I've stumbled accross an application that lets you turn off the toggle the GPRS connection on and off!
This is a great app as it avoides those huge data bills!
Works great on my XDA Orbit with WM5
Download Here
for htc wizard, you can hold the "end call" button for 3 secs to end GPRS.
Yes that turns the GPRS off for that session but the it can auto conect again if it wants too. This app stope it from automatically connecting when your not looking.

Ever since i upgraded to ROM 4.00.10 i can't disconnect my gprs connection. It connects fine, I can even make an outgoing call during a grprs connection.
But I can't disconnect!!!
I have to turn my phone on and off...
Does anybody know where i can switch off a active gprs connection?
The reason I want to do this is because incoming calls get redirected to my voicemail while gprs is active.
Thx in advance
Odd. GPRS should suspend when a voice call comes in. If you are transmitting data it may redirect to voicemail.
The only way to disconnect the internet is to turn the phone off, or use SPB GPRS Monitor or something similar to manually connect/disconnect.
Which wireless carrier do you subscribe to?
Actually, SpB GPRS Monitor's "Disconnect" feature doesn't seem to do the trick (for me, anyway).
However, you can just push and hold (for a few seconds) the "End" red button on your XDA. Presto - no more GPRS connection.

thats the same as to off the phone...
I'd read a couple posts earlier about holding down the red button. I just tried it. Using the T-Mobile 4.00.10 and (is it 6.24? The radio stack that comes with that ROM) if GPRS is connected (you have the siglan bars and the horizontal arrows) and you hold down the red button for a couple seconds, it will drop the gprs and go back to the regular voice style signal meter.

Not on the 4.00.10 ROM/6.24 RS. With this ROM and radio stack, holding the End/red button ends the GPRS connection, without turning off the phone. You can turn off the phone by tapping the connection icon in the title bar, and tapping "Turn Phone Off". Not sure how this behaved in previous ROM/radio stack versions.

Another dumb question I'm sure but heh thats what this place is for, so those who know can tell those of us who dont!
How do I turn of the GPRS element of the wireless radio but still leave the phone on. On my XDA 1 I'd dial up via gprs for emai/web then when I'd finished I'd disconnect, leaving the GSMN phone on in the background. with the II when I dial up via gprs the only way to disconnect is to turn the whole 'wireless radio' off then turn the phone back on...not ideal.
Or am I missing the point!
it's the same on XDA I with WM2003 ... you can press the red button for 3 seconds and the GPRS will be down leaving the phone running ... or you can use this nice s/w http://www.gb-soft.cz/XDAII/default.htm
Good luck ...
Turning off GPRS
To turn off GPRS Point and Hold your stylus on the O2 icon until your connection settings pop out and untick the connection.
Hope this Help.
I have an XDA 1
Running 4.01.12 ENG - Radio 4.21.00
Connected to the Orange Network
When I connect to GPRS to access the internet or email.
It connects up fine. If I then tap on the signal Icon
(with opposing arrows indicating its connected),
It opens a ballon window with "Orange GPRS Connected". The only options are HIDE and a settings link. The is no disconnect option.
The only way I can stop the connection is to tap Setting -> Manage Existing ->Edit and then CANCEL
Anyone know how to fix this.?
Help appreicated.

Well, here is a little cool trick to disconnect the GPRS!!
Just press the "end call button" (the red button) for 3 seconds, then it will disconnect.
Try it, it works with me in xda II, I am not sure if it works in xda I. Let us know if this little trick works in xda I.
 It works. Thanks
Some questions about the "ALWAYS ON" GPRS connection in WM2003 (device = imate aka XDA II)
1. Does it consume extra battery life if the GPRS is alawys on?
2. When I'm connected but not actively doing anything (upload/download), does the device keep communicating with the service provider? i.e. sending control information back and forth even when i am actively not using it?
3. If the GPRS connection is active, are there any chances my phone reception or the phone's ability to get a phone call/SMS/MMS is adversely affected? I dont want people not to be able to contact me or send sms/mms because my phone is always connected on GPRS.
4. Once the GPRS connection is made, and i'm done doing my "thing", how do I disconnect? Cause currently I have no way of disconnecting.
1 yes like your phone use more power when you speak in your phone it use lot more power then not using it
2 a bit not too much
3 it should not
4 www.GB-SOFT.cz/xdaII should add some features

