Could I install blackberry on Extended ROM? - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro General

Hi everybody,
could I install blackberry on extended ROM?
does anybody tried to install any application
on extended rom or ext.rom is usable only
for storing cab files in case of hard reset?
I have 8 MB free, so I am thinking to release
some main memory.
thanx

hey, nobody knows?? pls, does anybody install anything
on Extended rom??

Yes you can
Hi there,
I have been using the Uni for some time successfully without much problems. You can install the blackberry (BB) service on the Ext Rom but if you get a lot of messages with attachments etc. then the memory space in the ExtRom being just 9.9 MB would get filled up soon. I use both the BB RIM and BBES services on 2 different phones a XDA Exec and a T-mobile MDA Pro. One in India with Bharti Cellular as Service Provider (BB-RIM) and one in UK with T-mobile as service provider(BB-BES) service. It works fine for me. Wish there was a way to change the default storage folder for the BB mails. Don't install it on the SD card cause the moment the phone switches off the SD card is switched off too and the BB service will go off too. The only option is to install it in the main storage memory or if you have an unlocked ExtRom then there .
Also if you hard reset then the apps will stop working cause on hard reset the registry is cleared of installs other than the windows installs. You will have to re-install BB if you do a hard reset.
Ciao

thx on answer,
I know that is bad to install on sd card because if you turn off
device, sd card is turned off too.
I didn't know that extended rom is always on.

some rom questions

pls help me with some of my questions
i just upgraded my xda2 mini with a qtek 1.11.00wwe rom then i restored my device after the upgrade.
now for the question: if i hard reset my device will i still have the o2 stuffs or qtek stuffs???
then, if i had qtek stuffs, will i be able to remove them and put the o2 apps back????
thanks for any reply
I dont think the qtek rom will install on the mini unless extract update file and perform a few modificatins, however once you have done the update the device will have the qtek apps, if you want to have th o2 customisation you will need to perform a hard reset with the o2 ROM and then do a soft reset just after you have done the screen alignment. Next in file explorer just go to the extended ROM and make a copy of these files on your SD / pc, and once the qtek update is installed you can then readd those customisation files from the extended rom

thanks for the reply
damn, i have already done the upgrade. now i am left without a internet setting for my carrier.
who is your carrier? I am sure we could find a cab file for them.

Ok Total commander gives you access to the extended rom using the method just posted above.
But if you want to actually have the extended rom showing all time, then you need this...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=33680&highlight=extended+rom
The extended rom unlocker will give the actual extended rom as space deginated extended_rom2 and its about 9.85mb size or something with between about 350kb and 2.5mb of .cab files in it depending on whether its a Qtek (Which has the least amount of files), I-mate, o2 or T-Mobile, these last two probably (along with Orange) will have the most 'junk in them.
Once you have ran the exteneded rom unlocker and soft reset your device it will be accesible through file explorer you won't need TC.
You can then go in and delete (be careful to make sure what everything does first) its your own responsibility, and remove what you don't need.
For example on the I-mate Extended Rom you cane remove Backgammon, Skype and the anti virus prog. There wasn't much on the Qtek Rom I just put on mine just clearvue and soemthing else inconsequential, there was no skype or antivirus, but I believe some Qtek roms might have this.
T-Mobile is abother story, there is a shedload of crap in the extended rom, ranging from a today screen toolbar to small progs, there is list knocking about of what each file does. When I changed from T-Mob to I-mate and then Qtek I just transferred the T-Mobile GPRS settings and the GPRS disconnect button .cab and put them in the exteneded Rom myself and let it run.
Also on I-mate Rom there are carrier settings that you can delete which won't apply to you, basically lots fo countries phone settings, like o2 UK, T-Mobile Spain etc etc, depending on where you are in the world.
You can't delete the I-mate .tsk todayscreens as far as I know, they are not in the ExtRom. The Qtek ExtROm doesn't have the extra .tsk's just default and the Guava Bubbles one.
If anyone wants the T-Mobile GPRS .cab and GPRS disconnect button .cab I can send it through msn or email.
that doesn't work either. I treid with the unlocker and deleted the files with TC. If i check the content no files are there, but when i try to copy other files to the ext. Rom it says that the volume is write protected. I softreseted several times also.
Any hint on that ? How have all the others deleted the files in extended rom ?

