Power/Backlight settings not "sticking"? - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro General

I have an 02 XDA Exec, and have just finished installing all my apps and configuring them (took a long time!). Has anyone had any problems with the power (I'm checking to NOT power off while on battery) and the backlight settings not sticking? I'm finding that while the device is on, at some point, the settings are reverting back. Also on soft resets? Anyone heard of this?
For those curious, I'm leaving the power on because, for some reason, if I power off then power on, the unit freezes. I don't know if that's due to a bug in 02's WM5 image, or an app I'm running. So that I don't have to rebuild AGAIN, I'm electing to keep the power on so it doesn't freeze.
Any suggestions on both issues? Any seen both of these problems?
Thanks!
Marc

It might be a conflict with a program you installed. Are you using Phone Alarm? Because if you do, there is also an option there regarding Power OFF.

Christian,
Thou hast saved my sanity! That was it, exactly. Changed my backlight and power settings within phonealarm and, so far, I'm good. Thanks VERY much! (I was ready to ship this puppy back!)
Any idea on what app could be causing the freeze? (I have two batteries so it's not a huge issue if I leave it on all day).
Thanks again!

i was having these problems
but they seem to have gone for now :S

MDA PRO will not wake up from standby

Hi.
This problem has been posted before, but there was no answer, that worked for me. I was wondering, whether anyone has found a fix in the meantime:
My MDA crashes almost every night when it's in standby and can't be woken up by pressing the POWER-button.
Sometimes, this even happens during the day when it's connected to the computer, goes to standby and then is disconnected.
Only a soft reset will solve the problem.
I don't really have that much software installed, especially no Today-screen plug-ins.
However, I had task switchers such as switch and tswitch installed, which didn't work for me and thus has been removed. I have the impression, that after uninstalling these, my problems started.
One of these - I don't recall which one - has a today plug-in which monitors battery and memory capacity.
However, it seems that programs on my MDA never get completely uninstalled. The unistaller always says that it can't completely uninstall the software and whether I'd like to remove the program from the list of programs installed. So what I did was clear the device manually... maybe that was a mistake...
Any thoughts on this?
sacha
I have exactly the same problem. First I had no battery charge and then after replacing the battery, I have this problem.
Any ideas please?
Is it a hardware fault and I need to return the device?
Cheers,
Joe
I have a same problem too, but until today i don't find any problem solving. Please help.
I've had exactly the same problem with my T-mobile MDA pro. I first returned it to the shop but the tech department could not find anything. Gradually the problem got worse; in the end it would not power-up at all and I had to perform a soft-reset each time. Even with only the factory default software running. Returned it the second time and got a new machine; problem solved. So it definitely is a hardware problem.
Could this be a battery problem?
This may be dumb, but ..........
This may be wildly off but I've had two problems that looked a bit like this with my XDA exec. Sometimes when I go walkabout with the wifi left on, even though I've switched off the pda, it will refuse to wake up afterwards. This has happened a few times, but never if I switched off the wifi before going on the move. I wondered if it was trying to connect and entering some hangup state. I have heard it beeping in my pocket as I walked past wifi points and it wakes up. Obviously it isn't consistent.
The other problem happened when I first got the pda while I was carrying it in trouser pockets with the on/off button exposed (ie not in the closed end of the leather cover. It appeared to be hung up and wouldn't wake up (apparently) but all that had happened was that the backlight had been switched off by an extended press on the on / off button. That may sound really stupid, but without the backlight in some lighting conditions the screen just appears dark. I sorted that one, by ensuring the end of the pda with the on / off switch is always in the pouch and safe from being squeezed in my trouser pocket.

its a problem with the voltage control Unit on the Mainboard. My solution for my Jasjar was to install Pocket Hack Master and then disabling the CPU scaling of the Bulverde in the settings. Before turning your unit off or closing the clamshell make sure the speed is underclocked at 312 mhz..you can always set it at 520 while using it. Hope this helps!!

