Device name change - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario General

When I first setup my XDA Mini-S, I gave it my full name (firstname surname) as my device name. This has the unwanted side effect of giving out my full name (which is rare name!) to every Hotspot I connect to. I don't like the implications of this and want to correct this.
I have seen in the settings on my XDA that I can change this device name to anything I want. However, what will this do to my current sync setup with my PC? Will changing this name on the PDA upset the PC? Will it just create a new Sync user? Will it correctly recognise that the name has changed but it is still the same device so keep the profile, but update its name accordingly?
Any help on how to update without causing any problems would be appreciated.
Thanks
Mike

from experience with an older PDA and activisync, changing the name could create a new sync user and there should be no problems .. but don't take my word for it...

Thanks for that help.
Would that mean that all my settings would be transferred to the new profile seamlessly? Are there any downside to having a new profile?
Can I easily delete everything in the old profile (to save duplications), without losing info on the device or PC?
Any more info anyone can supply would be great.
Thanks
Mike

Hi Mike,
I don't dare to answer you specifically as I don't sync with my PC. I just know that
Just sync with another PC...
Hmm, I just tried and change my device ID.. Activesync seems to just follow the name change..

Do you mean changing your "Owner Name"? I don't think changing your Owner Name is any problem with ActiveSync.
What I found that WAS a headache was that purchased software registration keys are often tied to the Owner Name, and won't work if the Owner Name is different from what you listed when you purchased the software.

i dont know about a reg key to change your wireless name... but there might be, i know there is one to change your bluetooth name..

Change bluetooth name
\HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Bluetooth\Settings\LocalName = (String Value)

Hi There,
You can change your device ID as often as you like - however, I would recommend that you delete the current mobile device first (in Activ Sync under File Menu) - then just rename your device (under "About/Device ID) on your XDA mini s and reconnect to your PC via activ sync. You should see the system open the "Set up new partnership" screen just follow the instructions and you should have a new connection with your device using your new device ID.
Hope this helps - it's should be simple.
Chris.

This is what I thought of doing. It sounds like you think that no data should be lost in the transfer to a new DeviceID, it will just create a new profile.
I guess the method you are suggesting would be:
1) Full Sync.
2) Delete Profile off Computer
3) Change DeviceID
4) Re-sync with computer creating new profile with wizard.
My real question would be with step 2, should this be the last step instead? Or will it cause a conflict? (My concern being if anything went wrong, then I just lost the previous config too so couldn't roll back.
I guess I could add a "Take Disk Image" of the PC hard drive as step (1.5), so that if it all goes wrong, I could restore the PC back to that point in time, and therefore recover the old sync profile.
If someone can confirm where step 2 should be that'd be great.
Thanks again,
Mike
PS I seem to have stopped receiving email updates about this thread, even though I got one after at the beginning (after the first reply, but before I replied back - none for the subsequent replies from the rest of you!). Instant email notification is still enabled for this thread. Strange!

Hi again,
Regarding - step 2 - you could leave your existing profile on your PC and delete at the end if you wish. But my expirience is that the Device ID is just a name - you will get the option to select what you want to "Sync" with the device during the "set up partnership" phase.
I sync with two PC's all the time (Home and Work) and due to IT re-installs at work I quite often have to re-install PDA software and have never "lost" data after a re-name.
I think the key is to make sure you select what you want to sync with on the patnership set up - afterall the data on the PC will not have changed.

Chris.

