TyTn Wifi Problems - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam General

I have a cingular 8525 branded HTC TyTn and have experienced quite a lot of wifi problems. I don't know if it's me or the device or the software, but I am looking for some other input.
The problem is that if I enable wifi, it does not see any wireless networks. If I hand punch in the SSID it will go ahead and connect just fine. I can use the wireless network and everything appears great for the moment. When I'm done using the wifi and disable it in the comm manager the device still thinks it connected via wifi. IE won't try to connect to gsm automatically, it just says locating and eventually fails. The wifi antenna in the top bar never disappears to goes back to a G. The only way I've found to get it to connect back to gsm is to remove all wifi SSID settings and soft reset.
Another oddity, when I power my device on, wifi is always enabled. Is this normal?
I thought it might just be me, but a co-worker of my just got a cingular 8525 and his does the exact same thing.
Any help or insights anyone can provide would be extremely helpful.

Hi.
Couple of points.
Yes the Wifi remains on unless you turn it off. So when you turn back on it will re-connect.
Regarding your problem re-connecting. Some people seem to find absolutely no problems connecting and others barely manage if at all to connect. There can be many different set-ups routers, settings etc that can be at fault. However in your case when you clear out settings and start afresh all works well. I suspect an issue with renewing the the IP address.
1
So you could try "fixing" the IP address ie removing the DHCP dynamic allocation of the IP.
or
2
You can try "Hitchhiker" which is afreeware application that takes care of a number of background setup issues one of which is automatically re-assigning the IP address. (also allows cutting and pasting the WEP key if you use it - saves a lot of typing).
I use this app with mine whenever connections are sticking. I let Hitchhiker sort things out and then I turn off hitchhiker wich disconnects me, but then I find the normal way of connecting me works fine. Of course you can use Hitchhiker routinely to connect and it does make things easier if your connecting to Hotspots etc.
Hitchhiker is available here as is .net compact framework 2 which is required for it to work. Some people seem to have difficulties with Hitchhiker but it's always worked perfectly for me after a soft reset with my device.

I had a number of connection problems with APs whose encryption was set to WPA/WPA-2 (dual mode WPA) as opposed to WPA or WPA2. Switching the AP to just WPA fixed the problem as WM5 doesn't support WPA2.
Speaking of which: does anyone know if Crossbow has WPA2 support (when it was released for XP it was freakin' huge so I'm not expecting anything here).
As for the WiFi connection being persistent in PIE and other apps even after it's been disabled: check the connection setting for your AP profile (Comm manager>WLAN settings>Menu>Network Cards) see if the 'connects to:' setting is on 'The Internet'.

XDA2ii can't connect to WIFI at home

Hi!
Before I start tese are my current system info:
XDA2ii (O2) - UK
ROM version 1.10.00 WWE
ROM date:24/12/2004
Radio ver: 1.00.00
Protocol version: 1337.39
ExtROM version: 1.10.124 WWE
OS: Windows Mobile 2003 2nd Edition
Version 4.21.1088 (build 14235.2.0.0)
I am trying to connect to my home WIFI network but I can't seem to connect. It is indeed picking up the server (name appears) in list but just stops at connection to network. It can't seem to get any connection at all. My wireless router (Linksys WRT54G) can't seem to detect it as well.
I have tried connection to WIFI at an airport and it seems to work but not at home. I have set my Linksys to Mixed mode (B and G) but still can't get it to work.
Any advice?
Thank you!!!
XDA IIi (or 2i) and 3COM WAP
Hi.
Got the exact same (everything) XDA IIi model (also O2/UK). I'm also having problems with WLAN/WIFI connectivity both at work and home. Both cases it's a 3COM OfficeConnect WAP (office one not setup by me). I thought I validated that the XDA seems to be OK by being able to connect to a neighbours WAP (some BT-Voyager thing) with no apparent problems. And so was thinking that the problem is with the 3COM WAP. However, your post raises doubts on my conclusion ...
The search goes on ...
Re: XDA IIi (or 2i) and 3COM WAP
hi
My case is even worse, it can not detect any wifi signal at any of the hotspot in my city. Go to wireless Lan Manager, under WLAN button (red status) there is alwayls a sentence: "no connection in use". Clicking to it, the device seem to search but found nothing.
Try softreset, hardreset but the problem remains.
In addition, I try to turn off the phone (turn on flight mode) then it don't allow to turn on bluetooth and wifi too.
Maybe it is due to hardware error.
Really disappoint with O2 UK