same problem here. sometimes i just press meny meny times (very fast) the power button and the screen turns on. other times i have to soft reset.
clemsyn i'm not sure i understand your solution. do you say that every time i want to turn of the screen i have to start PHM before, and set the speed to 320?
if this is the solution, wouldn't it be very annoying?
I've got exactly the same Problem. I've already changed the battery, flashed Original Rom, WM6 and so on. The strange behaviour of my Mda Pro still exists. After a while, the Pro switches off (Standby-Mode) and most of the time, i can switch it on with pushing the Power-On-Button. But if the Pro stays in the Stand-By-Mode for a while, i cant't bring "him" back to me. Only a Hardreset works (most of the time, i have to put in the Power-Supply, otherwhise, only the red light flashes one time when i push the reset-button).
The problem first appears, when i flashed the original Rom to WM6 (with all steps i had to do: upgrade bootloader to 1.01 and so on). Downgrading to Bootloader 1.00 didn't solve the probs.
At this point, i'am a little bit confused.....i need help
P.S:
Hopefully, my first post is not the last one

I've just read this Thread. Very good informations. So i'll try it with an original Battery...i will post my experience asap.
Not for me it worked

Hello Clemsyn,
I tried this with Pocket Hack master. First it worked and i started walking, and singing throough my house again.
And now, after a few days, it gives me the problems back. No difference if it is automatically set to standby or with the power button. sometimes I still need to reset.
Hack master gives an error when restarting, so I am sure it was switched on to this 312 speed and blocking the scaling of my Qtek.
I am tring to find a railway to put my head on!
Huib
I think we all have the same problem and no one has found the solution to it ? what a shame i-mate couldnt come up with a patch or upgraded ROM which will work hazzle free..
I have to soft reset everytime when my phone goes to standy mode and doesnt wake up.
I am sick of this **** , planning to sell my jasjar ....any takers ?not really here tho.
I had the Standby of Death SOD this is when the phone fails to come out of standby with a power button press. This issue only affects some people on some networks. I'm not sure if its a network problem or a software problem but as only a minority of people have it, I suspect its mainly a network problem there is a software solution.
The solution is to change the phone settings band option from auto 3G/2G to either 3G Only (WCDMA + UTMS 2100 in Europe) or 2G Only (GSM + AUTO) depending on your requirements.
Also read this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=540943&highlight=standby&page=2 where the resolution was to get a new SIM.
Obviously this only solves the problem when the crash is because of the sim and/or settings which impact the sim. To rule out a software cause its best to start with a hard reset.

Shutdown for Hermes

I try to use psHutXP.exe to shutdown my dopod 838Pro in 2AM, but it seems that the unit is not shut-off, it only goes to standby. Does anybody has software that can shut-off the Pocket PC (for power savings and disturbance while sleeping)?
Thanks
maybe you can try one of the various software that controls radios [cellular, bt, wireless]: PhoneAlarm and PocketZenPhone come to mind and schedule the Radios and Sounds to be OFF during the time you are resting. Having both the Radios and Sounds off will save some battery life. Dunno if there is a way to turn of the device completely and schedule a wake up after. Hope this helps
I have PhoneAlarm installed and it is actually having schedule to do "OFF" radios but what I need is to turn off for power savings and resetting the device to refresh the memory............ thanks for your reply
if you have spb backup you can set it to backup and do a soft reset afterwards [or there are other apps that can be used to schedule a soft reset] so that leaves you with the problem of complete shutdown...
Why not just press and hold the power key? You'll eventually be asked if you want to shutdown.
V
i think he wants it automated.
Sorry, my bad. I'll try to write it. Dissected the app before but the built in one was nice so no need.
V
Yes, it should be automated, totally power-off at set time (say 2AM) - no power more saving energy and it serve also as reset all application during start. - Thanks
we had a thread that dealt with making your phone reboot nightly.. i know you want to power off, but this may give you some ideas..
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=285974
I think the shutdown app is using an undocumented coredll.dll call. Will try to figure it out.
V
Thanks I hope someone do a utility for that..............

