Official UK upgrade is here.
Rom 3.14.13
Radio 4.16
http://www.o2.co.uk/productsservices/xda/romupgrade/0,,170,00.html
very dissapointed really
No promised MMS, no signal improvements, and although I have yet to install, it looks like there is no fix to the following problems either
1 - SMS name fix, althought the patch on this site does that so feck em!
2 - Switching to phone app after sending sms AFTER a call has been made/received
3 - O2 CS in general, look at all the other international releases, yet O2 are still waaay behind.
4 - Action update is beyond a joke!
Kevin
What? 3.14.13? .... I am expecting a new rom with MMS fuction...
Is it just me or are people not bothering to read the O2 site properly.
They didn't actually promise the MMS update in March. This is due "later in in the year", along with modem capabilities and other stuff.
MMS or sms name fix is not built into any ROM available anywhere. I know somebody who works for O2 and has the next ROM/Radio being tested and apparently this doesn't have this either.
I agree, lets kick their ass on how long it's taken to release this, but lets get our facts straight first.
Lets be realistic. A lot of the stuff we want is not going to be available until PPC 2003, so we will all have to buy new devices by then.
absolute disgust !!!
this is a shambles I wonder how this company continues to exist ?
how can they promise items in an upgrade then basically take 4 months longer than anyone else to put out this "upgrade".
Seems to me like they have the attitude "we have your money so [email protected] you"
I WILL NEVER purchase another XDA from o2.
the idea was fantastic the way they treat people is an absolute disgrace.
could you imagine the rebellion there would be if you bought a telly that kept on losing the channels you had programed when it felt like it.
this was a total waste of money on my behalf.
I will go back to my ipaq and nokia combination.
does anyone want to buy a pretty ppc with a half functioning toy phone built in.
 :x
THIS IS CRAP!
radio 4.16 still has the unable to re-aquire signal unless plugged into the cradle.
****e ****e ****e I gave O2 the benefit of the doubt for tha last 6 months with the promise that this radio version would fix this problem but it does not. I repeat NOT !
now my blood is boiling time to start a campaign.
The problem with not reaquiring the signal is SIM card related. Get a new SIM card and the problem will disappear.
Atleast this is what I found.
amarko5,
So you have been waiting 6 months for an upgrade to fix your xda not picking up a signal unless in a cradle? And it never occured to you that you have a broken xda or sim?
Well done on winning the completely stupid 2003 award. How do you not fall over more often?????
Unbelieveable.
Now, now, settle down or there'll be tears before bedtime. It is ****e though isn't it? How many people do you think O2 have got working on software? Could it be as many as one? Do you think he(she) works full time, maybe he has a day job as a plumber, very busy time of year this! The nokia/ipaq option is looking good.

I have contacted o2 on many occasions and it is a "KNOWN BUG" so keep your simple minded comments to yourself.
i have tried 3 sim cards in the phone and all are the same.
I have 2 friends who suffer tha same complaint and there are also many people reporting the same problem on the official source o2 website.
it occurs if the phone loses signal for any extended period of time and if the battery is less than 3/4 charged.
when dropped back in cradle the extra power seems to kick it back up.
if signal is not lost ie local in good area then the phone functions normally
even with low power.
get your facts straight before making childish comments.
P.S. i only ever fall over when i trip over idiots like YOU !

Look i agree O2 has fail on many level but their failure in understanding what we need shouldnt reflect on us... cool down and lets focus on how to get o2 to make the necassary changes