WiFi connection problems with XDA2i
I have exactly the same O2 xda2i build as Johnnyboy, and precisely the same problem with WiFi as Blackwolf and Johnnyboy. I have a netgear WiFi access point at home, and have disabled the attach restriction and removed WEP. However, although the XDA can see the network name, it cannot connect to the network (just displays connecting...) nor does it show anything on the signal bar. Needless to say, it does not display SSID, Tx rate, Channel, IP address or any information from the network.
I have bought this device specifically for wifi access, and it is somewhat disappointing. Anyone have any idea how this can be fixed? (if at all :? )
XDA Wi-Fi Successful Connection!!!
Hi,
I'm new to the forum and new to XDA2i....
I too had many frustrations connecting the wi-fi...but now I've cracked it, here's how.......
On first very first use (or following a hard re-set) device users are prompted to choose “What do you want WLAN to connect to?” The option bullets are ‘Internet’ or ‘Work’….’Work’ should be selected, this will connect them to the nearest WLAN (if this network is WEP encrypted it should be switched to ‘Open’ rather than ‘shared’ as is often the case).
Next prompt asks for any WEP Encryption ‘Pass Key’ to be input, when doing so omit any ‘-‘ between character pairs. Normal start-up should then be completed. Once device is up and running…..
From ‘Start’ pull-down on the ‘Today Screen’ select…. ‘settings’>’connections tab’>’connections icon’>’advanced tab’>’Select Networks’> pull-down ‘My Work Network’ > ‘OK’ out of selections to save and exit.
Go to ‘Wireless Manager’ in programs, select WLAN icon from main screen (which should turn green to show active), then select mini ‘WLAN’ icon from lower toolbar to see the status of the connection, quality of signal etc.
That did it for me......
Cheers
Finally cracked it! As I never had any problems with my Netgear MR814 wireless router, I assumed the issue was with the XDA2i. Instead, a router firmware upgrade did the trick! Should have thought of that earlier.
Cheers, S.
When i first got my XDA 2i home from the shop the first thing it tried was the wireless lan, and the same thing happend to me also..... everything fine in the router but still unable to connect the xda.
anyway after few hours of going over every single setting time and time again , it finally worked !!
i left the Wlan enabled and after a period of a few minutes it connected to my network.
So i think the XDA 2i is quite tempremental with Wlan, as i know my settings were correct.
having said that, i have had no problems with Wlan t all since then, it will now even connect to other Wlan hotspots with no problems whatsoever.
The only problem i have now is recieving a decent O2 Cellphone signal i my area
Well I have a XDA IIi and it connects fine and allways has to Citi Hotspots, TMO hotspots and my own Linksys WRT54GS. Netgear is the biggest piece of crap ever sold. If you have one I suggest you soak it in gas and burn it.
I had a problem with my XDA IIi connecting to a home Wi-Fi network with a Linksys WRT54GC router: a signal showed in the Wireless LAN Manager, including an IP address, but the WI-Fi icon at the top of the Today screen had no connection bars. After days of this I went to the Linksys settings for an unrelated reason and disabled Wireless SSID Broadcast. Inexplicably this appeared to cure the WiFi problem with the XDA IIi, and I can now connect with ease.
Ok, I might as well add my question to this thread, as it's relevant.
I have an O2 UK XDA2i, and I've also experienced similar problems connecting the wifi and managing to get it to work properly.
I'm at Uni in Birmingham, and at some of my faculties there's wifi for students and staff to use - they give the broadcast SSID UCEOpenAccess, and you use your system logon (in my case STUDENTS\F05310011 and my password (secret ).
I have these details set in the LEAP tab of my wireless lan config (in the WLAN settings) - I have an entry named UCEOpenAccess, and I have my username and password (and domain) set correctly, and the auth type set to Open System (as opposed to EAP, doesn't seem to make any difference whatever I set it to)...
... I just can't connect to any wifi network! I can't even _SEE_ the wifi network, and I know it's there, I can pick up other wifi networks and detect them using Wifi Graph and Hitchiker. I just, bizarrely, can't see the one wifi network I'm trying to connect to.
It's incredibly frustrating. I have my network adapter set to connect to Work (as I've seen advised on these forums), and my IP is assigned via DHCP (they use a weird class b subnet for their network), and the proxy to connect to the Internet is also setup correctly in my Network (This network connects to the Internet checked, This network uses a proxy to connect to the Internet, and proxy is specified in the box), and as the proxy is a SOCKS 5 authenticating proxy, all the relevant details and username+password are in place in the Advanced settings.
Still doesn't work!
Is it due to my original (and decrepit, from the looks of things) firmware and software versions? I'm running original radio, is that a problem maybe? I've scouted about quickly for updates from O2 for my XDA, but I don't want to install a Japanese update as I don't reallllly want to have to read Japanese (and I can't, etc) - I don't want to make a brick out of this brand new phone, but the resources for total xda newbs is somewhat lacking. Can someone just poke me in the right direction with a stick?
Cheers all.