device couldn't wake up after turning to sleep mode

I just got AMEO from T mobile which I believe the same as HTC advantage.
despite of being SIM locked by T-mobile, I am experiencing another problem in waking up the device after it goes into sleep mode.
After I left the device idle for few minutes, it turn the whole screen off. (not only the back lit).
I can see the LED for BT/wifi still blinking.
But no matter which button I press, it couldn't be turn on at all.
As final resolve, I have to soft reset the device every time after it sleep!!!
Can some experts here advise me? is it a defective unit? or some other settings are wrong? Do I need to return it to the vendor?
I don't want to keep the device always on by disabling the auto off feature in power setting either.
Does someone have the same problem like me?
Thanks for any advise in advance.
What happens if you put it on the keyboard while "asleep"? Even if it means taking it off there first.
If doing that and pushing the power button fail to turn it on, it's a defective unit.
it's the same problem even i attach it to the keyboard.
a bit funny though, if i press the power button from the side to turn it off. I won't have any problem to turn it on.
but if i leave it to auto off mode, then i can't turn it on until resetting it from the back hole.
can it be improved if I flash to other ROM?
My Ameo does it occasionally - I find that (re)attaching the keyboard tends to bring it out of sleep better than pressing the power button. I get the impression that by pressing the power button, it sometimes gets confused that its still on and tries to turn itself off (even when it is already off). Tends to lead to a reboot every few days though. Waiting (fingers x'd) for WM6 to see if it behaves better.
do you guys have this option
settings>button>lock
try to toggle the checkbox to see if it helps
I'll try it! I found it under Settings/System Tab, 'Key Lock' icon.
I'll report back within the week.
I can confirm that it doesn't help my AMEO.
anyway, thank for your thought.

To digital:
can I ask for a favor from you. could you try to make the device auto power off without sim card in.
and see whether u will have the exact problem i have or more frequent it dead...
due to my unit is locked to T mobile network, i still haven't put any sim card in.
Tried it without simcard in but it still turns on ok after the fix. TBH, sounds like you're getting the issue more than me - mine only does it occasionally (once every couple-3days) and as yet, I've not managed to locate a consistent cause. I'll keep my eye on it though with the fix and let you all know how I get on.
the other thing that i can think of out of at the moment is that you are running some prog from the sd card/microdrive in the background so when you try to switch your device on then it does not get started and hence the problem...
try tweaks2k (you can use the trial version)
it has a bunch of settings for this... (just check that it is compatible with ameo first)
install 'screenoff' and assign to one of the button.
it works fine.
have to make work around like this now. no idea why this problem only happen to my AMEO...
anyway, thanks for all of u!