Being in the UK never helps
Why is it that we in the UK have some of the best engineers in the world. But we can't get a simple thing like a bleedin phone to work!
People come from all over the world to get education in the UK. We are a great nation. So O2 UK get yer arse into gear FFS ! ! !
~MArtin
Hi,.
I'm the first Guest who replied about it being the SIM card. I had the problem and I found that my friends O2 SIM fixed the problem. I ordered a new SIM card and it did the trick. If anyone else has the problem and their friends "NEW" SIM card don't fix it, then I too would suggest that it is your XDA that is at fault.
O2 say that it is a known bug which is true - but a bug that can be fixed with a new SIM.
Trust me or not, I was only trying to fix your problem.
@amarko 5
i have problem that may be same as you reported. phone frozen and does not load the radio on a soft reset ? impossibe to use, turn off radio etc. didn't think the power was low to be exactly the same as your problem tried putting back in cradle and on usb hot sync cable - nothing was running radio 408 and 3.14.13. only possible was a full hard reset reset which cured and reloaded radio. have now upgraded to radio 416 as per new o2 update. is this ongoing problem from your knowledge?? will an upgrade to 3.15.xx eng (dutch o2 i think ??) fix it as mentioned in earlier posts??
The Problem still existed after the upgrade (well several re upgrades as well)
I appreciated Guests suggestion of sim card but I have tried 3 simms now 2 of which are just a few weeks old.
It didn't solve my issues.
At present O2 support seem to admit they knew about it and have agreed to take my XDA back to fix (I really hope they do)
so at present i am without my XDA as it's in the post back to O2.
I really didn't want to mess with any unofficial upgrades as you suggest as it may have invalidated warranty.
I may have been a bit slow in getting this sorted but at first O2 just denied a problem it is only recently they seem to acknowledge it.
BTW this BUG seems to affect a lot of people of you read the newsgroups on O2 source newsgroups.
I hope you have better luck with the upgrade if not then i suggest a visit to an O2 shop or call the support line to return it.
dont suffer like i did.
I also hope they compensate me for the useless functionallity of the sp called phone but i have my doubts maybe i will have to consult trading standards or watchdog
time will tell and i will keep you informed of progress.
Is there some kind of matrix available showing which country is at what ROM/Radio thing? All very confusing for amateurs like me.
Also, would it not be more productive for HTC to do the updating, make it a universal download, but with localised add-ons available
If I'm hopelessly out of my depth here, throw me a lifebelt...
soft reset
Hi,
My xda have the same problem but after a few
soft reset or adjusting the power settings
it now works fine.
same problem

I had exactly the same problem. They suggested that i get a new sim card because the sim is 2 years old but i couldnt be arsed with that. i phoned XDA fault centre and they said i could send it back for repair. 3 days later, i got it back, and it was working normally again, with a couple of hickups.
It's Christmastime so Im posting a topic on peace and love...
I was originally planning to post a topic on whether there's such an application for the Univ where you can schedule your SMS... I had this app on the P9 and surprised my friends by scheduling SMS to them to send at exactly 12midnight..Was planning to do this later for Christmas.. but works great on birthdays too.. I wish I had that for my Universal/Dopod too. Then it got me thinking that it was like comparing an ex-boyfriend to a current one.. and it lead to me this topic...
Whew, what an intro!
Anyway, I wanted to ask if you guys had the same "feeling" too. This forum is probably dominated by guys and I wanted to know if my feelings are way overboard already. You see, I "love" my dopod. It's a gift from my husband so I dont think it counts as an affair. But i treat it as a really special thing. I handle it really gently. I almost broke into tears when a drop of water almost seeped through the speaker. I look at it once in a while. I dream of wonderful apps to install into it. I always compare it with my old P9 (now being used by my hubby) and tell it, it's far more superior. Sometimes, i think it smiles at me when I say that.. haha. I spent hours looking for the right case. The first one I found was too hard, the other one, too snug. When I found the right case, I still didnt think it was the best for it but at least it could serve its purpose. It's the last thing I see when I go to sleep.. It stays on my left while my hubby's on my right at night. It's the one who wakes me up in the morning with a soft gentle voice. I smile whenever I open it. I just love it...
Scary huh? I think my hubby's the same way with his xbox and gamecube coz Prince of Persia is the last he sees at night.. haha.. We are one weird couple, arent we?
Anyway, Im rambling here.. just wanted to know if you had the same way for your universal.. and how do you "love" it?
And also if anyone could tell me if there was an SMS Scheduler for the universal, that would be great too!
Thanks!!! MERRY CHRISTMAS!
Angelica, i think you just managed to alienate even a few of us freaks with your degree of devotion!
When I'm programming, i can't sleep for hours mulling over unresolved issues. when my better half is talking to me I find myself phasing out and wondering how to make a better today plugin or somesuch. it's getting scary... but i digress:
Universal - it's beautiful but I barely use it, because i'm always just developing for it, not using it... i haven't installed any customisations yet (except vjlumos). i use my magician as my phone.
however, universal is a beautuful multifunction device. love? hmm. maybe not. but certainly the occassional lust! damn htc have too many devices coming out to settle down as a one phone man
if anyone has a spare Atom (i know not htc) let me know.
re sms app, if you don't find one, let me know. i used to take good advantage of the p900 sms scheduler for sickies at work, so i could sleep in
v
Let me start with wishing you guys a merry christmas!
My craze for the Universal started back in Aug, was thinking of getting a PPCPE for my work since I'm always on the outfield and seldom in the office. Was at that time thinking of buying P50 until a good friend of mine send me a link of a picture of Black universal
I start talking about it ever since.Call the local telcos and even ask some of my connections on news when universal launching in my country. Was so excited when I got rumours that O2 launching the Black beauty!! Then came the sad news that O2 not launching any HTC product in Asia as HTC wants their Dopod subsidiary company to monopolise Asia. What a thud on my head! Duh!
Then I decided to get a set from UK. search everywhere try to contact long lost friends whom happen to study in UK am getting sleepless nights and even nightmares...yes can you believe this nightmares!! Then a good samartian whom I came in contact with in UK. He help me making my dream come true. I am really greaful to him.I'm now in possesion and a proud owner of an Exec. The set have not leave out of my sight since! Msn,surfing, documents editing, send/receive emai-l free WiFi is everywhere here...too many" friendly neighbour "if you know what I mean.
I would to say thanks to Vijay555 for making my dream come thru

