I am trying to setup my o2 exec to send and receive email from my work.
I have to dial in to a modem using a user id and password. I then have to use a 2nd id and password to access the email. Has anyone got any tips on how to do this? I have all the settings and can get a pc with modem to work ok.
I have tried to setup a modem using the settings I have, and I have tried to setup an email account to use the modem but I keep getting no modem on this connection. If I dial the connection number on a landline I can here the modem connection.
Any help would be appreciated. Fast running out of Nurofen Plus

Are the modem connected to your PC or it's a wireless modem and connected to your PPC?

First of all, you should be able for accessing internet from your ppc through activesync or wireless connection.
Now, create a new pop3 account in ppc. Follow the steps:
1. enter the email address
2. your name, email user id (i.e. [email protected]), password and tick on save password.
3. account type (i.e. pop3).
4. server address (i.e. in = pop.gmail.com, out = smtp.gmail.com).
5. click on options. select the connection to be used.
6. click on next. uncheck incomming ssl authentication (in case of gmail), check outgoing authentication (in case of gmail) and uncheck use separate settings.
7. finish and close messaging client.
8. open the messaging client and click on send receive.
Hope it will help. You may also do a softreset after the configuration.

I need to be able to connect via the dial-up modem at work and my exda on the move using the in built phone.
I need to dial into the modem from my xda to the work modem. make a connection using user id and password.
When the connection is established I then need to use a second id and password to get to my email store.
I won't have a pc connection during any of this.

Let's try to split a problem into 2 parts.
1) Establish a connection using your GSM connection (without GPRS) = "dial-into" your work server.
2) Check your mail.
So, for 1)
you need your XDA to recognise ISP/Work mode properly first.
By default Work mode is for addresses that are either without dots (e.g. server1), or those found on exception list (e.g. intra.company.com/*), otherwise ISP mode is used.
In Settings > Connections, under Connections, there's Advanced tab where you can find Exceptions list. Add your company intranet mask to it.
Then under same Settings/Connections/Connections, go to Tasks tab, Configure your ISP for normal GPRS, so you're still able to browse Internet via GPRS. But configure your WORK connection using modem! Enter name and select for a modem "Cellular Line" AND NOT "Cellular Line (GPRS, 3G)" or others. It will ask you for number to be dialed to work server. Best if you put it in international format. Then enter usename, password and domain on the next screen - and Advanced will give you more options like "Software Compression" or "IP Header Compression".
On Advanced tab select Dialing Rules... button if you have different rules of dialing to work depending on where you are. This would only be needed if your charges for local phone call are different from national number.
Now any attempt to get some data from server1 or server1.intra.company.com will automatically connect you to WORK via your chosen way - that is just modem. If you have modem and VPN, modem takes precedence.
2) Configure your mail client as usual. Be sure that your mailserver name falls into "Work" category: either just Netbios name or DNS name which responds to Exceptions list. Attempt to Send/Receive should refer to this server which in turn should cause dialing via normal modem and not GPRS with automatic username/password provision.

Make sure both wifi adapters are ON (both PC and PDA)
1. On your PDA, go to Start->settings->Connections->Network cards
You should find two tabs "Wireless" & "Network Adapters"
2. Click on Add New (in the wireless tab)
3. Give a convinient name, and select "This is a device-to-device (ad-hoc) connection"
4. Complete it by hitting OK
5. Go to "Network Adapters" tab, and choose "tiacxwln Compatible Wireless Ethernet..." adapter
6. Provide a specific IP address (eg. 192.168.1.2) & subnet mask (eg. 255.255.255.0)
7. Press OK to complete it!
8. Now, on your desktop, double click on your wireless connection tray icon, and then click on "Properties" button
9. Double click on "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" in the list to get the tcpip properties
10. Select "Use following IP address, and specify an IP (eg. 192.168.1.1) & subnet (eg. 255.255.255.0)
11. Press Ok, and close all dialogs
12. Now, right click on your wireless tray icon and select "View available wireless networks"
13. If you've got all the above steps right, you should find the Adhoc network you created on your PDA (...you should find the name you provided in step 3!)
14. Connect to it, and you have your wifi adhoc connection established!
Now you can do the following -
1. You can browse the contents of your desktop through Resco by setting up a simple Network drive (as long as you have a username and password for a user account on your desktop, it should be pretty straight forward to do it in resco!)
2. You can use Terminal services client
a. Fire up TSC, and type in your computer's name and press connect
(you can find out by right clicking on your "My Computer" icon and then clicking on properties) Eg. "Laptop" (without the quotes)
b. press connect, and you should see a login screen!
c. Enter your username and password that u use on ur desktop, and you should get things rolling Wink

