Using One Carrier's Phone on Another Carrier - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam General

Where I live Cingular has leased their service (towers) to a company called Edge Wireless. Edge Wireless is called a partner company to Cingular. They use the same equipment . Anyway, this means that Cingular won't sell me their phones or their cell service. I am forced to buy these things through Edge Wireless (whatever happened to a free market?).
What I'd like to know, is can I buy a Cingular 8525 (aka Hermes/TyTN) and use it with Edge Wireless service? My current phone is a Nokia 2260 (very old CDMA phone). It doesn't have a SIM. How do I go about making sure that I can:
1) Get a Cingular 8525 to work
2) Get a SIM for it from my provider Edge Wireless
I'm kind of new to all of this. I just want to use an 8525/Hermes/TyTN and I'm trying to find a way to do so.
Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

If you want to use an 8525 on another network, you'd need to get it unlocked first, as it's currently locked to Cingular. After it's unlocked, you're free to use it on ANY carrier in the world that supports GSM.

But this IS Cingular's network (or is it?) That's really what my question is about. It's Cingular's equipment (towers and such). When my friend (who has a Cingular phone where he lives visits his phone says "Cingular" on it. Mine says Edge (I'm referring to the network. Neither one says ROAM.
It's all pretty confusing to me.
Thank you for the help.

why not just go out of town and get cingular service? Im always a fan of cutting out the middle man. Also since EDGE is a partner that means cingular may own the towers, but they have an agreement not to sell cellular service there (im sure the fcc is to thank for this, something about allowing other companies to compete blah blah blah, i work in a similiar enviroment, however in telco world this is considered a CLEC competative local exchange carrier, im sure its different for wireless). Since EDGE is leasing then neither of you will roam while in the area...

I was concerned that I would get my service canceled if I did this.
I'd tried to take advantage of a deal at Amazon.com for the 8525 for $190, but since my credit card address was out of the area, they said it wouldn't work most likely...

Why Cant I Get Edge Data? (Cingular)

Over the last few weeks Ive noticed that I can no longer get Edge data on my 8125. It seemingly happened overnight. Ive been in Florida and Chicago and both coverage maps show Edge as being available and Ive used it in the past. Therefore, Im thinking its some type of internal issue with my device. I can only receive GPRS. Has anyone else experienced this problem? Please help.

I have had loss of Data entirely with some of the new radio/wm6 combos
it is usually solved by soft reset.
what GSM version do you have 2.19, 2.25, 2.47, 2.61, something else?
I have had dataproblems with 2.47 and 2.61 but then again i got wm6 at the same time so it could be that.
Post the rom version you are using also.
Im using ROM version 2.25.11.1 WWE. Not sure what GSM version. How can I tell?

when it loads up
IPL x.xxxx
SPL x.xxx
GSM x.xxx
OS x.xxx
Just so you know the GSM = Rodio version
The thing i have noticed is that things get messed up on WM phones just like they do on windows computers. Flashing a phone can make problems go away. I am addicted to flashing my phones. recently I have been doing it at least once a day. If you have wireless active sync and a big storage card flashing your phone doesn't slow you down a bit.
I guess what I am saying is try reflashing your phone, or changing the radio only or a simple hard reset, then see if you get your edge back.
I lost my Edge data too
Around the first of February, my phone quit receiving edge data in my home town. icould receive it fine in other areas, but it just went away at home.
four calls to cingular all said the same thing. "We don't offer edge in your area". This despite the fact that I've been using it and paying $45 per month for the past 5 months.
I think I must have been getting a signal from a third party and that party no longer plays nice with ATT.