We are kindred spirits!
My obsession started at about the same time too.. I was saddened by the news that O2 is not releasing it in Asia.. Emailed them too... and they said I ought to settle for Atom. But I was dead set on the Universal as it really was the "universe" for me. I had a picture on it on my pc and it was my constant piece of motivation at work.. haha..
Finally got it and it really was a great device. Sure there are some bugs but I have accepted the fact that there's no such thing as perfect in this universe, much more in my Universe. And I believe in Kaizen.... continued improvement... I too, would like to say my thanks to Vijay for continuing to improve this wonderful device. Hats off to you.. and to us lovesick puppies, let the love continue!
Its almost Xmas day. Merry Xmas everyone, and especially for you, Angelika. I'm smiling when I read your posting, we can even talk about 'love' even though this is a techie forum. That's really great!
I have the same 'feelings' so that I reply to this posting.
My first love was not the Universal though. It was the XDA, the very first generation. We call it T-Mobile PPC here in the US. Its the best device I ever had in my life, and that's true even until today. It works almost in every condition and places I go everyday: office, car, airport, home, and at night it sits right to my bed. And yes, it does wake up every morning.
Then I tempted to replace my XDA with a XDA mini. Because we don't have XDA in the US, then I got one branded as i-mate JAM. Main reason was because its smaller and has bluetooth. After using it for 2 weeks, I wrap it as a gift for my dear little brother.
Since then I had plenty of pictures of the coming Universal. Could not wait until it was released. I read the review about it a lot, I imagined holding it, etc. Then I was so sad when they said it might not even come to the US as no wireless provider wanted to carry it. etc etc.
I bought it when finally it was here available in the US though it was so expensive. Even though its 3G does not work here. Even though we could not use the video conferencing feature. Even though ppl reported many bugs. But I show it proudly to ppl and talk about it everytime somebody asks about it.
After using it for a while, I found it really delicate. So that when I go to work I would prefer to carry my XDA instead. And when I got home I will use my Universal. May be its not that delicate as I said, but the point is that, I do not want anything happen to my Universal while I'm bringing it around. Is that 'the love' I feel for it? Nah... I'm just kidding.
Btw, last nite I dropped my Universal when I was sitting in a restaurant, and on my way home, I kept telling myself not to carry it out anymore. I did not cry though when it dropped, but I did inspect the detail: no scrath, SD card was pulled out due to the bump, and I think the swivel mechanism is a bit lose after that. May be just my feelings.
It took me few years to reach the point when my XDA handles everything I need it to do perfectly in all scenarios: when I work, when I play, when I drive, when I travel, when I sleep, etc.
In the case of this Universal, though its a pretty device and far superior to my XDA, but today, it still cannot handle all scenarios correctly. For example, something really funny I have everynite, my Universal rings me up every 12 AM because there is an All Day Appointment I set for the next day in Outlook. My XDA never does that to me and they're both synced to the same PC. If I think the same as you, Angelika, then I should believe the Universal tries to get more attention from me. Ha ha ha..
I love my Universal but my first love still my XDA. And my XDA will remain the best device I ever have.
Universal + "Love, Peace" =
Universal + "Cute" =
Universal + "oh chooo chweeeet" = eiyuuuuuu
Universal + "its muh byabeeee" =
XDA-Dev + (Any of above) = holyyyyyy helllllll no wayyyyyyyy!!!
"I think my BULLDOG kicks some baddd ass!" - Yeahhhhh!!!
lol
Cheers and merry christmas to all of you
S
I love my Universal as much as I love sheep........
Merry Christmas everyone
I am missing my XDA Exec as it is having some repairs hopefully it will come back all fixed
Merry Christmas and lets hope we have a little more Peace on Earth in the New Year
argh2000: how are you getting on with it? everything ok? you still want some more to complete your harem of Universals!? will email next week. Love the forum btw, coming on very well.
i've got some new releases coming next week, and for all you VGA universal lovers, I had an idea for a new app you might find useful. news next week.
angelica, have you tried vga yet? and did you get your launcher sorted?

