ActiveSync on Vista - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam General

I have a couple of games that keeps my GF busy that I'm trying to install on my TyTn that install through ActiveSync.
I'm running Windows Vista on two out of my three machines, and now most PPC tasks are handled through WMDC, which doesn't seem to allow for software installation.
I believe ActiveSync is supposedly a thing of the past in Vista, but is there any way I can get these apps installed without installing ActiveSync on my other XP machine and going through that whole process?

This is the release version of Windows Mobile Device Center 6 for Windows Vista.
It has all functions of ActiveSync, and allows for software install.

reinstalling Activesync

hi everyone,
just a quick question. i am going to format my PC and try installing Vista. I am home for the holidays and left my Activesync CD at school so i wont be able to get it for 3 weeks.
the question is:
is there a way i can retreive my cd key from the registry or anything so i can reinstall activesync on vista?
thanks everyone
If you are wanting to use vista, well you will not need it, as it comes with vista, it is a new one and you can not run the old ones with vista!

The key is application licence (wm5), activesync is a free download from ms for windows, the new release vista is built in.
I just tried to sync my MDA to Vista, and got the following error message:
Previous versions of ActiveSync cannot be installed on Windows Vista. The features previously found in ActiveSync are now available in Windows Device Center. Connect your Windows Mobile powered device to the PC to get the Windows Mobile Device Center from Windows Update.
So I went to Microsoft, entered the Windows Mobile Device Cenet as a search, it took me a new page all about Vista and ActiveSync. I downloaded the beta, it installed and work great! Very nice interface, all tools on one page. I'm a happy camper!

Last week I tried to upgrade to WM6 using vista. Shortly after erasing the ROM it crashed and would not connect. I started the upgrade, as it would not sync with Outlook 2007. Something to do with Task.
I’m not sure that the following was what cured it. I added a task on the XDA, and it successfully synced.
However following the crash, I could not connect to the upgrading program. I kept getting a 101 connection error.
Unfortunately the only way I got it to work was by using my other PC with XP on it, and then going back to Vista. Now its great, and back on the road.
i have the same problem, but on my home i have win xp and no problem, but on work i have a pc wiht vista and i can´t downgrade to xp. i must work on vista
i am thinking about upgrade the pocket to wm6 but i am reading some webs and everybody has the same problem with wm6 !!
im using wm6 and its OK
u have to upgrade WMDC to the latest version..it works perfectly with me

I installed Vista on a second partition and kept XP on another partition. That way I could keep my documents and the like on the XP partition and access them from either XP or VISTA. Benefits included keeping the one set of e-mail folders and content as I migrated various programs (such as PocoMail) across to Vista. And yes, they all work—and faster than my now bloated XP could handle things. I am using a 2002 ASUS A7V8X Mobo but every other component was new in 2007-08.
All went well, including synchronising my O2 XDAII Pocket PC (PPC) running SIN’s famous version of Windows Mobile 2003 SE—ROM version 2.06.00WE. I used Windows Mobile Device Centre and successfully and synced Calendar, Contacts and the like with Outlook 2007. After a couple of weeks, the PPC would no longer sync ... connect via USB, yes ... but WMDC 6.1 turned into Windows Mass Data Corruption.
Well, I tried the usual tricks that others have put forward like rolling back to WMDC 6.0, as Neville Lang suggested in the following extract wherein he:
 Uninstalled the two Windows Mobile Device Center 6.1 items from the
Control Panel > Programs and Features list
 Manually deleted the contents of the C:\Windows\WindowsMobile folder.
Initially I could not delete some DLLs but once the two "Windows Mobile
device connectivity" services were stopped from the Task Manager, I was able
to delete the rest of the files in the WindowsMobile folder, except for the
en-US folder containing the *.MUI files. I could not delete them and so
decided to leave them.
 Using Regedit, deleted all entries from the following two keys that
related to my two devices:
* HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows CE Services\Partners
* HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows Portable Devices\Devices (He left
in the entry for my memory card)
 Using Windows Explorer, deleted all files in the following folder:
* C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\ActiveSync\Profiles
 With his two Pocket PCs disconnected, tapped on Start > Programs >
ActiveSync > Menu > Options, highlighted the Windows PC and tapped on and
the Delete button. Both of the PPCs had two entries in here so there could
have been some confusion on the desktop at some point, so he deleted both of
them. They do not sync with any other computer.
 Rebooted (Restarted) the Windows Vista computer
 Reinstalled WMDC 6.0 from the Microsoft Download website.
 Recreated the two relationships from the two devices, and they each did
the initial long sync
 He then tested each device that it could perform a sync not long after it
was reconnected, and they both now sync perfectly. He also tested that making
any changes to some contact details in Outlook 2007 would update
But this didn’t work for me. Nor did opening specific ports in the firewall (e.g., WMDC--port 990). So I went back to WMDC 6.1 and thought about the matter. It seemed that I had done two things that might have had an effect
1) On the PC installed a VPN to a mapped drive on a work server; and
2) On the PC installed a cable line speed monitor (TCP/IQ) because I never believe the promises made by my ISP about the speed I get.
I uninstalled the line speed monitor and made sure I never connected to the VPN when trying to sync the PPC. I use SunnySoft’s BackUp Manager and so I restored a complete version of the PPC’s system and files from a few months earlier. Next I restored the current calendar etc. from the XP sync with Outlook 2003.
Next came the connect via USB with success and no more problems. I have concluded that while I think I know what went wrong, the PPC was also suffering from the aborted WMDC sync efforts. There is no way around having full backups and being able to take a few steps back to a time when all was well.
Life is good again ... for a while ....

