Messaging won't start - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario General

Sigh... Having some issues.
Before I start, here's the specs:
Cingular 8125
CID/SIM Unlocked
Service: Cingular
ROM: Molski's 2.26.10.2 AKU2.3
Radio: 02.47.11
Protocol 4.1.13.24
IPL/SPL: 2.26
The problem: At random, messaging just quit working all together. I havent installed anything new. I was able to send a text message this morning at 10AM and I tried opening up messaging today around 5:00pm and nothing happens. Messaging via Softkey, today screen, start menu, you name it... It doesn't work.
I've searched for about an hour both on this forum and google and I can't find any real solutions to this problem. I hope there is a fix out there and I just haven't found it.
I tried viewing processes in taskmanager while pressing the messaging softkey, and tmail.exe will appear in the processes list for about half a second then disappear. I viewed Windows\Messaging\ and there are a bunch of 0kb files there. The sms backup program included with Molski's rom won't work. It gives me the following error: "GetFolder: 0 error."
I'm guessing that some database went corrupt? Anyone have any feedback on this? Any fixes short of doing a hard reset? I'd like to avoid a hard reset because it's a major PITA to restore everything. How common is it to have to do hard resets if everything has been functioning properly with no tinkering? This 8125 is becoming a major headache for me. =\

Alright, I've found this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=269644&highlight=messaging+button+does
Apparently closing out tmail.exe will cause issues. I'm guessing this is related to using the "Close All" button that was included in Molski's rom. I'm not sure if the close all feature is available via pocketplus... If it is, I'd add tmail.exe to the exceptions list, but I have no clue where to find the settings for the "Close All" button.
Anyone have any idea?

I just had this happen to me today, is there a way to fix it?

Any fixes for this? I have read some people doing a hard restart, but I would rather not have to do that. Thanks.

For what it's worth, I had the same thing this week. Couldn't find anything simple anywhere. So..., I removed my 1G ram card. Messaging worked! I found that I had hundreds of texts in the various messaging folders and I deleted everything. So far, so good.
I noted that "running programs" shows only which folder is active in messenger, eg "text", "pop3", "sbc" or whatever you've named your services.
Oh, I'm using the WM5 messenging program that came standard. tmail? Hope this helps some other lost soul!

try format the device to refrish it

Hi,
I've been having the same problem with my Trinity, running the last Ax3l WM6 ROM (although I don't believe the ROM is at fault).
The messaging application simply stopped launching, be it from the menu shortcuts or the executable itself.
I've tried the SIM in another phone, which sends and recieves SMS OK.
After finding this post and reading suggestion the above, I tried removing the MMC and it started working again, and all my old messages were still there also. With the card back in, the problem returned.
I wasn't sure where (or why) the phone is storing SMS/messaging related stuff on my MMC card. The only thing i could find was an empty folder (no hidden or system files either):
\storage card\Inbox.mst.23423(random nos...)
tried renaming to OLD first, and all was fine again, so deleted it. weird.
Anyway, thought I'd add that in the hope it might help someone with the same issues

I had the same problem and followed these steps, it worked, Thanks for the advice.

@boma23
THANK YOU!!! Deleted the file soft reset and it's working again.
I think the file is created if you go into the messaging options and check the box that says "When available, use this storage card to store attachments"
I was about 5 seconds away from doing a hard reset when I stumbled upon this thread.

THANK YOU
I found this thread and tried it...It saved my day. I was about to have a fit!
Thanks again