I keep it charging on my bedside at night with the screen turned on. Sometimes I leave it with a movie "The Incredibles" playing till the next morning.
Yay! It's Christmas day! Although I got my Christmas present days ago, Im still very happy about it..
Vijay555, Im really looking forward to your new release... Im sure it's a great app again. Ehem....Could it be the sms scheduler I've been searching for? Either way, I know it's still something great. Ive installed your PhoneTools and I have them in my Today Screen but I seldom use it coz I still need to edit the messages I send anyway... and it's still defaulted at +1234.. Cant seem to edit it.. I uninstalled Clauncher and just stuck with SPBPocket Plus...
cktlcmd, wow! What a way to maximize your universal.. Im tempted to try the same thing..
dreamtheater39, I know I'm so faaaaar away from the techies here in this forum and the universal isnt probably meant to incite any cute or mushy feeling from anybody, as it is cold as steel. But hey, cant help it.. i really get this mushy warm feeling whenever I look at it. Now, aint that some kind of passion too? I bet most of the techies here have the same passion for a new program or when deciphering a code. I guess to each his own... But hey, I bet I made you smile, didnt I?
Confucious, sheep? Then, are u a shepherd?

Hey Vijay555, how is your holiday in Italy going?
My Exec is great, after upgrading the rom and plus some tweaking,it's flying  well maybe I'm abit to exagerating.. but i love my set
Looking forward for your new applications
Holiday in Italy is going well but looking forward to being back in the uk now! the free time is giving me too much time to think of new apps.... too many to program, i'm going to have to start programming full time!
The universal app will hopefully improve life for VGA thumb usage.
Another for general WM5 use bringing back a missing feature hopefully. No more details till I know if I can do it. Hopefully shortly I'll also get my blog going to discuss ideas, progress and general programming & improving/hacking the PDA
VJAccioPhone is a program I finished coding just before the holiday that had kept me busy for quite a few late nights. I've not released it yet, but search the board to find my 'preannouncement'. Hopefully it'll be very useful for us idiots carrying $1000 phones! Proper news next week...

ps while waiting for a table in a restaurant in florence yesterday I met a guy who asked about my phone (magician) He'd just bought himself a wizard. i felt embarrassed sounding so passionate about the phones! Freaks we are, one and all....
Hi Vijay! Merry Christmas too! Wow, what a way to spend your vacation--- still thinking of wonderful apps to share with us..
Your new app looks promising! If only I had the technical know-how, I'd be helping out too.. but then, Im a mere mortal, waiting for blessings from techie gods like you..

