Figured out the culprit behind a minor annoyance I have with my dopod CHT9000... after soft reset, backlight timeout (battery) ALWAYS resets to 10-seconds. I prefer 1-minute.
Source of problem is software-based soft-resets:
Using either WisBar Lite's "Soft Reset" or PHM's freeware app reset.exe always resets to 10-seconds.
Using the hardware soft reset switch (insert stylus, push) ALWAYS leaves timeout setting untouched.
So long one-handed soft resets...
I'm using xda trion with PHM's soft reset program but don't have the problem you mentioned.
I can also confirm the issue but I'm not sure whether it's connected to the soft reset. I had the WM screen lock in focus which I think sets the backlight off time to 10 seconds but I'm not a 100% sure. Maybe the setting stays if you softreset while the screen lock is on.
im having the same issue but i dont use any of those programs... actually mine started right after the radio upgrade to 1.20... i havent installed any new programs, just using the same setup... only thing i did was downgrade to the 1.04 bootloader only then flashed 1.20 radio.. i can go and change the time out, but as soon as it does that it resets back to 10 seconds

When I apply a soft reset to my wizard, (T-Mobile 2.24 Beta ROM found here on the the site), the backlight settings, (battery power), reverts to turning off the backlight at 10 seconds. I can change the settings and they stick until the next soft reset. Any thoughts/hacks/fixes?
(I searched the forums and did not find this solution, so please be gentle if I am asking something I should have found...I try to read as much as possible on this wonderful site. Made a lot of improvements to my MDA through reading and learning but I could not find this one).
I have the exaxt same problem ever since I installed SPB Gprs Monitor. Any chance you also have it?
Nope, so we both have a common culprit. Either the ROM or our apps...
I have:
Registry Wizard, 1.0U
Space Reclaimer
PHM Tray
Smartskey
OmapClock
Eten Dialer
TCPMP
eReader
Sompy Weather
Magic Button
Vade Mecum
Quickreset
Anything in common? Or does anyone else know what causes this bug?
Actually, I misread your post! I don't have this problem. My settings remain after a soft reset. In my case the screen goes blank (or should I say black!) after a soft reset (backlight slider all the way to the left).
We have TCMP and omapclock in common, so I guess you can eliminate those two from your list of potential culprits to your problem
Anyone else with a comment? It's been happening to a colleague of mine as well, again, after we installed the TMobile 2.24 Beta ROM.
We've had this problem with 15 devices we purchased earlier this year - all but 2 are running the TMO USA stock ROM, the others are running the 2.21 custom ROM... but ALL of them will reset the backlight timer to 10 seconds on a soft reset.
Very, very annoying...
Have you checked the content of your \windows\startup folder? You may have some program there that does it. I had another problem with my custom today background picture disappearing afeter each reset and I found out that it was a startup ptogram (custtdstk) that did the trick
I am getting a new one soon...so we will see if that fixes things, (although my colleague will not be getting one). Did anything fix the 15 devices?
Hi , I'm having the same problem as pat12 after sleep or timeout the backlight slider is all the way to the left, has anyone found a fix for this ?
thx paparoach
UPDATE: not sure if this is the fix for everyone but I upgraded to Mr. Clean's 224a rom and now it works, I'm now reloading my apps.
I've tried wiping everything out of the startup folder, doesn't seem to help at all.
Hoping TMO fixes this with their AKU2 ROM for the MDA.
Is anyone here NOT using SPB backup and still getting the problem?
Are you sure none of you are using Goodlink? It has had a known bug that everytime the unit was reset, and the Goodlink launcher was run, it would reset the backlight to 10 seconds. It was finally fixed with client version 4.9.

