Scenario 1
I would go for Wifi access because I do not have a good Data Contract and only use GPRS/3G when I really have to on my travels. In which case Vario II (particularly as I already have a navigation system for in vehicle and when walking I don't really need it) GPS can be added if yiu really must.
Scenario 2
If however you have a good cost effective data tarriff then Wifi is not nearly so important. Also if you like wifi cos you can access your PC then you can still do this over GPRS connection using some third party software. In this case Compact 3 reasonable but no 3G although you get GPS

Xda IIi - XDA IIs or MDA? Please help

Hi there,
I need some urgent advise:
I have an XDA II from O2 and I now can get a new device from O2 as contract upgrade.
The options are XDAIIs or XDAIIi, alternatively I can dump O2 and make a contract with Tmobile for the MDA(compact), this last option is a bit of a pain though, because most people I call have O2 and also my international calls are cheaper with O2.
I don't use XDA very much as you do and hardly mess up with sw or upgrades. I mainly use it to call, take pictures/videos, watch movies, internet and for remembering appointments...
If it is fast enough I'd like to use it (via wi-fi) to surf the net with my laptop(as I don't have a landline), but I don't know if this is possible...
Now, question is: which one do you suggest me to get? I have to get it by the 30th of july...
Thanks guys!
Gio
Well the MDA compact doesn't have wifi so that might help your descision...
and also would depend on if you would use the keyboard on s
personaly i think that GPRS is way too slow for my temperament
if i wanted to surf from a laptop i would get a 3g phone like the htc universal of cause that will not be out by 30th
thanks.
I don't think I'd use the keyboard as it's probably easier to use the on screen one, also the keyboard feels like it's a bit loose and I'm afraid it might open on its own.
Only good thing I see on the IIs is the quadband that the other doesn't have...

JASJAR or XDA EXEC?

hey guys which should i get cant decide, i dont like the name jasjar but i like the colour.
also is there a way of swapping between 3G and GPRS if i want to reguardless of whether your in a 3G area or not because i get very cheep gprs and might wanna use it even if im in a 3G area. thanks
Neckarb
I had the same dilema and went with the jas jar for several reasons.
1) no o2 commitment (they are, in my personal experince, rubbish in so many ways)
2) cool grey case.
3) imate release rom updates on a regular basis, o2 release one every four thousand years, if your lucky.
4) the jas jar was available sooner
I think you'll find that youll pay the same rate per mb regardless of whether you are using the umts (3g) or edge(2.5g/gprs) networks. you're just liable to use it up faster on umts becaue of the higher data rate! you can force it not to use umts if you want tho'.
Maybe neckarb is on one of the old BT Cellent Genie tariffs where GPRS may cost almost nothing?

that i be. and so am interested on o2 for that sole reason, the other problem im having is i wanna pay abouy £400-£500 (either sim free) or preferable including a 12month contract but cannot find the jasjar for that price even though i found the exec for it so again aaah!

Yes you can force the Universal into GSM mode under settings/phone/Band...There you select GSM instead of 'Auto' under 'Select your network'. Apparently it saves you loads of battery power too as UMTS is power hungry.
Regards
cheers for that mate, can the xda exec be reflashed with an imate rom as im a member of club imate and would love to get the rom updates.
asking for problems
From what i have read from other o2 devices with Imate roms, its is problematic.
get an universal rom first, that way if the imate rom gives your grief, the change back is less trouble.
Please post your findings, it would be interesting.
Can anyone else clarify this? I was intending to get the O2 XDA Exec, but with such a new device and new OS, it's bound to need a ROM upgrade or two. I was looking on the O2 site for ROM upgrades to any of their other XDA devices but couldn't find any which is not a good sign.
My understanding is that i-mate ROM updates will not work on the O2 XDA Exec, in which case I reckon the money saved on an Exec against a Jasjar will not be worth it.
They should be the same hardware, so you could get the slick looking XDA Exec and put the imate ROM on.
it would be great if i could, becuase i found the xda exec £150 cheeper than the jasjar but i love my imate rom updates, has anyone sucsessfully flashed the xda exec or mda pro with the imate jasjar roms?