Click to collapse
Might not work for you but it worked for me and a load of others. Once the extended rom is visible you can delete files easily, you don't need TC like I said. Its easier to put additional cabs into my documents sync them across and just run them.
Yeah, that's a pitty.... I have the Vodafone VPA Compact II, which is the Wizard 100 afaik.
Someone around here has the same model and succeeded in removing the cabs from the extended rom ?

Big Hack help required

I did the Big Hack successfully and gained 27 mb of space on my O2 mini (I was a happy man). Prior to this, at the time of Big Hack I stored a copy of my original rom and my extended rom.
Subsequently, in about 2 weeks time I accidentally deleted some key files while using SK Tools. Due to this the ‘close button’ at the top corner was not visible even after soft reset. The “running programs” application was also missing. Because of this I did a hard reset.
When I tried to load programs into the new storage gained, I found that the storage area is full (total storage memory 26.72 MB, free 0.00 MB. No programs are being written on to this area. I did another hard reset. Still no luck. My active sync is working fine with contacts, calendar etc. getting synced very fine. Only, I cannot install programs to my new big storage area as it shows the full area as full.
Total Main Memory is - 57.41
Storage Program
Allocated 24.39 MB Allocated 33.02 MB
In use 2.08 MB In use 10.63 MB
Free 22.31MB Free 22.39 MB
Please help me. What should I do ? Do I need to visit the Service Centre in Mumbai and ask them to restore my device back to the level at which I purchased it ? Do I flash the BIG ROM once again ? Do I flash the saved, original RoM. Somehow, when I try to flash in boot loader, the screen only shows “Serial 1.0”, but it is not prompting me to Press power to flash.
sorry, im not to good wid my magician, how do i do a big hack, and what does it do?
Galahad: I would suggest re-flashing with your bigstorage'd ROM. That should re-partition everything hopefully back to bigstorage status. If that doesn't work, reflash with a normal rom, and then start from scratch.
Mark - I presume by "Big Hack" Galahad means the BigStorage hack, and not just playing with his dangly bits. Have a look on the wiki and various threads. Olt's guide here is a good one:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=37914&highlight=bigstorage
and this is my preferred technique:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/vie...t=0&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=bigrom
What this does is:
by default the Magician is set up to have a "storage" area for user use of about 7mb, and an "extended" area that we can really use, containing a bunch of operator stuff that you might or might not need.
The hack turns the extended area into storage, so you get 27mb, to do with as you please. It's well worth doing if you use a wifi card for example, but if you have a large sd card anyway, and never remove it, you're not losing much.

Vijay thanks for your reply and notes. I have visited your links and taken hard copies for Note reference.
I did a romupdate and thru that I tricked my device to prompt me to flash my SD Card with the saved Big Rom. Once everything was done I got my 27mb space. I notes that it already had 5 mb written. I ignored that and went on to reinstall all my programs to this area.
One more help that I need [don'nt know if I should start a new thread] is how to get to install the application "O2 connect". I installed individual cab files from the saved EXT ROM. After installing 4 to 5 O2 connect cab files whenever I click on O2 connect I still get the message "O2 connect can only run on O2 devices"
The links that you gave me "how do I search for these links"? I do not get the search results for what I want to search in the search dialog box.
Galahad: it's not a piece of software I've ever used, but you have to remember to search for the cracked version. Have you tried the ftp? It's likely to be on there. However, many people seem to suggest it's not very good... I reserve judgement!
Remember to formulate your searches with correct boolean terms etc, it does work if you know what you're looking for and are very careful...

These are the files i used to get the o2 connect to work.
Thanks buddies for the replies and the tips.
Nash: I read your post. Did you mean to put a link for me to look up the files that you talked about ? Cause I don't see any files. Maybe I am missing something :?
Buddy these are CAB files in a RaR zipped
Tried using the individual cab files in the RAR file. Installed the same. It did not help me one bit. Got the same error "O2 connect is meant to work with O2 devices only"
I guess if I need the latest ROM I will pickup the same from the XDA forum.