Mind you, I use an MDA I.
as far as I know, the only way to get off and stay off GPRS is to go to settings->system->memmory->running programs and close anything that might use it (mailbox, IE, etc...)
If the signal indicator says it's connected to GPRS, then yes, you are actively connected to the tower/cell network. Sending info constantly, I don't know?????
GPRS effecting other network connectiveity???? I've heard yay and nay and have no professional opinion. Personally, I have no problems recieving a call, sms, etc... while connected to GPRS.
As far as power consumption, I would assume yes, it sucks up power. I have noticed about a 15% increase in power consumption using the web for an hour or so per day as well as automaticly checking email once every 45 minutes.
I also recently discovered a beautiful little prog that I cooked into my MDA I OS. PocketNav. It allows you to switch programs, close certain ones with only two "clicks", or all the progs at once, etc.... Check it out!!! It will be worth your time (I don't know where to get it other than stephan's kitchen).
Good luck!
gsm and sms should disable grps while it's using the band
but not cause problems
there is also the program PHM task manager
which is pretty much a copy of the task manager in windows 2k and xp so if people know and like that then it's a good program

He Dustoff,
Great stuff! Worked fine for me. Thanks.

Dustoff,
Where is the Red dsiconnect button I am supposed to press and hold?
I am using WM2003 and after Iam connected, i havent been able to find any place where there is any disconnect option. in the connection bubble all i can see is that i am "connected" but there is nowhere for me to disconnect.
Can you please let me know where you find this disconnect option.
thanks
Red disconnect button
It is simply the red button of the telephone.
On another hand, if someone calls you exactly in the same moment when yours GPRS is fully active downloading something (a big picture, a long message, ...), you may appear as "unavailable"

Hi.
I have not tried the above software yet, but here is the problem I have...
I use Wi-Fi a lot at home and quite often keep the Wi-Fi on and use WiFiFoFum away from home. I have managed to set up my pay as you go GPRS connection. But whenever I'm away from a Wi-Fi network the GPRS connects and my applications then access the internet.
There needs to be an option of "not connecting gprs automatically when there is no Wi-Fi connection."
What I have had to do is change one of the setting for the gprs so it cant connect, and I have to change it back when I need it.
Switching from Wi-Fi to gprs can cost a lot if things connect without me knowing. It costs £3 for a months use of 1Mb.
Regards,
Ian Watson
creating a phantom connection, and "picking" it as default may be slightly quicker than changing the settings of you primary connection.
I think holding down the HANGUP/STOP button for 2-3 seconds is the fastest and easiest way.

I have found where I can stop it from connecting the GPRS if it cant get a wi-fi conncetion. Connections icon on the connections tab, then the advanced tab, then the select networks button - "programs that automaticall connect to the internet..........". I have changed this from gprs to my isp.

Hi,
I have just upgraded to a Magician (02 XDA Mini ROM) from a Wallaby (02 XDA1) which was running an AT&T WM 2003 rom.
My question is - where has the little "disconnect GPRS" option gone from the balloon window that appears when you tap on the Net work conection icon in the start bar?
To turn on GPRS - you tap the "G" icon in the start bar - then a "connect GPRS" option appears in a balloon. On my old XDA to turn off GPRS it was the reverse. On the Magician - there is no "disconnect gprs" link, just the words "connected" in the balloon where the disconnect link should be.
Anyone have any ideas of how to effectively turn it off?
At the moment I am just turning flight mode on and off, which works but is a little tedious.
Regards,
J
Disconnect GPRS
Press and hold 'End' (the RED phone button) for about 3 to 5 seconds and the GPRS session will disconnect.
This used to work for the xda2 as well, though it wasnt mentioned in the user manual for the xda2. I havent read the users manual for the JAM, but I've seen this mentioned in the FAQ on clubimate.
Cheers

Hi, simply press and hold the End key (red one) for 3 seconds.

funny becuase my GPRS connections always close themselves on my Compact. I was actually wondering how to keep them open rather than auto close?
Hi!
@digger: use the following little Utility which was originally developed for Windows Smartphones - but also runs good on Pocket PC Phones.
Download it, unzip it, move the .exe to your MDAc/JAM, execute it, apply your changes and quit it - et voila...
