MP3 Quality problems - P3600 General

I have noticed that after switching to the Dopod test rom with GPS, the quality of the sound I got from my mp3's was severely degraded. It had a nice deep bass quality on the old HTC rom when plugged into the aux input on my car stereo. Now on the new rom it sounds like all the low register sounds have been cut out and it sounds really tinny and hollow.
The only other thing I could think of is that I got one of the HTC Y cables for allowing charging and audio out at the same time. I don't know what to blame since I used the new rom and the new cable at the same time.
Could anyone tell me if it is more likely a problem with the rom (is anyone else on the Dopod test rom noticing this) or maybe a connection problem caused by the new Y cable? (it fit rather tight on first plug in)
Any thoughts are much appreciated. Even if it's just to say that you sound quality is fine with the new rom. Regards.

same problem
after one week of nice using of the new GPS activated ROM , yesterday evening I noticed the same .
Using my bluetooth stereo headset , I noticed that really the quality has been degraded in comparison with the performance with the origina HTC ROM.
I hope that the next new rom upgrade will fix this point !!!

Thanks tower. At least I know I'm not going crazy!
Anyone else? Maybe you haven't checked yet...

Bump
This is a pretty big issue as far as I can see! Anybody? I've added a poll...

I agree.
I used the new Dopod ROM with GPS (1.23.707.4).
the sound is completely lacking bass for mp3. it sounds like tin can.
My previous ROM (french 1.15.406.2) was much better in this aspect.
I am thinking downgrading because of that but I would like to keep the GPS so I am wondering if Dopod ROM 1.23.707.2 is OK with mp3.
I also have to add that m4a files (aac) are OK. Plenty of bass for them.
It is strange because if something was wrong with codec only media player would be affected by the problem. tcpmp, coreplayer use their own codec. but yet the problem is also there.

I downgraded to 1.23.707.2.
mp3 problem is still there.
It seems to be less obvious though. But maybe it's just me trying to find differences...
I will use aac (sound is perfect with it) until problem is fixed
I will try to export registry settings and compare with original ROM.

You should add a different poll:
If mp3 quality is indeed degraded, would you choose GPS over better MP3 quality or the opposite?

what happen with the last "test rom"
did naybody test the audio performances of the last " new test GPS rom" ?
is it nice as the "original HTC ROM " ?

I converted a couple of my tracks with deeper bass to aac so I could test this theory and found no appreciable difference in quality. It doesn't even sound like the bass is present at all! Maybe I'm doing something wrong with my encoding...but I don't think so. Crossing my fingers for an eventual HTC fix...then this device would be truely perfect IMHO.
@meroupow: Thanks for the suggestion anyway!!!

Just flashed the final Dopod ROM 1.23.707.6.
Still the same problem with mp3 and DIVX files (as sound is mp3...).
Also I am sure that m4a files are fine. I used itunes to convert mp3 and the resulted file has got normal bass and is perfectly fine.
Also for video I use MP4 ASP IPOD profile and the sound is OK.
So I can listen to music and watch videos.
Therefore I will keep the ROM with GPS.
Also I noticed that the sound is much more stronger with the Dopod ROM than my original french ROM.
Here in europe there are laws for music players to limit the max level of sound.
I am very glad to see it's only controlled by software by HTC.
For Ipods I think it's controlled at hardware level and there is nothing to do...

@ meroupow
I used dbpoweramp to convert my mp3's to aac (m4a), and got no results. I will try iTunes and see if I get any better results. At least I'll know that I did the same thing you did! I am really jealous...I can't even stand listening on my car stereo anymore - I just get really pissed and shut it off!
But I wouldn't give up the GPS for it - and I don't think I should have to!
By the way, I also flashed to the Dopod ROM 1.23.707.6.

ok now I find no bass at all even with aac...
I use version 1.23.707.6.
I have been messing a lot this week end with ROMs (1.23.707.4 then 2 then 6) and I started to encode aac a lot because it was fine.
And now I am completely unable to get the bass back.
I am not even sure when I lost it.
It maybe a soft I installed or something in the extended ROM.
Maybe I will try a hard reset with soft reset to prevent ext ROM to install...

No luck with iTunes either. I am as "bassless" as most of my wife's arguments!
Come on HTC...get that new rom ready!

Did anyone try to alter the registry yet? I noticed some bass-keys that are set to 0:
HKCU\ControlPanel\AudioAdvContrl\Bass : 0
HKCU\ControlPanel\AudioAdvContrl\SuperBass : 0
HKCU\ControlPanel\AudioAdvContrl\Treble : 0
HKCU\ControlPanel\AudioAdvContrl\ToneEnable : 1
Maybe these help?