ok, don't want to use adhoc, have a netgear dg834g, are the instructions the same for the adhoc, as in the ip setup?
One point to note, at least on my setup...
If I try TSC and enter my servers name it attempts to connect via GPRS,3G. If however I enter the IP address it connects with Wifi perfectly.
Not sure why but I can live with it...

My bet would be that your wifi might not be giving you DNS services and your GRPS is.
You would think so, but my laptop and all the other PC's in the house happily connect using TSC to my server using its NAME instead of it's IP. I just thought it was some thing to do with the Universal.
Anyone knows how is possible to set a different port of 3389 default?
I try to write 192.168.1.X:XXXXX but it's impossible..it says The server name is invalid.

No way to redirect on the client side but you could redirect on the server side with a port forwarding type app. Kind of defeats the purpose of obscuring port 3389 though.
the problem with wifi gprs umts vpn and tsc all relate to the same issues, namely "." in the addresses.
the full stop and name issues usually relate in some way to the "my work" and "internet" designations of your connection types.
to cut a long story short, if you are having difficulty using IP addresses (I have never got a name to work), then place the IP address you are trying to use in the exceptions section of your connection type.
this way, the OS allows the "." in the addressing.
I think the "." issue is not allowed when you are the "my work" connection type, as this is designed or expects to a name for the connection. this is so even if you are using myserver.mydomain.com as the addressing.
if it detects the fullstop, it assumes you want to use the "internet" connection, disconnects what you are looking for and starts using the "internet" designated connection, and if it cant find one uses the 3g/gprs and auto launches.
what a wonderful system, and I dont really fully understand the need for "my work" versus "internet" but it is at operating system level from microsoft, and occurs on all the WM2005 devices as far as I can establish.
if you search on "my work" vpn gprs or similar through the forums, you will find a detailed outline and explanations.
i encountered the problems when trying to use TSC over a VPN over either WIFI or 3G, it simply kept cutting out after 2 seconds, or couldnt find it.
IP addresses are far better, far faster if you can use them and know them, add these into your exceptions as you will find that they rarely change and it should all start coming together.
hasnt been mentioned and dont know if it is different for the m5000 on WM5 (iam using an m1000 with SDIO WIFI)
If i have the PDA Connected on the Wireless network to enable me to connect through TSC i always have to ensure that my work network is selected for both of the two options in Network Management, (start/settings/connections/connections/advanced/select networks)
The top one 'programs that connect to the internet should connect using' is the key one for me, i have an orange gprs connection i need to ensure this has orange gprs or it will not connect, and vise versa if connecting through wireless it has to be My Work Network

AS over wifi was disabled for a reason: security, because it's all done cleartext AFAIK. Airscanner doesn't enable wifi syncing AFAIK, but is useful.

I found some info on a microsoft blog a while back but never had chance to try it, if you do and it works could you let me know coz it'd be quite handy considering wifi gives me better distance than bluetooth.

You may want to use Exchange Activesync via WiFi, GPRS or whatever. You do not need your PC in this case but you do need an Exchange Server.
Anyway, regarless of my 'leading question'...
I have not actually tried this (after realizing that ActiveSync over WiFi was a bit 'daft') - I stumbled across it in my attempts to get internet connections at work (which was a complete breeze in comparison to doing the same thing with Bluetooth).