weird glitches after installing activesync

installed activesync that came with my xda exec yesterday. it synced once and i was able to browse the files on the pda from my pc.
but now however, it won't sync, just says connecting on the pc end and no syncing logo in the status bar on the xda. upgraded to activesync 4.1, but still the same problem.
also, i can no longer bring up the phone screen, i can make calls from the contacts list and receive calls, but the phone screen no longer pops up (sound still plays after clicking the phone icon thou).
only got the xda yesterday and set it up into personal mode, installed clearview pdf reader from the cd.
no other changes.
any ideas?
does soft reset erase all your documents and contacts?
thanks.
Do a soft reset and the problem will be fixed.
Tip: XDA EXEC runs faster with less glitches in BASIC mode. Thought I mention it !
No, a soft reset will not erase any of your data. I would certainly start there. Do you (or a friend) have another PPC device to connect to your computer to see if A/S will work with that device?
I would think that since you just go it yesterday, today would be a good day to do a Hard Reset (if the above does not fix it). Chances are good you will wind up doing one anyway, so do it now to avoid further frustration and before you have a bunch of programs and data loaded.
Just my .02
Forgot to mention, soft reset doesn't erase anything, its like rebooting your PC.
Hard reset DOES erase, so be careful of this one !
i've just soft reseted it and now the phone screen works.
i changed the size of the icons and after the soft reset, they were back to normal. was this the cause of the phone screen problem?
i don't have another ppc around, but i can connect to my pc via bluetooth and transfer files both ways but not sync.
is there anyway to view/add/change the files on the xda without syncing/bt ie using the cable and windows explorer?
i don't expect to be emailing much from the xda, so is there any benefit to syncing?
i'll be doing a hard reset soon, the xda went into personal mode before i had time to read up waht the different modes did in the manual.
wifi & bt work very quickly thou, which is nice.
Don't know about size of icons thing as I haven't tried it.
The sync functionality doesn't just sync email, it does sync your calendar, notes , tasks and contacts too. It also syncs files for you.
You can set it so it syncs just the stuff you want it to sync including non (during setting up your sync just tick what you want synced or untick everything to sync nothing).
is there anyway to view/add/change the files on the XDA without syncing/bt ie using the cable and windows explorer?
i've had to soft reset the xda again as the phonepad was playing up again.
i'm going to hard reset into corporate mode, what do i need to save beforehand?
reading from another forum, i see that i have to save mms settings (done) and 3g settings (don't know where they are). anything else?
regards,
haroon.

Do you want to never Sync or only when you choose ? If never Sync when you installed ActivSync it gave you wizard to configure what you want syncing, here you could have unticked everything.

I kept getting that in Personal Mode, since changing to Basic mode I don't get the problem anymore. To change to Basic mode , click on your start menu then Programs then Install type.

I have never used corporate mode before so I don't know. I did come across another post on this forum which had all the settings for corporate mode listed. Try doing a forum search for setup.
got it running in corporate mode now, all seems so good so far.
still won't sync thou, doesn't get past the connecting stage.
i'm going to try reinstalling activesync from the cd and uncheck everything from the setup wizard.
i'll post the results a bit later.
thanks for the info linux!
Have you checked your personal Firewall (and/or XP's built in Firewall) as this will prevent ActiveSync making a connection..
These are the entries in mine:
Control Panel > Windows Firewall > Exceptions Tab
1. ActiveSync Application
2. ActiveSync Connection Manager
3. ActiveSync RAPI Manager
4. ActiveSync Service
If you click on the first one > Change Scope
Choose (*) Custom List
Entry: 169.254.2.0/255.255.255.0
This is set the same for 1->3..
The 4th option requires Port 26675 open on TCP
As I understand it, ActiveSync 4.x creates a TCP/IP connection similar to a TCP/IP network connection so a Firewall can screw things up a treat.
Might also be worth checking in your TaskManager list for the following executables when you startup ActiveSync:
1. WCESMgr.exe
2. wcescomm.exe
3. rapimgr.exe
These relate to the executables that are setup in those 1-3 services in Firewall Exceptions.
Hope it helps..

ActiveSync; Does PC always take precedence over PDA?

Is there a way of setting ActiveSync so that, when there is conflict, it asks you what version you wish to Sync? What my problem is; I set up all my appointments using my PC, in the notes section I have the related contacts details (name and address, so I know where I am going). When I am out and about and have finish with my customer, I like to make notes on what I have done for them. However, when I sync my PDA all the notes I added on whilst on the move get over written by the PC version (e.g. no comments).
Is there a way to rectify this?
Thanks in advance,
Harold Clements
Tool then option you can tell it how you want a-sync to act, have the computer over ride, pda to over ride. or if you go in to the pda a-sync you can say there too!
Thank you very much for your reply
I have looked at that. I get my PC’s name up and then click setting on the calendar. In the 'calendar synchronisation setting' the only option I get is ‘Synchronise only the past’ and a combo box with weeks in. There does not seem to be a choice over which device gets precedence.
Thanks,
Harold Clements
One of a long list
....Of stupid changes MS made when making WM5 and AS 4.0......No back up software, and no option to sync the way I want to! Not to mention taking away other syncing options! I am thinking about trying finchsync and using lighting inside of Thunderbird. That way I can side step MS all together (well except for device OS)

