Do you have your eyes shut? Yes, Hermes has a builtin GPS it can be activated but doesn't get a sat fix yet. No GPS funtionality officially anounced.
But what the heck... I'm obviously wasting my time since you can't read! This information is very easily findable.

Look, I don't mind telling new forums users to try a search, but you're just being a jerk.

Well said Motionmind. This board has been, for the most part, "flaming" free and welcoming to new members.
This board must not become one of those fora where people are afraid to post for fear of being flamed for showing a lack of knowledge.
Gentle guidance and a measure of humour help us all to get along together.
The point of the board is to help all, newbie and expert alike. Let's show we are mature by demonstrating a measure of patience.

Yea, sure. And that applies only to the seniors. IMHO using the search function is an expression of respectfulness of others and a clear sign of maturity.
I consider myself temperamental, at the utmost. Which is more or less reasonable since this great forum is flooded by noobs (no prob here), which rather start a new thread then looking just for a second to find that information (which is bad). This thread is proof of my argument - the GPS threads are very active atm.

Hi Chatty.
I agree with what you say - not searching is disrespectful and so is starting a new thread if one or more exist already but only if the person does this deliberately. However when I was new to forums I knew little about what I was doing - didn't even know there was a search facility. In fact I thought you just posted questions and got answers!!
So if I see that a person has a very low number of posts, I give them the benefit of the doubt and point them to what they should do next time - like search or write a sensible thread title or be more polite in asking for help etc etc etc.
Peace and Love Man - bring back the sixties
Cheers

Hi all,
First of all, am sorry that a simple question from me had brought so much non-related issues which I sincerely apologise to anyone who were offended or angered as
the result of such.
As to the issue of searching the forum, before I made the post, I have done a "GPS" keyword under the top menu Search Forum
- but results shows no matches. After which I have tried
the advance search a few times which did no show any result either.
I am not accusing this forum's search engine is not good.
But since the only search I use ocassionally is google
& yahoo, I am quite sure that I did not use this search function correctly to pin point to the topics I needs.
With the above I hope to end this mess which I had started and move on - life is too short for anger & war.
BTW I will continue to support and use this forum and
hopefully I manage to learn to use the search
function correctly by my next post.
If not, I hope for everyone's kind understanding.
Thanks for reading.

There's no need to feel sorry at all. You are most welcome here.
Anyway it's not your fault that you need at least 4 letters to make the search function work at all.
Also from time to time some of us just like to have a mump about something.

So I should do like you, call people names but not provide useful info.
Unlike you I pointed them in the right direction. A little correction never hurt anyone.
You see if you always just provide the same answer over and over again then you don't ever teach them how to find it for themself so they will never put in the effort. Also you end up with 278 threads about "My time is off" or the "Timezone is always wrong" which spread the discussion across numerous threads instead of concentrating it into a few threads.
BTW, just what is your idea of EDUCATE? To me it means to teach them how to find the answer not just hand them the answer without any effort on their part.
Once again, in your response to me you show what a jack ass you can be. Keep up the good work. You may just run all the newbies away from this forum and you can be the only one left.
If you are going to do your type of education, keep implying with your attitude that people are stupid because they do not know as much as you.

So, where did you help the OP? As stated already, I didn't just insult and run along as many have done in response to these types of posts.
I'll admit that some of the attempts at humor may miss the mark but if you read the forum regularily you'll notice that more often than not my "bite" is not so bad and I almost always point the OP in the right direction.
Mentoring is not "just handing over the answer" either. It too involves showing the work. Hence I usually suggest keywords to use in the search and often times have actually done the search using those keywords to ensure they will get the desired results.
Now, don't you have something better to do than villify me :?:
 all that bickering and you still didnt answer his question.
Just go in the phone options and uncheck the option to sync the timezones.
That option doesnt work good on our phones.....its on by default.

Not true, the point of my gentle nudge to surfnsmiles was to show them how to find the answer where it already existed so we don't end up with 632 threads answering the same question.
Since the OP didn't return I assume they found the answer in another thread.
I was raised to believe that if you give a person a fish you feed them today but if you teach them to fish you feed them forever.
All to often newbie come into (any) forum and asks a question like this (already asked and answered too many times) get s quick answer and so then they never look for the answer first. Then over the next week they will post 75 questions similiar (asked and answered, no research). Thus a gentle nudge showing that a little research yields much fruit is more productive than just answering outright.
I never intend to make anyone "feel stupid", I will apologize if sometime my humor is dry but we can't all bat 1000!
Heck I was a newbie once (a long time ago in a ... but I regress). I spent 2 weeks reading the forums and searching before my first post.

hello,
how would I go about setting up HTC Home to shortcut to PocketCM for SMS instead of the default wm6.1 SMS app?
I have dcd 2.3.2 installed. I still like the HTC Home plugin and it works very well for my needs, however it is a pain in the arse that the shortcut "notification" points to my old app. Not sure if I am explaining this correctly. On the HTC Home plugin, there is the Email notification, the SMS notification and the Missed Calls notification right under the clock. The middle "number" points to the SMS app, I want to change this to point to PocketCM. And yes I have the option unchecked in pocketcm to "use old application for sms".
Thanks.