How can you tell the difference aside from the speed of it. If you have the reghack to make the "E" icon appear does it change to "G" when you have no EDGE?
I don't think I have ever not gotten EDGE anywhere I have been. I am just kind of curious how you know that you aren't getting it.
I'm curious too
My phone always showed an "E" for edge data just about everywhere I went (I live in SE Kansas). Around the first of February, the "E" changed to a "G" and the data rate slowed to the range called "unusable". I bought the "unlimited" data package and was using the phone to stream xm radio for about 30 minutes a day.
After the "E" went away where I live, I took the phone to Kansas City and the "E" returned, so I don't think the phone was having problems. According the Cingular's service maps, my town is in their "extended" area, meaning I'm probably roaming on someone elses tower (probably Alltel). I noticed that Sprint and Alltell recently inked a deal to share their towers and I notice that both Sprint and Alltell offer their 70k bandwidth data in my area. My guess is Cingular decided I was being a little too "unlimited" so the gave me the axe. I called and cancelled the $40 per month charge.
I've talked to people in Rural SE Kansas who have been called by Cingular and told they are being dropped as a customer because they are making a high percentage of their calls from towers that aren't owned by Cingular.
I've made a big investment in phones with Cingular and will stay on as a customer. My hope is that they'll roll out the data carpet here again soon. If not, I'll switch to Sprint or Alltel....I just hate that little antenna though.
alltel and Cingular
Say what. Altell and Sprint run off of a diffrent network technologies than GSM. I'm sure this might have been do to some roaming agreements expiring. I know that some T-mobile roaming agreements have expired with Cingular and they probably arn't going to renew them. You were probably roaming on another providers network but I can guarantee that it wasn't sprint, verizon or alltell they are not gsm

An interesting topic, I knew that the formentioned companies were not GSM, however I just got thinking about roaming and coverage with GSM. Does anyone have definative list of what GSM companies have roaming agreements with what other companies and how that works?
I use a company called UNICEL they have the lock down in my area, Vermont, being that vermont and other areas that UNICEL covers are heavily trafficed by tourists that use Cingular or T-Mobile I know that UNICEL has gotten good roaming agreements with them. In fact I have even gotten access credits when my data didn't work on Long Island, NY for an afternoon (I thought that was pretty cool that UNICEL gave me money back on my nation wide data when I was on Cingular's network)
Anyway I wonder if little old UNICEL has such nice arangements in place with other little providers. Perhaps I try to get that info and start a thread about it so others can give info about there networks. It could be a pretty good or at least interesting network.
zanda61 the other thing I find interesting is that your "home area" is not in the Cingular network, I have known quite a few people that have been dropped for doing this. How are you able to maintain your plan? Do you frenquent an area that has Cingular coverage and make calls there?
Phone Home
When I signed up over the telephone, the sales rep said nothing about me not being in their "home" area. I simply made the assumption that they wanted the business so they were offering phones nationwide. We have a family plan with rollover and rarely use our monthly allotment of minutes. Also, my daughter lives in KC so she makes all of her calls on the home network.
We've been customers for about 4 years now and they've never said a word about our usage habits.
I know Sprint and Alltel use cdma phones, but they are the only other carriers in this area. I don't know that much about the radios other than they use a different frequency. But don't they both offer phones with radios that will work at different frequencies?
By the way, thanks for writing back. I hope I haven't hijacked this thread but this stuff is fascinating to me.

Unlocking 8525 to use on sprint

Is this possible? I went into a Sprint store and they told me that it was against store policy to do that.
I really like this phone but I hate Cingular service it has to be the worst possible out there.
I appreciate any and all answers.
thanks in advance!
I beleive they are two different types.. Cingular is GSM .. I forget what sprint is.. but it's not GSM
nope wont work att is gsm sprint is cdma
so I guess I need to go back to cingular to still use this phone? Any others carriers I can use it on that may be worth my time?
Sprint uses CDMA, which is an old, OLD OOOOLLLLDDDD technology.
Sprint invested a lot in building the CDMA network in North America so they seem reluctant to abandon it, even if it is an inferior network infrastructure in nearly every measurable way.
With almost all other carriers, it is possible to unlock phones, swap SIM cards, etc., to change providers. With Sprint, it's not possible.
You could move to T-Mobile service easily. I'm not sure about Verizon.