SMS msgs getting wiped after SOFT reset

Only recently got my T-Mobile branded Vario direct from them brand new and I've noticed that after I perform a soft reset all my messages, regardless of whether they have been read or not, get wiped.
I've checked Deleted Items, Drafts, Inbox, Outbox and Sent Items folders and they are all empty! I can absolutely assure you that I did not delete any of the messages myself.
Thinking that I might of had some conflict with another piece of sofware I had installed I decided to perform a hard reset and get everything set back to T-Mobile factory defaults. After all the Extended-Rom branding stuff got installed I decided to leave the phone exactly as it was, no tweaking of any settings, no installing any extra apps, no active-syncing, no nothing - a fresh factory reset!
Then, I sent another text message to the Vario. It arrived and after I read it and confirmed that it was indeed in the Text Message Inbox folder I quit out of the message app and perform a soft reset. Guess what happened after it restarted? Yep, the text message has miraculously disappeared
Anybody else seen this happen?
Anyone care to comment? Please reply even if your text msgs DON'T get wiped as I'd like to find out whether it's normal or not.
not got a T-mobile ROM, i'm using the O2 one (and now the updated version) and have never lost text messages from a soft reset (only a hard reset)
Sry i cant help further
just started happening to me and i been using the 2.17 rom.. i noticed this yesterday it deleted like 5 msgs but i got my other ones there so i was like WTFD?
I've just had this on a Universal (Orange M5000) with the latest Orange ROMs.
Prior to this, I suddenly had days and days of delivery notifications come flooding in, although this may have been an issue with either Orange or another network provider.
hi for me its not the txt messages but all new files that is created on the sd card gets deleted an all deleted files reappears after a soft reset
m really bugged
if ne 1 knows whats the problem pls help me
thanks
Loosing SMs messages.
If you have received a SMS message and soft reset before closing POutlook then I have found that you do loose the message.
By closing, I mean really closing it - not just pucsing the X button.
Likewise if you have deleted a message or moved it then the message(s) come back.
It seems to be that POutlook doesn't commit the changes to it's database until you close the app - or switch accounts.
Charlie Grillo
That certainly seems to be the case with me, I was having trouble syncing with activesync, just dying each time I tried so in the end I hit the soft reset, I'm fairly certain that I still had outlook running at that point.
Actually, thinking about it, there were two batches of sms msgs, and I did end task on outlook after the first, so I can maybe understand that the second lot could be lost, but not the first?
Is there any way of validating the system databases?
The problem that I was having, disappearing SMS msgs, seems to have gone away and everything is still intact now even after multiple soft resets.
In case anyone else gets this strange behaviour, I can indeed confirm that POutlook.exe was indeed closed as I had also double checked the running programs list * to ensure no other processes were open that could conflict.
( * Start -> Settings -> System -> Memory ->Running Programs )
bbut also make sure tmail.exe is closed to.. get memmaid ull be suprised at all whats running.. the best thing to do is to use SmartSKey and make that close ur txt message app completelty!
poutlook.exe tmail.exe and sMSNserver.exe/pMSNserver.exe ...if these are open chances are ur sms/mms may be wiped after a soft-reset i make sure to sync my phone to pc and use jeyo outlook companion b4 a soft-reset

Reminders in Calendar /Tasks stopped working

on my XDA Exec (O2 ROM 1.30.162 WWE for last 2 months) these stopped working about 2wks ago....
Yes, in settings>personal>sounds and notification I have set for playing sounds etc etc etc...and yes, I set reminder when creating new appointments /tasks...
So...any idea why no longer working?????
It's a known "feature" of this OS. Use search for this problem with suggested solutions. None of these solutions worked for me (on my T-Mobile USA MDA).
I had to Hard Reset to get my notifications back. But I lost them again within 2 weeks. I will hard reset again whenever I get some free time.
When I ran into this same problem I also tried a couple solutions, MemMaid didn't work for me and I screwed up my device (lost the ability to ActiveSync) when I ignorantly deleted all sorts of stuff using the Scarey Bear Check Notifications tool. What did work for me was the trial version of SKTools, it has a delete duplicate notifications type tool. If the problem shows up again I'll just purchase SKTools.
I was the same problem a fem weeks ago, and my solutions was program Check Notifications. When I dowloaded this program a readed only about support for WM2003SE, but work on WM05 well.
I deleted automaticky every bad notifications in first time, but nothings happened a and my Qtek was still NO-SOUNDS :-(
I tried delete every RED notifications in check list, and I deleted every old notifications in this list in second time. I was delete this manually! After soft reset my QTEK 'again start talking '
here you have cab file for tring my solution

Great..........worked for me - I just deleted the red reminders twice (for some reason) and it started working again. Must be a corrupt remider or something.
Thanks for the pointers
Just some additional info for future reference.. I downloaded the CheckNotifications.CAB file (thanks for posting!) and removed all duplicates.. but still no reminders..
Eventually, I did the following, and I don't what fixed it but it may help others!
* Using CheckNotifications, deleted all duplicates
* Using CheckNotifications, deleted all references using Calendar.EXE
* Soft Reset
* Deleted Duplicates (again!)
Sync'd via ActiveSync, then whilst connected did the following:
* Removed ALL Calendar entries for the current month
* Entered a test notification
* Waited for the Notify to fire...
Success.
I think it was something to do with corrupt Calendar entry or some sort in my case; either way using the above fixed it for me, so may help someone else reading this in the future. (probably me, when it goes wrong 6 months down the line..!!)

smsengine error - no incoming texts!

