Best Map Program OR GPS?

Does anyone know of the best mapping software that i can use while on the road, so I don't have to connect to the internet or gprs.
Also is the cingular 8125 GPS compatible, what service does it use?

No onboard GPS...
As far as an installed app I use PocketStreets.
If I have Inet Access I just use Google www.google.com/gmm/

i use copilot 6 for ppc for onroad satnav and memorymap for off road gps guidance
both require a gps reciever which you are best off getting as a bluetooth one.
but im in the UK, might not be the best options for your country

i use iguidance by inav. Did a lot of research on bluetooth recievers as well and settled on the Globalsat BT 338. (Sirf III)
The mapping software is excellent and accurate. I also looked at Copilot but it was $170 instead of $100 for iguidance. Also, it could use a bit more processing power. The inav software is one of the smallest footprint gps software but still very full featured.
I'm very happy with it.

isn't there a program that I can download that install maps by state or the USA, because i never know when I'll need it. I don't want to just search small maps using pocketstreets...

i have a program, called GIS RUssa. it is very handy, but expensive. may be someone has a keygen for it?

unfortunately that metro prog is only for the bus system but is there another program out there that actually does from point a to point b like mapquest or something like that

I have the Belkin variant of this software with a Belkin GPS (rebadged Fortuna Clip-on), but I haven't installed the software on the MDA yet. It has been installed on my Ipaq h2215 for two years and works very well. This software is rebadged by many resellers, including iNav, PrymeNav, and is used in numerous automotive applications.
But the version I have (1.1) is supposedly not compatible with WM5, according to iNav anyway, and reportedly only 2.1.3 or higher will work. When I approached iNav they suggested waiting until late June or early July, as a new version (v3) will be introduced. Since there is a 30-day window for free upgrades, buying now would require a paid upgrade to v3. This is the route I am going to take, as I can do without the GPS for six more weeks.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Tom Tom. I've been using it on a Palm device and now just moved over to the MDA Vario and it works great on the Vario. I've only done approx 45,000 miles using Tom Tom over the last 19 months, and it has not once got me lost. To me it has been worth every penny. I use a Holux GPSlim 236 BT receiver which is excellent.

Im new to this gps things. So i need some type of bluetooth receiver to hook up to my wizard? Also when I get this software and device do I need to pay for satellite fees or anythign or is this map stuff free when I make the initial purchase?

Yes, you need a Bluetooth GPS receiver. One of the best is Holux GPSlim236 or Globalstat BT338. I have the Holux & can highly recommend it.
If you buy for example Tom Tom, which again I highly recommend, you get the maps as well, but depending on the package, you can buy it with Tom Tom's Bluetooth receiver which is also very good.
There are no other fees. Unless you want to upgrade your maps at a later date. No map from ANY sat nav supplier will ever be 100% accurate.
The wizard does not work with wired GPS devices. But will work with a bluetooth headset/carkit as well as a bluetooth GPS receiver at the same time.

