EDGE on my DASH (smartphone 5.0) - Networking

Okay so im relativley new to this mobile internet stuff but my gprs connects through a proxy on my smartphone. Kind of like the tzones connects.. but i have a regional provider called Centennial Wireless.. ANYWAYS.. i can browse the web through internet explorer just fine.. but i CANNOT use any java apps with it. i DONT THINK i can use push email with it. and i cant use any messenger service with it. is there ANY work around for this annoyingness.?.. i just wonder bc i can access any webpage (wap or non wap) through INET explorer.. ALSO is there any other browser that i can use? i would LOVE to use opera mini.. but i dont think thats happening. let me know pleaseee

most providers block traffic on their proxy.. im on cingular and when i use their proxy'd connection i cant get out on java app's or IM's.. however cingular provides a connection that doesnt have the proxy, so you might want to check and see if there is another connection on your phone available that uses EDGE but not the proxy

I messed around with a few settings on my v635 (changes the port to 8080 and changed the type to HTTP.) and i got perfect connection.. i was able to access the web from java applications!!! so i know its possible now.. just how to enter the same setting on my DASH is the question now?.. here werer the exact setting on the v635.
Service type 1:Http (used to be wap)
Gateway IP 1: 066.099.231.135
Port 1: 8080 (used to be 9201)
SAME FOR PORT 2^
APN: mmspublicwap.centennialwireless.com
and i can access through java apps.. does this mean that the v635 isnt using a proxy and i need to somehow tke the proxy outta the dash? or no?

Free GPRS wap to view the net is this possible

I have read a few posts but dont fully understand.
I am in the UK and pay for Web GPRS but wap GPRS is free, Now i think i read some where where people had set up at home a sort of gateway using there home broadband service.
They have said that certain ports are blocked on a wap connection (so youu cant go on the net to view we pages) so they find a port that is not blocked and use that port and set it to goto here PC at home, and the "gateway" at home will send them back out onto the NET via there home PCs internet connection.
Sorry if this dose not make sence
Thanks
John
Interent through WAP
No. I don't know much about that. but I have tried to use internet though WAP. I used "wsp://" instat of "http://". It works for some internet pages. But it doesn't work for all web pages.
Where did you read about what you have send in the email before?
Do you have more information aobut how to use internet though WAP?
i found the info on the forum it was in a few different threads i will look and post the links to them
The T-mobile free wap allows tcp ports:
http 80, smtp 25, imap 143, pop3 110
So if you need https 443, run a squid web proxy on your home linux machine on port 110 and go to network settings on your pda and configure the http and "secure" proxies for your.home.com 110.
If you need other tcp ports like say nntp 119, run sshd on your home linux machine listening on port 143, then use pocketty on your pda to connect to your.home.com 143 and also set up port forwarding to forward localhost 119 to some.nntpserver.com 119, then configure your pda newsreader to read news on localhost 119. Set up similar port forwards for any other ports. The only problem is pocketty isn't free.

You linux programmers seem to have doors that dont exist for normal software users, I wish I could understand how to use it.
What are the connection settings we need to use in the U.S.? I found some info that says to use internet3.voicestream.com or wap.voicestream.com, but my phone doesn't connect. It immediately gives a me "modem disconnect" error message. Has anyone gotten this to work?
I got it!!
Nevermind... I got it to work. I had to call T-Mobile and have them activate the "free GPRS/WAP service" on my account. It took me 2 calls since the first tech said that you can't even use a wap browser on the Pocket PC Phone (yeah, right). I hung up with that tech and call them right back and got a person who knew what they were talking about. Once I had them activate it, it took about 20 minutes for it work (the tech told me it could take up to 24hrs.). Here's what I did on my phone.
Settings:
- Add new GPRS Connection
- Name the Connection to whatever you want
- Make sure to select "Celluar (GPRS)"
- Click "Next"
- Enter Access Point Name of: wap.voicestream.com
- Click "Next"
- No username or PW
- Click "Finish"
If you get on great. If you don't and recieve a "Modem Disconnect" error, you'll need to call CS and have them activate your account to use the free GPRS/WAP service. They say it's just for wap sites and to d/l pictures and ringtones from the T-Mobile site, but it works for most http sites as as well.