Merry Christmas!
Thought about this a bit more.
I have a "love"/"hate" relationship with my XDA Exec. The hardware is great (keyboard, sceeen and all the wireless connectivity) but the software seems incomplete and on some areas very poor quality (why memory leaks on a device in 2005? memory management is not bleeding edge tech!). I really think if HTC could double the user storage and available RAM this could have been a device well ahead of its time. It is the first of a new genertion of wireless PDA/mini tablets. I really want to carry around all my business data (2/3GB) on this device, but the need to reset it a few times a day doe snot make the Universal a reliable business tool. Perhaps we'll get some fixes in the new year.

i have the same problem too I have a qtek with stock rom loaded....and the free ram slowly drops....and after a couple hours of use, its down to 10-15megs of free ram even with all apps closed
Hope they'd fix it soon....!
Another quirk...using it as a phone is crazy without the bluetooth headset...you need two hands, and complete attention to pull off the "Answer the phone" maneuver :x
Otherwise, its just awesome

Yes, it's true. My precious was run over by a car last night. I left it on the roof of my car
It was pretty well destroyed but the battery, SIM, mem card and stylus are all still ok. The stylus and mem card were still in it after being run over twice! HAH.
Spilt milk - new phone time. I can't justify getting a black one because of the ongoing coating issue. They are still shipping junk. HTC recently replaced my bezel and the new one peeled within 2 weeks. Question: white Trinity or alternative? Can anyone suggest a better device? I don't need GPS, BT or Wifi. HSDPA is a must and I won't buy Eten.
Any info would be great to get me started on my search. Also, I am in Chicago for business but I have a couple of afternoons to kill. Does anyone stock phones there?
Get the white one!
It's still the best PDA-phone around (if no H/W keyboard needed)
Anyone have any stories where their trinity beats the car? Heard of a legend once of an unbreakable pre-production trinity where the dude ran it over and it still worked flawlessly. Anyway sorry to hear about your trinity guess it isn't the chosen one.

Anyway Baxter, it's really a shame to hear about your phone. When you get back home you've got to take pictures and post them if you still have the phone and have not thrown it away yet. (Yes Looking Glass, that's what the picture was implying, to post pictures. Stop being such a negitive Nancy, a man just ran over his 500 dollar phone.)
Don't know about the trinity but I ran over my mio A701 (fell out of my pocket outside mates house and I didn't realize). Smashed the screen and put a few kinks in the casing but it still rang ( mates neighbour picked it up after I'd been ringing it for 10 mins or so). Replaced lcd and its working fine but will be changing to a trinity or a eten x800 end of July when contract expires.

I'm using my Torq P120 (Eten M600) for now. Maybe they have improved the build quality but their customer service is non-existent. I posted my experience on Eten Users forum last year. People are contacting me to figure out how I was able to get service from them. Evidently just getting a response is difficult now.
I think it's time for a white Trinity. Anyone know what ROM is shipping now? When they service my black one, they shipped it back with the original ROM. Is there a particular brand to look for in the US? My last one was HTC branded.
Heh. Had some time to revive my trinity. It works! Well, a little. It booted and I was able to sync & browse via PC. I couldn't get the phone to work. Atleast I can get all of my data & backup one last time.
Screen is toast
Camera glass is broken
Phone doesn't work
Probably not worth the repair even though it would make a good backup device.
Finally remembered...
http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u305/Krash7172/Misc/deadtrinity.jpg
It makes a nice charger for my backup battery!!
Sorry to say that I recently went from a wizard (which I've had for 18 months) to a hermes...disappointed doesn't even begin to describe my experience.
I had the 'brick' as I've come to call it, 3 days and already it's deceased.
Started getting the 'phantom taps' and now no TS at all.
Rebooted a dozen times and it just wont get past the screen alignment...in fact if you sit and watch it does it itself!
I even know what the issue is as it's been reported in the past but you'd think HTC would've sorted it by now.
HTC are palming off shonky goods as cutting edge.....really disapointed.
Did you flash a custom ROM onto it? Is it a hardware problem? In any case, it's covered by a warranty, you probably just got a defective unit. IMO, the upgrade from my wizard to hermes was a HUGE difference in performance and I'd never go back.
hardware related
Its hardware related....as the device gets warm (probably room temperature!) the screen expands and the TS membrane is pinched. All kinds of fun ensues!
There's no warranty on it..so it wont be going back.
Chalk another one up to experience.
if you have no warranty then you prob didn't pay much and you prob didn't get a new unit, and you prob didn't even get from a reputable place....so buyer beware...if the deal was to good to be true it prob was and did you ever think to ask yourself why the unit was for sale in the first place.
Assume a lot dontcha
It's brand new...from a friend who upgraded almost immediately to a HTC Touch.
You are correct though - didn't cost me a bean - shame my wizard's already gone....
oh..and while you're at it...get off yer high horse!
Assuming that I'm a dumb hick who'll buy anything that's cheap is a bit insulting..

