Having updated the ROM via HTC's website ( version 1.23.405.103 ) on my P3600 and installing Trinityhacks, I still cannot get the GPS icon to appear ( let alone the GPS itself) in the SETTINGS;SYSTEM menu, it only began to appear in the CONNECTIONS menu after i installed Trinityhacks.
I have 2 GPS programs (one of which is TOMTOM) which are installed and working perfectly, the only problem is that the GPS is not, and i can't figure out why! Please help,

You don't need the GPS Setting CPL unless you want to change the default settings, which for most apps shouldn't be necessary.
Make sure in TomTom, you set the GPS prefs to Built-IN GPS Receiver (if you are on V6.03) or Other NMEA Receiver (NOT Other NMEA Bluetooth Receiver) if you use any earlier version.
COM port must be set to COM9 and Baud to 57600.
Once those are set, the GPS screen within TomTom should show a small revolving icon in the upper right part of the screen. Within about 30 seconds, the main screen should change from No GPS Device, to Waiting for a valid Signal. At that point you need to go outside with a clear view of the sky for a 1st fix.
If you continue to get the No GPS Device message, it suggests either the ROM didn't update properly, or there is a hardware fault.
Thank you for your help, It now all works after a hard reset, and have been playing with the GPS ever since. Great fun.
The icon is no problem and it not being there wont affect you much,
If you do want it, the easiest way to display it without modifying the resistry is to install an tweaking application like ' Trinity Hacks v2'. this is an excellant wee application that lets you easily make all kinds of settign adjustments without going into the registry.
If you do a search on the trinity forums its easy to find.

I upgraded my Hermes with Schap's Windows Mobile 6 ROM. Works fine so far. But when I try to use my Bluetooth GPS it acts strange.
I paired the Bluetooth device and set up a COM-port for the applications. The first time it works. The next time, when I switch on Bluetooth and start for example TomTom, the Hermes tells me there is a new Bluetooth device that wants to connect. I checked and found out the GPS is still in the list of known Bluetooth devices and the COM-port is set. But the assistant is still bugging until I add the "new" device. After that of course my "old" device is gone.
How can I avoid this? Anyone experiencing the same problem?

On your Hermes:
Have you tried to checked off: "Make this device visible to other devices"?
Under: Start\Settings\Connections\Bluetooth\Mode (2nd tab on the bottom)
Option #1 (Hermes)
~If, "Make this device visible to other devices is not enabled, delete the pairing for your GPS.
~Check off "Make this device visible to other devices"
~Pair your GPS again (ensure that "Make this device visible to other devices" is still enabled)
Option #2 (GPS)
Don't know what kind of settings for bluetooth you may have on your GPS. I found for my car stereo, that I needed to leave it, in the "waiting/open for connection mode.
Now when I turn the car on it automatically connects the phone and stereo off my Hermes.
What I'm basically saying here is there may be a setting to leave your GPS automatically open for bluetooth connections?
I think option #1 may do the trick....

If your concerned about Security you can always change the Pairing codes.
and or turn off bluetooth when not needed.
I'm unaware of any cases where one can connect unless there paired, so in most cases access needs to be allowed on both ends, usually needing pairing codes. Even if it is one way, an approval code will still be needed.
What I found is this, if you want automatic connecting with one way pairing codes i.e. (Car Stereo to PDA or GPS to PDA) You'll need to allow "make device visible" checked off. The usual cause is a memory storing issue with the GPS or Car Stereo. I know that on high end Stereo's and GPS's they have on board memory which will save connection settings, where you'd put pairing codes on both ends and it will save the settings, thus negating the need to leave visible.