Having Problems Connecting with Wifi!

I have a MDA PRO
Rom Version: 1.12.42 wwe
Radio : 1.08.00
Protocol: 42.41.P8
Ext rom: 1.12.126 WWE
What I want to do: I am trying to connect to the internet using pocket internet explorer using my wifi network at home and not GPRS.
The problem: I go to 'Settings' >>"connections" tab >> 'Network Cards'>> "wirelss" tab
It displays my wifi connection and it says "available" so I {tap and hold} and select 'connect'. It then states that it is 'connecting' but it doesnt connect and reverts back to saying that my network is "available'.
What am I doing wrong? Do I have to set up something on my pc? Any additional settings on my Universal that i should initiate?
I tried searching the forum with no luck in finding someone with the same problem. Is there a thread with a guide that can help me out. Thanks for your time.
soft reset the phone
then no need to go into settings
on today screen (main screen) touch the "G" at the top
it will ask you if you want to activate wifi
select
it should connect automatically
I have exactly the same problem with my M5000.
Can anyone help?
Are your home wireless networks protected (eg WEP or WPA) ? If so - and I would hope so - then are you using the applicable WEP/WPA settings and key when trying to connect ?
Worth also trying to set the IP address manually on the PDA, see if this helps ?
For me, the first thing to do when experiencing wireless probs is to temporarily disable any encryption and see if it works then.....and then re-enable, carefully inputting key etc.

What happened there !
On the Blue Angel, it was simple - you just set up a new connection, enter the PSK, connect and off you go!
On the Universal, however, I'm having no joy. I've set up the WEP and PSK stuff and the PDA can connect to the network, but when I try and open IE it opens up GPRS. Also, PC Anywhere only works via USB - again, it won't connect via WiFi. I'm sure it's just a case of adjusting some settings but I don't know which ones!
Wifi Connection Problems
Hi I'm experiencing exactly the same problems trying to connect.
I have a Wanadoo Livebox and my xda exec.
I've tried with my connection both unsecured and with 128bit wep encryption using the correct wep key....I still get connecting, followed by available, repeated continuously?
I have the xda set to connect to "the internet" and the authentication to "open". Key index is 1.
Can anyone help?
Thanks

Wifi Connection Problems
Hi, Just a bit more info...
Encryption is set to "wep"
Mac address is associated with the livebox.
802.1x is ticked to use IEEE 802.1x network access control.
EAP type is Smart cCard or Certificate

