Is there a way to edit/modify a protected file in \Windows? - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam General

Hi
I'd like to edit the file Preconfig.txt in \Windows. This file is protected. Is there any way to make a file in \Windows writable?
Thank you
Jean-Yves

If I recall correctly, you can copy the file out of the windows directory to another directory and then paste it back over the top of the protected one and then you can edit it.
I may be wrong though, so sorry if I'm leading you up the garden path!

What Codenix said is true, if the file is inside the ROM.
If the file is 'protected' in terms of attributes, you can use Total Commander to disable the attribute first.

I tried removing the read-only/system attributes in Total Commander in some \Windows files on my x01ht, but every time the attributes are reseted back! How to avoid this?!?

yes i have the same problem with you~~
although i use active sync to copy the files to ppc \windows
it also block me and say protected
and i want to copy a new phcanOverbmp.dll replace the old one....
what should i do???
can some brother help~!!!

Some files are in use and cant be unprotected and written over in this manner.. the only way to do it when it fails like that is to cook your own rom... which we are still trying to do, but get closer every day
And for the phcanOverbmp.dll we have cabs in the upgrading forum for this.. read here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=287829

and why if i want to edit my start menu items from ASync it don't work?
The files are unprotected but from active sync explorer i can't delete/move it... with resco explorer there are no problems!..
Also.... it interrupt file transfers if i try to copy thumbs.db.. included in win folders :x

I had the same problem - ActiveSync seems to not have the necessary rights for these files. The methods described here solved the problem for me. Yes, the text behind the link talks about problems with registry access, but the reasons and solutions for both problems are the same.

That may or may not be the same problem. I would guess thumbs.db may just be in use (i.e., opened).

Files in Windows folder: can they be safely deleted?

I've got lots of .dsm and .rgu files in my Windows folder, for example
12e09329-dd44-jhg589856-jh2525656598.DSM or .RGU
they're about 1 to 20k big. About 40-50 of them sit on top of my Windows folder.
have you got them too? What are they there for? And can I get rid of them?
They seem to be "hidden in rom" though, as they appear when the option "hidden on rom" is ticked in total Commander.
they also appear on my desktop's Explorer , throuh Windows Mobile/MyWindowsMobiledevice/Windows (or similar path)
Thanks for you help!
I think it is some digital cert for granting application access. If you delete it, you will be asked some applications is not signed and do you want to execute it. If you say yes, it will create this file again.
right. Have you got them too, or is it only me?
Yes, there is some in my k-jam too, from the timestamp you will know it is created when you installed some applications each time.
and what about this directory
\Windows\OEM on my qtek 9100
It contains MFC80U.dll
and msvcr80.dll
it looks like visual studio files and I don't understand what it does in my user memory.
Either it should be in WM5 files or It should be removed.
What do you think?
Regarding Bynaris Smartexplorer it is the best for smartphones clearly but:
1 - it is not a task manager, it is a file explorer
2 - it has been design to be used with numeric keypad shortcuts on pocket pc it is a pain to use.
However I really like its quickness.
I will just wait for a more pocket pc friendly version before I replace resco explorer.

Editing File Attributes

Sorry if this has been covered, looked but couldn't find anything detailed enough.
I'd like to change two of the files in the "windows" directory, specifically the phone app background files. (Using OzVGA they're currently not large enough).
I've made two new .bmps but cant copy over the original files (Bckgnd_Land.bmp & Bckgnd_Port.bmp) because they have the "Read-Only" and "System" attributes set. I can't change these attributes in File Explorer on the Universal, nor from within WinXPHome's Explorer while the device is connected. (I can see the attributes, but they're shaded and inaccessible).
Do I need another file explorer or something?? I think i saw a post where somene else had done something similar, but now can't find that post!!!
yes, use Resco Explorer or Total Commander
Please note that those files are in ROM, so you are not really overwriting them. You merely bend the pointer. As soon as you delete your own creation the old file handle is restored.