Very true. T-Mobile and AT&T are the only major GSM carriers in the USA. Verizon, like Sprint is CDMA.
American Networks
Cingular/AT&T = GSM
T-Mobile = GSM
Sprint+nextel = CDMA/TDMA
Verizon = CDMA
US Cellular = CDMA
Thats all I know, i will keep digging
Here's a list of current and future GSM carriers in the USA, most of which I've never heard of:
http://www.gsmworld.com/roaming/gsminfo/cou_us.shtml
So another big-ish player who uses GSM would be Alltel.
Here's a list of CDMA carriers, if interested:
http://www.rentcell.com/cdma-info.htm
um... alltel is most deff CDMA and dobson cellular systems (which at&t just bought) also uses GSM..
revol wireless is cdma
northcoast pcs is cdma also
No, this website is correct about Alltel. If you look at its GSM coverage map, their GSM coverage is a bit limited. It's just not GSM where you are.
I don't know about the others you mentioned, or care.
so do alltel phones run dual then? cdma/gsm? cuz ive NEVER seen a gsm alltel phone at the store.. unless that area you mentioned has special phones

hahahahahahahahaha
Altell mainly uses CDMA in the US and only uses GSM for roaming partner revenue. CDMA is not old oudated technology either ATT/Cingular is using WCDMA now which is slightly different.
Sprint does have an equivalent to the 8525. It was the MDA and now it's the prophet I think - you may want to double check that. You should be able to ebay your 8525 for about as much as an ebay prophet will cost you.
hi
The prophet is also a GSM phone
as much as everyone hates at&t, i've had them for 10 years. Lately, the customer service has been much better, and I have never had a problem with service in my area. I would look over at my girlfriend's phone, which is T-Mobile, and then look over at my 8525, and when I had full service with at&t, she either had none or barely one bar. at&t is apparently spending $18 MIL a day putting up 70 new towers a week to expand not only the regular network, but the 3g network. also, if you go with t-mobile (correct me if i am wrong) but you won't get umts/hspda. good luck with your choice.

Sprint has the PPC6800 and, VZW is rumored to soon have the XV6800. Both are the same phones that are labeled for each carrier. It is the HTC Mogul (TyTN with WM6 and slightly smaller).
As for which network strategy is better, that has become quite a religious war because there is not much different anymore. CDMA always had the technical advantage, but now with WCDMA, there is much more parity.
As for which one is older, GSM was there before CDMA. To me, the key benefit to GSM based networks is that they can be used almost anywhere (given the right radio frequencies in the phone). CDMA is limited.

Yes it is true that Alltel "owns" GSM, but that is because in 2005 they purchased a company called Western Wireless. They still run as two seperate companies. Alltel runs their network based completely on CDMA and has roaming agreements with Sprint and Verizon.
Here is a map for you: http://www.mountainwireless.com/Alltel_ww.jpg

ATT only have CDMA back then..then they upgraded their network to GSM and phase out the CDMA network to better compete with Cingular and T-mobile. Now with the merger between ATT and Cingular, they only have GSM networks. The new WCDMA is planned to boost its 3G speed.
It boils down to this: GSM is the worldwide standard for cellular phone communication, except in the U.S. If you never plan on travelling outside the U.S. then the CDMA technology is fine for you (Sprint, Verizon). If you ever think you may want to travel ANYWHERE outside the U.S. and take your phone with you for quick and easy communication, and maybe even data link, then consider GSM. In the U.S. that would be ATT/Cingular, T-Mobile (there may be a few new smaller outfits as well). ATT/Cingular leads the pack in 3G/HSDPA (cellular broadband) coverage.
Service seems to depend on who, at the present time, is #1 in subscribers and who is trying to BECOME #1. I originally had Verizon until my travels took me overseas frequently. Verizon's customer svc had started to fall off as far as I was concerned. My experience with ATT/Cingular's cust svc gets them a rating of 'Fair'--nothing spectacular, but I don't use cust svc very often and their signals are the best around.

Nextel and Hermes

Does Any Knows If A Nextel Sim Works In a Hermes ??
Or Any Know How To Make It Work??
In Advance Thx
Uh, can we say totally different radio technology?
its the Titan that u need, not the hermes
Sprint Mogul is what you are lookin for. You might wanna do a little research on phone technologies and the various radio technologies that all the companies use. cdma/gsm/iden
But the Mogul is CDMA No Gsm and the Nextel Sim Works With the GPRS Etc Etc
gprs is something else and nextel is IDEN
Are Sprint data plans compatible with 8525 ?
I'm a newbie when it comes to wireless technologies, so I apologize if this is a silly question -
Since this thread is about Hermes/8525 and Nextel, which is related to Sprint, I thought this question might belong in this thread:
is there any chance that an unlocked 8525 could work with Sprint PCS Vision data plan? I'm asking because Sprint's data plans are really inexpensive compared to AT&T's (I'd rather not go with AT&T anyway).
If Sprint + 8525 combination does not work, what other options are for providers of data plans besides AT&T?
Thanks a lot for any ideas.