ActiveSync Settings

Hi Guys!
I've got a secondary XDA Executive that I keep as a fall-back if the main one breaks down. Here is my question.
I've copied everything from the MAIN XDA to the secondary one (using SPB Backup) and they function identically. The only problem is that if I try and connect the SECONDARY device to my PC to sync it with Outlook it thinks it's the MAIN device (maybe that's no surprise) and it really screws up the sync process. I just wondered where the settings are held for the 'partnership' for ActiveSync on the PDA???
I tried changing the device name but it still thinks it's the MAIN device.
I guess what I'm trying to do is get the SECONDARYdevice to NOT have any partnership at all so I can set it up as a second partnership on my PC
Any thoughts?
Thanks
S
In ActiveSync:
Menu->Options click on the computer which you have the partnership with and then click "Delete".
That should delete the partnership that your phone has stored on it and the next time you connect it to your computer it will prompt you to create a new partnership.

Thanks for the quick reply!
Doh! It's always the simple solutions that get me! ))
Brilliant!
PS Do you happen to know where that info is stored (that gets deleted) is it a single file or an entry in the registry?
Ta
S
No idea sorry, just had to do it myself recently and only figured it out after trying for about 2 hours...

[Tip] [Final update] ActiveSync is boring you ? Be your guest !

If you use it as a backup only, as I do, you may want to prevent it from synchronizing, cause it does it often even if you unchecked everything, it's long and it slows down your device meanwhile. Not a big deal, but we're all here so that our life becomes easier right ?
So, using PIM Backup, you can automaticaly backup your whole PIM + files\folder to the storage card, everyday at the time you want, and it will even wake up the pda to backup and suspend it right after, so that you can schedule it by night. It takes around a minute to backup.
Now you can just leave Active Sync in guest mode.... and then you tell me:
Yeah but it will ask me to pair everytime I connect my device !!
That's where my script is showing up: it will stay in background and will closes Active Sync windows as soon as they'll show up.
Just unzip & run once
To uninstall, just delete ActiveSyncBlaster in your Windows directory.
FINAL UPDATE (22.10.07) fyahstar just gave us the reg key I was looking for.... Add a DWORD "GuestOnly" = 1 in HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows CE Services for a perfect result (no window opening at all). Or you can rename attachment to .reg and launch it.
Update (21 oct. 07) Everything's fixed
I merged both scripts into one, which will handle both cases (Outlook installed or not).
It will not stay open in background anymore: Now it will only be launched when the device is connected.
It now comes with an installer, just run it and you're done !
Oh, & it's a bit faster too.
Update (07 oct.07) I made a version for those who don't have Outlook installed (extra window to close)
Huh.
Very cool idea. I do the same thing as I use OTA sync but I don't sync with my computer, so I get that dumb "guest" thing all time. I found AS continuous sync interferes with my DUN, overloading the device CPU.
I'll have to try this out tonight, but sounds great, so thanks!
it's easier than this - make a normal AS connection, and in a configurator, uncheck all options... and that's it

believe it or not, it's not that easy.
even with nothing checked, the AS will still continue every couple of minutes to sync with the device, even if it's technically not synching information.

It still synchronises: ie starting to exchange with the device, open files for comparison, etc.
The worst is, it will do it even if outlook is not installed.
I'll also check the registry when I get time to see if nothing can be done by that side.
does it still sync constantly in guest mode? I was reading a kind of related (very old) article...
GuestOnly is the real magic in our personal Sync Stations; it’s responsible for allowing all new devices (i.e., those that don’t already have a partnership with the PC) to connect as guests without being prompted to establish a partnership. (Note that all devices that have an existing partnership with the PC will still connect and synchronize as they did before.)