Any Tips for Hard Reset? And I've loads of questions :( too

Hi all.
Have been using an imate Jam 64MB version with rom 1.12.00 wwe for about a year now. My phone once I had it setup has been running like a dream. Now I feel I the need to start again. So I have a few questions and if you have any tips I'd most appreciate them.
Big Storage Questions.
I did the big rom storage hack, unfortunately the only sd card I had when I did it was a 1GB card so it took up the full space of the card, took ages to transfer that via usb !
Can you tell me if I hard reset will I have to do the big storage hack again?
Has anyone come up with an automated way of doing this? I have foung OLTP's guide.
Also on the ftp site there are roms v1.13 but these aren't on the club-imate site. So what gives?
Progs installed both on pc and jam.
As we've all experienced some progs insist on installing on pc first then ppc. If I wipe the jam when I reinstall these progs will I get any errors as they're already installed on the pc? I intend to reinstall XP on my pc later on (am starting out small first ppc now pc much later) so yet again will I have to reinstall these progs on my pc?
Registry.
Is there any way I can set up all my registry hacks in to one file so I just have to install that rather than do each individual one?
Do you have any other tips to make this go smoothly? Am I forgetting anything or am I getting antzy over nothing?
many thanks folks
harry
ps sorry if I'm asking stuff that's real basic, been so long since I did anything to the phone that I feel a born again noob.

XDA ll loses apps when battery goes flat

I have been given an 02 XDA ll at work to carry out some decent homes surveys .
The special software for the surveys has been installed but every time the battery is allowed to go flat the XDA re-installs windows and various apps on restart but loses the special survey software . This has to be re-installed which takes about a week to organise (Council)
Shouldn't all software the OS and apps be installed on non volatile memory ?
Can someone explain what the root structure is in these things and where software should be installed to please.
It has a external 1Gb memory . I can transfer the survey data and photos etc to that for safety . Couldn't we install and run the survey software from the memory card also?
xdaII's with wm2003 have all apps in normal mem and they will be lost if the batt goes belly up
with wm5 wm6 wm6.1 one get some flash storage and programs installed there and on the sdcard will make it passed a flat battery
but since the storage is limited in size
people use ramdisks which use normal mem as a disk
and that too can be cleared at flatbatt
thanks for your quick reply.
If all the apps are stored in non volatile memory where do they get restored from when the batt goes flat ? they must be stored somewhere in non volatile for restore purposes.?
Don't understand this at all.
If the XDA can store the OS and apps somewhere shouldn't my employers install the special app in the same place so that it doesn't get lost when the batt goes flat?
Can the firmware be updated on these ? if so what difference would it make
Thanks for any help
the os itself is located in flash and stay there unless it's flashed with another rom
on WM2003 many htc devices have a list of install cabs in what they call extented rom which are auto executed after a hardreset or 100% flat batt
one can open the extented rom and add install cab's oneself but the space in limited so it may require other of the auto install apps are removed
with wm5 and later it's the exntented rom which is used as normal data storage
so it's not really present there
yes the firmware/rom / os can be changed as i state when i describe the diff between 2003 and wm5 or 6 or 6.1
how one goes about that you can read in the wiki
or in the rom from the wm5 or wm6 sub forums you download they include a txt file
describing step by step what to do
thanks Rudegar
I have found a good explanation of the different types of memory in these pocket PC devices Here
If our IT remove redundant OS files and some of the unwanted apps in the flash memory there might be room to install the special survey software (Anite)into the flash memory instead of into Ram that way we wouldn't lose the damn app every time the batteries go flat ?
Alternatively would it be possible to install and run the Anite app onto the SD card ? that way it would be safe and easier to re-install from and PC
Are the OS upgrades WM5 and WM6 available free to download or do they require a license like Winxp etc?
the roms wm5 and wm6 is not sold by ms they only provide them to the pda makers
so you cant get hold of them that way but if you go to the subforums for himalaya wm5 and wm6 you can find plenty of versions for free
thank you for your helpful advice. Much appreciated
help me please
my XDA II is shuting down after I remove my charger from it... so the last option to use it is by not removing it from being charged... but when the battery meter reacher 100% it automatically reboot and my OS need ro reinstall...
my question are:
1: why does my XDA had that problem?
2: how can i trouble shoot it?
3: what is the best way to fix it? 100% sure...
please help me with this problem...
thanks...
please.. email your answers here..
[email protected]
thanks a lot..
Sounds very much like the battery has expired and is not holding a charge. Do you have a spare battery you could test with?
