On 3g!!
I had low fieldtest numbers before my proper activation. now all much higher teens or twentys
keep phoning tmobile until the problem is fixed!! and speak to someone who doesnt have to read a set of respone instructions and has some real knowledge. the minimum wage first support layer made me try all the usual, change settings, swap sim, disable 3g etc.... dont go there!!
Hope this helps

Have you thought about changing your DNS Servers on your vario to global ones?

yes nothing changed

3g Tmobile UK Connection Issues

I(m currently switching between GSM and 3g - however i gprs seems to work fine for browsing however 3g does not seem to be working for browsing but ok for calls!! Im in the birmingham area where 3g coverage is normally superb - is anyone experiencing similar problems or know a possible way to resolve? I soft reset doesnt resolve the issue!
I am in T-Mobile UK and have no problems so sorry cannot offer advice - is surfing with GPRS OK? I have found T-Mobile customer support very good - give them a try. Their tech support people seem to know what they are talking about which is nice too - much different to O2. Good luck
PS - if not tried then take a look at the excellent plug-in by Daniel Herrero here. I doubt it will fix this problem but it saves lots of battery power and is very configurable.
I have exactly the same problem. 3g is really slow for surfing and GPRS is so much faster. In fact a lot of the the time on 3g I just get error messages saying the page is not available etc but if I then switch to GSM it loads in a second.
I have found something weird though: If I switch the phone off or go in to comm manager and switch the line connection off then try to surf or download on 3g it will not work.
If however, I switch the phone or the connection on then switch to gsm, and then to UMTS/3g it will surf on 3g.
For this I use Daniel Herrero's excellent program to fast switch.
but even this method sometimes doesn't work.
What I've resorted to is surfing on GPRS and when I need to download something, quickly switch (using Dan's Program) to 3g.
Am I right in thinking the no 3g connection after being switched on is a known issue with the Hermes?
HI JPHCCFC
Im in Birmingham on t-mobile and for the past two ...three days i to have had trouble connecting to the web or msn...very slow or no connection
Gavin
cheers for the info guys - im thinking that maybe its a 3g network error in the area - anybody who isnt experiencing problems in the birmingham area with 3g Data?
still no data 3g in the birmingham area....or is it my handset??? Gav1n how is your data 3g performing?
Im in manchester and i seem to have the same problem with 3g being much slower for browsing than the standard gprs
I'm getting the same issues in East surrey
phoned customer services they said they had no reported errors with the 3g network! they said try the sim swap with another tmobile sim to see if its the handset or network!
hi im still the same no 3G ....in brum (quinton) when i change the band to gsm every is thing is ok....its the same on my wifes phone ...so deff a t-moible thing...

3G connection issues on TMobile-Vario2
Dear all,
Appears the south-east also has the same type of connection issues. Everything appeared well until about 7-10 days back.
I e-mailed T-Mobile support and they advised that there were some network issues which could have impacted the service. I did notice that their on-line account services had also been upgraded around the same time period - maybe a coincidence - but every since then the phone doesn't seem to surf properly on the 3G service. AND, battery life goes down dramatically - I only now manage to get about a day's use out of the damn phone!
I've got a replacement battery from T-Mobile - but same thing happens. I think it's all inter-related!
So what's the solution anyone? 'cos I am getting rather hacked off with it all!
I'm getting hacked off with really bad now.
My grps is faster than 3g. Period. Regardless of reception. Anyone got a solution???
try disabling hsdpa with hermes tweaker and reboot your phone.make sure you are not connected to gprs while disabling it. it has solved my problems.
3G connection issues on TMobile-Vario2
Same here in the Canary Wharf area for the last 7-10 days. First I blamed my radio rom - I have upgraded to 1.34.00.10 when the problem started. But then I have also tried 1.27 and few older ones - all the same problem. Fast grps, but no 3G. The battery also dies quite fast on 3g, so I have now switched to GSM only. :-(
Don't know if any of you have done this already but I was having the 3G problems for a couple of weeks and battery was draining quickly, I phoned up T-Mobile and asked them if HSPDA was turned on on my account which it wasn't, since they turned it on the problems have disappeared and my connection speed is now at least 750 kbs.
3G issues
i have had my t-mobile for over a week now, but in the shop they said there was no 3G in edgbaston, birmingham but when i got it home i connected quite easily

No 3G in Glasgow. Was fine until 7-10 days ago. Phoned T-Mobile and the guy said they knew of problems. Asked for HSDPA to be activated, he claimed to have done this but no difference. Another post implies that they might not actually enable HSDPA first time of asking.
I bought the phone for 3G. It clearly has nothing to do with the handset since it worked fine for 3 months. Can I make a claim against T-Mobile?
i activated HSDPA and this resolved the issue for me!