If it's brand new from a friend, why not have him simply return the unit as defective??? Besides, just because you aren't the original buyer doesn't mean there is no warranty...
I have both a Wizard and a Hermes. Apart from the Wizard feeling like it is more rugged when it's in your hand, the Hermes is superior in every other way. And when you load WM6 onto the Hermes, it just blows the Wizard away completely.
If you know enough about this device to know that the innards are "expanding" and that something is being pinched by this, it sounds like you've taken it apart.
You're clearly not telling us the whole story in any case. If you ever want real advice for fixing your Hermes instead of just venting and not telling us what you've done to it to cause these problems, a lot of people here will be happy to help you.
BTW, I've found that doing a soft reset after charging it does a lot for any heat problems if this is truly the only problem you're having.
...several screen alignment "fixes" available on this website...
Lay off the guy
Look folks, the 'phantom tap' is a known and documented hardware issue with Hermes and has nothing to do with where/how/when/why the unit was acquired, nor for how much. Wise up (and shut up if you don't know what you're talking about).
To the OP: Don't give up so easily. In my experience HTC tracks the warranty by serial number. Call them and insist on an RMA. I was successful in getting one fixed free of charge. And guess what... I bought it on ebaY, and the warranty seal had been broken!
Btw, it's not the touch screen. Been there, replaced it, didn't fix it.
Thanks vp3G

Thanks for that man!
As it turns out the device was still under warranty and it's been returned...just waiting for it to come back!
Funnily enough when I had it the first time, the rom I put on it was your 'Black Satin'! Nice ROM, particularly the file explorer replacement!
Personally I didn't see much in the way of difference between the hermes and the wizard....but I did have it only for three days.
When I get it back I and test it out a bit more, I will gladly eat my words if it out performs the old wizard.
Anyway, I wasn't slating the hermes in itself..many of my friends have one p )..it was HTC themselves for still selling devices to consumers with a known fault.
Andy.

One dud BMW doesn't make BMW's bad cars. You got a dud, plain and simple. Return it for one that works.
HTC has impressed me, especially lately as they are trying to "redesign" the interface for windows mobile to make it actually usable.
BMWs are incredibly bad cars for the price they are sold for.

It's a valid gripe, IMO. The problem you experienced is certainly 'hush-hush' with them.
@vp3G
aaah....I thought it was your rom because of the nifty splash screens!
I was considering getting a kaiser but I think I will play it safe and wait until it's been 'in the field' for a while...
See you later,