This has been discussed countless times on this forum. Please use search at the top of this page. Try keywords "HTC SMS", "HTC HOME SMS" or any others you can think of. When you find the thread that best fits, and there are a few, post your question there please.

If I did that, then every time you need something you didn't want to spend more than a few moments looking for you would just simply start a new thread and ask a question. It would be your trained response. Thats not acceptable here. The answer is on this site. It may or may not be the one you want but I am not willing to give it to you. You must search for it. I know it exists because I searched for it.
Thanks

Father?!? Is that you...?!?
Try checking the links next time; even though the results don't specifically say "PocketCM SMS" or whatever in them, they are related. I searched "HTC HOME SMS" and the 3rd, 4th, and 5th results are all the same request that you have, except with different programs.
No harm done, though, now you know.

OK Curious G... now that you've gone against your own statements by perpetuating an extraneous thread. Yes I did just perouse some of your previous posts and I may add that early on you did have a few less than stellar posts of your own. Dont forget that we were all once noobs and needed a little guidance. If everyone that achieved Sr.Member status stopped answering arsenine questions then there would be no new development and we'd all still be using locked phones with only the junk the carriers put on them.
In any case getting back on toppic.
I do believe that the question was asked, if the SMS button on HTC Home could be redirected to use another application.
The short answer is NO it can not. It is hard coded into the signed DLL file. There is a thread where someone was attemting to HEX edit the DLL file to redirect the functions. They had minor success but nothing that would enable what you and many other are looking for. The other problem was that since the app is signed, altering it would break the signing and result in the app not functioning.
This concludes our special report.
We now return you to the previously scheduled flaming.

I told him in the second post that the answer may or may not be to his liking. I already new the answer was no. I didn't want him to have that answer here becuase he would and will just continue to post questions as he sees fit instead of being conditioned into deep searching first.
Ah.. I see. It was learned behavior. As a noob you were repeatedly instructed to search for your own answers and as such you propogate the cycle by disceminating the same attitudes toward other noobs.
I also see you contradict yourself within the same sentence by stating that you care nothing of the status indicators yet call out that I am still just a noob. While yes my post count is extreemly low and my join date is October of last year. I have in fact been coming to these forums for quite a long time and on average spend hours a day reading the posts. On average I rarely post and typically find my own answers. So while in title I am still classified as a noob I would in fact be nothing close to noobish.
With respect to "it is about the expectation of people to be their personal answering service in a hacking and development forum."
Definitions of forum:
a public meeting or assembly for open discussion
a public facility to meet for open discussion
I do believe that by expecting people to come here and answer their own questions that would completely undermine the definition of forum. As such this would mean that the devs should not share the information that they have gained and tell everyone to go find the answers themselves.
Some forum that would be. Post after post of go search for the answer.. Oh wait. No one ever shared the answer therfore there is nothing to search for.
Finally. If you already knew the answer, then would it have just not been simpler to post NO IT CAN NOT and have been done with this?
As for
"I didn't want him to have that answer here becuase he would and will just continue to post questions as he sees fit instead of being conditioned into deep searching first. "

Actually, they are are to make an honest attempt at answering their own questions. That is done by searching. In this Forum the developers post programs and support is provided by both they and other members who may be able to lend a helping hand on that topic in that thread. Others may lend a suggestion towards a development idea but only after it has been researched to confirm they are not double posting. As for the dictionary definition you have quoted; well, for here, your just plain wrong. Probably has to do with that fact that you are noob and haven't read the forum rules yourself. This forum has a clear policy stating a member of any calibur should detail search before they post.

None of the above. I'm an Integration Engineer for one of the leading global companies in component and systems manufacturing and distribution. My primary task is to write assembly/configuration documentation for hardware, software and various OS's for our production lines.
I basically get handed a pile of components with details on how a particular customer needs the system to function etc. I then build, configure and document it so that it can be reproduced hundreds or thousands of times without error.
Look for your answers before posting a new thread!
Click to be directed to the Question forum!
You must have spent a lot of time setting up this little tutorial. Nice work. The mouse following the dotted lines could be a little faster but good work. I hope the message gets through to most people.
Note: to all who use search and still find it difficult to find what you are looking for. Remember to try using a variety / combination of cue words related to what you are looking for as sometimes your first search does not bring you directly to what you are looking for. You may have to search using different words, you may have to examine several different threads that are brought up in the (results) in order to find what you are looking for. Example
if you are having WIFI connectivity problems you can search "WIFI" or "Touch WIFI" or "WIFI Problems" or "WIFI Connectivity" or "WIFI on Diamond" etc... Don't give up searching just because your first seach did not get you your answers. Chances are the answers are around somewhere. I have not yet had to start a single thread asking for help or for answers. Persistance does pay off and a lot of answers are already out there.
Yeah it's over 100 frames, I want to fix it up a bit, but I though I'd post it first to see if it was even worth it.