I'm definately not using goodlink
That was my issue, Goodlink. I had orphaned this post but now that you mention it, since the upgrade, the issue has stopped. Thanks for the confirmation.
Same thing here - as soon as we upgraded to the 4.9 client, the backlight timeout would no longer reset.
GldRush98 has supplied the fix for this and so I've posted it here on his behalf as he replied on a seperate thread which was running for the same problem.
"The device lock feature causes this bug.
If you don't want it to do that any more you have to do 2 things.
1) Turn off device lock
2) Change the registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\Backlight\Locklevel\
Change the "LockLevel" value to "0".
Then your phone will remember your backlight settings again."
Once again many thanks to GldRush98
Oh wow, so in order to get rid of this bug, we have to switch off the single most important feature on the device?
There's got to be a better way...
No, instead of coming up with a sarcastic comment try it..it works! and no features are switched off
Sorry
But you do mean the Settings--Personal--Lock don't you? The one that you set a password for? If you have to disable this, first of all I won;t get any email from my Exch box any more, and 2nd someone's bound to nick it and see all the dirty txts I've got on it... deffo a case for Max Clifford!

Hi.
My wizard locks up as it loads the today screen after a soft reset
I sometimes have to soft reset it 10 - 20 times before i get a working today screen. I think it's due to applications that are on there starting all at the same time.
It gets really annoying sometimes when i cannot use my phone for 10 minutes or more.
I've got a mixture of applications starting including phm traylaunch, Resco today plugin, the tomtom today launcher, the radio display plugin and a few others off and on
Have disabled them one by one and nothing seems to help reliably.
once the today screen starts properly, the phone works perfectly until the next soft reset.
Does anyone have a solution for this ?
thanks,
malty
Hi,
Had this problem on my Hermes where the backlight timeout is always reset to 10secs no matter what i set it to once i perform a soft-reset (by poking the reset hole at the bottom). I've tried editing the registry entry directly, flash back to the manufacturer's default ROM etc but with mixed results.
What eventually worked for me is this:
Change your backlight settings but soft-reset using software instead of poking the reset hole. I used Tweaks2k2 to perform the soft-reset but any other tool should work.
In case you are wondering what is my registry type -- i'm already using a File-based registry rather than Hive. (see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=767833 for more info).
Anyone has any alternative solutions that works?
cheers!
Patrick
Hi Patrick... bizarre -- my device exhibits the same annoying reset to 10-seconds, but only when using software reset, not hardware. What software are you using to soft reset? I've used both PHM Reset.exe and Wisbar Lite v1.1.0.7...
If I use the stylus to soft-reset, then the 'on battery' backlight timeout remains at 1-minute (where I like it).
I wondered what in the hell was causing this. A few searches couldn't find it.
I thought it was high cpu usage or something..

Hi aquaut88,
Hmm, that's interesting. I have the opposite effect when i use soft reset via hardware. I'm using Tweaks2k2 for my soft-reset now. Did you check ur registry type setting (hive vs file) to see if that makes a diff?
It was set at (1). I changed it to (0) and still same behaviour, so switched it back to (1). It seems to have to do with something installed (Maybe Resco Explorer?) Cheers

Hmm.. I have Resco Explorer installed too. Doesn't seem to be the culprit here.
I had the same problem until I removed Voicecommand 1.6.
When I loaded Voicecommend 1.6 to my 8525 it did something that re-locked my Ext Rom and was causing serval other problems like the backlight changing back to 10 sec. I am not sure if it was all the hacks I had to make to make VC 1.6 work or a semi-failed install.
But I finally hard reset my phone and reloaded everything but used Voicecommand 1.5 and have not had the problem since.
i also have this problem. but i am not sure what causes it.
it is a strange problem, after a hard reset my backlight settings remain as what I selected it to be. be after i install some apps, then the problem arises. I am not sure of which app(s) cause the problem. to find out i have to install each app after a HR and test to islate the culprit.
8525 - 10sec backlight problem also.
Having the SAME EXACT problem guys! My 8525 is also constantly switching back to a 10sec timeout on the backlight display. I do have Resco Explorer too, but I doubt its the problem. I've been reseting w/ the bottom-hole, but will try doing it via software.
Does anyone else have any real fixes though? This is making me CRAZY!!!
This seems related to restoring from a backup. It has happened to me twice after restoring from SPB Backup on my Universal.
The first time I hard-reset and reinstalled everything. The problem went away.
This weekend I had to restore from backup after a freeze and the problem came back (but not immediately). I think it occurs after a backup and after changing settings in the Settings applets (not sure which one).
I think it is a error in the driver. I get a related problem with the brightness. One of my own programs sets the brightness but strangely after a while it always goes back to the 3rd bar. It makes no difference if I lower the brightness using the backlight control, it will always end up on 3. If I make it brighter it seems to stay where I put it.

