Indestructable Phone? (or more likely, just luck!)

Wow.... just Wow.
10 minutes ago i was on the balcony of my building here looking at my phone checking an email, when a friend who was talking to me got rather physical with his talking and accidently swung his hand into mine, causing my lovely Hermes to fly over the balcony and land approx 20ft below onto cold hard concrete (all this happened in slow motion obviously)..
the battery and back flew of in opposite directions and we both stood there looking over the balcony with our mouths open.
well i went down and put it back together (just the battery, stylus and battery cover came off)
as i came into the building again i thought i might as well try turning it on but there wouldn't be a chance in hell it would work..
but

it turned on... and the screen wasn't cracked or even marked. i thought, well maybe the touch sensitivity is dead.... again, no it was fine. ok maybe I'll try the phone... :O whoa.. it ALL seems to be ok.
considering me and a few of my mates have accidently killed thier Wizards merely by farting near them (ok slight exageration but you get my drift) i must say i'm very impressed with the robustness of the Hermes.
i'm also bloody glad its working cos i cancelled the insurance pack on it the other day too!

Care to give more details on.. the cover (any means of protection) you had on it, and point of impact (e.g. the part which your phone first touch the ground - look for the area that is messed up the most).
From what it seems, it is likely to be luck. Dont try it again And put up a sign, 'Kids, dont try this at home' at your post above.

yeah i know its just luck. but its a good advert for the hermes robustness
no protection. other than a crappy screen protector which would have made no difference.
point of impact was pretty much exactly the little round hole bit on the bottom right on the back.
no need for a dont try this at home. if anyones dumb enough to copy then they deserve all they got coming to them!

Hermes are amazingly durable, but I think dropping them off a building and them still working is luck.
You should be seperated from your Hermes, since you obviously have a complete disregard for it.. Blasphemy...

my hermes has dropped 4 times from about 1m to 1m vertical+60cm in horizontal.., three times into the the original case..
- The first time the left keyboard slide doesn't "click" when opened for 3 days.. now it's ok o), 1 corner damaged. (with cover)
- Second time, this time without case, the keyboard, opened, is swell at the center.. just fix the lateral keyb joints.
- 3rd and 4th time, with the case, the second and third corners goes out (scratches) and, maybe for the use, the pen is easy to pull out (the first 15 days was VERY HARD to remove)
Maybe at the end of the year, or i change the cover, or buy a new pda

I must say they are suprisingly robust. I droped mine from mike 1-1.5 meter hight around 8 times in the pub before I replaced it (camera broke). At worst the keyboard pops up so you have to press it back in. No major scratches or anything. Then one day the camera just broke so I now have a new one which I havent dropped yet... It still has the same **** issues as my first which I thought first was caused by me dropping it but apparently not.

I am proud to say I have never, ever, dropped any of my cell phones, and especially not my Hermes. I would probably take a dive to land underneath my Hermes if I did end up dropping it!

Dropped 8525 Stories
I had my 2 day old unprotected Cingular 8525 in my golf cart cup holder. It was about 25 degrees out and we were traveling full speed on a concrete pathway when we hit a speed bump. In slow motion, of course, my 8525 rose out of the cup holder and slammed into the concrete pathway, from about three feet in the air, and slid about 10 to 15 feet screen down. The battery cover flew off and the battery came out.
Low and behold, there was not a scratch or any damage to the phone. Everything still works great to this day (7 months later). I have had several minor drops tot he ground since then as well.
What a great phone!!!

I'm pretty happy that I managed to sell my HTC Tattoo, but maybe there are phone models which can't be sold anymore because they are not valuable anymore...

Selling my Htc magic hehe to a guy that was honest with me that he wants to buy them to fix and re-sell them (doesn't care about condition), and a good price too of 235$ canadian.
unless I can find higher i'll sell to him.

Its name is O2 Atom Life , i had Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 before but it died in front of my eyes so i went back to the mentioned device >_>

In that case.........

So very, very mad at my G1. A trip to the desert with my 12 gauge will set things right!

Use it as my drunk phone when I'm out and drinking.
Or maybe I just use my even older W850i for that.
X1 wasn't really cheap when it come out and I dont know if I want to lost it when I'm drunk.
It's still awesome phone.

Ill send in my nexus one to google to get it replaced for minor cosmetic damage. Then i'll either sell it, give it to the wife (which is unlikely since she drops and loses all the gadgets i give her) or put it in the draw on top of my Xperia X1i.

Dont even make me bring up umbrellas ... The loss of my umbrellas brings a tear to my eye ... they were not just regular umbrellas they were art.
A week later after she had borrowed my umbrella ... "Hey babe do you know where my umbrella is ..." She replies ... "Oh, yea, I forgot it in the train, im sorry. Can i borrow this other one its pouring outside?"
At that point I just have to give up and give in. It is a helpless cause ... what did i get myself into.

I can't give my old one to the misses, she already wants a Galaxy S too, and being Korean she thinks she's more entitled to the first one!
I'll probably put a stock ROM back on my HD and offer it up on FreeCycle.

I'll keep my touchpro and drop the sim in it when I'm out on the water. That way if my phone goes swimming at least it's not the galaxy.