I just checked (with my Blue Angel) that the router and everything else is working and I'm happy to say it all is.
I set up the new connection on the BA from scratch - WPA-PSK enabled, nice long PSK, and I'm using TKIP. Network connects to: The Internet.
This allows me to remote up to the PC via PC Anywhere, and allows me to connect to the 'Net for free via the WiFi router.
When I duplicate the settings on the Universal, neither of the above works. What am I doing wrong?
Help!
You haven't got mac address filtering enabled on your router, and have forgotten to add your Universal's mac address to the list, have you?
Cheers,
Steve.
No, it's disabled.
hehe i had this problem tonight and was going to post up.
Has your router got MAC-control or anything on it? My SSID is not set to broadcast so I put the settings in manually.
I deleted the settings, and put them in manually again a few times, making sure I had the encryption stuff set correctly.
Eventually it connected and now seems to be working fine.

Ad Hoc?
Ok, I've tried every possible combination possible and nothing is helping. So my next question to get around this problem>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Can I use my pc as a ad-hoc and us it as my gateway for my Universal?
I have a pc in the office down the hall with the actually wireless router, I have a pc in my room that is accessing the wireless router from the office.
Please let 'US' know if you have tried ad hoc or if you find the right settings to connect to the main wireless router.
Thank you
I am on my wifi network typing this, and my settings show 802.1x network access control not having a tick and network adapter connected to Work......on my iPaq hx4700 before, I used these same settings as they seemed to work well, although it ran WM2003SE not WM5.....
All this said, however, but I was lucky in that my MDA Pro connected to my wifi network at the first attempt - except not with as strong a signal as the iPaq had.....
Wifi Settings
Can anyone who has connected okay, let us have their full settings, so that we can try them?
Is your Router set 802.11g only?
You need to set the router to accept 802.11b and 802.11g.
If your router will only output at 54g, you could try the hack to switch the universal to 54g. I am yet to try this so I don't know if it works.
My MDA Pro connected straight out of the box once I set the ssid and encryption.
Hope this helps
Dave
I've been on the phone talking to 3rd line support at Orange.
Basically, the guy is totally flummoxed!
After trying to talk me through the setup from memory, it seems as though a whole menu of WiFi settings has disappeared from the phone - specifically, the ones that we need! This being the case, he's going to get hold of an M5000 tomorrow and will then bell me back so we can go through the whole process together, both of us using an M5000.
One thought that did occur to me was this: I've only just (like, 3 days ago!) upgraded to the M5000 and I've taken on some kind of free Internet access scheme with my tariff. Could it be that the settings for that (that are sent by Orange in a data SMS) have knackered the WiFi setup?
I'm considering a hard reset with a soft reset before the .CAB files install but will at least wait until tomorrow.
I'll keep you all posted....

WIFI problems

In my nouse I have an WIFI network with WPA and WPA2. When I use encryption, even WEP, te connection is established but after a few seconds of data transfer, there is connection goes dead. I tested an open connection, a WEP 64, 128, WPA en WPA2 connection. All except the open unencrypted connection stop working after a few seconds. The Ameo keeps being connected to the accespoints, but there is no traffic anymore.
Has somebody else had this problem? I will try a hard reset to test it with a clean install.
Gerald
Hi there what make is your Access point? (is it a Belkin or Netgear possibly?)
Accespoints
I have a Zyxel 2602HW and a SMC2870W.
You've not got a 3G data session already established have you? I'm guessing its a WM5 'feature' rather than a specific Ameo fault, but if you're got 3G running, then connect to a Wireless Access Point, it gets itself all confused and tries to use the 3G connection for net access. I normally just quickly turn the phone service off and on, once the wifi service is running, via comm manager.
I've also noticed something else, where if I'm sending or receviing e-mail, and I'm already connected to the wifi point, it doesn't know to use the 3G connection rather than the wifi point to access the t-mobile servers. You have to close the wifi session before it is able to send/receive the messages (which don't always immediatly retry) but I'm guessing that maybe I could do something with routing on the Ameo. I need to get a grounding of the network stack on it before I can do it.
No, I tested it by putting it in flight mode and then enable wifi. When I do not use encryption, there is no problem. It works and I can watch ip televison. But when I use encryption, I cannot get a connection with whatever url within seconds. Only reconnect give me again a few seconds. It is frustrating. My MDA PRO and my DELL X30 do not have any problems at all.