Thanks for this - it is just what I've been looking for to get rid of the annoying "you will only be able to sync..." messages every time I hook up my phone. Will install tonight!
New version
I made a version for those who don't have Outlook installed (extra window to close), 1st post edited
the new version (no outlook) posted will work only once, I will post a working version tomorrow.
I have a questions. It may sound stupid, but I tried to fix it myself without resolution. The files are for the PC. How does it work?
Thanks

mmm, I'm not certain to understand correctly... yep those are for desktop side (PC). You just have to put one of them (it depends if outlook is installed or not) in your startup folder so that it'll be launched along with act.sync when the computer starts. Then, when you connect your device, if you choosed NOT to pair it with that computer (so that no sync.will ever be launched), annoying windows are showing, and my script will close them instantly. I did it using auto-hotkey. Didn't have enough time to fix it right now, but I swear it will be done till wednesday ^_^'
I'll also investigate in another (proper) method to achieve the same thing via reg-editing and I'll let you know if something can (has) be done that way.
Everything's fixed

Here is the registry key to enable GuestOnly mode for activesync. Rename file extension from .txt to .reg. Hope this helps.
Well, while it makes all my work useless (and your file is missing slashes), it works fine, many thanks
my bad on the slashes, thanks for correcting it.
I don't mean to make stupid questions again.
What you made prevents Active Sync in my PC. What can I do to my PPC, because active sync sometimes opens itself when I turn on the phone...
Thanks for everything.

Million thanks... You are fast! Very fast indeed...
oh, no-one read my link? You could have had that key on the 5th october
btw, it's my fault for being obtuse. Looking at what I wrote, it's kind of random.
And I said it was a very old article....
sorry about that anyway thanks for that activesync when you want link, I remember reading that ages ago.
I did look for it where I thought I saw it last...on another site! No wonder I couldn't find it.
Thanks for the reg key fix. I use Exchange OTA, so I don't need to sync with the PC. I ran this registry key on my PC and I no longer get the popup to pair with my phone each time I plug it in. It still allows me to transfer files and access the phone via activesync, but with no annoying popup.

New HD2 , 5 typically good questions

Hello,
i've bought 1 HD2 and i've 5 questions to ask. Some should have already asked & answered, i'll read the entire HD2 topics in some days .
1 - I can't connect to my home WIFI. HD2 finds my network, and my router accepts HD2 Mac address. And i've already entered the password (i could have mistaken the password). Now there's a "wheel" always "turning" (searching? for the wifi network). What can i do to solve this?
2 - What can i do to make a complete backup of HD2?
3 - It's very easy to HD2 activate phone connection for internet, how to control this?
4 - What program should i use to really close programs?
5 - This is the most annoying one. Synchronizing with Outlook 2007 (with Windows 7) isn't correctly functioning ...
I've made a "inbox\folder X" with e-mails before 2009, and the others e-mails are in the "inbox" or in folders ("inbox\folder(s) A... B ...") inside it.
The idea was too synch everything without e-mails received or sent before 2009.
Results: 1st time it didn't synch all messages in "inbox" and "Sent", 2nt time it did't synch "inbox\folder(s) A... B...", neither "sent" and its subfolders too.
What can i do to solve the problem? Or should i use any 3rd party software?
Regards
1. Recheck the p/w...?!
2. PIM
3. Know there are apps out there, cant recall any names.
4. Taskmanager - its already installed.
5. 3rd party only. Activesync cannot sync subfolders. Try Pocketmirror.