GoldLantern bluetooth GPS
I bought a GoldLantern bluetooth GPS receiver, it came with a download of "free" Mapopolis software - but thats where they get ya - the software is free but the maps definitely are not. However for a hundred bucks the maps seem to be pretty detailed. I have been using the demo version of the maps that expire after some number of days because my travel habits simply aren't that repetitive but I may eventually buy the subscription to all the North American maps.
Costs? Well, the MDA naturally which was about $370 with AZ taxes. $149 for the GPS receiver at Fry's Electronics (i paid too much but had to have it "now"). about $70 for a mini-SD 1GB card (also too much but had to have it "now") to store the maps. I haven't bought the maps yet and the GPS receiver is not "tied" to the application you use to navigate, I still might do TomTom but actually sorta like Mapopolis...
Performance is reasonably good provided Mapopolis is the only thing running. It takes the GPS receiver a minute or two to get a fix on your position.
I've used it in Phoenix, San Diego/Orange/LA counties in CA, and Seattle. In Phoenix its more of a convenience than anything else since I live here and don't necessarily need a GPS to navigate all the time, but it made business travel an absolute joy. No more trying to decipher the under-detailed rent-a-car map they give you along with the blank look when you ask if they know where your nationally known name brand hotel is.
In Seattle it was an absolute joy to use, I went on citysearch and figured out what kind of food I was going to eat that evening without any regard to navigational concerns. I had the mapping layers for King and Pierce counties loaded and Mapopolis even "knew" the names of some non-chain locally owned places that I'd been to in the past but hadn't a clue how to get to. The directions were accurate although the machine pronunciation of some of the street names was a little hilarious and it told me about turns in a timely fashion.
In Southern California I bumped into some limitations, probably becaue my usage pattern was a little different on those trips. I had LA/OC/SD counties loaded in memory the whole time so that could also have impacted performance and I was doing enough driving that I was also using my XM Roady2 for music and traffic updates. The XM (or Sirius) might be a relevant factor because the frequency band used by XM/Sirius is fairly close to Bluetooth, or 802.11b for that matter. All I can say is this: listening to XM and occasionally talking on my bluetooth headset at the same time, Mapopolis occasionally did NOT keep up with turns. At one point along I-5 south of San Diego it got confused and thought I was on surface streets which made for some interesting, if rapid, verbal directions from it. I think the factor was more the use of the bluetooth headset at the same time because once i ended the phone conversation mapopolis perked right back up performance-wise.
The battery life running mapopolis and bluetooth constantly - as well as the constant fascination with wanting to see my speed and direction causing the screen backlight to be on, caused the battery to drain very quickly - like 3 hours of usage had the battery almost 75 percent drained.
It's a good combination, but for the less technically inclined (and god help someone non-techie who buys a t-mobile mda...) the $500 garmin dashboard wart will do the GPS bit equally well without a steep learning curve. The learning curve to get this set up was near vertical but well worth it if you have the patience to fiddle with it. I.E. if you struggle a bit with your MDA, bluetooth GPS is not for you! Its also not something to learn how to use ON a trip, you definitely want to get the hang of it in your own local area before you put your complete trust in it in an unfamiliar place.

GPS - any suggestions?

Loving my new O2 XDA Mini S, and am gonna get GPS SatNav thingy for it - I can get a 2GB Mini SD card for £25, but can someone recommend a good GPS Bluetooth receiver that works well with it (I'm in the UK). Is sirfIII better than sirfII chips? Do I need 32 channel or is 16 fine?
Also what software do you guys recommend? TomTom? iGuidance? iGo? All I'm really interested in something with spoken directions and something that lets me type in 2 post codes and Go!
What version of TomTom is applicable to the XDA Mini? TomTom Mobile? TomTom Navigator?
Is 6 worthwhile or is 5.21 ok?
Is it easy to install?

As far as GPS chipsets go, I think the SirfstarIII is better but I can't be sure.
I always got on very well with a 16 channel BT GPS before it broke so dont be fooled by loads of hype about how many channels it has.
More channels does mean it can lock on to more at once but it isn't absolutely necessary.
Tomtom 5.21 is good enough but I feel personally that 6 is better. Bear in mind that if you would like TT on a landscape setting, it doesnt have that feature anymore so 5.21 is the way to go. Other than that, there are ways around it, it's up to you.

Sorry i disagree with that, it may not have it i the programm but i have my mic button set to switch between Land and Port. I just press that button and it works good in land!!!
To set a button Start, Setting, buttons, select you button at 1. and then select <Rotate screen> at 2.
and now you have landscape for Tomtom 6.0

The holux GPSlim 236 is a very good device, Sirf III so great reception and its tiny.
as has already been said, more channels isnt better, while there are loads of satellites up there due to the curv of the earth you will NEVER get more than 10 sats at once, Ive had 9 and thats the most my device sees.
You also only need 3 to get a lock. 4 gives your position in 3d (so altitude as well) and more doesnt really do much. So any 12 channel reciever is good. But yeah, aim for SIRF III, the quicker lock on and better reception in built up areas is a must.
Im currently using Tomtom 6 and its the latest and greatest. If your getting tomtom then obviously get 6, its actually cheaper than 5 (even cheaper if you know where to look )
I tried route 66 but its too much, Im a techie myself but this program is just stupid, giving you all sorts of useless info on screen and very little map.