OK, plenty of tom tom, igo, naviman, laviman threads. This one is for general GPS issues...for example goolemaps and igo are moaning about lack of GPS, ive tried turning of bluetooth thinking that thats taken up some come ports etc but no joy.
I've reset and can get it working from time to time so not total failure
Thoughts, suggestions etc?

settings->GPS->software(first tab)->define a com port, your choice
->hardware (second tab)->leave this port at none
->advanced (third tab) -> CHECK, auto manage
in google maps, set software to let windows manage your gps automatically.
if this solves the problem, we can talk about igo, if not, it's something else

Noticed someone has the same on the igo thread
to me the gps Hardware works absolutely fine. I am shocked in seeing that MN7 reports 7 satellites inside the house, even if not stable, and that HDOP outside building is an amazing 1.1 meters with 9 satellites being received. quickgps is also great, BTW.
The only issue (see navigon thread) is that Navigon doesn't keep the gps port alive....but i found a workaround. Works perfectly with TomTom, but TomTom doesn't want to sell you TT7 so....byebye TomTom
I have observed some flakiness with GPS when you let programs just figure out the settings for themselves.
For example, TomTom would keep aquiring and then dropping the GPS fix every few seconds - when there should have been a good 11-satellite lock.
After I configured all apps to force them to use COM4 at 4800bps (as configured in Settings-> System -> "External GPS Settings"), I've had no more problems.

This SHOULD be the way to configure. what happening is:
by doing the settings->GPS, OS takes over the actual GPS hardware, and channel the data to a virtual software port (the port on the first tab, say port 4).
by default TomTom is set to "use built-in GPS" which is the actual hardware, so TomTom and Windows Mobile are fighting over control of the actual hardware, the only way to resolve is to time-slice (share) the hardware-> you get 1 second use of it and i get 1 second use of it. this is why if you set to use com4, it will actually work BETTER.
google maps and live search were developed closely with windows mobile, when you set to use "auto gps" in these two applications, these to software actualy passes the handle to windows mobile operating system, and let the OS auto configure. so even though on the surface those two apps are showing auto-manage (despite the similar naming from the settings->gps 3rd tab), they are actually letting the OS auto-manage, and behind the scene, the software is pointing to the software port (com 4) you have set in the settings->gps.
Can't change hardware port
I am able to change hardware port and baud rate on settings-external gps, but those do not get saved. When I open settings-external gps again, hardware port always goes back to none/4800. My IGO8 still seems to get a lock relatively quickly those
I've noticed that disabling the A-GPS solve the "repeated get fix / loose fix" issue. Also, disabling the GPS logging with Schaps' advanced utilities helps the GPS work smoother.

What tool do you use to disable A-GPS?
You can use Schaps Advanced Configuration Tool (http://www.touchxperience.com/).
The relevant settings are under the 'GPS' section.
You need to have .NET Compact Framework 3.5 installed for the app to work.

There is an application called GPSTest which I have used before and it works on the HD.
I have used this also in the past on a Tytn II that was no behaving right with TomTom (turned out it was TT misbehaving again!)
I have version 1.04 from http://www.chartcross.co.uk/products/WM00002_details.asp
This is freeware.
When I run it the result is COM4 & 9800 Baud.

I guess the question I have is whether it is worth doing? Right now I have software port enabled to COM4, no hardware port, and A-GPS enabled. If I disable A-GPS, and change settings to hardware port (e.g. com4/9600), does my gps performance improve?

I almost have the same problem. Just got my HD this morning and wanted to try GPS, but there is even no Settings=GPS icon. When I tried the Google Maps, it did not find any GPS hardware. This was not a problem of being in a clear sky, there is something wrong as no GPS is recognized to start with. Would anyone be able to point us to the right direction please.

hmm, tried gps test had gps one minute and not the next

I had the same problem, in 5 nav apps, gps hardware drops every few secs and come back again.
Tried reg edit (buffers, com ports, etc) portforwarders, standing on my head, nothing.
Solved by doing full back-up, hard reset. all was well. put back-up back, without reg offcourse, still worked fine.
just had to do some work because of lost reg settings, like settings for some progs..