I agree, he deserves it. He spends his life in front of his computer making this website a better place for Win. Mobiles!
while you're at it..
change the Questions and Answers section's behavior.
people keep posting here because they want fast answers and don't want to wait until Tweakman posts their question there.
let the Questions and Answers section be flooded as much as people want.. as long as this section is clear.
and in my opinion, you should get a ****ing noble prize. I'm sick an tired of telling people to read the rules and use the search button. as if it's a damn project.

while you're at it..
change the Questions and Answers section's behavior.
people keep posting here because they want fast answers and don't want to wait until Tweakman posts their question there.
let the Questions and Answers section be flooded as much as people want.. as long as this section is clear.
and in my opinion, you should get a ****ing noble prize. I'm sick an tired of telling people to read the rules and use the search button. as if it's a damn project.

LOL ! Touche!
What kind of processor does the htc touch hd have?
Is it ARM/XSCALE?
if you had done a search under google, you would have found what you are looking for.
The cpu core is an ARM1136EJ-S
thanks
Thank you!

@adrsar
Why are you senior mebers in this Forum alsways so rude.
Every question is answered with look here look there ...
Why can´t you just answer and help the forum users ?
I read and write in many german and other world wide forums,
but here I alsways feel uncomfortable with the "sound"
a Forum is here to ask and discuss - searching is ok but I think answering is always also ok

My view is that, if you're lazy to help, you always have the option of ignoring the post and move on. It is not always easy, at least for some less experienced one, to get what appear to be an obvious answer. Further, one must recognise that this forum is very very very hugh in terms of number of posts to be read, and who in the world has the time to read all of them?
On the other hand, there are also people who DO enjoy helping out others, even if it is questions asked again and again. So, let these people do the answering.
What is important is for those seeking help to be nice and polite. As long as they do that, they do deserve a nice and polite response.
It is not productive IMO to pollute the thread by another "Go google yourself" type of post.
Just my 2 cents.

Point taken - appologies and slap wrist.
It does get a little annoying though when members ask the same question time and time again and its obvious that they have not done a search. In the last few weeks there have been numerous new posts asking about "why does my LED not light up beside the speaker" as an example. If members tried searching first, there would be less duplicate threads. A number of questions can be answered by reading the manual also.
I read the forum everyday, and its just getting like TV - full of repeats.
I will keep quiet from now on and appologies if i sounded harsh.

I agree that it is damn anoying when people just post without even a slight search, but the forum is developed as such that you simply don't answer or reply to the thread and it will slide down the list until it is never seen again.
I love this forum but it does seem there are an awful lot of self improtant people here. We are meant to be a community to help each other. Saying that my 2yr daughter could have probably found out what processor the HDs got but its still no reason to be rude, so if you don't like the thread/post simply ignore it?
I tried searching google for the processor type, but could only find Qualcomm® MSM 7201A™ 528 MHz. for me this doesnt say what type it is!
I always search this forum for anserws before I ask.
some software only say it is for ARM/XSCALE processor, and I dont know what that means? how can I see that Qualcomm have a ARM1136EJ-S core?
Maybe I dont know much about processor, but this I dont think it is comman knowlage.?
But hey, now I know so I am happy!!
The majority of WM6 software is written for the ARM/Xscale and will work fine. However be careful of the apps that under/overclock your processor - such as Pocket Hack Master as even though the software is written for ARM Processors, the Qualcomm device is not supported. Many software developers offier free trial versions - I strongly recommend you give them a go before you part with your money.
We've got a lot of new users appear on here lately, it looks like in search of updated roms for the x1.
PLEASE IF YOU ARE NEW TO THIS THEN DO NOT FLASH A ROM
without
A) reading
B) reading some more
C) reading even more!
All the roms should come through the SE Update Service, please use that as it is a simpler method and if something goes wrong, then you can go to SE to complain..
Please use the search if you have a problem, if you don't find what you want the first time, then search again, maybe try searching around the subject.
There's a very very good chance that the question has already been answered several times!
If you can't find the answer then flick through the older pages on the thread, if it's something to do with the operation of the X1 then there's a good chance it's in the oldest pages of the forum.
Experienced members get upset by people starting new threads with the same moans or questions because it really clogs up the great search system with all manner of wasted threads. If there's an existing thread than use that please! If the questions already been asked don't ask it again!
This forum is not a SE support forum, no-one (that will admit to it anyway) is from SE so if you have issues with them why not raise it with them?
If you want to know how you X1 does various stuff try one of the operators online guides.
If you flash a custom rom or another rom obtained from here, despite being warned not too. DO NOT go running off to MS or SE complaining that it's all gone wrong, they
A) won't likely listen
B)won't like us very much
Ta.
You should keep this on the very first ROMS subforum page fards
I know It's already written everywhere... old problem... but many people falls in parachute here, landing directly inside the ROMs post from external links. XDA DEVS is da bomb
And no newbies seem to read anything but exclusively what they are looking for