Yes, I have "purchased" TomTom 6 already at an, erm, "good" price, with GB maps.
I'm gonna get a 2GB mini SD when I get paid, and a GPS receiver.
So am I right in thinking ANY Bluetooth sirfIII receiver will do?
Also is it easy to set up? I've read some scary (to me anyway!) stories about registry hacking etc on the XDA Mini S to get it to recognise GPS receivers.

Paiting a BT GPS is easy - just ensure that the name you give it ends in "GPS"..... then TomTom will connect to it .
That was valid for 5.32 - haven't tried 6 yet..

To answer the question, the pda version is Tomtom Navigator.
Mobile runs on 'phones'. By that I mean units that do not have a touchscreen.
Well thats my interpretation anyway. I have Tomtom 5 Mobile on a Nokia 7610. i.e. It doesn't have a touchscreen.

I decided to purposefully disregard price for the GPS and got a USGlobalsatBT359. It cost £75.
The reception is fantastic. I can get 8 or 10 sats at high strength if I stick the unit on the underside of the car roof. My TomTom Go barely picks anything up.
The start up time and battery life are great. Just needed to tweak the WM5 registry of the Vario2.
The only thing I don`t understand is the GPS control panel!!!! It does not seem to do much!!!!

And on that score, if you want to sacrifice your recording button, the next option, "Button 4 (Hold)", assign that to the Tomtom Navigator program and hey presto.

What i've done on mine is assign that button to the voice commander thing so I can run multiple actions by voice by holding in the button.
Not perfect but I found that assigning TT to just one button then left me wanting other things at other times.

I have a Holux (not HOLOX - cheap copy) 20 channel BT GPSlim 236 receiver which is great. A 32 channel receiver may well mean you stand a slightly better chance of picking up satelites but there isn't 32 satelites up there anyway.
The system works by triangulation meaning you only need three to get a lock on your position. The more you see the better though as the lock will be stronger. Many will tell you that due to the curvature of the earth you can only ever pick up 6 satelites maximum, but I happen to disagree.
Tomtom 5.21 is great, got it the other day and I found my way home first time... lol.!

p.s Don't forget that GPS works using US military satelites, so if the US feels a bit twitchy i.e. either someone is about to pick on them or vice versa then they can change the coordinates of the satelites meaning over a distance you won't have a clue where you are!!

Yeah it does but you might not need it.
Say you've got TT talking to the GPS on COM7, that's fine until you now need another app also talking to the GPS at the same time. It can't because the GPS is already talking to TT like a pair of housewives that haven't seen each other for, oh about a day! (ok, nothing like a bit of evil stereotyping eh?).
What the GPS control panel lets you do is share the GPS between multiple apps. You configure the GPS CP to talk to the real GPS via the hardware port number and then create a software GPS port.
You now configure your apps to talk to the software GPS port and the GPS port driver abstracts the real GPS port and sends the data to all the interested apps.
Like I said, you might not need it unless you want multiple apps to talk to the GPS at once. Why might you want to have multiple apps? One example could be a track data logger running at the same time as the satnav.
Or another might be Wififofum doing a wifi wardrive at the same time as running Tom Tom for satnav.

I just got a Globalsat 338 and its awesome!! Huge improvement over the SIRFII based CF card GPS I had for my old ipaq.
I also 2nd iguidance. Its cheaper than tomtom5. I don't know which I like more, they both different things well (but Iguidance sure loads faster than tomtom for me). I'm looking forward to trying tomtom6 to see if its a huge improvement

And would not send me the firmware to flash my gps230 so its now sat in a drawer doing nothing and i have a cheap £40 one thats brilliant BT-GPS

I want to buy some gps software for my dopod 838pro and a bluetooth gps receiver. I was wondering what ones work best with your hermes devices and what problems arise when using them.
I was looking at the papago software and it seems pretty good. If there is anyone here using it I would like to know your feedback on how it performs and also what kind of gps reciever you are using.