Dude, this backup...you talking ROM re-install or backup of data like contacts and then hard reset?
Obtained Fuze two days ago and had a BT GPS receiver that I wanted to use. Took me two days of searching and finally trying non-intuitive procedure to get the connection to go through.
Step 1
Make a BT connection between the BT GPS receiver and Fuze.
Step 2
Afterwards go to Settings -> Bluetooth -> “COM Ports” Tab -> Select “New Outgoing Port” -> select “Telenav” -> Next -> Select “COM1” -> make sure “Secure Connection” has a tick mark -> Finish
Step 3
Fire up Live Search or whatever GPS app floats your boat.
In settings, be sure that COM1 is selected for the port.
All done.
Enjoy.
BTW: BT GPS receiver is telenav brand which I picked up from Best Buy- when I picked up it was 50 USD- on clearance, I have seen it now for 25 USD. Go get em while ya can.

Just curious, why did you want to connect an external GPS over the internal? Is battery consumption on the internal GPS higher than the BT connection? Slow to acquire fix? Not able to get a GPS fix exactly where the phone needs to be when you're using navigation software?
I didn't want to add an additional drain on the Fuze's battery by using the internal GPS receiver. From what I remember reading, an internal GPS receiver will suck up as much battery as the LCD on the device.
A BT connection should be less of a battery drain than an internal GPS drain- I'll have to look it up to confirm it.
You can use the TBattery app posted here (battery.zip)
It will give you a real time readout of current draw in mAh.. so you can compare values directly
So my FUZE with GPSone (and in airplane mode) it draws around 220mAh.
With my QStarz BT-1000X (only BT on) it draws 180mAh.
A bluetooth GPS definitely drains your battery less then the internal but is it worth the time you spent figuring out how it works?
Why don't you use a car charger to keep your phone "alive" more? That's what I do...
hmmm... when i had my Dell x51v and a BT GPS, what i had to do was
(assuming starting afresh, no other pairings)
1) Pair with authentication (enter the passkey on your BT GPS
2) Set up an outgoing COM port (usually it's COM7 or COM8)
3) Go to Settings>Hardware>External GPS
-- Internal GPS port (for GPS software) - COM4
-- Hardware GPS port (for BT GPS) ----- what you set in (2)... COM7 or COM8... BAUD rate according to your BT GPS
-- Allow auto management of GPS
4) Start your BT GPS, BT on your device, go to your GPS software and edit it to connect via COM4... if it fails, then use the com port in (2)

HD2 has built in GPS antenna which is great to use in most cases, but not in every case. Some time, while in the car for example, I would rather use external bluetooth GPS device. I know this is possible to use external GPS antenna and even set it up on my device for TomTom . However it was not a one click solution, plus, I do not remember exactly what I have done and how to reverse it... As a result, my TomTom only works with external BT GPS antenna (can't make it to use internal one) and NaviComputer uses internal GPS antenna (can't make it to use external one).
What I am looking for is an easy selector for GPS device. It would have several options:
1. Internal GPS
2. External BT GPS 1
3. External BT GPS 2
4. ... if needed
and more if needed. User could with one click of the button tell WM device what device to use for all apps that need GPS. Furthermore, if I select external BT GPS device, it could also automatically enable BT on the phone, which is normally disabled to save battery.
Is it possible? Or am I wishing too much?
I don't know if there is a unversal solution. I think all apps that use gps default to the gps module in the phone.
as for tomtom, go to Change Preferences > Configure GPS > Configure and then you can choose which module to use.

After those settings, my internal GPS is no longer working in TomTom. I have, of course, tried to go to Preferences > Configure GPS > Configure and chose built in GPS but that didn't help.
Anyway, I think I could spend some time reversing what I have done in the first place and get TomTom to use internal GPS again, but that is not the point. What I would like to have is an easy Switch On/Off button for External GPS, so that I would never need to remember all those setting changes and be able to do it with a click of the button....
You could try GPSGate (http://gpsgate.com/products/gpsgate_client), it's not free but you can set all your programs to use the GPS gate port then use GPS gate to switch between your BT/Internal GPS in one "bulk setting". Then you only need to change one program each time and all your nav programs will be updated.