How to remove activesync 4.5 from Windows Vista?

Hi!
I had activesync 4.5 installed in XP and I updated my windows to vista recently. The problem is when I turn on my computer or connect my ppc to the computer, activesync 4.5 pop up and try to install itself, and then it said program can not be installed. Anyone knows how to remove activesync 4.5 from my machine or at least disable it.
Thanks a lot!
mmh, as far as i know there is NO "active sync" on vista and you cant "update" xp to vista. vista uses "windows mobile device center" so search and download this. install it before connecting your ppc.

Thanks for your quick response! Anyway, I do have moblile center 6.1 installed and it works perfect with my kaiser. The problem is activesync 4.5 keep poping up all the time when my kaiser connecting to my PC, or my PC is turned on. It won't go away even after I deleted the whole directory of activesync 4.5.
I too upgraded XP to Vista.
I don't have the issue with it popping up all the time; hell WMDC 6.1 doesn't pop up and I have to manually launch it, and it sets off UAC (which I have to have turned on so that the Live Mesh CLient will run.....the sooner that gets fixed the better!)
I can seen active sync 4.5 in my Add/Remove Programmes list but cannot uninstall it from them.
I guess I should have listened to advice and done a fresh install with my copy of Vista rather than the upgrade option! Do't have any of these problems on my laptop which came preinstalled with Vista (except for having to keep UAC on but that's a Mesh issue).
I've been checking microsoft website, and there are some other people have same problem, but with no solution even from microsoft, looks the only way to get ride of it is re-install a clean vista, but that's too much work to do!
YOU GUYS updated from xp to vista ??
BAD IDEA, didnt know that this is possible, but you SHOULD always start with a clean and new system if you install a new windows version.
So this is definitly the problem. ANd only one solution
Try this press start and type msconfig in the search then press enter
should pop up systemconfig then go to start tab and look for wcescomm and uncheck it.
restart pc and now Activesync should be gone or at leased not popup

Should you be able to sync to more then one.....

I am having issues syncing my niki to my desktop. I have been able to sync to my laptop which is running 32 bit Vista Ultimate, but whenever I try and sync it to my desktop running 64 bit Vista Ultimate I get the error saying I need activesync 4.5 or newer to complete the sync. Both machines are up todate as far as updates and both have windows mobile device center installed.????