I suggest IBlue 737 with the latest MTK chipset, it has nice auto on/off feature an 25 hours of battery life. another more expensive option is the Garmin Gps10X (the new Sirf3 model only, the old one is crap)

google map is good with any GPS. (just nmake sure you have unlimited data) else it could be expensive.

ive used iGuidance 4 and iGO my way plus 2006 with BT-Q818

iGO rocks.. smooth.. and really nice...
iGuidance .. just plain and dull.. gps tracking not smooth as iGO is.
what i really like about iGuidance though is the TTS feature, and it tells you which side the destination is.. iGO does not..
if the features i liked in iGuidance would just be integrated in iGO, ill get it in a heartbeat.

yes, it will work with yahoo go 2.0. i use one myself(live in UK). make sure u have a data package though.(unlimited would be the best). i use t-mobile wnw £7.50 and a BT gps.its amazing what you can do with this phone.i love it

My favorite GPS sw is TomTom, great features, easy to use and no bugs. I use it with a earthmate bt-20. Takes up 1gb of space but worth it. Tomtom automatically connects to my BT receiver, responds quickly and has nice smooth 3d graphics.
My next favorite is MSN streets. It is easy to use and has the most up to date maps of my area.
I really dont care for Google maps unless I'm in a G network. If you dont have internet reception which is often the case when you travel then Google maps is completely useless.
The Earthmate BT-20 receiver seems to work ok but it is the only one I have tried. Its a ugly yellow, blue, and black 2"x3.5" plastic box. I look forward to the day when GPS is built in.

im in aussie town too, tomtom 6 (soon 7) on the hermes with some bluetooth gps that i got off ebay works wonders.
also has no issues running on prophet (my wifes phone) and my now retired magician.
microsoft streets was good when running in offline mode however it looks like they dont support australia anymore with the only map set available being a few years old.

i have the garmin GPS 10x and i get a weird error - ive only had it a week, long story short sometimes it wont turn on. --- how do you tell which model you have?
when it works, its awesome. tells you which turns to make, has a "recalculate" feature, good maps with a lot of detail
how do you connect it to google maps? i did it one time but haven't been able to do it since! would like to run it simulatneous with garmin XT the software that comes with it, google in satellite mode so you see from the sky where you travel to and hear from the garmin software which way to turn, would be pretty neat
i get confused which settings need to be put to which com port? i tried to add it in blue tooth and set up COM port 0 in there, and then go intot he GPS external setting (WM6) and set up both hardware and program port to 0 as well. cant get it to work alongside garmin XT software

Microsoft was offering a BT Pharos GPS for about $70 for PocketPC devices awhile back, not sure if they still are.
I got one and it works very well. The only difference between this and the typical Pharos offering is that it doesn't come with any software. Using it with Livesearch works perfectly -- the only thing Livesearch is lacking is vocal turn-by-turn directions and automatic trip recalculation. But of course you're not limited to just using livesearch with the GPS anyway.

Nokia Smart2GO.. It's tomtom but for free worldwide. (with some very minor limits/payable extras)

my favourite is Navigon (you can tinker soo nicely with all the settings 'under the hood' ).
Dunno whether Navigon has a AU map at all, but they sell under a different name in the USA.
I would recommend any sirfIII GPS antenna with a good review in one of the navigation fora. I am using a cheap Mainnav that is OK.(great reception even behind metal coated car windows)

I use TomTom 6 with a Nokia Bluetooth GPS reciever.. i got it for 29.99 from Fry's!!!
I live in central texas and when Katrina was on its way to New Orleans fries had CRAZY discounts on GPS units, Maglites, Waterproof cases for pdas.. basicly almost anything that can be used for "survival" so i grabbed a bunch of other stuff... now that Hurricane Dean is on its way i'm pretty sure they'll have discounts again... Time to hit up Fry's!!