I have a similar problem. My device does not wake up in one case from 10 approximately.
Frequency of occurrence of a problem decreases if to close the phone's program compulsorily.
In other branch to me have told, that the problem can be because of the Active Sink's program. Have allowed advice to disconnect automatic start of this program. But I cannot check up because my program all the same is started if to switch off an option of the automatic device. :-(
hard reset can solve the problem completely. ;-)
I'm pleased to say that the 'button' tweak posted here has worked... So far!
Thanks Gents (and lasses if there are any).
That happened to me too yesterday.
I hard reset it and reinstalled everything to microdrive now. (trying to eliminate the possiblity of compaction thread) Removed SPB Pocket plus, which I've come to be quite suspecious by now. Also removed true VGA. So far I have not got a single freeze yet, touch wood. If it runs okay for a few more weeks with no freezing, will put back true VGA and see how it goes again. Will try to isolate the offending software bit by bit.
Hi,
I've had the same problem with my Advantage
After some weeks of test i have found how to solve the problem on my Advantage. perhaps it's only works on mine but you can try.
i have installed "all" progs on memory and not on microdrive. on microdrive i have only a few exe like wififofum or progs not intend to run when i turn my Athena off.
then no more problem waking up my athena.
I think the problem could be that microdrive cause a time out or thing like this when we wake up the PDA then athena freeze waiting about datas from microdrive.
then for me now it's programs like browsers, sscontact, traylaunchers etc .. => memory
programs like painting tool, etc ... => microdrive and close (kill process) them before sleep mode.
and all is ok now for me. The only freeze in 1 week was Pocket IE freezing (but the reason is pocket IE sucks)
There was actually another point that I forgot to mention concerning the freezing. I found out that the free miniSD card came with the bonus pack was actually faulty. With the pocket mechanic professional benchmark, I managed to see only less than 200kb/s read and write! I did a hard reset, and installed everything on microdrive, and touch wood, I have not got a single reset or freezing yet these two days. I install nothing into memory, as we all know that it takes up to 2 seconds to write a block of data into NOR ROM, which is why we should always shift our directory of IE cookies/history/cache away from the main memory. Since the main memory (NOR ROM) is good for executing program in place but terrible in writing, Microsoft's MikeCal thinks we should not keep any data there. (See this thread: http://blogs.msdn.com/windowsmobile/archive/2006/03/16/552996.aspx ). I try to keep the memory as free as possible to minimise compaction thread kikcing in. Will see how it goes in the next couple of weeks and take on from there.
I'm happy to confirm that, after a weeks testing, the button 'fix' seems to have resolved the issue! Thanks all.
I have been experiencing similar problems.
After being left on standby for a period of time (>10mins), the unit sometimes goes into "autistic" mode.
i.e:
Power button does not function. Unit GSM light flashes, but will not resume from sleep.
I've tried the following:
Attaching USB cable. No change.
Attaching keyboard. No change.
Calling phone. No change.
Soft reset. Starts ok.
I have now tried:
Settings/System/Key Lock
- set to 'Do not lock buttons'
However, I suspect ActiveSync.
The unit was attempting to Sync every 5 minutes, while connected with a USB cable. I therefore followed advise (read elsewhere) to create a dummy server to allow an ActiveSync schedule to be created, then deleted.
http://www.modaco.com/index.php?showtopic=246522
This is coincident with the start of the problem.