Syncing Vista, XP & Touch HD

Good Afternoon to all,
Quick background info. I have a Touch HD successfully syncing with Windows XP SP2 & ActiveSync in my office, and also Vista Ultimate 64bit SP1 with mobile device manager (or whatever the inbuilt version is called ) at home.
The sync between all three works flawlessly and more than happy with it and have always got access to a working up to date calendar.
However there is one difference, when my phone is sat in its cradle connected via USB to my home PC (vista) it will sync but also allow data connection so, although not really required, it will continue to check for emails, update stocks etc etc. When I am in my office (XP) and try and use anything with regards to connecting to a data connection as listed above, it will not, displaying unable to connect on the weather/stocks tab, or just error in emails.
Any ideas how I can get the XP machine to do what I get with the vista machine? the only way i am working around it at the moment is on the XP machine unticking allow USB connections, removing and re-connecting phone and then it does not connect to ActiveSync and allows a data connection. This works but not the greatest way to do things as have to remember to do the reverse to sync it back again.
Sorry to go on for a bit but wanted to get in as much info as possible in the hope someone may be able to help with my dilemma.
Regards
Jody
Hi Jody,
Is your ActiveSync (on Windows XP) the latest available version ?
Have you checked that all settings are the same on both computers ? (well, as Active Sync is different from Mobile Device Manager, some settings are not called the same).
As a side note, how did you manage to sync your HD with Vista 64 ?
There are so much people complaining it doesn't work.
Did you use the standard v6.0 version "Windows Mobile Device Manager" that is already available in Vista, or did you upgrade to v6.1 ?
Cheers.
When it's synced at home, your Touch HD is using your computers internet connection to update stocks, weather e-mails etc.
When it's synced at work, your device is trying to use your work's internet connection, and failing. Your employer is more than likely not allowing the internet traffic. Do you know if you use a proxy server to connect to the web at work? Do you have unrestricted internet access or is there a firewall?
I do not know enough about how Activesync passes your internet connection to your device. Perhaps someone else knows whether or not this traffic is port 80 and whether or not Activesync automatically uses Internet Explorer's proxy settings, as it is not a global OS thing. Your mail will be pop3 or imap, which are not port 80, in which case the connection to your mail server may be blocked by your employer.
phonatrep - I sync my Touch HD with Vista Home Professional x64 fine straight out of the box, although I think I downloaded the latest WMDC from Microsoft because it does not come bundled with Vista AFAIK.
All the settings are correct, however we do have a rather strict internet firewall running through a proxy. Although I have unrestricted internet access, webmail access is blocked across the board, I am wondering if this is whats stopping me getting emails etc. As an interesting addition, the weather and stocks will update, just cannot use internet or receive emails.
As for syncing with Vista, I have Vista Ultimate 64bit and downloaded the device manager from the microsoft site as didnt find it as part of the original OS. As far as I remember did not hit any problems, other than me pressing wrong thing on the phone and syncing a complete delete of all contacts... oops! has worked perfectly ever since.

Could you please tell me if you use the device manager v6.0 or v6.1 ?
It seems that's part of the trick to make it work.

Same question, WMDC v6.0 or v6.1 ?
That would be very kind of you, sorry to bother you with that stuff
Thanks !
Anybody ?
That would really help me to know if that's WMDC 6.0 or 6.1 that really works for you on Vista 64 bit.
Thanks !
Am at work at the moment but will have a look tonight for you and let you know.

Just wanted to give some feedback too. I am also syncing with Vista x64 and XP x86 without any problems. I checked and am using the WMDC 6.0 on Vista, never had any problems since the very beginning.

Thanks for the feedback !
That's strange I hear a lot of people using WMDC 6.0, which is the one included as factory default in Vista.
There is a 6.1 version that allows to use Windows Mobile 6.1, so I will need WMDC 6.1, but I haven't found anyone using WMDC 6.1 with Vista 64.
I have spent a lot of time searching all forums I know.
I still haven't found anyone successfully using WMDC 6.1 with Vista 64 bit.
(it seems everybody use v6.0)
Is there someone here that uses WMDC 6.1 in Vista 64 bit ?
Thanks !
Ok, I now have WMDC 6.1 installed on Vista 64 bit.
I can sync my HTC Touch HD without any problem.
Please note that I followed this procedure :
-Boot as administrator.
-Install Outlook 2007.
-Reboot as administrator.
-Install Outlook 2007 Service Pack 1.
-Reboot as administrator.
-Install WMDC 6.1 (without the phone connected)
-Reboot as your standard user login.
-Connect the phone to the computer, using the USB cable.
Please note that Microsoft documentations are not consistent about whether or not you need to connect your phone "before" or "after" you install WMDC 6.1.
On some documentations Microsoft says "before", on others Microsoft says "after".
Well, I choose to connect my phone "after" WMDC 6.1 was installed and computer rebooted, and it worked.
Maybe people had problems because when they connect their phone, the default Vista WMDC 6.0 installs a driver for it, then WMDC 6.1 comes and have trouble replacing that driver by the new one.