I concur. While not using Hermes, I am using a Samsung SGH-i607 (Blackjack) and after having to restore a back-up from Sprite, I started having this same issue. From everything that I have read, it seems that a hard reset and starting from scratch is the only true fix.
What good are the back-up programs if they leave your phone in this state? Kinf of sucks not feeling safe about being able to restore a back-up in the even it is needed.
i have been using battery status to fix my timeout at 30 seconds.. fixed my problem

Thats what did it for me too.
I have the same broblem. after "spb backup" restore backlight timout goes to 10sec. I had the same problem before on anotrer wm6 rom, and it starts after "spb backup" system restore too
I was just getting ready to hard reset my 8525, but before I uninstall Spb Backup from my SD and install new version (v1.6.3) on device memory to properly save my data, and ........?? problem disapears with it self..
I think problem was in non proper intsallation of backup program (on Micro SD).
now averything is ok without any hard reset
it keeps working normally only if I turn off device without lock.....
Following installation Backlight stuck @ 10sec WM v6.1
Thank you, downloaded latest Tweak2k2, installed and selected soft reset.
Backlight setting now perfect
“Contingency WM6.1 Backlight stuck at 10sec”.
Tried Trial version Tweak2k2 PPC Soft Reset and three attempts recognise this is only a temporary solution to "Contingency WM6.1 Backlight Stuck at 10sec” .
Telephoned HTC UK service, Sebastian says that If a hard reset fails to correct backlight contingency Kaiser will have to go to repair. Sebastian says that HTC do not provide Registry settings and customers that do change registry settings negate their warranty.
Request transfer to supervisor. Dan head of support says that I am the first customer with this contingency and that I need to do a hard reset and if contingency continues the Kaiser will need return to HTC for repair.
PS Thankfully HTC do not sell cars or bicycles as they would also say mending punctures negated the car or bicycle warranty!
Can someone help me... I installed the Helmi wm6 Rom and did not let sprint customization run. The device works fine for several days then it will freeze and i have to do a soft reset. Problem is that after the soft reset i only get to the wm splash screen. i wind up doing a hard reset to recover. I use spd back up to restore my files but its becoming a pain. Is this a known bug? Is there another rom release i should be using instead. The slideout keyboard also seems to have a bug when using to type a document. there is a 1-2 second lag in pressing of keys and letters appearing on screen.
In my experience I have noticed that when active sync is still running on my apache, (or it has only been unplugged from my pc for a few minutes,) and I soft reset or change the battery, it will lock up and only a hard reset will fix it. go to settings> system> memory> running programs and stop active sync before a soft reset. seems to work for me
I used helmi's stock WM6 rom when it first came out, and I was plagued with the green screen hang. I've been using rob mayer's WM6 ROMs for months and no hangs. Go get it:
http://intribit.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=2
It seems to be kind of a hit-and-miss situation.... with more misses than hits....
I'm using Helmis AKU3.5 "final"?? rom that he did (before the "service pack") and it works amazingly... except for the fact that i'm scared sh!tless to perform a soft reset if anything locks up.
The freeze occurs after the HTC boot screen switches to the Windows Mobile loading screen (that green one)...
I have a feeling that it has something to do with the HTC home screen which has been mentioned on a forum or 2 on the net but im sick of searching.... which i love to use coz of the eye candy and has links to things i don't use... and the audio manager which i use flawlessly (sort of) with my moto-s9 BT stereo headphones with a few regedits...
But more to the point when i soft reset it freezes. And no matter how many soft resets i try.... and i have tried many (10+) soft resets during a meeting... and leaving it to load (which I have left for over 2 hours one time) to no avail... in the end i have to hard reset and restore all my settings/software.
Please let me know of any fixes to this as i would like to use the home plugin.
I have so far soft reset three times in succession during this posting with the HTC home today screen plugin disabled and have had no freezing.
Software version:
Radio: 1.30.00
Windows Mobile: 3.50.00 (Helmi's one that u dont need kitchening software for)
Apache telecom NZ
yeah figured it out, updated to helmi's wm6.1 using the kitchening program u guys rock!!!!