Hi there,
Can anyone help me with an odd sms problem?
After installing some programs to try and back up my text messages from my xda exec, which were unsuccessful, I've since uninstalled them and now discovered I'm not recieiving any incoming text messages... only the network voicemail 901 messages ever get through, but whenever a text message comes in I get a dialogue appear saying
"smsengine.exe
The file 'smsengine' cannot be opened. Either it is not signed with a trusted certificate, or one of its components cannot be found. You might need to reinstall or restore this file."
when "ok" is clicked, the dialogue closes, then when the pocket outlook is opened I get a small dialogue box saying
"SendMyMessage
SendMessage failed.
TimeOut!"
Obviously I can't ever see what the message was, it just never gets displayed in Pocket Outlook (presumably due to the error above )
Any Ideas what I can do? is smsengine.exe a standard WM5 program, if so, can somebody find it on their machine, copy and email it to me, and tell me where to save it to?
Or do I need to muck about in the registry?
I can't reset my phone to factory defaults because I have some really, really really important text messages relating to my employment which was why I started this mucking about trying to back up the messages in the first place... so I'm really stuck now, and I'd really appreciate if someone could offer some advice on what the best approach would be.
hi,
I've heard of smsengine.exe afaik its not a standard wm5 file i'd say whatever programs you installed to backup are the cause of your problems.
I'd reinstall the programs and remove 1 at a time to see which is the cause
What programs did you install?
solved - thanks - any other sms backups that might work?
Thanks Deadmetal
Strangely I'd already tried uninstalling, with no luck, but tried reinstalling, then removing, and eventually the problem seems to have fixed itself using this proceedure. very odd!
The program I installed was smsOrganizer by zedsoft
http://www.zedsoft.net/
Which doesnt seem to work on the Exec for some reason, even though it says its WM2005 (which I presume is WM5 - if I'm wrong with this assumption it might explain why it messed it up <grin>)
Can anyone recommend a good (free) tool to backup sms messages under WM5 that I can use?
Thanks for the help
Derek
Ah! smsorganiser! Yeah I thought the software you had been using was that. I've had several problems using it but it does look a decent piece of software if the bugs ever get ironed out!
the problem keeps on!

HELP ME HAMNIN (and any one else with an answer)

my prior post was in regard to the 'red constant light of doom', and this is a semifollowup post. i recieved some suggestions as to what to do, one of which made alot of since.
im a heavy text message user, and i know the messages tend to stack up in the memory, which was the suggestion that my internal memory is running low, and to delete my text messages from last year. well i am using the "clear" function, but it was taking forever.... so then i tried highlighting and deleting, which at least i could see it working, but with 5000+ messages in the sent folder and 5000+ in the inbox, i could see wasnt going to work fast enough.
my only other options are either to do a memory clear, but that is saying will reset my device to factory conditions (now is this before or after i upgraded with the 2.26 tmo rom???) or actually just do a hard reset (which i dont want to do, cuz if i do that i might as well mess around with installing a WM6 rom)....
so any advice or suggestions??
I would have patients and let the device erase all of the text messages. Also, there is a registry tweak in the wiki to move email and attachments to the SD card. If you apply this tweak, you can store all of your messages there.
Update: the reg tweak only stores your mail, not sms, I just tried it.
Hardreset will restore your phone to the last ROM you've flashed/upgraded to.
Anyway, if you look hard enough (google or this forum), you ought to able to find the file responsible for storing all the SMS .. and I'm sure if you were to delete/rename this file and let the OS recreate this file, you are effectively erased all the SMS without hardreset.

Windows Mobile SMS Problem

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this so move the topic if necessary.
A few weeks back I bought an X1(Branded Dutch T-Mobile Version) and I've been having problems with the receiving of SMS'. My Today screen indicates there are new messages, eg. SMS \ MMS: 1 unread. But when I check my messages there's nothing there. I tried to see if it may be a false positive, by having a friend send me a text message, but the number did increase, and the message box was still empty. I tried reseting the rom, which obviously killed the messages, but new messages are still not getting through.
Anybody else experiencing the same problem? Anybody know what is going on? How can I recover the (invisible) messags?
Thanks a bunch
that's weird. uh, really weird. it's either YOU have a bad rom/phone software so better have it checked OR your not looking in your SMS/MMS inbox but your outlook inbox instead.

i had the same prob, someone sent me a text and the phone froze, when i turned it on had that message. the only way i found to get rid of it was to delete the message coversation with the person.
i had the same problem, only a hard reset solves the problem. after the hardreset everythink worked fine. some other people at the german xperia board got the same problem.
I tried to hard-reset to no avail. Deleting previous conversations doesn't help. Even SMS' from unknown contacts stay hidden. When I try to export my messages using PIM Backup 2.8 It shows that I have 2 'Text Messages' folders in the export root. One with the hidden(unread) messages. And one with the visible ones. When I exported the messages and reimported them, they stayed hidden. When I wrote a program to parse the PIM Backup exported file. I could see that the hidden messages get properly exported.
Any ideas?
Hearing that the German based roms have troubles too, could it be a reg setting that is wrong, something with localization? I really hate that I have a Dutch rom.
i had this problem i simply hard reset it and it was gone...if this didnt work then try reflashing the orignal rom
I just ran into the same issue.
Funny is that I did hard reset on not flashed orginall Dutch T-mobile X1 which was working good. Well now it is not :/
Tip for others looking for a quick workaround: use uiggmo light panell to read them. The only way I found so far.
I am flashing mine today. (Before I will hand it over due to case issue).