WAP and T-Mobile

Hi
ON my nokia I had wap access to check headlines and football scores. How do I enable the same facility on an XDA ?
You need to run a seperate WAP browser, like EZ WAP. Search the boards here for EZ WAP and you'll find links to places to get it. Once you have it, there's a great WAP config description for T-Mo at:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=3675
Hope this helps
I've tried following the steps given in several different threads for configuring this on my XDA but have been unsuccessful. I've been trying to use EZWap to configure it, but it cannot connect. I think its something to do with my network connections on my phone that just arent right. Can anyone walk me through setting up the actual network connection settings for WM2003? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
i installed the mms from the O2 uk rom... (from zip posted here somewhere)...
i get mm2 notifications, but i cant download them...
any ideas?
WAP using IE in WM2003
Supposedly IE in WM2003 has support for WAP browsing. However, when I set up a "TZONES" connection and set up the AP to ( wap.voicestream.com ) and the proxy to ( 216.155.165.50:9201 ), and I try to navigate to:
wap.myvoicestream.com
It no longer works. However, if I navigate to any "regular" www page, it comes up just fine. Has anyone else successfully been able to configure their WM2003 ( TMobile PPCPE ) to access their TZones via IE using the WAP connection/Proxy settings ?
I was thinking of installing EzWap 2.5 again, but during the install it said it was going to replace wapdrv.dll and I wasn't going to run the risk of overwriting a necessary file, so I exited the installation of ExWAP.
Anyone gotten this to work ???
[/b]
Eureka !!! You don't need EzWap or Klondike !!!
<Edited - It was LarryH from Horward Forums who originally helped me out with this...it was his idea to try out a different URL monicker. Thanks again Larry ! >
With LarryH's help, we've discovered that it IS possible to access T-Mobile's TZones pages once you've undergone the upgrade to WM2003 from T-Mobile's SITE.
After you set up your connection to use the WAP accesspoint:
wap.voicestream.com
Under Proxy Settings:
WAP: 216.155.165.50 port: 9201
SWAP: 216.155.165.50 port: 9203
You don't have to set the HTTP or SOCKS,
as TMobile doesn't support SOCKS, and the HTTP port ( 80 ) is already open on their gateway server.
To access your TZones homepage, just open IE, and enter:
wsp://wap.myvoicestream.com
apparently entering:
http://wap.myvoicestream.com
will confuse IE in WM2003 for PPC, and
it will say "Unable to find page".
Everyone, enjoy your TZones under WM2003.

but my MSN Messenger don't work
my MSN Messenger still don't work. I have set access point to wap.voicestream.com
do i need to set up something else? or purchase other data plans from tmobile?

I just tried that on my PPC PE and I was able to sign on to MSN Messenger. Are you sure you have the Connection you set up to access the proper proxy address and ports. Make sure you setup the user/password for your msn account properly, because if you type it in wrong, it won't let you log in.
Let me know if you run into any problems.

Awesome !!!
Now I can have MSN Messenger using T-Zones / WAP access. This is wonderful.
Now with just WAP, I have acesss to port 80 & 110 and MSM messenger.
Thanks a bunch!!!!

t-mobile UK ??
Does anyone know the WAP settings for t-mobile uk ?
OK my settings are:
cellular line GPRS
access point name: wap.voicestream.com
user name password and domain all blank
proxy settings this network connects to the net check
this network uses a proxy server to connect to the net checked
proxy server is 216.155.165.050
under the advanced part all but socks are set to same IP
WM2003
I connect to GPRS but it says page cannot be found
any ideas why?
figured it out and took out the proxy stuff and access the web now.
I would also like the uk settings and a fool proof step by step instruction, please.
Thanks for any guidance

T-Mobile US GPRS being wierd...only IE works

Hey all...so im using a little loop whole to use free tmobile internet via proxy settings...now i got the internet to work, but only IE works! i cant get online with any other program such has AIM, myweather app, or anything else, only IE goes online...anyone have this issue? or how to fix it? its driving me crazy!
could be they are blocking the ports used for such services
i dunno?...Live search is the other only program tht works online too...
i believe that it use port80 like browsers too
It uses port 8080, Using IM+ and setting the AIM port to 110 will allow you to connect, but remember it's only a few ports that are open and other programs might not have a setting to change ports for it to work with the Tzones proxy.
You can't (as yet) use 1 connection setting on the T-Mobile network using the T-Zones proxy workaround. I have been (tediously) using 2 connections.
(for internet)
T-Zones proxy
wap.voicestream.com
216.155.165.50:8080
(for mail)
T-Mobile Data
wap.voicestream.com
**no proxy settings**
I've been searching for a way to set up one connection to use which would automatically bypass and use a second connection if connectivity couldn't be established. No one seems to have an answer for this, but i'd love it if someone could figure it out!
I'm waiting as well...
I aked the same question and still waiting http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=340945
This happened after I flashed the latest TMO ROM, prior to that I had one connection for all my internet apps. Now my weather, and email don't need a proxy but PIE and Live search do what has changed?