Thanks for looking these up, oVan. I'll give this a try to see if it helps. I'll also temporarily roll back to the HTC ROM to check these settings for comparison.

I'll be interested in your results! I had a couple of seconds at work to mess with these values, and indeed they seemed to make some sort of audio difference. I'd love to be able to copy the values from the original HTC rom, but I thought I read that I wouldn't be able to roll back even to check them because the bootloader version on the Dopod rom is now too high (I paid for the CID unlock). Maybe I misunderstood. I wish you success and anxiously await the results!!

I still have the original ROM and these registry values are the same as you have now.

but maybe the old rom ignored them and the new rom uses them

Yes, the old ROM has the exact same values. Has anyone tried changing these values with any promising results?

Ok, I got my bass back with aac and ROM 1.23.707.6.
You have to use windows media player. ;-)
Windows media player for pocket pc only played mp3 and wma before but for trinity they added support for mp4 asp and aac for video recording through ATI imageon encoder/decoder.
Thus I think when sound goes through imageon it is not degraded.
only uses imageon for video and aac is bassless.
same for mortplayer and all other softwares.
Somebody can confirm wmp+aac is working?

Motorola HT820 + Trinity

Would the Motorola HT820 headphones work on Trinity?
They're working fine for me; the only tweak I did was to disable the JointStereo so I have proper stereo audio - there are a million threads about that around here, it's in the registry.
I have the SYN0948D model of the HT820, which I think is the newest, for previous ones there's a flash firmware update that may fix some skipping.
oh! Mind answering some questions for me?
How are they for music? Sound good? Any major problems? I use TCPMP for music.... will the controls work that are on the headphones themselves? How about the battery life (of the phone and the headphones?).
It seems the headphones also have a mic? Does that work with the phone?
Id appreciate if you could answer these for me... thanks!
The sound quality for music is certainly not what I'd call perfect.
Put it this way: I attached them using the supplied 2.5 -> 3.5 mil connector to my high-end audio card in my PC, and they sounded pretty good for headphones of their size.
However, when running over Bluetooth there is a noticeable drop in audio fidelity. I don't know whether to attribute that to the Trinity or to the headphones, but I suspect the Trinity. Maybe it's downmixing the audio?
There is a lot of A2DP tweaking you can do to find the best balance between audio quality and skipping/reception; I left it fairly close to the defaults for now, and I'll probably play with it more later.
The mic works with the phone and the audio quality for voice calling is outstanding. It sure makes a difference to hear a person in both ears - when I use them I almost never have to ask a person to repeat themselves. I haven't heard what anyone else sounds like when calling from the Ht820s, but friends say that they can hear a slight echo depending on the room I'm in. Makes sense because the room I usually call from is a smallish office/den with wood floors and lots of echoes.
I am going to fire up TCPMP right now to try to play a song with it. I've been using PocketMusic but it sucks balls...
Plays the song just fine, but it doesn't seem to support the next/prev track buttons at all. I tried to map them in the Hot Keys section, no dice.
PocketMusic and WMP both seem to work with the buttons, for what that's worth.
If you need anything else, just PM me like last time.
Yah I tried pocketmusic... it blows. I use tcpmp for everything. I suppose I can just use the controls on the phone itself.
I currently use the shure buds.... I hope Im not too used to the great quality ive been getting on them.

motorola ht820 sound quality issue!

hello everyone,
i FINALLY got my bt headset working and now im able to listen to mp3 in stereo quality
but the quality is a really big disappointment! During the playback there is some kind of a noise in the background, its hard to describe how it sounds, but its aweful certainly and makes the listening to music painful! it only happens in certain sound frequencys, especially those where there is a human voice.
I have no problem with bass, or instrumentals only. The hardware buttons for forward / back and so on works fine, there is some stuttering from time to time, i can bear that. But that background noise is unbearable.
What might be the problem? did I forget to install some protocol? Or does the motorola just suck? (hardware problem?)
I would be glad if someone can come up with an answer!
ok,
let me clarify about the noise: its a high frequent sharp sound, just ANNOYING!
Dumb question : you have checked the audio files are otherwise good ? It sounds similar to a 'cooked' mp3 file.
hey, i did check the audio files, and they are fine!
I just found out that it is a common problem having the high pitch noise while listening to mp3 via bluetooth.
After reading this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=968791#post968791
I tried out the registry hacks and it DID NOT help! Whenever I tried to add the key:
HKLM/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Bluetooth/AD2P/Settings/BitPool
(Dword: 60)(Default is 30)
it just automatically disappeared after a softreset, the key isnt there by default.
Im using the lvsw aku 2.3.1 rom.
What can I do? Please HELP!
ps, i found out if i turn down the treble, it reduces the high pitches. but that cant be the real deal! it must be some other way!?
update:
i have installed the aku33_a2dp.cab provided by "joe_dude" and change the registry values like usejointstereo=0
but nothing works, still got this annoying high pitch noise...
Hi savant,
I am using the ht820 with a imate jamin, and have no problem at all. i followed the procedure laid out in the following thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=263745.
Make sure that you read the complete thread as there is a cab file that edits the registry for you. I tried it and mine worked flawlessly the first time. I am using pocketmusic as my mp3 player.
hello cvrbit!
thank you for replying, the link you gave me is about the installation of a2dp protocoll on the prophet, which I already did.
I have double checked my registry and all the necessary keys are there. I even use a newer a2dp protocoll from the acu 3.3
I searched everywhere on google and in this forum it seems there is no real solution to that.
It does seem that some HT820 user have no high pitch noise issue and some do, I dont know why.