yeah i think it happended to me as well..i cannot get connected gor long...at always disconnected and connect again...
one more thing..my previous UNI it always auto detect..but not with dopod..
Compatibility
I found that the Athena is compatible with 3Com accesspoint but not with Zyxel or SMC. I use my neighboors 3Com and that worked. I decided to install my old 3Com Home Connect accesspoint and that one also worked. But the others do not. At this point it does not matter if I use encruption or not. Only the 3Com devices work. Does anybody hav another type of device that works?
Odyssey Access Client
I found this WPA/WPA2 client from Junipur http://download.juniper.net/software/aaa_802/public/oac/WM_Client_45/OdCeClientPPCSigned.ARMV4.CAB
If you have installed this install directly the following file and reset your device. ftp://xda:[email protected]/Uploads/Software/OdCl450CrOnlyFALLEN.cab
Now you will see that the Ameo will connect to the other accesspoints.
So you see there is a bug in the WIFI part of the radio rom!
No problem for me, i´m usung a netgear WG834GT for the moment.
Maybe my HTC X7500 Advantage has some other roms with the problems solved because it is swedish

I have no problem using the WIFI. I'm normally able to see about four if I'm at home. The other access points are my neighbours', some of which are secured while others are'nt. If I connect to any one of them they tend to drop off after a while due to week signals. Even if I use my own within the house, the signal is weak sometimes, in which case, the system automatically goes to UMTS connection which is far far faster in my case (Because my WIFI's bottlenect is from the slow ADSL speed of 512kbs download speed max, and my phone, running at UMTS, has higher speed.
So, check the signal strength and see if this is the cause.
Since my works all the time, may be by showing you my wifi configuation for comparison might help.
I'm using WEP data encription. The network key is entered on start>setting>connection>Wi-Fi. I would see all the hot spots there. After I selected my own WIFI, I select connecting to the internet and press NEXT. In the next screen I chose Open WEP and untick automatic box. I then enter the network key which I obtain from my router administration screen on my PC.
That's it. I hope you have your problem resolved soon
Thanks for the info, but this is not my problem. I can connect to whatever accespoint. Only my neighbours accespoint makes it possible to connect to te internet. When I connect to my own network my ZYXEL is giving me troubles because it is blocking traffic after 10 seconds. It doesnot matter if connect to it by WIFI or using my SMC bridge that is connected bij LAN. It doesnot matter if I use encryption or not. Strange enough when I use Odyssey Access Client I can connect to the internet. I have to say that this is not always the case. The signal in my home is more than 80% for both WIFI gateways. Every other device I use, an MDA PRO and a DELL X30, do not have troubles when they want to connect to the internet. So I conclude that the WIFI on my Ameo is not completely compliant. This could be my device, te rom or my gateways. I do not think my gateways are the problem. Both are from different manufacturers.
Seems to me that I have a similar problem...
I got my Ameo yesterday and installed W-Lan. I'm using WAP encription. I get a very weak signal and have a very slow Internet connection (like in the "good-old 54k modem days" ;-). Sometimes there is even no response from the internet. Then I have to close W-Lan in the connection manager and to restart W-Lan again.
Dieter
That is exactly my problem. It works at the beginning but after a few seconds it looks like the Ameo is in quicksand. There is no information from the internet anymore that reaches the Opera browser. I tried Odessey Access Client with better results, but it does not work all the time.
@dieterpapa
What type of accespoint do you have?
i´m using a linksys wrtg router + an additional linksys range expander to cover my house completely.
what i´ve seen, too is that using the ameo about 3 mtrs to the expander i only get minimum w-lan signal.
do we perhaps have a problem with the antenna ?
@qan: how is your signal strength?
dieter
I have the same problem. gets connected no problem. I can download files from my pc. But leave it a few seconds to look at a web page then the connection drops I have to reconnect at com manager. never happend with my mda.