Palringo Tweaker

Hey all
I have been using Palringo for a while now and I was tired of waiting for them to add a way where I could use a proxy server (T-Zones) or Wifi.
In order to do this you would have to access the registry and some users don't want to do that. So I created a quick application to take care of this.
I hope it's useful for someone.
This application requires .NET 3.5
UPDATED:
I found a minor UI update issue.
thanks...
I'll give it a look, thanks!
i tried it and now i cant connect to palringo lol...not sure if have cf net 3.5 tho, i think i have only 2.0 NET version

That's strange. All the application does is set the registry settings that palringo uses to connect through a proxy server.
Are you able to access the registry?
If so locate the following:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Parlingo\Settings] (These are the values used for US T-Zones Proxy)
Key="Connection/Proxy/Host" Value="216.155.165.50"
Key=Connection/Proxy/Port" Value="8080"
Key="Connection/Proxy/Type" Value="1"
NOTE: (The above settings are for US T-Zones Proxy only)
You should see these settings. If you set "Connection/Proxy/Type" ="0" That will allow you to use your Wifi connection.
^thanx i'll try that fix when im not lazy , i don't really use palringo much
can u make so that i can enter a proxy usernameassword inputs???
do u think ur prog will make palringo connect if it uses the wap port 80 to connect?
i can only surf the goam.com rogers APN thru a proxy server and i don't think palringo can connect

You don't need the wap user/pass on goam.com for the proxy.
Ip address : 172.25.0.107
Port : 80

If you are using a proxy server that uses port 80, all you need to do is set the port to 80 and set the host address of your proxy server and your good to go. Palringo will use your predefined connection to access the internet which will handle your connection to the proxy server.
Just wondering whether anyone is able to get it to work with Rogers goam.com APN?
I have created the 3 new keys in the registry, and I tried all the combinations of different ports and proxy type.
If anyone is able to get it to work, can you please post your setup here?
Thanks!

Using a Proxy Connection

Hello.
I have a HTC Touch (Elfin) and have recently gave up my option for 10MB Mobile Internet for a Vodafon Live option with 500MB included.
I realised then that the Vodafone Live connection implies using a http/wap proxy wich will only allow internet acces for the web browser (Internet Explorer as well as Opera or Opera Mini work fine) but not for other applications like Instant Messenger Clients, Games or other similar.
I would like to know first of all if there is a way of tricking that proxy connection so I can be able to use other applications with online functionality.
Secondly, if that is not possible (as I suspect) I would like to ask if there are other applications (besides internet browsers) that could youse a http connection for their purpose. Most important would be an Instant Messaging one with Yahoo protocol support.
Thank you for your help.
edit:
In case it matters, this aplies to Vodafone Romania.
For Vodafine Live, the apn is live.vodafone.com (user live, pass vodafone) and the proxy are only defined for http (with 8080 port) and wap (with 9201 port). Secure wap and socks proxy are undefined so probably cannot be used/
Same problem here. Help would be very apreciated to make aplications like outlook , messenger or VNC client to work with http proxy conection.
@glumetzu : incearca shmessenger , e facut de romani si merge pe Java
i have same issue, but there is a workaround kinda...
i came back to romania now to visit family and i got a sim card, number and prepaid data service with vodafone.
my apn is live.pre.vodafone.com, but uses the same user/pass and proxy settings and suggested above.
i noticed that once i connected with microsoft rdp, it wouldnt work. nor would my internet video security cameras from home, which all use different ports.
now here is the strange bit. using another apn without a proxy worked fine on the phone itself. i forget which one it was, and will not test now to find out. it was either live.vodafone.ro or live.vodafome.com but without using the proxy settings. it worked for me no problem. the problem was once i connected to the laptop to use the usb internet sharing. i took the money from the voice phone balance and after a few hours i was disconnected. both data and calls couldnt be made since the balance was -1.19 euro lol
anyways, point is there is an apn settings that seems to work on the phone only without limits in regards to ports or proxies. this worked fine without killing my account balance. it was only once i connected with the laptop that it killed it.
i'm currently researching on how the network gateways are able to detect this.
however using the proxy server with the apn live.pre.vodafone.com i am able to use my full 250mb package from the laptop without affecting the voice package account balance, not sure how or why this works but i have confirmed this in real-time while at a vodafone store in cluj. the sales lady had access to monitor voice and data usage for my account and we tested using the apn and proxy with the laptop. it didnt affect the voice plan money.
so for a quick answer, you can use a laptop and tether the connection. but be careful and double check ur balance after u download a test file using the laptop, just to make sure it wont kill ur account balance.
also, it works now. but for how long? more research is needed and maybe i need to play around with programs like ztunnel or an http proxy app that can tunnel ALL active connections from port to port and vpn through my home network. that would make it more secure and less likely to be picked up by the isp since they would only see port 80 activity going to one place all the time....