T-mobile hsdpa activation proof!!

after the activation I started getting the dreaded freeze that only a soft reset could fix and missed loads of calls. about 1 month ago I was suddenly unable to go online whenever my phone went into 3g mode, I was only able to when it switched to gsm. I phoned tmobile to get the freeze problem fixed. they said it was a known issue with the phone and made me permenantly switch my phone to the gsm network. While this may be good for you I'm not sure if it is the solution for everyone.
When I first got my Vario II in August I was getting 300Kbps downloads. 5 minutes after phoning them it was 1.3Mbps, even though the girl said she didn't know what the problem could be (she did speak to someone in technical though).
For the last two or so weeks HSDPA has been very intermittent. Most dns requests fail. And if I am lucky enough to get a stable connection, speedtests show around 150Kbps
Fieldtest shows
CQI...1 3
........2 1
.....3-8 0
........9 4
......10 1
After reading another post here, suggesting that a solution may be to disable HSDPA, I get almost perfect Internet access, allbeit with lower data speeds of on average 280Kbps.
Surely if HSDPA was not enabled on my SIM, then it would be how it originally was and I would just connect with UMTS at around 300Kbps, not connect with HSDPA and not be able to do anything.
But I'll phone them, again, and ask for a HSPDA reactivation anyway.
Actually, thinking about my scepticism.
I was recently in Singapore using a prepaid SIM which does not have 3G access. The phone kept connecting to the 3G signal and then reported 'no service'. Obviously after selecting GSM only everything was fine.
So perhaps there is a similar kind of problem here. Whether the fault is with the phone or network(s) I don't know. I did try radio 1.06, which I believe was the original shipped version but that was the same.
i'm so glad i read this!! just called up t-mobile, they activated my HSDPA (thought it was just on by default)!.
tests so far showing 1.3 mbit download speed, i'll try in my home area too later tonight.
I'm seeing the "H" icon, not the "3" icon. using the latest HTC ROM that came out in january, not the default t-mobile one.

My hsdpa IS active. I get approx 90kbit/sec downloads on T-Mobile and I see a '3G' icon not a 'H'

I had similar fieldtest numbers before my proper activation. now all much higher.
just ran a few more tests on this...
i manually set the phone to 3G instead of HSDPA (tool is somewhere in this forum). speed was about 280kbit.
HSDPA on and i get between 700 and 1200kbit. not as fast as the original 1300 i benchmarked earlier, but still great

X1i when using 3G on AT&T I cant make or receive calls???

So when I leave all the band settings to auto on the phone, it immediately connects to AT&T's 3G network and shows the "H" in the title bar it worked for a little while then calls stopped coming through, after a hard reset it works again with calls for a few hours, then it begins to fail.
If I switch the bands to GSM and manually select the frequencies (850 + 1900, according to wm) then it connects to the EDGE network, and I can make and receive calls as I please, no problems, except for the crappy network speed.
So someone help me out here please, is the phone defective, or is it not working as it should because of the lack of the 850 band? I know that AT&T works on either or but this problem has me stumped.
Other than this rather huge problem (phone that cant make calls), I absolutely love the Xperia and would hate to return and wait for another.
did you try to use the connection wizard to let the phone config itself?
after I put my iphone sim in it shows the H/3G icon on anf off all the time, while I can receive call I was unable to go online.... after someone suggested me to call att to update the imei on my account to the x1, I found that I still have to go to connection and change the setting myself b4 it can go online. you will have to remove the user name and pw in media net setting and uncheck the proxy server.
I guess my case is a little different than yours but I guess you can give it a try... good luck =)
Thanks, I actually haven't tried that since i figured it would be the same as what happens when you turn the phone on for the first time, when it autoconfigs.
if it say it detect a new sim and ask if you want to do the auto config then I guess its the same... but again I did need to change some settings inside the network config to make it work too... so I am guessing the "auto config" has some flaw in it
No problem with my X1i when I venture in a1900mhz area close to my home. I live in a small town in Ca. only 850mhz here. But in the larger Metro area around me... No Problems with calls or hspeed data access...
Stuart
Thanks for the replies, It looks like the Configuration wizard in the settings menu did the trick. It do something else that the autoconfig doesnt. The phone seems to work now just fine, although it doesnt hang on to the signal as well as my old k790a. The office I work in is an ATT dead zone and I could make calls using the K790a with only one bar, with the Xperia it either doesnt go through or drops the call.
Again this is better as it works now, just not as well as my old phone.
Also, scl_electronics, so you are saying the X1i has both 850 and 1900mhz bands? I had a feeling mine did too, but I thought it was put to rest that that wasnt the case with the X1i....
Sorry Aaron J,
i should have been more specific!! Where I live, 3G is only on 850mhz band so I don't get access..Just The edge network. When I venture about 10 mile away toward the major Metro areas..The 1900mhz band are used. So the H is displayed, but I don't have those access problems for calls or data!!
But i am waiting to see if they can crack the rom for 850mhz-3G access!!