Some people don't have bluetooth!
Hey guys, anyone have an idea how to activesync over wifi with the prophet? I know activesync 4.1, which came in the box, does not support this, so i tried downgrading to 3.8, but activesync 3.8 wont recognize the device even through USB.
Any clues?
WM5 won't work with ActiveSync 3.x; it requires 4.x, which, as you've found out, doesn't support sync over WiFi.
Found this on Modaco if it will help.

I can use Terminal Services Client when connected with Activ Sync.
What am I doing wrong?
It's a home network with a Netgear me102 wireless access point.

How did you manage to make it work. I am trying to use Terminal services to access my home pc via my MDA. I am not sure what settings to use,
Under my work network I created a new connection,
Name: Laptop
Host name/ IP: specified my IP (Tried with computer name before)
VPN type: What do i select here L2TP or PPTP
When I click next I am asked to enter username and password (I guess this is the username for my laptop). I have not touched the default settings under the advanced section.
Use server-assigned IP address was selected by default.
When i try to connect after i while i get the message, unable to connect check username and password.
Please advise what I am doing wrong. Thanks for your help in advance.
You don't need all that VPN crap. In fact delete the connection.
Here is what you have to do:
1) When you connect to your WiFi make sure that what you select under 'This network connects to' matches what you have in settings->connections->connections->advanced->network selection->programs that connect to the network (bottom list)
'internet' = 'My ISP'
'work' = 'My work network'
2) Start the client and enter your PC IP. You should now get a windows logon screen where you can enter your user and password.
Firewall?
can you connect to remote desktop from another workstation on that network? If not then it could be a firewall and you wouldn't be able to connect with your PPC anyways...

I was wondering how to know if WiFi has priority over 3G when its enabled because I notice when I have WiFi enabled and do send and receive in my outlook it's turning on the data connection option in connectivity (thats 3G I'm guessing) and downloading stuff. Ideally I'd like it to use the WiFi if its enabled but am not sure if it is?

The only solution I've found which is quite crap to be honest is to set up a fake dummy connection or go
All settings > Connections tab > Connections > Advanced tab > Select Networks
Then choose My ISP or anything that doesn't have a modem connection defined. You'll then have to turn on wifi whenever you want to access the net. This isn't exactly ideal to be honest.
From what I've found out today and from searching on here is that it's the windows mobile live client has got it built in to prioritize GPRS/3G etc over Wifi ...
utter crap so I looked up alternate ways to get hotmail you can use pop3 and stuff but not sure it will sync like IMAP does, but that's the only solution I've found for now. So change the network connection to something other than mobile web when you're on wifi then change it to mobile web when you're on the streets etc and don't have wifi access.
Must be a better way though??? There's been so many people ask this on this forum and everyone of them got half arsed replies.
Outlook plus pop is ok, that is it use wifi if it is available and 3G otherwise. The problem is on hotmail accessed using windows live.
I found a solution in using HTTPMail provider 1.5 to access hotmail (it is not free but cheap enough). You can find it googling around.
I read reports around about problems during installation so I simply extracted the files (HTTPMail.dll, MIME.dll, HTTPTransport.dll and HTTPMailReg.exe) from the cab and copied them under \windows, registered manually HTTPMail.dll, MIME.dll and HTTPTransport.dll using regsvr_arm.exe (you can find it at http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=80255&d=1207768826) and registered the software using HTTPMailReg.exe
After installation an hotmail account can be created using this procedure.
Open Inbox
Tap Accounts and choose "New Account"
Enter your a fake e-mail address (not hotmail, otherwise windows live kiks in) and tap Next
Skip auto configuration (otherwise windows live kiks in) and tap Next
Set the user name to your complete e-mail address, enter your password, check the "Save password" option and tap Next
Set the Account type to HTTP and tap Next
Depending on which service you are using enter "hotmail" or "msn" (without the quotes) for both the incoming and outgoing server names, leave the domain field blank and tap the "Options" button
Set the connection to "The Internet" and tap Next
Set the maximum amount to fetch for each message or accept the default settings and tap Next
Set the maximum age for the downloaded messages and tap Next