So my second replacement of this galaxy s still got the ass-paining GPS problem. I had to phone orange again complaining the problem. Orange refused to exchange a different phone for me and told me to go find samsung. But I insisted that the phone was a part of the service they provided, if I was not satisfied I would have to go to them. they finally agreed to give me a third replacement to see what's going on. I'm now waiting at home for the phone to come. Although I doubt I would see any difference on this one, let's say according to law I now have right to return this phone if it's still got the GPS issue.
After I spoke to Orange, I sent an email to samsung mobile uk to tell them the problem. Today I received an email reply:
"Thank you for contacting Samsung Electronics.
Regarding your case, kindly note that the phone needs to be taken to the nearest Samsung authorized service centre to be checked by an engineer as this may be a software issue.
You can follow the link below to locate the nearest Samsung authorized service centre based on your postal code. Kindly make sure that you have selected “Mobile phones” from the drop down menu.
http://www.samsung.com/uk/support/location/supportServiceLocation.do?page=SERVICE.LOCATION
Please note that if this turns outto be a hardware issue, the phone might have to be sent in for repair.
Our manufacturer warranty covers damage caused due to a manufacturer fault and excludes any damage caused by misuse. Please make sure that your phone has not been dropped or exposed to water."
Now I have 2 options. after I receive this final replacement, if it's still got the GPS issue, I can either ask Orange to return the phone and exchange, which I think would be quite tricky, but a good chance to succeed; or I can go to local samsung service and ask them to check and repair the phone for me.
I checked samsung service location, basically it's on every carphonewarehouse store, not difficult to find one near you. I think people with gps issue should really go to ask for repair.
I will keep update this thread until either the phone's got fully functioning GPS or the phone's been returned.
UPDATE: NO 6th replacement has been proved having GPS problem as well. Contacted orange again and they told me they will start an investigation on what's with this phone. Next monday they will call me back to provide a solution, either fix the phone's GPS or exchange me a different phone.
Today I went out on highway, tested gps on both galaxy s and orange san francisco, within 30 mins driving the orange san francisco worked like a charm, no delay, no flaw; galaxy s on the other hand, lost signal for more than 6 times, showed me driving out of the highway...really upset and thought it only fair if gps performance should be better on galaxy s due to much much higher price. Well it's opposite... I would be glad if monday they exchange me a different phone and put an end to the terrible experience i had with this phone...
I am on my fourth handset at the moment and it’s just as bad as my first. I have tried every combination of firmware and fixes but have seen little improvement.
I am now waiting for Vodafone to release their Froyo build officially and when flashed to this it’s going back permanently. Its blatant false advertising and misrepresentation to claim the i9000 is capable of running satnav apps properly. And yes I’m talking about full satnav not just Google apps.
Such a shame as I was so looking forward to CM6 on this handset.
Not exactly relevant, but "final solutions" aren't always successful
Someone needs to amend the title of this thread, as once again its very misleading!

i'm not sure what's misleading? the solution is to send it back for repair or replace. no one can fix it on his own. you think you can come out a better solution than mine? welcome to try!
I had similar problems with Samsung galaxy S Unlocked sim free.
This is now a distant memory since the official upgrade to Android 2.2.
GPS works excellent.
Check in Samsung Kies, if your phone is ready for an upgrade.

Don't you think that if the solution was to simply exchange the phone for another that people would of done this allready, let alone the number of people on handset #4,5,6 and still their gps is not as expected.
Your title reads "Final solution", what you gonna do if samsung cant fix it? Do you have any evidence they can?
I dont wanna start an argument or cause any offence but the first thing people will think when they see that title is that contained in this thread is a solution to their gps problems. Instead all they will find is a post from you explaining what samsung and orange have advised.
Also you made another thread stating that the gps problems cannot be fixed by software, and yet in your first post in this thread you've put samsung think its a software problem.
You seem to be believing whoever u talk too and then posting it up for us.
If and when you do finally get a working gps then post away, but there is no need for misleeding posts, etc.
Have you guys tried this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=728611 ? It worked for me.

I'm not believing anything ok? I did quote the whole email from samsung service, but I didn't believe the "software" part. What I'm trying to say is get your device back to samsung as soon as possible to have it fixed. If samsung cannot fix it? law says you can return it!
again as I'm saying, the quote from samsung service is just to remind people, contact their local samsung service to check the phone! why are you focusing on the mentioned "software problem"? OK even yes it's software problem, can you fix it? you obviously can't! then what? live with it? hell not for me! contact your local samsung service to get it fixed! that's the final solution to this GPS problem! all I'm saying is if you can't fix it, you have to send it to samsung service, and that's the only final solution!
also as you might be interested, the Orange staff I spoke to told me the following thing: when I sent my phone back, they didn't just accept everything I said, they did test the phone. According to their technician, there's something wrong with the integrated GPS.
can you fix the GPS? no you can't. I can't either. my solution will be send it to samsung so that they can repair it for me. why are you calling it misleading? my solution has a great chance to get the gps fixed!!!and if not, you've proved it's not fixable and you can return or exchange your phone!
We seem to have differant understandings of the world solution.
Fair enough samsung might be able to fix it. But i doubt it as everybody else would have done the same thing or samsung would have released some sort of press release.
And yes if they cant then you should be entitled to a refund/exchange, etc. But that aint a final solution in any sense of the word.
so youre exchanging the phone over and over and hope to have a better gps? did not realized by now that they all have fhe same gps and they all work the same so still exchanging? is the world going nuts?