Oh ok thats kind of makes, sense although I thought the X1i didnt have an 850 band at all, so what frequency does it work off then?
Anyways, back to my problem....I spoke too soon, it dont work on 3G switched to EDGE. I might just try getting a new sim card, mine is a Cingular one from 2005, that has been in at least 4 different phones now including the X1i.

Well out here in Ca... 850mhz gsm/edge is used ..So I quad band gsm phone is handy!!!
Stuart
Yes it is! My little problem is a little confusing though as one thing I just realized that I didnt say before is that the phone has no problem connecting to the 3G network using HSDPA. I get full bars with the H icon pretty much everywhere in my area and my data speeds are very good. So I can surf the net, download programs, watch high quality youtube videos using the app in touchflo and even send and receive texts just fine.....just no calls when on 3G. I'm hoping its just setting somewhere and not a faulty device.
I live in Raleigh NC by the way so maybe it could be a faulty tower?
Well when venture into Stockton Ca. my phone switches to 3G-HSDPA:1900MHZ Without a connection hitch....
Have you tried a soft reset......
But when all else fails Hard Reset to the Rescue!!!
Btw... in several of my ppc-wm units when restoring to OEM setting(hard reset) there has been many time the process had a problem. So something would be screwed up!! So when You don't succeed, try another hard reset!!
Good luck,
Stuart
hey i was wonder if your problem is HSDPA/HSUPA being on, i have at&t also and it worked for the first few weeks fine with it being on then all of a sudden it stopped and couldn't connect to the internet, before i had the H/Edge showing up and also my email never updated when it was set to do it every 15minutes. Now that i disable the HSDPA/HSUPA i see 3G/Edge and email update all the time on the X1i. Just wonder if that might fix it, I'm all kinda still new to all this but i had my X1i for 2 1/2 weeks now.
Hello thanks for all the suggestions, Experiaenjoy, no I haven't tried mainly because I can connect to the data network just fine and get awesome speeds with full bars pretty much everywhere, all of my data related activities and programs work just fine (aka murder my battery life ). I just cant make calls while on 3G.
I talked to a coworker today who used to be a regional manager at AT&T hee said that he saw many cases of people who were having problems where it was due to the SIM card. He said they all had the older orange Cingular card and that an update to the new blue AT&T card solved all problems. So right now I'm trying to see if I can get mine updated (I do have an older Cingular SIM). Once I get that, I will do a hard reset (3rd one also done about 20 soft resets since I 've had it-I've installed a bunch of programs and tweaks) and skip the auto config and go straight to the connection wizard.

3G drops to GSM when receiving calls and during calls

I searched all the threads and found nothing on this as far as I can see. I have been having this since day one with my G1. Every time I receive a call on my G1 or during the call it drops from 3G to GSM. I had stock T-Mo roms on my G1 (Pre/Post Cupcake) then JF 1.51 and now cyanogen 4.0.2 and this problem persists. I called T-Mo a few times on this and they exchanged my G1 3 times and gave me a new battery and charger free of charge. Does anyone else have this issue or know of a work around? This happens when I am at home and work. I travel for work to different locations and it still happens. When my phone rings it automatically drops 3G and goes to GSM (no icon next to the radio icon in the status bar). While making calls it stays on 3G for about a few seconds before it craps out and drops to GSM. It totally skips EDGE and GPRS. T-Mo said they sent out radio antenna tech's to the antennas near my home and they said all is fine and dandy. I live In Queens NY and work in the Bronx. When I travel to Brooklyn its the same as well as driving though Manhattan. I hope someone can help me with this.

ive always had this as well .. just never considered it a bug lol ... but i could see why someone would wanna keep their 3g while on a call .. reminds me of how sidekicks would lose data connectivity due to a call

Could you elaborate?
If you've had 3 G1's and a tech says there's nothing wrong with the network then it's clearly an issues with cupcake, be it a feature or a bug...
I don't really see why you would want to keep data conectivity while in a call, (unless you're downloading something in the background..?) so it sounds like a way to save battery..