Actually, Sprint's technology is NOT related to Nextel. They are 2 COMPLETELY different Radio types. The confusion comes into play because Sprint bought out Nextel 2 years ago (which, by the way, is when Nextel went to hell... but that's another story). Nextel uses Motorola's IDEN radio technology which was the original (and still the best) Push-to-talk type. Sprint uses CDMA radio technology (Same as Verizon) these have identifiers LOCKED to the individual phones themselves and are NOT compatible with ATT/TMobile/Other GSM networks.
Nextel and ATT/TMobile/Other GSM carriers may both use SIM cards but rely on independent technologies.
Recap:
Nextel/Boost/AMP = IDEN
Sprint/Verizon = CDMA
ATT/T-Mobile = GSM
There are NO radio types that are intercompatible.
Assuming that you are in the States, then the only other real option is T-Mobile.
Thanks for the detailed explanation. So I think I'll go with AT&T after all and get a refurbished Samsung Sync with 3G SIM and Media Max for $20 online, then put the SIM into the 8525 once I have it unlocked (hopefully this weekend). Let me know if you see any issues with that.
Thanks a lot again.
First u have to spit all over the part of the SIM with the gold colored stuff, then lick the battery terminals and touch them against ur nextel sim. the last step is to insert it into the phone. if that fails then place the phone on the ground with the slide open and urinate on it while u hum the national anthem(USAOnly).
if that fails then call ur carrier and tell them the steps you took so they can mail u a warranty exchange device.
**edit**
many users have reported that carriers like ATT will give you with up to a month of free services if u tell them the promotion code below and that u can use ATT media net instead of the pda plan to get unlimited tethering. tell them that you let at least 10 other friends(with their phone #s) in on the deal and they will give u 3 months of free medianet!

Sprint is a CDMA network. It doesn't use SIM card, and the user data is stored on the phone. You cannot use it on other networks.
So getting it without contract is just... without contract. You need to be on Sprint's network for it to work.
well looks like im switching to sprint lol

Theoretically you can swap the radio chip inside and add a sim card slot too add GSM support too. I don't want to waste time arguing with you on that, but if you do know how to unlock a Sprint CDMA phone to use on Verizon yourself, congrats, you can make big bucks with that knowledge.
BTW, to those who are considering getting onto Sprint for the Hero, note that Sprint's network cannot do voice and data simultaneously, so if you are downloading stuff, you won't be able to receive. It's like the GPRS problem on GSM network, it's just that current Sprint network faces that problem even on 3G.

As I understand, CDMA networks need to register the ESN of your device to their network, but most CDMA networks (at least Sprint and Verizon) no longer allow the registration of ESNs that were originally registered to other networks. Apparently Verizon used to allow 3rd party ESNs, but no longer do this, but I cannot find any "official" confirmation of this.
i.e. if you have a Sprint phone, it will have a Sprint ESN and Verizon would refuse to add this to their database.
I believe there are methods to clone another ESN onto a new phone, but I've no idea how "legal" this is.

Dave

This is BestBuy's modus operandi..which is charging more (lots more) than even Sprint's MSRP. So if one is considering buying at full price without contact, go to Sprint directly. The flip side is that they usually have better new/upgrade-contract prices than Sprint since BestBuy doesn't do mail-in-rebates, they make it instant.
Some folks on spintusers.com are claiming $429.99 Sprint full price.

Anybody know of any good pre-paid, alternative GSM phone company? My friend has H2O but I don't think they support the Vibrant.
So, what is you guys experience with them? Does their data/coverage suck?
For GSM, you're out of luck... you could try simple mobile or walmart, but they both use tmobile's network.
You have to move to a cdma provider Verizon, sprint, cricket, metro pcs, virgin mobile., etc.
Which actually makes a good point. After this merger AT&T will pretty much be the one and only GSM network in the US. Would this still be considered a monopoly? I LOVE being able to pull my sim out and put it in another phone quickly and easily plus I believe the call quality is much better. But that means I MUST use AT&T.
