Spectrum Wifi card - is it worth it? - JAM, MDA Compact, S100 General

I've been thinking of getting a 802.11b wifi SDIO for the Magician. The reason I want one is so that I can check email / quickly surf webpages using free AP's while I'm on the road, instead of paying for expensive wireless data via GPRS. There isn't a real need to connect the Magician to my wireless LAN when I'm at home.
So I'm just wondering how easy it is to find unsecured, free AP's ... I live in Toronto, Ontario but I'd suppose most N-American cities are similar?
The Spectrum wifi SDIO card is ~ US$50 from ebay, and if free unsecured AP's are tough to find then it'll really be $50 wasted for me.

you can find "spectec" wireless wifi card for $35 and it is small (i doesn't have memory card integrated).it looks like this:

i dont know can i write link of the e-store,i'm new one here..

Can you PM me with the link in that case?

I was using one of these cards in my MDA compact before I got my Trion. Very unstable, poor driver & diagnostics -I wouldn't buy it again.

XDA II with Sandisk SD Wifi transfer rate

Sandisk SD wi-fi card is quite easy to be installed on my xda II. However, I can only connect to my buffalo G54 access point (802.11b/g) with only 1Mb/s (shown in the wi-fi network status) even 1 feet away from the access point
Supposingly, it can have 11Mb/s????
Do I need to set my XDA II or my access point
I have the XDA II and sandisk WiFi, it connects at 11, but the SDIO throughput is not even 256kbs so why bother about it connecting at 1Mb??
It's very slow on mine too.
Wifi from SanDisk ?
Lucky guy . Whe did you buy SD Wifi card ? I cannot buy it in my country .

Sandisk SD WiFi Card
www.eCost.com has them for US$95. Most electronic web sites will have this, i.e. MobilePlanet.com.
Sandisk is due to release a new SD WiFi+128M card in 1Q04. WiFi and a bit a memory in the SDIO slot.
Having a mare getting the SanDisk to work... Please help
Hi,
It looks like a few of you have managed to get the SanDisk to work in your XDA2...
I'm trying to get mine to work in the following configuration:
Peer to Peer Wireless Lan
Laptop running Win2k Server
Wireless PC Card - Belkin 54g
Fixed IP Address on both Laptop and XDA
I can see the network name on the SanDisk Configuration, so it has found the laptops network, but I can't ping from the SanDisk utility nor generate any activity. The ping returns not found... 100% packet loss.
It isn't trying to go out over GPRS, so I'm happy with the network setup, I think.. :?
Any help or guidance would be appreciated...
Thanks
Richard

Has anyone heard about a problem the SanDisk SD WiFi card has, on XDA2, connecting to a combo 802.11b/g router? Don't know if it's on the router end or SanDisk end? Apparently, if it's only a 802.11b router, there's not a problem.
I'm ready to get a home wireless router in the next couple of weeks and am trying to decide whether a 802.11b/g combo or just a 802.11b
Thanks
SanDisk WiFi performance
plandregan,
where did you get figures on the sandisk wi-fi performance? did you measure it somehow? if yes - please kindly point me to the tool (I wish I had `ttcp' for PPC2003, but did not find any). I was trying to use xda-ii as wireless mp3 player and failed - all mp3s do 'click' as if there was not enough bandwidth.

Wireless network - getting started

Hi folks, I'm new to the XDA 2. I was wondering if there is some way to get it to connect to my wireless network at home? I've started reading up on the subject but it's not making much sense yet. What do I need to get started, and how do I configure the XDA?
Thanks for your help in advance.
networking
This may be too simplistic but if you just need to transfer files or download email from time to time, once you connect via the cradle and activesync to any of the PCs on the network, then you'll be on the network anyway. No need to make any other connections.
Thanks, but basically I want to be able to use my broadband connection on my XDA (sounds lazy I know, but it'll save dragging out my old laptop when my wife is using the desktop). Seems I need a wireless card for the XDA. Which is a bit of a shortcoming, when it can work as a wireless modem for my laptop (not that I would at dial-up rates)
You could use a bluetooth dongle on your pc and the bluetooth on your xda2 to do this. If you wish to use wifi you will need either an sd wifi card or to buy the backpack and a cf wireless card. the xda2 as it stands has no wifi capability and I understand there are some major problems getting the additional hardware to work satisfactorily so choose something that the supplier guarantees to work with your configuration.
You can also get a Bluetooth Access Point with Ethernet input (incase you already have a router or something).
Thanks guys, sorry I took so long to reply, been away....
I'll give the bluetooth thing a try, don't fancy a dodgy wifi card, which is a pity cos Sandisk now do one with 256mb memory on board so that you can have your wifi access, and still have some useful extra memory too.