Here's a perfect example where 3G would rule when working properly.
I'm talking to my wife on my BT headset while driving home from work. I have my G1 on my dash with google maps running with traffic patterns showing. While talking I am able to talk clearly on 3G and still see where traffic is building so I can avoid it. Being stuck in rush hour in NYC sux homeless man [email protected] Whenever I do this and my 3G connection drops my call quality drops and we both hear it while we're talking and then it cuts in and out and the call drops then I dont get updates. It's a feature I would really like to have. Even when Im working and talking and downloading a new update of an app. This happens when I am at a static location as well. I know driving from cell tower to cell tower can have bad effects but it does the same when I'm just at home or any of my work locations. When 3G works properly which is rare its amazing. Its helped me get un lost and find my way many of times.
Point being when T-Mo released the 3G statement they said all users with 3G phones will expierence higher call quality from the extra bandwidth. Why would they cap or or disable it when they are promoting it? I see the the point of saving battery life but it still shouldnt be happening. 3G is made for that feature to work voice + data being accessed together.
It might just be there 3g network, imo tmobile reception is horrible. Like at my house it is so f'ed up, I can sit in my chair and have 3 bars then walk 2 feet and lose service. It does this all through my house and at my work. They said it must be something in the buildings I am in, bull**** I say because ATT never does that nor did vzw when I used them.
same thing happens with me and 3g and calls..also about the house thing, hows this one for u ill be sitting in the same spot and have good 3g reception and all of a sudden it drops to edge. I know a way around this is to set phone to 3G only but then in areas where theres non im screwed
I don't get it. My wife who had the original iPhone and then 3g and now 3gs never had this issue. She would stay on Edge and 3g depending if she waned to save batery life. My old BB 8700g would always stay on Edge never drop to GSM in my apartment. My 3G doesnt even fall to Edge it goes right to GSM. This is really annoying.
every t-mobile phone I have does this
I'm pretty sure its normal
No one knows if this is a hardware, software, or network problem. Except maybe HTC/T-Mobile/Google.
If your phone stays connected to 3G, it's all good. If it drops down to EDGE, even if for half a second, it will NOT reconnect to 3G until you hang up.

My coworkers Samsung t819 doesn't. That's regular cell phone not a smart phone.

If any of those 3 know they should fix it or at the very least advertise that the calls you make are dropped to the lower bandwidth of the GSM network.
T-Mo finally got 3G for the last year don't dumb it down guys. Fix this.
Yes it is true once your phone drops beneath 3G it will not go to 3G until you hang up the call.
try running 3g only or wdma only by creating phone info shortcut on anycut .. im going to try that out and see if it ever drops .. should be a temporary fix for you atleast with the whole maps thing and such but if you ever in an edge only are your screwed

I changed it to wcdma only in phone info. Hopefully this works. Everywhere I travel to throughout NYC has 3G. Hopefully this works. Also I have noticed that when downloading anything from 3G be it the market or browser it would drop from 3G to Edge as well.

*UPDATE*
While at home downloading apps from Android Market on 3G with wcdma only selected the radio dropped with no netowkr connection. Bust.

Did she use att or tmobile with the iphone? Because att has a much stronger 3g network then tmobile which could be why. I am pretty sure it is something to do with tmobiles network and not your phone, perhaps your area has to many users for it to stay on 3G. I have read about how the cell towers work and they have only so many bands for each user to access at any given time so if tmobile doesn't have enough towers or those things mounted on the towers it may be set up so you only get 3G for data usage and not calls since they don't technically require it to work.