So what you're saying is that I can't alter these files??
Installed Total Commander and although it appears to have the ability to change the attributes... it can't. I assume that's because they're in Rom?

welcome.exe

Hello all.
Im having a bit of bother with my xda2i, its given me nothing but trouble for about 5 hours now. The problem i have is the align screen wont progress and therefore the device wont start. I have been into the \Windows\StartUp folder via activesync and removing the welcome.exe shortcut from the folder allows the device to start without requiring the screen alignment, problem then is that the screen alignmnet is very wrong. i cannot find the welcome.exe that the link refers to, i assume that it shoud be in the \Windows folder, any idea's? If the file is missing from the folder, does anybody know where a copy can be found.
Many thanks
Stev
That file is in my \Windows folder with Welcome.exe and welcome.lnk, but when I try to copy it to my desktop to zip up for you, I get a file not found error, it may possibly be protected in some way?

I think you are right, a pal of mine has the same device and he tried to copy the files, tried everything to bring it back to life but alas it is dead.
Roll on renewal time.

unlocking the registry?

I'm new to this site and the ways of fooling with the details of this phone. I have an HTC Mogul 6800, WM 6.1, through Sprint. I am trying to install some "iPhone" type software and am stuck almost at the starting point. I'm trying to copy this file
welcomehead.96.png
into the /windows directory on the phone. Since that file already exists on the phone, it would appear that it needs to be overwritten. It won't overwrite as that file on the phone is marked as "read-only". How can I edit that file to remove the "read-only"
thanks
Why not just move the old file to another directory?
I believe you're trying to change the splash screen? Apparantly that file is locked as ROM file and so overwriting may not be possible. Why don;t you change the registry value to point to a different file? Refer this Splash Screen changing guide.
Preffered Registry editior: Free PHM Registry editor
Regards,
Carty..
The file is Read-only, so I can't move it. I tried installing the PHM Registry editor, it thinks it's a Microsoft Daylight savings time update.

Use this......It's a file explorer that will overwrite most system files.
To unlock the registry which you really don't need to do for this simple file overwrite. Do a search for CERegEditor. It's a pc app that will sync to your phone and view aswell as edit your registry. There is a command within the program to unlock with.

I've actually had bad luck with Total Commander. I've successfully overwritten the file once out of a dozen tries. I've tried the Copy command as well as Move.
Anyone having better luck that can chime in? I'm wondering if I'm just missing a setting in Total Commander.

Have you tried copy to clipboard?
You can also rename the file and then put the new one in there with the good one.

Well I can overwrite with TC and GSFinder. I change my splash screen often due to boredom and I can't remember the last time I had an issue. Your ROM stock or Custom?
My ROM is stock. I guess I'll try this softwre listed above, hopefully I can change the value of this file as it can't be moved, overwritten or re-named right now.

character "°"

Hi guys!
I have this problem: I saw that the keyboard the character "°" ( example n° or °C), but I need it in my technical notes.
Does anyone know if I can put it in the registry keys?
Thanks in advance
Are there are any solutions?
Hi,
I found the right file to edit to get the character, but they are "read-only".
So, I can modify it when I make a copy on pc but I can't modify the files on the ROM.
Does anyone know how I can do it?
Make a copy, edit, copy back to original location, "overwriting" the current one (it doesn't really overwrite, if you were to delete it later the original would be used instead).
Thanks kilrah.
I tried this way (I made a backup copy of files) but I can't overwrite the original ones because they are "read-only".
On PC I can change this attribute and then, edit and save the files.
On device I can't change this attribute or overwrite the files
Dam you're right, I don't have the ° char on my italian keyboard as well... as unlikely it is I will be needing to write it on my hd2... how silly is that for HTC not to have included that symbol?

Copy the file on the device itself. What I mean is if you try to overwrite a file in the \Windows directory from the PC through Activesync it won't work. With the file explorer on the device itself, it should.
The files for Italian keyboard should be 0C09.xml (portrait) and 0D09.xml (landscape).
It is right?