I hate how badly HTC tempers some of their phones [screen that is]
I remember when I got my first TP2, broke screen on first drop... I had a replacement,... That I still have... I treat it like trash! And lemme tell you this thing is sturdy. My Evo... Has been abused, dropped, fell straight on the curb of the sidewalk (right onto the raised part and onto the floor). Only visible thing is a tiny dot of glass that chipped off the lower bottom right.. This one is sturdy as hell too...

this was my first time dropping the phone, I only had it for about two weeks.
The screen is like scratch proof but not shatter proof, it should be the other way around at least (hopefully both). I tried using my keys to scratch out a hole in the glass so i could take it out and see if i could get a replacement glass but the keys wouldnt even scratch as hard as i tried

i died a little inside when i saw that picture. if that happened to my phone...i would probably cry

Dang that really sux. I was so scared when I dropped my Evo at work from a height of 30 ft and lucky for me I just had sum dirt in the kick stand but that was the day I added insurance on my bill. I'm sure if u have insurance they will give u a new screen as there was a time with my instinct I broke the screen 3 times in a month and Sprint fixed it no questions asked

@ the PIC why put a 500$ phone on a sent and EVEN take the chance of it falling ?

That sucks man . Well if you don't have insurance, they sell replacement touch screen digitizers on eBay. Not sure how easy it is to replace.

I have no affiliation to that seller, just looked up the cheapest one that wasn't out of the country.
Looks like some guys just put up a repair video too and it doesn't look too difficult, but I'd be scared to do it myself lol.

Most sprint repair stores are stocking glass/screen replacements. Just go down there and get it fixed, generally they can do them in 15-20 minutes

actually im within the first 30 days, so im taking the phone back to a store and swapping it for a brand new one. which seems like a great deal to me.

if you are rooted you will probably have to unroot... but you already knew that

I just flashed back to the stock rom i found in the evo wiki, that should be good correct ?

You should be good with that. In my experience I've had no trouble taking rooted devices in to them. I always make sure at the very least it appears stock when they power it up.

I called them and they are the ones that suggested i just return it and get a new one since it's within thirty days. I called the store too, not sprint (sometimes they like to contradict each other).

Anyone else still have their launch day evo?

Title says it all. I still have mine, and haven't run into any issues or defects with it. It seems like most folks have had to get theirs replaced at some point. Did I just get lucky?

I would say a lot of people do too. People won't complain when things are going well, ya know? How often do you see a thread titled "Everything is great, no problems here"

something Happened to my launch day Evo...idk what, can't remember that is, I've had it replaced...then I broke 2 Evo screens....so I think I'm on #4....but this is the first phone (besides the touch pro) that I've had replaced so much, I usually keep my phones in perfect condition...but the Evo just kept fallin out my hands....

Still got mine, no problems. 'Cept the lack of 4G makes me sad.

Launch day here too.
Running Miui and it feels new!

I still got mine from 1 week after launch day. It has power button and volume button cracks, and it has been dropped several times by myself and my 2 y/o. One time it fell, it was inside the leather case I carry it in but both upper corners remain exposed in my case. Of course, it landed right on one of the two exposed corners (on a cement floor), and broke one of the clips that hold the phone together. So now, my Evo looks like this:

I put a quarter in there so you can see how much of a gap there is, but I did pry it open a bit for a more dramatic effect. lol Until it stops working perfectly, I'm riding with this phone until it's dead or I get something better.

I had to get my original Evo replaced after around two months.
There was a small horizontal area on the screen that would not produce any touch actions, so it made it difficult to do some activities (there was an important button within the SMS app I used and upon tapping on the button, there would be no executed action). Dragging down the notification bar simply skipped over the dead spot. Dotty also proved the same results.
This was my first problem ever with a phone and I don't see it as being user error. However, my replacement has been great (knock on wood).

My screen started lifting about a month after I had it, so it had to be replaced. I've had the replacement ever since though.

I still have my Launch day EVO. Zero problems. Just a few light marks on the edges because of a stupid cheap protective case.

2nd evo here, got my I/o evo in may few months later no more keys now on 004 hardware

Bought mine at 9am launch day. Still perfect. Crack on powerbutton. Screen protector immediately and seidio innocase 360 with holster from day 1. Best Phone I ever owned. Can't wait to see what my next upgrade will do.

[OFFTOPIC] Phone Dependency

So, I dropped my phone and cracked the screen, and have sent it off for repair.
Am amazed at how anxious I feel without it, it almost hurts. A dull ache in the chest...
I use my phone for meeting planning, music, video, books, pretty much everything, even the phone sometimes... and without it.. I just feel so sad..
Had to break out the old SE960i. I turned it on it's side and the display stayed in portrait... and the screen is so small.... and there is nowhere to put my SD card... and I can't flash a new rom... I could go on....
Anyway, thanks for listening, just had to get that off my chest....

Sad is it not the modern generation . Nothing to live for .
Need constant outside stimulation .

I didn't have it quite that bad when I was stuck with a Moto Dext for a loaner for a month due to the i9000m SD card issue.
It was android (1.5) and the screen still auto-rotated, but it was so dull and small compared to the SGS. Browsing was horribly slow.

i'll die without a hi tech device (smart phone)

i almost rang the doctor for anti depressants..... Horrible flashback.... still suffering insomnia because of the nightmares i had....

Without my SGS I would have to carry a notebook and pen, portable dvd player (and a few DVD's), an mp3 player, a netbook with a 3g dongle, a Gameboy Avanced, and a phone.