Polaris reboots and/or hangs randomly

Hello,
I have three Polaris (O2 XDA Orbit 2) here that crash randomly.
a) Sometimes they just refuse to wake up pressing power. Screen stays black, right green network LED blinks normally (as if phone is registered correctly) but the phone is NOT reachable, the mailbox answers the call
b) the device resets and reboots without any obvious reason...
the mentioned problems occur once in 1 or 2 days, not really reproducible...
Does anybody have the same behaviour? Is it a problem of installed Software?
Additional Software installed:
AvantGo
GoogleMaps
TrendMicro Office Scan
PocketCM Contacts 0.19b
Memmaid
Sprite Backup
Resco Explorer 2007, FTP, Registry
WakeUp Tweak
Calendar+
Advanced Config 2.1
TomTom 6
Battery Status Plugin + Clock
What kind of configuration you did with the Advanced Config 2.1?? the others applications are on my phone too, except Battery Status Plugin + Clock and WakeUp Tweak
is there any option to export the config? Its hard to type everything...
WakeUp Tweak is necessary for Alarm Bug prevention (IMHO) and does only set 2 reg keys AFAIK
nobody who has the same issue?
Can DirectPush can be the reason? I am connected with an SBS 2003 Exchange almost all the time...
Thx for an help,
Hmm... I have the same issues and im am using direct push as well. I am going to disable direct push for a few days to see if that will solve the problems...
One more thing. Apart from direct push we are both using resco explorer 2007 but I don´t think that this has something to do with the problems.
I would try to uninstall batterystatus had the issue too had to do hardreset.
The Bleedin' Obvious...
Apologies if this is just too damn obvious to be of any use, but on earlier XDA models I have had problems with poor connections on batteries, so I would check:
1. That your SIM is clean and properly seated - reseat if necessary
2. That your battery terminals are making good contact with no potential obstructions and that it latches properly when closed
3. Try removing, cleaning and reinserting any SD card you may have inserted
That should eliminate any hardware-based causes. The only other thing that I recall having caused problems in the past (on the Artemis) was battery status - especially it's behaviour on boot (and wake??). Might be worth removing it for a bit to see if it makes any difference.
Good luck...there's always return to manufacturer - you might just have a dodgy unit?
Hi, I have the same problem as you (the first one only).
Do you use push mail palmbluetooth? I am trying to test if it has something to do with direct push. I turned it off right after yesterdays post and had no black screen or reboot since. But well... It will take some more days to figure if direct push and these problems are related.
exactly the same problem.
Hi,
I have exactly the same problem of hazardous reboot.
I have a Cruise with the SFR (Vodaphone French) ROM.
I have see it live twice while my phone was on my table without having touch it.
I'll test this like you without 3G a few days and let you know.
hardware is not be the reason, although its worth to check. But it happens also if the unit is laying on the table without touching it at all...
batterystatus is NOT the reason, had reboots without it installed, can someone verify?
Resco Explorer 2007 is NOT the reason, had reboots without it installed, can someone verify?
Direct Push is the open issue to check. Without this enabled, I have a stable unit for 32 days but I'll try many more since this was not so often...
Any comments are appreciated but its definitely NOT a faulty unit since all three of mine have the same issue. Faulty firmware? Faulty OS ;-)
CU
do you have bandswitch installed?
your is a software installed problem mate!
Report here all software installed, bye
Still no reboot or hang since disabling direct push... I did not change something else and had reboots or hangs nearly every day. Would be great to know if it is really direct push/active sync...
same with my device, I think DirectPush is the reason. Can somebody else confirm?
You guys mean to tell me that direct push, which is built into the OS and is a major component of AS on the device for years doesn't work? Come on now. I refuse to believe it. If it truly caused instability like you guys say, that would be an even BIGGER issue than the lack of video drivers!
If anything, there must a software conflict going on that is causing the instability. As a true test, try hard resetting and without installing anything, turn on AS push. Wait a day and let us know what happens.
I'll be getting my TC tomorrow and loading it up to the hilt, including setting it up for my 4smartphone account.
Well... It may sound strange but I really start to belive that this is a direct push issue. I did not have these reboots and hangs right from the start and thought about what I have done before getting the problems. I uninstalled a lot of software and nothing changed. After reading the post of avoigt about direct push I remembered that I did enable this right before the issues started. On the other hand I would not bet all my money that it is really direct push causing the problems but it is the No.1 candidate now.
I am not willing to do a hard reset right now and test just direct push course I need some of the installed components for my working days. I hope someone else is able to test that. I would even offer my exchange server for testing...
Exactly the same problem (Polaris hangs or reboots) several times a day. Removed Direct Push and have not had a problem in three days. I set the schedule in ActiveSync to every five minutes. Also changed the GPRS connection to "Always on".
Same problem!!
My Polaris just cuts completely off a few times a day or screen goes black and can't awaken it. It was working fine for weeks and just started doing this.
I do have bandswitch installed and I do not use direct push.
EDIT: When I push on the battery it turns off. I hope its the battery and not the contacts.
Hi, same problem here.
The original version was the french ROM, and it worked for a week without any problem. (I have the phone for only one week). Last night I flashed it with a english version, and installed only 2 programs, skype and core player.
Facts:
1. if the phone is usb connected with the computer, it doesn't turn off.
2. if the phone is going in power save mode automatically refuses to turn back on by pressing the power button. It's like the display is disabled. If I call my number when is down like this, from the phone that I am calling from I can here the call, but the HTC doesn't ring.
3. it goes off after about 2 minutes if is innactive, and I can turn it back on only by reset. If I am using the phone (playing, browsing, etc.) it doesn't turn off.
I guess it's a soft problem. (but then again, I'm just a beginner user with this phone)
Does anyone has a solution for this?
Thanks