What's the cheapest WiFi SDIO card + Access Point in the UK?

I'm completely new to WiFi. I currently use Bluetooth to access the internet around the house on my XDA2, but I'm getting a bit anoyed by the lack of range/functionality.
I read on these forums that some of you have purchased a SDIO WiFi card for £20, yet the cheapest I can find is twice that. Where can I buy the cheapest / best value for money SDIO WiFi card? Also, what's the cheapest / best value for money WiFi Access Point?
Oh and will the SDIO WiFi Card work 100% well with Windows Mobile 2005?
Please can I have any advice/comments on the following setup for an XDA2 running Windows Mobile 5/2005:
- Spectec SD Wifi Card (due to it's small size and it's low power performance) @ £45 new from eBay
- Linksys 54G Router (I know the SD WiFi card is only capable of Wifi-B, but thinking of the future) @ £50 new from eBuyer.com

Internet Sharing question....

here is my issue....
I used to work at an office where 3G was always available with 5 bars. I would plug my 8525 into my laptop and surf away. It was great!
Now, I have a new assigment and even though outside in the parking lot, I get 5 bars of 3G, when I enter the building, the 8525 drops down to EDGE. So now, when I plug into the laptop, surfing sucks.
So here is the question...
I am thinking about buying a Sierra Wireless Aircard 875u from AT&T. My hopes are that an external PC card may provide a stonger attenna so that I can get 3G in this building. Does anyone know if this card is good. Also, i have laptop connect plan on my 8525 sim. Should i just be able to swap my sim into the Sierra Wireless Aircard 875u and get access?
When I had your same tethering questions, I found this page to be quite helpful, http://www.gadgetech.info/wireless/cingular/data/
I answered my own question so I will share the answer with everyone
Since my 8525 is using the PDA connect with BlackBerry plan UNlimited with Tethereing ($74.99 a month), swapping the sim into any device is possible.
I bought the Sierra 875u, it is a little USB laptop connect card. When i place it in the same place as I normally would place my 8525 to connect to the internet, i now get 3G connections. Only 2 bars, but WAY BETTER than the Edge only connections that my 8525 would give me. So i solved my problem with a $100 AirCard. Swapping the sims is sorta lame, but it works.

Help with setting up a Android Phone as hotspot for home internet with Three UK

Hi,
My sister lives in the countryside where broadband ADSL speeds are lucky to reach 0.5Mb.
However whilst i was visiting I tested my Nexus 5 data speeds and got around 7Mb download using my 3G connection through my Three SIM (on The One Plan).
I was thinking they could purchase a SIM only contract for the One Plan (that includes tethering and unlimited data) and use that in a MIFI dongle. However doing a bit of searching it seems that Three will not allow the SIM to be used in a MIFI unit.
So that got me thinking.
I am now considering getting them a cheap Android handset with a One Plan sim installed, and use that phone as their source for internet connection at home.
Anyone else tried this?
How would you set it up for the best?
PHONE > COMPUTER / DEVICES (I would of thought that the phone wouldnt send out the best wifi signal around the house)
or
PHONE > ROUTER > COMPUTER / DEVICES ( I thought this would give a better wifi network signal around the house)
Anyone with some help / thoughts?
using router is better

a portable hotspot will not give them best speeds, using a router is a better option and it will give much better speed.
Hope it helps you! gudluck!
if it helps you dont forget to hit thanks button!!
I USB tether my phone to an old box that runs as a router. Works very well. Be warned though, that Three throttle tethered connections if the data use is high: and 'high' to them seems to be a trivial amount of data. I need to do some experimenting to find out how it knows it's throttled (packet inspection or AP settings) though.
