I'm planning to buy a T-Mobile MDA - it's the Vario here, in the US - for mostly its WiFi, SKype and Remote Desktop. I saw in another thread that Skype just works fine - perhaps with a modest OC? - but I'm not sure how well this 200MHz TI CPU will handle encrypted RDP connections... any feedback would be appreciated!

I use pc anywhere v.12 pocket pcc addon and it works fantastic, even w/out OCing.
Remotely Anywhere, works also, I am using it sometimes over gprs. Install remotely Anywhere on your computer and log in with PIE http://someadress:someport and it wil asking about downloading a plugin.
It can also be used via IE and Firefox on a desktop.

Great news, thanks. Now only if I could decide to go ahead and buy it or wait for Vario II a few weeks...
actually, from the specs, i think the MDA is better than the MDA 2. and it isn't the Vario in the US, it is just the normal t-mobile MDA... it is the Vario in Europe.

? In terms of what? AFAIK MDA II has a faster CPU, supports HSDPA... sounds more future-proof to me.

I know, I just wanted to make it clear.
I doubt the mda 2 will be released in the u.s anytime soon. cingular is still working on their hsdpa service and tmobile hasn't even started rolling 3G out. so I think its best if u just buy the mda for now.

Yeah, let's just call it advanced EDGE...

Right, it is true and I don't expect TMO will be offering any 3.5G here anytime soon - earliest date is probably next Spring - but keep in mind I'm planning to keep this 'phone' for 2 years or so, as I always did...

Hi there,
I need some urgent advise:
I have an XDA II from O2 and I now can get a new device from O2 as contract upgrade.
The options are XDAIIs or XDAIIi, alternatively I can dump O2 and make a contract with Tmobile for the MDA(compact), this last option is a bit of a pain though, because most people I call have O2 and also my international calls are cheaper with O2.
I don't use XDA very much as you do and hardly mess up with sw or upgrades. I mainly use it to call, take pictures/videos, watch movies, internet and for remembering appointments...
If it is fast enough I'd like to use it (via wi-fi) to surf the net with my laptop(as I don't have a landline), but I don't know if this is possible...
Now, question is: which one do you suggest me to get? I have to get it by the 30th of july...
Thanks guys!
Gio
Well the MDA compact doesn't have wifi so that might help your descision...
and also would depend on if you would use the keyboard on s
personaly i think that GPRS is way too slow for my temperament
if i wanted to surf from a laptop i would get a 3g phone like the htc universal of cause that will not be out by 30th
thanks.
I don't think I'd use the keyboard as it's probably easier to use the on screen one, also the keyboard feels like it's a bit loose and I'm afraid it might open on its own.
Only good thing I see on the IIs is the quadband that the other doesn't have...
Hi m8es,
just thinking about buying a new MDA, wondering if MDA Pro would be the right device for
- A few short phone calls a day
- UMTS (www and EMail)
- mobile Office
and so on...
What do you think about your universal?
i don't have it, but i'd buy it because of the UMTS, which i cannot use on my Hima... (
buzz
Yes, I'd buy it again. I'm convinced that most of the issues it has are due to WM5.0. If I hadn't bought this I would have upgraded my Dell Axim X50v to WM5.0 and run into the same issues anyway. (As it stands I'm keeping that one as a back up still on WM2003se.)
The bottom line is that the Universal does everything I want it to do and it's all in one. The size/weight has not been an issue to me at all.
A happy Jasjar owner.
Jasjar / Univesal
Perhaps not:
My bigger disappointment is the Internet Explores, cannot make bank transactions.

But really that's a Windows Mobile and Internet Explorer issue, isn't it? I think for any WM5.0 device we'll have to wait for a better browser to be developed...Minimo or a WM5.0 compatible NetFront.
The weird thing is, with my old PDA I couldn't get to my bank account with IE, but with the Jasjar (and IE) I can. I have no clue why.
May be if the Price is bit resonable... Still its saling in here about 1200$ which is too much for universal.
I'm looking to purchase this, most likely as the T-mobile MDA.
My question is... can this phone do Skype well? Some posts say it does it well, others say that Skype doesn't run at all, so its sort of like asking 3 people, getting four answers.
Thanks very much in advance.
Skype requires at least 300 Mhz CPU and the Wizard has 195 Mhz only. I have tried Skype on my QTek 9100 with AKU2 (using the skype low-cpu build) and the phone comes into a crawl when you are on a call with Skype. It's just that Skype is NOT an optimized ARM application (in reality it is nothing but a quick port) and so it takes away all the CPU, and even then it is not enough to encode/decode full speed and so the voice coming through is really grabbled.
I personally find Skype unusable on the Wizard devices. You need a faster CPU for it. Your alternatives are:
1. Email Skype and tell them to optimize the damn thing.
2. Use SJPhone instead which supports all SIP-based VoIP services after a bit of configuration (e.g. Gizmo, Ekiga, Stanaphone, Vonage etc)
3. Wait for the HTC Hermes phone which has a 416 Mhz CPU.
Thanks for the information.
Its a tough choice here. Do I purchase a HTC Wizard from T-Mobile now, and overclock it to 240mhz, or do I wait for T-Mobile to spit out the Hermes here in the States? Since the US seems the last place that cool phones appear, it may be '07 before the Hermes hits the T-Mobile catalog.
If it doesn't have to be Skype
SJPhone works fine without overclocking. Overclocking, of course, isn't a big deal.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=36573
using Skype on my I-mate K-Jam on my own wireless network with no problems at all as long as i dont have any other applications running too.
Skype works fine if you overclock with OMAPCLOCK. I have it automatically overclock to 250 when I launch skype and it works great.