Audio problem with built in fm radio

Hi, Trying again in this forum as no answers in Themes and software one.
Audio booster works well with music player - really makes a difference.
But sometimes I like to listen to the built in FM radio - It's great for commuting. The problem is the sound is quite low and the Audio booster makes no difference to it. I tried SRS WOW HD but that produced no sound untill i tweaked the registry - then I got sound but no ability to enable SRS.
I know this is fairly low on peoples priority list but please, if anyone has any ideas, I'd be really gratefull
have u installed HD tweak, it has options to increase sound level and improve radio reception.
Thanks Zesper,
Yeah - tried that but no joy playing thru ear phones - it's still pretty quiet

To be honest, it doesn't make much sense as the System volume controls both music and radio and if I turn the radio up fully on mine, it'll probably burst my eardrums it's that loud.
Perhaps you have a hardware problem, but you could try a hard reset just to be sure it's not the software configured incorrectly somewhere. Try the radio out before installing anything else.
I too find the radio volume to be too low. No such problem with music player.
I have the same problem. Audio Booster don't work with FM Radio.
Probably something wrong with Dutty's V3.3 XT ROM, in my previous ROM there was not those problems.
optxperiabeta02
I got this file from a Russian website. It worked very well on my Xperia. You'll probably have to turn down the system volumes a fair bit though.

Strange problem with MP3 playback - missing vocal

Hi.
I have a strange problem with MP3 playback with some songs; when listen on headphones, everything is fine, but when I listen on speaker, some songs are missing vocals; you can hear just instruments, and veeerrryyy faintly vocals; like they are in other room. But when I connect headphones, that same song sounds OK. And I have that issue with just few songs; others sound OK on speaker and headphones, and they work fine on computer.
I have tried with stock player and winamp, but i got same problem on both of them.
Wow. You have a one of a kind karaoke phone ! Sell it to someone in Japan and buy 10 new phones. Other then that I have no idea except install a different Rom to rule out software problem
Written using grafitti on a Palm VII with 8 megs of ram and overclocked to 32mhz!

Hehe; it would be nice if there was a switch to turn this on or off and if it will work on all songs Then it will be nice feature
I didn't change my firmware, so I still have 2.1 stock JM1. And this problem was present from first day, but I didn't care about it, because it was present only on two songs that I have.

[Q] HD2 low headphone volume

Does anyone have the lowdown on whether the HD2 sold in Europe suffers from the dreaded "EU volume limiter" and if so, is it limited to 100dB or 85dB?
Been a few threads on this subject already, and interestingly some people say they don't experience the problem, others do.
Currently using stock ROM 3.14.206.1 and wondered if the ROM version might make a difference.
I find that the supplied earbuds are quite loud but poor quality. They seem to be more sensitive than most standard headsets. If you substitute a decent headset the volume is just adequate on loud pop tracks with all controls maxed-out. It's too quiet to be usable on classical though, or on any low-level recordings. The same headset gives plenty volume on my HTC Wizard, as do a set of TDK earbuds.
I solved Android flashed 2.3.3 and using the original player with an app called Music fx, wow, it's a totally different world!

Was thinking of testing it with Android on the SD card anyway as that would pin down whether it's a software or hardware/firmware issue. From what you say it sounds like it's in the OS, so in principle it should be fixable.
Tried using TCPMP instead of WMP and this seems to indicate the player software isn't the cause.
I'd rather keep WM6.5 as the main OS for the moment as I've quite a few good apps.
Anyway, I've asked HTC if they can confirm whether this example has volume limiting or not. If yes, I'll be poking-around for a crack.
Strangely, results seem to vary between one startup and another. Last night I had it playing acceptably at 3/4 volume but today it's reverted to needing everything at max.
Not sure if Volumex fixes that, you can try though...