1- Make sure you are typing the password correctly and that the access point is not filtering Mac Address. Make sure also that DHCP is enabled.
2- Download and install Sprite Backup on your mobile. You can find it on the Internet.
3- Make sure you disable the Auto update each application uses like weather, stocks etc.
4- Download the default Task Manager that will replace the HTC one. You will be able to close the applications by taping on the X at the top right corner.
5- Sorry I am not running Windows here so not much help.
Hi there. I'm equally new to this but found for question 4 to try this -
Navigate to Start/Settings then at the bottom select Menu/All Settings. Next click on System and scroll down til you see the icon Task Manager, now click & hold then let go ~ a window will pop up saying 'Move to Top'. Click on this and a copy of the Task Manager will be sent as the first item in the list when you next press Start.
This was copied from elsewhere so thanks to them and it works ok for me
Cheers........Mad Jock
Schooleydoo:
1 - i don't know what p/w stands for
2 - what is this software (/what site sells it)?
5 - Are you sure ActiveSync (*) doesn't syncronize subfolders? This is an error or a characteristic? Someone told me that this only happens because of compatibility problems with Windows 7 64 bits (which im using). Im going to try pocket mirror (*). Someone here speaked about PDASync, i tryed one version found on the internet... appeared C++ errors (something about "virtual functions"), and cleaned my caledar my luck is that i've done one backup imediatly before...
Xeon:
1 - i can verify DHCP in router, right?
2 - i'll try it, what is the difference between using a software like this an My Phone?
3 - Starting to use WM 6.5, don't know if i find all the places/tabs to disable (at least 3 i've disabled yesterday)
4 - From where do i download the default task manager and how do i install it?
Madjock:
4 - I've found precisely the same instruction and i'm using it. But if we can do it like on Windows it's better.
2 new questions (or not...):
- My phone is unlock. What is the difference between using 1.48 ROMs that HTC made available , running hardspl ou goldcard
- i'm constantly seeing a space error, my outlook e-mails made HD2 almost full...
-- could this be the origin of the active sync error that doesn't copy my inbox subfolders ?
---can i configure in outlook or in a 3rd party sw like pocket mirror (*) to use my 8gb card as a place to e-mails, to avoid using the HD2 internal memory?
TIA,
Richard
1 - check that you've entered your router password properly. Mine connects fine.
2 - PIMBackup backs your contacts up into a single file - it's a bit like MyPhone but not and online service, restores faster and backs up call logs too. Doesn't do other files. You can try SASHIMI too but that requries a bit of fiddling around to setup nicely. Once setup however it's quite good.
3 - the program's called NoData. or WMLongLife, as an alternative.
4 - default task manager is already under \Windows. Just look for exe something starting with "task"... I would suggest installing ShowCase 1.01b for closing apps instead. It's more finger friendly (wouldn't use the task switcher that comes with ShowCase though - it's nice but buggy imo). I actually use AEBPlus to assign longpress to the Windows key to bring up the default task manager - quite good.
5 - Check that you aren't running out of space in your Internal Storage on the HD2. HTC didn't leave much free space so if u have some massive emails I'd imagine it'll get full... however you should get a warning message when that happens. Which basically means you should either avoid syncing all your emails over to the HD2 or look for a way to sync emails onto your Storage Card. And Windows 7 uses "Windows Device Center" or something like that instead of ActiveSync...
6 - Hardspl isn't avaliable yet, but will allow you to flash any rom you like inc. custom roms. Goldcards allow you to flash Official htc roms of any language. If your phone is unlocked you should be able to flash 1.48 Rom of the same language as your current rom version without goldcard. Worth flashing since the 1.48 rom appears to give more free space than the 1.43 rom.
EDIT: Quick google of XDA shows a stack of links telling you how to redirect email storage to SD Card:
Registry edit method: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1421033&postcount=3
Apps method: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2317615&postcount=9
I had a similar problem with my HD2 when I first tried to connect it to my router but a soft reset fixed it (strangely). If you're sure your password is correct and your router isn't set to restrict access by MAC address then you could give this a try.
1. Sincerely, mine works fine. I'm using a router without password, but with MAC restrictions.
2. SpriteBackup / SPB Backup (don't remember if it's called as this) / PIMBackup
3. Modaco NoData will do the job!
4. You can download the default TaskManager to close the program while tapping X. Or you can use the HTC TaskManager (or eNatives Showcase) to close them after you've opened and backgrounded.
5. I never used the e-mail synchronization so I can't reply, but I'm sure that if you try to backup your data using PIMBackup, it'll backup all.

ad 5: YES, it syncs subfolders. go to Mobile Devices Centr on your PC, choose Mobile device settings - change settings of content sync - email - (wait for importing) - choose folders to sync.
Works for me with HD2, Win 7 Prof 32 bit. (basic settings is sync only Inbox, no subfolders)