Yep 240 overclock automatically here and it works just fine. VOIP etc

One thing I don't understand here in USA, is why people only get phones that their carriers are offering and they don't buy unlocked phones. Sure, you will have to do a 10-minute configuration for GPRS and MMS, but other than that, an unlocked phone would work just fine. And you will get it immediately after shipping!
Skype works cool on qtek9100 aku2 rom. Not sure if I wasnt doing it properly but in the original stock qtek rom 9/22/05 didnt work quite well when I overclocked and used skype. With aku2 rom its much better when I overclock to same speed as earlier.

Now you have asked the right question. I come from India and currently here in states. I really get mad to see how cingular/tmobile rob the junta (common man). They take the original s/w, tweak it to lock important features and then sell the features by asking you to pay more money for that. thats bad.
So what if they give phones at cheap rates. Personally I would prefer paying a little extra and not be their slave.
Been waiting for this git for AGES :-

I'm going to install it later on tonight !!!!!!!!!!!!
ahh thats good......
I was disappointed that my ROM rip didn't achieve what I had hoped, but now you get the full monty!!
Cool. Any idea's what been tweaked, added, fixed etc?
Anyone tried this yet? Any perfomance boosts?
Also, does anyone have any links to any more info on the update?
this is a silly question, but i keep getting confused. Are the "vario" devices the same as the "MDA" in the US? i have the US T-Mobile "MDA" but not sure if it is a VARIO or VARIO PRO, I, II, etc.
i'd like to download the official tmo rom for my device with msfp but so far i can't find it, so i'm just using one of the custom roms for now.
second question, the http://t-mobile.iris-global.com website, is there an equivalent US website?
thanks.
man did a hard reset last night, will have to do one tonight too!!! well soods law!!!
well, just done mine, and the first thing it noticed is that the battery icon in teh top right is now green, where as it was white like the otehr icons. Any idea how to change it back, it looks ugly!
why am i still seeing
RUU_Prodigy_1060204_105_11210_TMO_UK_Ship.exe?
very strange, even when i click download its the above file.
im not to bothered really anyway, im happy with the Mr Clean 2.3 rom for the moment!

Just got off the phone with T-mobile US tech support and the answer is NO. The update is only for UK and German T-mobile users. T-mobile US will NOT support the update. However, the tech told me they are testing the new OS update for US, but there isn't a release date set as yet.
BTW the MDA in US is called MDA II or HTC or I-mate something...
I have just upgraded to the new ROM and the other problem I've found so far is that the camera seems to ignore the 'night' mode now and just treats it like 'auto' mode, i.e. pictures taken indoors are practically black.
DAMN and still no support for AKU2 BB Connect..........wtf
does anyone know why they have pulled the update and has anyone downloaded it and can put the file on the FTP? email if you do [email protected]
Edit : Just came back on

There actually will be a BB Connect update, but not before end of july 2006
if i do this update will i be able to restore my settings etc. from an SBP backup or will i have to set everything up again by hand?
also is the sound quality in calls any better with this update?
cheers.
i think something is different cus i did that and it did not like it, so have to start from the start again
Is this the AKU2 update?

If anyone can suggest a fix for this problem I'd very much appreciate it. It's like it's ignoring whatever exposure settings it has :?
@bryanparke: as a wiseman once said, the only silly question is the one not asked!
The T-mobile US MDA is indeed the equivalent of the european MDA Vario.
They are both based on the wizard design by HTC.
@everyone else: Now that t-mobile have released the AKU2 rom, lets see how much they charge for the privilege of using it. Lets Hope it's cheaper than orange!

Huh ... it's a free download.
not the download, the service - orange have set their roms so the push email goes through another APN so they can charge you extra for the privilege of push email!
I don't see how they can differentiate however the only thing I can think of is if you were to be using orange e-mail ... if you have access to an exchange 2003 sp2 server (or online equivalent) then wouldn't it just be a gprs connection.
I've had my O2 Exec since Feb this year and its fab. Way better than the mobile messenger iPAQs that I had previously.
One thing that is bugging me though is the poor performance of the GPRS/UMTS connection I get - regardless of where I am at the time.
Say I open Opera (but not limited to) and request a website. It initially loads some of the page and then the GPRS connection drops and then says there's a problem with the modem message. If I then refresh the request for the page it connects and loads a bit more.... This happens with IE on the phone too.
I thought this 3G network thing was supposed to be way better than previous offerings... doesn't seem like it to me.
hi, I am havin simillar problem with GPRS speed.I'm using mda pro and the gprs is really slow. when trying to load a website it takes ages and happens not to load at all. once the desired website is loaded then the navigation within the website and speed is good. I think is a mda pro (universal issue) cos I have just upgraded from mda vario (htc wixard) and I must admit the wizard gprs performance is way batter. is there any way to speed up the uni and gprs problem.
cheers, cudo
could be dependent on signal and the quality of the service... i've never had such problems on mine. 3G works well especially when downloading emails
Yes I am another one with this issue and it has followed me with 4 units so I now know it is a Universal problem. I have just upgraded to a TyTN last week and used all my sim cards, Vodaphone, o2 and Tmobile and they all make the Universal look like a dialup.
but I wonder why is it working this way thtat onced a website is loaded and I navigate within this website then the speed is ok but when I try to load different address I have low speed again? will changing the rom help?

Sounds like a problem with dns. No idea what you could do to improve that.
Can anyone recommend a better ROM as opposed to the O2 one?
The issue for me is constant disconnections, not the speed.
I also have the problem of poor UMTS speed on T-Mobile. In fact GPRS is quicker.
Would a more generic rom such as Qtek or Imate work better or is it the hardware that is rubbish ?
Thanks