GPS application for Android?

Ok, I am still waiting for HTC desire to come to my door. At the moment I am just wondering what GPS application available for Android (I mean like Garmin or Tomtom thing??) As I understand both Garmin and Tomtom are still unavailable. I know the phone should come with Google map? As I understand it google map require internet connection not just GPS? the thing is I dont have internet connection with my phone plan. I only use wifi or hotspot. So I need GPS application that can work just by using the built-in GPS? Besides the internet package here downunder in Aussie is pretty limited...too low capacity. I wish they have unlimited connection.

Navigon is available in the market, as is CoPilot and a few others. I prefer CoPilot of those two but am really waiting for Sygic's Aura, which looks awesome.

In China, KLD（凯立德） and Gaode（高德） have published NAV software based on android OS, and it run smoothly.

Aura is very nice indeed, but it wont be available soon.
I asked this to Sygic and they said that iPhone version will be available FIRST.
Then Android ...
Now you can wait for a year or two

The trial version works great.
Once activated with a bought key it stops working.
Wierd.

I have CoPilot and Sygic on my Desire and both work fine.
I was not so impressed with Navigon.
I have iGO on my diamond and it beats all three of them qua quality, but must say Aura looks good.

i've just finished to install Igo Amigo for my Desire, and is working so good . For Europe (for me, I've been in many countries) is the best...for America, i think another one like tomtom you should choose.

If anyone is planning on using the hacked-to-work-outside-US Google navigation ("Maps brut"), I wouldn't bother. I've used it and decided it was no replacement for a proper paid GPS application. Turn by turn voice cues are erratic and often late or not-present, and for some reason the next road to be taken is always "unknown". I missed turns twice because of the lack of cues.
I used Google navigation for a 2 1/2 hour journey, in that time the phone went from 2/3 battery to severe battery warnings and red indicator. This was with an old, non-official car charger plugged in! I strongly suspect that the frequency of the screen update and the use of 3G are probably culprits, not to mention the frequent re-routing as I missed turns.
My old WinMo phone used to run CoPilot 7 and would do substantially better with no in-car charging.
What is the battery life like with the £20 CoPilot? Is a proper in-car charger a must for journeys > 3h?

I had some issues on copilot 7 WM with mapping. The maps were quite old and sometimes the routing was very odd. On test routes where I knew where I was going it would sometimes take me off in what I knew to be a longer way round by far. I'm sure there will be much newer maps on version 8.
The Navigon I find is very good but only annoying thing I find is landscape view. Between the bars on the software and the taskbar on the handset, the map only uses about half the available screen which is disappointing.
If anyone knows if it is possible to view more fullscreen please correct me.

Can anyone recommend Android nav software for cycling?
CoPilot appears to have a cycling option, Navigon not.

I'm not a cyclist, but shouldn't ANY of them do as long as you stick to the roads? I don't know of any that have off-road capability...

Yeah, I COULD follow the roads they suggest, but I don't fancy cycling on motorways/highways.
Don't want off-road, just want small quieter roads...

I'm pretty sure you can tell CoPilot to ignore certain roads...

Co-pilot has a walking and a cycling mode. Haven't tried them out yet though.

Tom Tom release?
TomTom 6 om my Diamond was phenomenal, and was by far the most customisable for me. (downloading voices, maps, POI, speed cams etc). I know that TomTom are releasing a ver for Android soon, but does anyone know what the current developments are? Just waiting on my DESIRE now, and am ready to go!! If not anytime soon, I might have to settle with CoPilot, as it has Australia Maps, and South Africa maps (worldcup). How good is CoPilot is though Australia? Anyone know? And do I need an Internet connection to run it?

the best I tried so far and worked brilliantly even in Cyprus is sygic 10 mobile maps!

Navigon gets my vote.
Clear maps, works smooth.

I really like Navigon, look cool...except dont think there is NO map for Australia? Can anyone suggest anything that has Australian map?? I also want something that does not need internet connection?? (Google map is free but need internet) just plain GPS.