Hmmm...a rather sweeping generalisation methinks...
I'm a noob here, I'll admit that. However, I'm a board Admin elsewhere in cyberspace so I know exactly where you're coming from. I've done my time reading, understanding, occasionally asking relevant questions in the relevant places, and trying to help out where I might have some answers.
Your advice is spot on, and anyone who is inexperienced should tread slowly and carefully. There is all the time in the world to learn how to get it right, but it takes very little time to totally stuff things up.
"Use the search, Luke"
Instead of telling new guys to read, you could've put the same effort into and making a nice thread for them instead.
Maybe a list on where to start reading and so on!
This thread has no meaning whatsoever. New guys will probably just read first lines skip it and ask a question.
And remember we have all been there, not knowing how to flash etc.
Also searching can be a very time consuming thing to do, and asking and getting an answer is often way faster.
this thread doesnt make sense without any links to where to read...
This forum is where you read. it is a development forum, not a help forum!
you read the first thread that the moderators try to get EVERY NEW USER to read, this was a gentle reminder to get people to do just that.
People are not here to act as customer service for people who are too lazy to use the search facility on this site.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=681487&postcount=1
try that and the one below for starters.

A perfect example of not reading. The purpose of this thread is not to reference, it's to inform.

Searching is quite time consuming but you have no idea what kind of information is in this treasure chest. U accidentally stumble on to some great stuff.

and unfortunately it gets harder the more threads we get asking exactly the same thing over and over again.. ;P
Yea that is true. I was searching PIE6 and i ran across about 13-14 threads of the same question. i was on like page 3 or 4 of the search before i got the right hit.
maybe xda-newbies.com should be registered as a none development and referance site? lol

which reminds me the pie8 files that sun_dream posted in his BA 6.5 thread work, when copied over on itjes 6.5 (it's still pie6 core I think. but a bit snappier).
How about a period of not being able to post when registering ?, a day or three would give new members with their questions a little time to cool down and search/read for the answers which will usually be found here somewhere.
Just an idea.

I actually think that's not a bad idea, was just suggesting it to a couple of other members. Only drawback I think is that it couldn't be restricted to one sub forum such as the x1 from my experiences with vbulletin..
So it would restrict some of the truly amazing first posts that have come from some of the great genii?? on this site..
Alternatively we could have another Sub-forum, in the X1, with for newbies to ask the same questions of each other (like a creche) and anyone found straying outside of that forum until they've learnt to search and read would get electrocuted.. or something..
you mean, something like asking a question about an advanced feature, if you have it right then you're allowed to the real forums?
Well to be honest, the only thing a noob should read are the stickies. I learned to flash, edit, modify, type, behave, proof read, error correction, ask nicely, say please thank you cookie i love you, by reading those stickies.
Actually I think it's a good idea to have a sub-forum for the newbies, and then bomb them with the 'READ THE F-WORD STICKIES OR DIE' *going too far here...
Search ?? No thanks

Maybe he's right: xda-devs should delete the "search" box and google is a freaking waste of time
And yes: I received two or three "search and read!!" replies to my very first posts too... Human nature...

But to search efficient you have to know what to search for, the keywords are important in a search engine. And when you're a newbie those terms might not be known to you. Or you might not understand a lot of them.
And beeing sarcastic about my comment is not helping anyone that is just pure immature.

Lets face it. Most people that come here with questions like "how can I flash my ROM?" just didn't bother to look. And trust me, there's plenty.
The bothersome thing is not that people ask questions, that's normal in a developer environment. What does bother me, and most - if not all - others is that they ask questions they can answer themselves by putting just a wee bit of time into it. Instead, they had rather have other people spend time doing everything for them. I can see where this attitude comes from - it's easier, but you get my point.

If people manage to use a search engine to find this site then they can manage to use a search engine to find the answers to their questions.
Not knowing or being too lazy to be independent enough to search is the real immaturity.