I had the same problems while connecting the Ameo to a Freebox (special router for French DSL offering, http://adsl.free.fr/wifi/).
After installing the programmes you listed (and restarting several times) I could connect with the new WiFi tool. Now sometimes I have problems when the programme thinks WiFi is disabled but in fact it is not, but this is only temporary.
Thanks!
Found Problem!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have finaly found the problem. I am sure the problem is within the rom of the Ameo. The problem is caused by the auto scaling feature of the processor. When the WIFI connects to an encrypted accesspoint the WIFI connection is not setup correctly. To prove this I have installed Pocket Hack Master and disabled the build-in scaling. After this my Ameo connect without any problem to the accesspoint and internet. This works with every processor frequency from 104Mhz up to 728Mhz. Yes at 728Mhz the Ameo is blazing fast. You won't recognize your device. Also after activating the scaling feature of PHM it still works. After disabeling PHM the connection went dead again.
You have to deactivate the build-in scaling before you activate the WIFI connection.
Lets hope someone can patch the rom or that this problem is not available within WM6.
Gerald
And how to disable internal scaling ?

it's in the setting, disable internal scale
Thanks - found it in the hack master setting.
However my Ameo doesn't pass 728MHz - it hangs. Maximum is 663 MHz.

New Touch Diamond 2 Wifi Wont Connect

Hi Guys & Gals,
I have a brand new HTC Touch Diamond 2, on O2 network - this is an untouched device, all i have done is booted it up and sync'd it with my PC,
I have tried to connect the device to to wireless networks now with no luck.
1. My home connection - security enabled WPA-PSK password protected, The phone can see the network, i type in my network key - i also checked the password on my router setup. The little spinning circle comes up and try's to connect with no luck. It will then keep trying for as long as the wireless is on
2. Home connection again with no encription - again the same thing
3. Work connection WEP secured, type in the key, same thing again.
Has anyone encountered these sorts of problems before in the past - if so how do i fix it so i can connect wirelessly.
Cheers Guys
JdeRonde
Doubt if this is an issue with the phone more likely to be a setup of the wireless.
What router do you use?
Do you have MAC Filtering enabled?
Do you use your router as a DHCP server?
Are there any error messages displayed on the phone?
When it doesnt connect and you tap the notification area (top bar to the right of START) do you have any messages there?