at home, i have a wifi router and i'd like the phone to use that connection when reachable/available. then, when i'm not at home and there's no other wifi available, without doing any manual setting, it should skip to 3G.
is the device working like that by default? any special settings needed?

Can you run over this please as I'm not getting the screens in the order you've written them.
1. First screen I get email address so I put in a fake one.
2. Second screen I get "Your Name" field and then "Account Display Name"
3. Third screen I get "Incoming Mail Server" ... what do I put here? You said "hotmail" or "msn" ... but what exactly... pop3.hotmail.com or what?? and other field is account type. I see HTML there so I choose that.

1. Ok.
2. Insert whatever you like.
3. Insert literally "hotmail" or "msn" and select HTTP.
4. Username should be the complete address, for example [email protected], password ok.
5. Again, insert literally "hotmail" or "msn", advanced setting ok, do not check Outgoing... and Use the same... should be grayed (disabled)
Before that you must register the DLLs (using regsvr_arm.exe) and the software (using HTTPMailReg.exe) and soft reset.
Followed all of that exactly as you said registerd the dlls and the software soft resetted and got a different error 80042002 HTTP Forbidden

I'm sorry but can't say what the problem is.
Just in case this is my account configuration (after the initial configuration I edited the address on the first page to the correct value, maybe you should try this too).
It sounds to me as though the people with the problem of cellular data connection kicking in when there is a valid wifi connection ought to examine the settings in whatever application is playing up.
e.g. someone mentioned that pocket outlook opens a 3G connection instead of using the wifi connection. In this case go into email settings (windows messaging application, menu/options then choose the email account that is causing the problem) click on "edit account setup" then press "next" 3 times and press on "advanced server settings". Check what is set under "Network connection:" In order to use the currently available connection this must be set to "The Internet" If you have set it to your cellular data connection for instance "orange internet" it will always use that connection and ignore the wifi.

I can only choose "Internet" under email settings and not my cellular data..?
The options I have are:
Orange WAP
Orange MMS
Orange Internet
Work
The Internet
I ended up just putting in my hotmail details manually using POP3 and set it to use the pop3.live.com:995 and smtp.live.com:587 rather than this whole HTTP issue with SSL and authentication for outgoing and inbound mail. "The Internet" for the network connection to use and made sure it leaves messages on server so now it'll sync without removing them off the inbox and uses the wifi first rather than the 3G.

I have Telenor/Vodaphone in Sweden and am having similar difficulties. It works well to use "The Internet" if I am on a wireless network. However, if I am without wireless I get connection error and have to switch network to "Telenor Internet" for it to work. Can anyone help out?
I'm currently trying to resolve this same issue on my girlfriend's MWg Zinc II running WM6.1.
The strange thing is, I have a Samsung Omnia, also running 6.1, with (as far as I can tell) the exact same setup for email and connections, but I don't have this issue.... ie when I'm connected to wifi and I sync my hotmail, it uses the wifi connection and does not try to connect using cellular data.

On both phones, when I "choose the email account", the next screen to appear is the Windows Live settings screen (where you cannot select the options you mention), not the standard email settings screens... so this method does not work for me.

I've had the same problem on my new Touch Pro 2 on T-Mobile, but didn't have it with my Vodafone v1615 (HTC TyTN II).

This has fixed my problem.
I have had this problem with windows live for over 4 years, all other applications will use wifi over 3G if its available.
Windows live will only use 3G, which is an absolute nightmare when traveling as i dissable data and make use with WIFI in hotels and cafes.