[Q] TM HTC HD2 screen keeps coming on.. causing battery to drain within 12hrs

Hi there,
Recently purchased TM Leo and I am on stock ROM 2.13531.1 (90963) WWE.. for last 2 days the cell backlight keeps coming on indicating that some program is running in the background.. causing the battery to drain within 12hrs with little use. Tried flwg to solve the issue:
1] thinkin it cud be due to additionally loaded programs.. tried hard reset and reverted to stock rom but the problem persists. I'd ESET AV, Skype for WM, GPSed, pocket RAR & cleanRAM installed.
Even d cleanRAM Level-2 purge & hard reset has not solved d issue. task manager does not show any programs running.
2] to my understanding some additional process running in d background is causing d issue.. but i dont possess sound knowledge to kill d processes. FYG flwg processes r available to kill thru cleanRAM:
Below list: process name (my understanding.. pls correct, if wrong)
NK (understand its a kernel - cannot be killed)
BTTrayCE (general - shud not cause d issue)
AudioManager_en (not sure)
voicecmd (dont use - can be killed)
AlbumSearcher (dont use - can be killed)
poutlook (required)
SyncManager (general - shud not cause d issue)
imforwarding (dont use - can be killed)
EsetOAMobile (required)
manila (required)
siHome (not sure)
siwatcher (not sure)
tmail (not sure)
BTW.. m in India n using unlocked (code fm T-Mo) Leo on Vodafone india.
Appreciate ur response & help.. its frustrating to charge twice a day..

Many events can trigger the backlight, e.g. sms, email, reminders, alarms, etc. And the settings are all in different places.
Instead of trying to find out what is turning it on, why don't you just change your power settings, e.g. when on battery, dim or standby after 1 minute of no activity. That way, even if it turns on, it will turn off after the inactivity period. You can change the power settings at: Settings|Sound & Display|Backlight

My backlight settings r at 30s/1min. Understand that.. but it happens way too often.. say avg every 3 mins. besides initially this phenomenon wasn't happening earlier n battery wud last easy for a day with similar use.
thanks thou.
When you did a hard reset and without installing any programs, does this problem occur? If not, then install one program and a time and observe if it happens.
If your HD2 is turning on every 3 minutes then something is definitely wrong.
i use netripper's proximity screen off to disable backlight when not in use. look for it here in xda. the backlight turns on for so many reasons we're not aware of and when one of the hard keys is pressed inadvertently, e.g. even inside the bag or pocket. this app turns it off, thus saving battery, using the proximity screen. i always put my hd2 upside down on the table for example and let this app take care of turning off the screen for me.

Did you find a fix for this? My tmo hd2 is doing the same thing, screen keeps waking up every 30 sec to a min killing my battery. Im running kumar 2.9. tried reflashing, hard reset, tast 29, flashed new radio, nothing seems to slove this.
This sounds like the "car kit issue" again. Basically the contacts within the USB port corrode and it shorts out 2 pins that are meant to be shorted out with a resistor when the car kit is plugged in, this signals the HD2 to stay turned on, and to usually launch the navipanel, speaker phone enabled by default in calls.
Unfortunately there is no known fix for this you will have to do a warranty swap though t-mobile. I had to swap mine for this very reason about a month and a half ago.
I now keep tape over my USB port to keep debris and moisture out. i am on the lookout for a rubber plug to fit in there. I charge my batteries using a standalone charger, physically swaping out the battery in the phone every morning. Added benefit of the phone getting a reboot in the morning. It also comes in handy because I now have 3 batteries and can bring spares along when i know ill be away from a power source awhile and be using the phone alot.
There is a whole thread about this issue in the normal HD2 forum http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=619859
Thanks for the info. I looked at mine, it looked ok little dirt nothing big. Cleaned it out, but still did it. So I put it back to bone stock, even took off the hspl. That seemed to do the trick, it not waking up by itself any more. The rom I updated must of messed up the hspl some how.