well in my opinion, I paid for a fully functional phone, if even the manufacturer cannot fix it, there is no way I can accept it and return/exchange it is the only solution for me.
maybe you think this is not a solution, but it does solve my problem.
so far I don't know how many have sent their phones back, but I think it might be a huge number.

as there are many people claiming that their GPS work flawlessly, also someone claimed manufacturing dates may decide the quality of the phones, I am trying to prove either of them. even these aren't true, at least I prove that this issue won't be fixed by exchanging phones and I get my legal right to force the phone company to exchange/refund the phone for me. Also if many people do the same thing, the number of returned phones would become so large that samsung might finally have to admit this and file a recall.
this is harmless to all consumers, why not?
So why do several people have a good GPS in their SGSes. If it were hardware problem, how does it come that some people can change phone for 4 times and not get any better results and others have good GPSes from the start? I start to lean towards the idea that the SGS GPS is not great but normal. People have the idea that the phone should have an equally good GPS as for example the screen witch is superb. Well they start to test the GPS and depending on several parameters (not the weather as seems to be a common misunderstanding) the GPS breaks down or they could not get an instant position within 1-2 meters (which is impossible with a cold or semi cold start if you do not have a cruise missile handy). They start fiddling around and mess up the GPS so it do not work at all.
The urban canyon problem that many refers to is a problem that even the high end dedicated GPSes have (look for reviews on the net). They are of course better then the SGS but heck you bought a phone not a GPS.
I do not say that there are no faulty SGSes out there. But so what there have been 7 million sold and there must be some. I also think that the SGS may be hiding the full potential somewhere deep in the hardware and it can be unlocked by some low level upgrade of the GPS. However I am content with the normal function of the GPS and of course I hope that future upgrades can make it better.
However there are evidently some trolls in these GPS forums which you can see if you reading all the mails. However there are not many, but they are rather irritating, in the sense that they will not listen to arguments and even if you show them a good track (which have been posted several times) they will deny it and accuse the user of incompetence instead of trying to find out why there phone is broken.

I did GPS test fairly and equally. I have another coupla phones, san francisco, hero and touch diamond. I use them all at the same time. SGS is the only one has problem. Clear?
the 4 SGS I got all have the same issue, in the mean time my other models (san francisco, hero, touch diamond) all work great. Does this make sense to you how bad GPS on SGS is? So I replace it 3 times, so what? I just need it to be as good as my other phones. is it too much to ask?
milsjg, we dont expect sgs gps to be better than a dedicated gps device such as tomtom. We just want it to be as gps of some other phones, even some 2 years old nokia phones are much better on that. Thats the problem

But why do lots of people have fairly good GPSes? You have to try to answer that question before you are pursing your answer. I have a fairly good (not exceptional missile good) GPS and I have posted several good tracks using different programs.
I also not an idiot and VERY familiar with GPS and programming. I do not mean to insult you if you are not trolling but just telling everybody that all SGS has a faulty GPS because you have had bad experience is not special good idea if you want to keep out of the trolling zone. I just searched for Iphone "GPS problem" on the net and found several links to GPS problems on the iPhone. So recommending from your experience to buy for example iPhone or any other phone in order to be happy with the GPS is very dangerouse.
The Htc Hero link below may clarify my point. Read if you dear because you have a faulty GPS on your Hero according to the link and there plenty more of that on the net. Get the drift?

I don't know to be fair. That's why I keep asking my contract provider to replace it for me. I thought if that's something about luck, replacing it as many times as I can could finally get me a working one. But... so far I have 4 in a row all bad GPS. Guess I'm just not lucky at all...
Other than replacing it, I don't know what else I can do to solve this problem. I like this phone and not until final stage will I return it. So far I'm just trying so hard to get one with good GPS. If you have any positive idea please let me know. I only care about this phone's GPS, the link you posted has nothing to do with my GPS issue.

also where are you? I'm really curious how good your phone's GPS is. If you live in UK, would you mind come over to my place and show me?
I live in Manchester. If anyone has a SGS with fully functioning GPS, could you contact me and let me see how good your GPS is? I'm really interested to know if "Good GPS" really exists.