I too had problems with WIFI. My home work network was visible but it would immediately drop or not be able to connect. A few days later it started working flawlessly and I have no idea what changed.
I am sure you have tried a soft reset but just in case...
Tony
I have a NetGear DG(Some Number) v4 ADSL wireless router, which i have set up and works for all of my other devices (ie. Laptops, PS3). With a simple encription key.
I get no messages etc, all it sais is that its 'not connected' and there are no new notificatons
It then persists in trying to connect again and again, when it cant connect for a while, it then comes up with 'new network connections found' in the notificatins area.
I have switched the power mode to best performance with no luck.
I have tried on 2 different networks now. including with all encription off. WEP and WPA-PSK - This is driving me nutz cuz i love the phone, i just want to use it to browse the web without paying out the nose for it.
DHCP server is dynamic from my ISP.
I have contacted HTC now about the issue, but im going to feel so stupid if it turns out to be somthing simple like a setting on the phone somewhere.
But thanks for the reply
Have you checked you arn't using MAC filtering?
Log-in to your router and check under Wireless settings > Wireless Station Access List.
While you are on your wireless setting page check what Encryption your using for WPA-PSK? TKIP? (The wrong encryption chosen will cause you not to be able to connect)
Ok maybe telling you how to suck eggs but on your phone:
Settings > Communication > Wifi
Select Advanced at the bottom right.
Select Change Network
Click Add new...
Type in the name of your network (The SSID also found under wireless settings, Case sensitive)
Select Connects to: The Internet
Leave the other two boxes unticked.
Click next.
Select the correct Authentication - WPA-PSK is different to WPA2-PSK. You will probably be using WPA-PSK.
Select the correct Encryption (Propably TKIP)
And type in your Network Key
Click Next and Finish.
How does this fair and what are the results of checking info on wireless setting page?
Im at work at the moment trying to connect to the WEP connection,
This connection most deffinatly does not have mac filtering on it, just asked the network tech.
Okies.....
Changed the network key to.... Shared key and it works
so i am guessing that it must be somthing to do with my setup at home..
Cheers guys
Cool.
Just match up the Authentication / Encryption / SSID and Network Key from the router to your phone setup and you should be fine.
HTC TD2 Wifi issues
Hi
There's some discussion around the web about this problem of encrypted wifi connectivity: a few things to note
1] the TD2 is _very_ sensitive to the power settings applied to the wifi chipset.
The default power saving settings are only likely to work if all other on-board devices - bluetooth, HSDPA, GPS [and maybe even the screen] are either off or in low power mode: the general recommendation seems to be that one adjusts the wifi device power to be "best performance" if one wants to guarantee connections.
2] several people have reported that both the wifi device [card] and the settings for the particular wifi lan [SSID] to which you are attempting to connect should both be configured for "Work" rather than "The Internet".
3] these secured/encrypted connection failures are not about the WiFi access point or router: I've personally tested with several different makes and models of Router and Access Point [3com, Cisco, Enterasys, Netgear, DLink, Belkin etc] - both on my own and on client networks where I have complete control of security, and have also methodically tested every single combination of TD2 setting for WEP and all variants of WPA. In each case my TD2 has failed to make a valid encrypted connection.
The same device will happily connect to "open" unencrypted access points and routers.
Other models of HTC device, such as the Tytyn II and Touch Pro work fine on the same access points and routers: so we can be pretty sure that this is specifically a TD2 issue.
Conversations with HTC's European Tech Support on this issue have not been helpful to date, but they HAVE pushed the issue further up the line, so there's a chance that we'll see a resolution.

WPA problem

Hi,
I have an HTC Elfin that has no problem connecting to a home network with WEP encryption. But at work, I cannot connect to the network with WPA-TKIP encryption. My phone just tries to connect for a few seconds and then the status of the access point goes back to "available". I've verified the network pass phrase, as it does work with my co-worker's netbook. What is the problem here?
BTW, I've been reading up on this problem and somebody mentioned the fix of turning on/off the wifi (turn on wifi, connect, turn off wifi and then on again), but it doesn't work for me:

Try to set wifi to best performance instead of best battery first.
Often the problem is also caused by a combination of the router (brand/type) and a Windows based device/computer.
Some things you can try to get a working connection with WPA-PSK enabled:
1. Modify the registry:
\HKLM\Comm\EAP\Extension\25\ValidateServerCert=dword:00000000
2. Modify the network settings:
Settings > Connections (tab) > Wi-Fi > Network Adapters (Tab)
and select "NE2000 Compatible Ethernet Driver" (maybe you have to config a static ip-address).
Thanks for the suggestions. I did all those, except for the static IP since our network admin doesn't provide one. It still doesn't work. One thing I'd like to understand is that in my case, why does the WPA-PSK connection work for the standard Windows environment (laptop/netbook, desktop) but not Windows Mobile? What could be the difference?
I don´t know what ROM are you using, but if it is some of 23XXX Builds, disconnect first the Bluetooth and then connect the Wireless... Should work now...
My ROM is MK_872_05 WWE, from chota_shivaji. It uses WM6.5 CE OS 5.2.21872. Thanks for your suggestion. I will try it out on Monday when I get back to work.
I disconnected the Bluetooth connection and tried again to the WPA-PSK encrypted access point at work and it still doesn't work. Just yesterday at a relative's place, I was able to connect to his router with WPA security. I think there's something different with the one at work which does not work with Winmo devices.
at work do u just have a password or a user/password? are u using certificates?
At work I have a guest username and password that I can use to log in for the WIFI access point. The password changes every week, but I confirmed that I used the latest one. But I don't think there's a certificate needed since my co-worker is able to use his home netbook to log in without anything else except the same username and password.