Best GPS Software For The HD2

I will not be testing any free GPS Navigation software.
I will begin testing the following GPS Navigation Software for Windows Phone tonight.
I will be posting reviews for the major ones with tips to tweak the settings to get most out of your Windows Phone.
I will also be testing the Radio Firmwares and see which ones play nice.

I have CoPilot Live 8 installed on my HD2. It picked up the GPS receiver with no work on my part. Accuracy and speed seem good. It did not lag behind my actual location. I am curious about the quality of routes calculations versus some of the other programs. That's a software issue, not a GPS or HD2 issue.

I find that Garmin has a pretty bad lag on my hd2 with the stock class 2 card. IGO also has a lag but it's not so bad.

Again, Explain the lag on the HD2, What part is lagging in Garmin when it starts up, Re-Calculating?
I experience no lag at all in Garmin Mobile XT 5.00.20
What rom are you using? Which Radio?

I'm using an energy rom with 2.10 radio. What maps are you using? I'm using the 2011 maps which I had on my portable car garmin gps. Lag meaning as I drive past one street it'll take a second to actually show on the unit that i'm passing that particular street.

I've been using IGO 8 for about 2 months now.
i had some problems initially getting it to pick up
on my gps receiver. I opened up google maps let that get
a fix on my location then opened up IGO8, fixed the problems.
i like this software (aside from no landscape)
but haven't tried any of the other ones so
i'd be interested in how it will stack up against the rest

I would also like to see CoPilot tested if you can. I tried the android version and I keeps getting a location half a block away while google maps reports my location correctly. I'd like to see your experience with it since it's a very cool looking program and has spoken street names.
The Garmin mobile xt runs beautifully on my hd2, I ran it side by side with my old 855 and they were step by step. Often tbe hd2 locks on to satellites quicker due to the agps. It ran so well I gave the 855 to my sister

I own TomTom 7, and just installed it today after purchasing the HD2 yesterday. Picked up the internal GPS perfectly fine without adjusting any settings. Runs very smoothly, trip calculations are fast, and it looks awesome on that big screen. Only thing I am concerned about is heat from sitting on my windshield mount in the sun, as I've read that some folks have had issues with the phone resetting when it gets hot.
I'll be interested to read anything else that your testing might come across.

If anyone needs their GPS software to AutoRotate let me know.
It's an easy fix and does not require installing yet another application on your phone. Regisry tweak packaged in a cab.
Have a link at my other post about Garmin Auto Rotate and you will see.
The same can be done for most programs not just GPS Navigation.

Primo all the way
The best IMHO for HD2 is Primo. Which is next version from iGo8. I use Primo 1.1 with 800x480 data. Works like a charm, including TTS.

Suprisingly Good...
I was on a trip last week and realized I needed to find the route to a hotel from the airport. Since I didn't have a GPS device, I went into Bing and had it calculate my route. It gave me turn x turn voice navigation and I was able to get to the hotel with no issues. It was clear, direct and fast. It gave me plenty of warning when my next exit or turn was coming up based on my position.
Since I don't use Garmin or other GPS specific devices, I don't have much to compare it to but since this was free, no worries!

I use TomTom too - no probs here and i dont have any heat. The only thing with TomTom is that the company has ceased to update the navcore for win mob devices so the nice stuff that is available on the dedicated TomTom devices isnt available on PDA eg:street name voice.

Where did you get TomTom v7? I just checked TomTom's site and the only mobile navigation I see is for the iPhone.

Just do a search in TomTom website for TomTom Navigator. That's how I get the latest TomTom Navigator. I believe its version 7.917 if I am not mistaken. Also, someone in the forum posted that cab file somewhere here. Just do a search.

I don't think searching is necessary, as it's probably removed if a cab file was linked to (piracy).

Have you tried one of the air vent mounts that are available? They are all over e-bay. That would keep the HD2 out of the direct sunlight. I don't know which vent mount to suggest because someone gave me mine, and it doesn't have any manufacturer's markings on it.