My wife is on ATT. Isn't lower frequency better at penetrating through walls and such? (T-Mo 1700 MHz and 2100 MHz compared to ATT 1800 MHz) They haven't booted their 850 MHz antennas yet so I hear.
If that is true then why not boot me down to Edge or gprs why all the way down to gsm? I been living in the same area for 26 years. I have been with T-Mo before they even had antennas in my area and walking outside was the only way to get a signal with my phone. Now I get full reception in and out of my apartment and 3G connectivity in my apartment with a signal strength of -93dBm through out my apartment on 3G and -79 dBm on Edge.
T-Mo stated that this should not be happening. Hence the 3 phones new battery and charger and techs to the antennas. I'm starting to think its a HTC Android problem and not a T-Mo problem. Hopefully a new radio update can fix it.
I didn't even know GSM was still used in that way, I thought GPRS would be the bare minimum. How can you tell the difference? I use to only get a G icon and I looked it up and for the g1 it said that meant GPRS, what does it show for GSM? Not like any of this matters though.
I really have no idea why all this is happening to your G1 but I hope it gets resolved, good luck.
edit: on the tmobile coverage map it says edge/gprs and 3g, no gsm. does that make any difference? I checked for NYC overall not any specific boroughs.

GSM is what Edge Gprs and 3G run off of. Think of it as a progression. GSM>GPRS>EDGE>3G.
The way I know it is on GSM is to the left of the Radio icon on the home screen there is another icon that shows the network your on. 3G=3G E=EDGE G=GPRS and no icon means GSM. GSM is still being used. Most SMS and MMS messages get sent to your from through GSM while you are on a call.

Omnia7 + T-Mobile UK domestic data roaming = Tragedy???

For those on T-Mobile UK Network, could you share your thoughts about the data roaming between T-Mobile - Orange 3G network?
Does it work for you, does it boosts speeds?
In my case it defaults to T-Mobile Orange, although this is a correct selection signal-wise, as I've got 3-4 bars of 3G+ (2-3 bars with 'vanilla' T-Mobile), I guess Orange speeds are **** in my area, resulting to 700/40 Kbps down/up best case scenario (40 Kbps, that's kilobit per second, or 5 KB/sec). Worst case scenario is ping time-outs, because the upload speed is so slow that even the initial command is difficult to be transmitted. Sites with pictures is almost a no go, the same applies to traffic intensive apps, e.g. maps.
When I force T-Mobile via Settings (manual Network selection, data roaming set to off) speeds go up, to acceptable 1700/300 Kbps. But after a couple of minutes, the network changes to T-Mobile Orange.
I called cc to deactivate data roaming (international), just in case it deactivates domestic one, but to no avail. No one in T-Mobile knows if I can opt-out of domestic data roaming and give me foolish instructions ''remove your battery, remove SIM card, reboot phone blah blah blah****''
Any experiences? Does 3G roaming work for you?
Hi, its kinda hard for me to tell as I normally have quite bad signal and its really annoying. I had issues with WiFi and 3G conflicting and I thought it was the 3G but since I updated to mi7ROM I havent had this problem - so not sure pal
I'm on Orange UK and opted into this ages ago. As far as I can tell it's a load of rubbish and doesn't work properly.
In my flat I get low GPRS with Orange. If i force it to T-Mobile I get full 3G. However the roaming defaults to Orange and so I'm stuck with GPRS and poor reception.
In addition the Omnia can't seem to handle switching between networks properly resulting in data connection problems where it will lose it altogether.
I have noticed that the T-Mobile 3G speed seems higher than the Orange 3G speed too.
i can only echo Freypal, thats the exact same as my situation. great idea, but it doesnt seem to have been implemented properly.

As a t-mob customer i too find that the auto switch to orange results in my data falling over, requiring me to go into flight mode so that it will auto reselect the t-mob network.
I did ask to be opted out but the t-mob CS recommended that I be patient. They are aware that there are problems but hope to have them sorted soon(ish)
I'm having exactly the same experience as the original poster. I took the phone into the shop and a staffmember agreed that the Orange-TMobile 3G is not working yet and they are getting a lot of complaints. I spoke to customer services but they say you cannot opt out and they are working to resolve the problems...but they would not give a timeframe when pushed ("days, weeks or months?").
I think its worth starting an Ofcom complaint.

T-Mobile has implemented signal sharing with Orange. In theory this should enhance coverage--particularly 3G coverage--for T-Mobile customers.
The reality is that this signal sharing is not working properly. T-Mobile customers' phones are constantly getting stuck on Orange transmitters even when there is good T-Mobile reception available. This can mean customers have barely 1 bar of low-speed 2G ("G") Orange signal even when there is strong T-Mobile 3G signal available in the area.
T-Mobile say they have activated "smart signal sharing" which should prevent the above from occurring. However, this has failed to fix the problem.
T-Mobile say customers can't opt out of the new scheme. It needs to take notice that for many of its customers the signal sharing scheme is counter-productive and *reduces* the quality of the service they are getting.
Please sign this petition so that T-Mobile/OFCOM realize the extent of this problem.