Going from XDA2 to Tmobile Vario

I have an XDA2 and have been happy with it on the whole. I use a varied apps from Excel, to POP3 mail, to wired GPS with OziExplorer, to textbook readers etc.
I would quite like WiFi, and the Magician / vario looks like it will do all and more. I recently had a flat battery and needed a re-install :-(
What are the main plus and minus points moving from an XDA2. Is the smaller screen a pain, or do you just get used to it?
Could I use a blue tooth GPS easily or are they too unreliable?
My friend went from an XDA2 to a Vario and I haven't heard him complain yet.
I went from an MDA3 to a Pro and sometimes think the Vario would have been the better choice.
He uses TT5(Bluetooth) with his Vario without problems.
WiFi is great and the new Web n Walk has unlimited allowance.
Moving to Vario
I moved from a XDAIIs (Blue Angel) to a Vario and it is far better.
No need to panic if you accidentally run out of battery as it is all safe from data loss (being stored in flash - not ram).
I used a BT GPS with my blue angel and now with the Vario - with no problems on either. I also had a wired GPS for the BA - which, of course, is of no use to me at all now!
You get used to the screen being smaller - it isn't a problem.
Plus the web'n'walk plan is fantastic - although I signed up early and only got the 40Mb allowance - not unlimited as they are doing now... with 25% off the line rental also... it makes a good deal... dunno if you can get a vario with thie new web'n'walk deal though !!
Hi,
I hve a friend that has got the web and walk tariff only yesterday, although I belive its down to the contract/retailer to decide based upon their targets I guess.........Im sure you will be very happy with it though.
Cheers!
Bryson
I have a T-Mobile Vario. It was dog slow and unreliable when I got it, but after flashing it with the latest qtec rom, It's fast and rock solid.

Pocket Remote Desktop on Wizard

I'm planning to buy a T-Mobile MDA - it's the Vario here, in the US - for mostly its WiFi, SKype and Remote Desktop. I saw in another thread that Skype just works fine - perhaps with a modest OC? - but I'm not sure how well this 200MHz TI CPU will handle encrypted RDP connections... any feedback would be appreciated!

I use pc anywhere v.12 pocket pcc addon and it works fantastic, even w/out OCing.
Remotely Anywhere, works also, I am using it sometimes over gprs. Install remotely Anywhere on your computer and log in with PIE http://someadress:someport and it wil asking about downloading a plugin.
It can also be used via IE and Firefox on a desktop.

Great news, thanks. Now only if I could decide to go ahead and buy it or wait for Vario II a few weeks...
actually, from the specs, i think the MDA is better than the MDA 2. and it isn't the Vario in the US, it is just the normal t-mobile MDA... it is the Vario in Europe.

? In terms of what? AFAIK MDA II has a faster CPU, supports HSDPA... sounds more future-proof to me.

I know, I just wanted to make it clear.
I doubt the mda 2 will be released in the u.s anytime soon. cingular is still working on their hsdpa service and tmobile hasn't even started rolling 3G out. so I think its best if u just buy the mda for now.

Yeah, let's just call it advanced EDGE...
And it's not my opinion only: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1895,1997919,00.asp

Right, it is true and I don't expect TMO will be offering any 3.5G here anytime soon - earliest date is probably next Spring - but keep in mind I'm planning to keep this 'phone' for 2 years or so, as I always did...

"3" network on o2 branded Universal

I have an o2 branded (hardware and software) XDA Exec (it's unlocked). My current contract is coming to an end, so I am looking for a new contract. I am thinking about buying a contract with 3. However, I would like to keep my current phone even if the new contract includes a phone. My question is: can I put the sim in my XDA Exec? What functionality would I be able to expect? Would I be able to make phone calls, send and recieve text messages, make video calls, send and recieve picture messages etc.?
Yep, works fine, i've used my 3 sim before! Just need to add the correct connection details for the 3 portal etc.
though the three network will work . i will not recommend it because three network states do not use anyother phone with there sim cards.
Also my nokia 6230i and nokia 3220 both were working with three but they blocked them after two weeks.
so think before you use it;...
3 now have the Qtek version of Exec on their network so theres no reason why you cant use your exec now. I've never had a problem with another 3G phone on the network. The only problem that sometimes seems to occur is when the 3G SIM is put in a non 3G phone - itworks for a while then after draining too much power (as 3G SIM is higher rating than GPRS SIM) it kills the phone.... Why not just pop into a 3 shop though or call customer services?
i'm trying to dig out connection details to three. Could anybody shed some light? I've x-series addon and it would be nice if i can get it on my universal
thanks, sorted out! excellent one, i'm able to use msn messenger & web browsing. now it's time to check skype
Edit:SKYPE also works perfectly.

Well I have just been speaking to 3 and they will NOT support any non 3 handset nor will they give out sms, mms, or internet settings, morever if they discover that you are using a NON 3 handset then they will suspend service immediately... their customer service is absolute crap... major row on phone vowing never to return or continue to spend in excess of 100 GBp each month as pay as you go customer
Hi,
I have been using 3 sim for 9 months now. U can use video calling , internet etc without any problems.

Hi, Can u share your 3 settings for GPRS , MMs and web browsing, please . I am on 3 and have not been able to get the gprs working , nor the MMS. Thus can't get on to the net or msn etc on my O2 XDA Exec. Just for the info I have been using 3Sim on this for the past 7 months no problems with the phone functionality.
Thanx in advance
Tunndoc
Can anybody help with this query? I'd be interested to know too.
Thanks
you might find http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-266774.html useful it shows the settings.
I am on 3 with a XDA Exec and I can get almost all functionality aside from buying stuff from 3 online as it doesn't have the correct root certificates from 3 (and 3 never had the exec as a phone anyways!)
