a few questions about the phone software and in general - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam General

Ok, I just picked up a cingular 8525 today and had a few questions I wanted to ask you guys.
First, I was told there is a program out there that closes down the programs when you click the x instead of minimizing it. Where can I find this program?
Second, is there an AIM client for this phone that I can get somewhere? Is it free? Please post any links for that.
Third, do any of you have any second thoughts about putting the phone directly in your pocket with nothing else in there? I am wondering how safe it is for this phone to be in just a pocket. I was looking at perhaps one of those hard metal cases for it, but as a student and person I like my phone in my pocket. What solutions can you folks offer?
Thanks a lot

As to keeping in pocket, I wouldn't for fear of developing the Screen Alignment problem. I use leather pouch mine came with.

Here's a few mostly freeware. Lots of rubbish in these but some maybe worth it. Better ones, say doom etc just lookup with WM5 (or windows CE) added into a search on Google.

if you tick and hold on the file it will bring up your options like copy/paste, etc.. it will also give you the option to set as ringtone

Keep my new Cingular 8525 in my pocket with my Monaco Aluminum Case from Dealone. No problems, all buttons accessible and if keyboard is needed, simply pop open cover and slide top forward. Black in color. I really like the protection and peace of mind this case gives.

If you put the MP3 file in \Windows\Rings it will show in your list of available ringtones.

This is right of course, as is shogunmarks solution of :"if you tick and hold on the file it will bring up your options like copy/paste, etc.. it will also give you the option to set as ringtone"
Either way I prefer to keep my ringtone in device memory rather than storage card. The reason for this is that I, along with some others have discovered that storing on SD card can cause freezing when phone rings or a lengthy delay before phone begins to ring. Some others have also reported that mp3s, particularly larger file sized ones can also cause delays. On this matter I tend to stick to basic short file sized Windows Audio fornatted tones just to ensure as rapid a response from the phone as possible when calls come in. (Not very adventurous I know, but still...)

I don't disagree with you. I could have been clearer in what I said. It is possible to put ring tones on storage card and assign them without obviously putting them in the rings folder or using your way of getting them there. All I meant to do was issue a cautionary note about lengthy ring tones in non windows audio format being stored on SD card - this warning Does NOT apply to your method of assigning the ringtone.
Hope this clarifies - mind you reading it I'm not so sure!

when looking for a wifi network is there some sort of browser to use so you can choose which one? also how do you clean the screen on the phone? rubbing alcohol and a water mix?

Good app. to connect to and see available wifi networks
http://www.kasuei.com/hitchhiker/
Wifi on radar type screen or list view (good to look at but doesn't really help to connect) If you are GPS enabled it shows remarkable true radar type image of networks around. With no GPS you still get radar but really only illusion of radar as it tells distance only not direction. Looks good though.

As for cleaning screen I just use a tissue barely more than damp without any chemicals - seems to work ok.

Are you happy with the PPCPE dailer?

Having had my XDA 2 now for a few weeks, and having finally worked out most of the kinks of the really inadequate bluetooth stack (by installing the widcomm stack) I am now moved to address my other annoyances: the very feature poor phone software.
I expected a very configurable phone, but was very disappointed with the microsoft dailer. The short list of features I find missing are:
No separate ring tones can be assigned to each contact. This could be very usefully, as you would know who is phoning without checking the screen.
No software to keep track of your calls or GPRS allowance. Even my old nokia from 3 years ago could do that.
No way to transfer a call from the handset to a headset. I know you can do it the other way around, why not this way too?
Very little status information on the dailer screen. Why is this, when most cell phone screens look like the status display on a jet?
Anyways, there is alot more, and people may want to add their annoyances. Im really wondering if there is any software that can replace the microsoft Dailer (like Pocketinformant replaces the pocket outlook).
Any ideas would be appreciated.
Surur
Took me a minute to know what you're talking about.
No, I hate the built-in dialer on the Pocket PC.
The author of mobidial (http://www.mobidial.com) told me there will be an XDA II version.. hopefully soon.
-arebelspy
hey,
just a few comments....
re: No separate ring tones can be assigned to each contact
- i beleive the o2 xda site has free software for download; one of which is called powercontacts. i believe it allows you to assign a ringtone to each contact. i tried it when i still had the xda1...never got it to work. so, i downloaded a trial version of ringtonex; it works like a charm and i'm able to assign individual ringtones to any contact i want. i immediately bought the software, i think it was for around 9usd. now that i'm using the xda2; the software still works great. for ringtones what i did was record the voice of my friends, officemates, my wife, and used those wav files for ringtones corresponding to their contacts. it also works in tandem with the photocontacts app in the xda2
re: No way to transfer a call from the handset to a headset
-the xda2 has bluetooth and i use it together with the bt200 headset. incoming and outgoing calls are automatically transferred to the headset.
2 cents worth.
cheers mate
robson
Transferring from phone to headset is a headset dependent thing. My HBH-65 allows me to transfer to phone and back to headset, but my Jabra wouldn't have.
Thx for the great pointers. I am definitely getting the RingtoneX app, and mobidail or something similar, when it comes out.
I just wish that developers would design more for handed use, not using a stylus, especially as bluetooth voicedailing does not work.
About transferring to a headset, I mean after you pick up a call with the XDA, transferring the call to a headset should be possible, but has not worked for me yet.
Another minor peeve, why is the sms option not on the dialler, but on the menu bar, and why is speaker phone also not on the front, but you have to press a key for it. There still needs to be alot of improvement. Hopefully independent programmers will kick in and fix all these deficiencies. It does make you wonder if the developers actually use their own devices or not...

i think it's because that most cell phones screens is their version of the today screen
i most surdenly would not wish such a confusing cluttet messy interface on my worst enemy
(yeah of cause not all cellphones are all that bad some many are)
I dont know. At least they should have the battery status on the screen, and the network logo would not be ammis either (currently its difficult to know when you have no reception, or just no reception)
Alot of the stuff thats currently in the task bar could also be bigger icons on the dailer, and it would also make it look less plain and just incomplete, as if its been thrown together at the last minute.
Surur
well not sure if it's much help but if you install some bar like advanced wisbar on your pda you'll have batt status in the bar both in today and the dialer
suppose this is a pre customised vs. free 3. party customising
some people like to set up their device with personal customising and some people want the place they buy it to handle that
in that way i suppose xda and other such devices are more like computers then std phones are
of cause if one get a xda with all the stuff in the preloaded provider rom they get more of that stuff you want
of cause thats not saying that they get enough
Ive been a user of Icbar for a long time, but as notifications is so important on a PPCPE device, and its not supported, I am not able to use it anymore. This is unfortuanate, as I enjoyed knowing what my battary status is all the time.

If you want to use your finger to dial contacts try Fingerclix by imaginet software. I used it on my Samsung I700 and now my I-Mate and it works just fine.

Just got my XDA Exex - A few questions

I just upgraded from an XDAii, and obviously there are many advantages, but also many disadvantages. Let me run through a few of my qualms and see if you can help with any.
1. Less "toolbars" in programs
For example, the photo album app in XDAii had a row of buttons for slideshow, start, stop, full screen, rotate, etc etc.... Most of this is accessible through the menu system, but full screen seems to be missing comletely.
Also the calendar comes to mind. The row of buttons for day, week, month and year was a godsend
2. speaker screech
Anything over a certain noise level seems to come though in a really piercing way that I have to hold the phoneawayfrom my ear
3. Phone pad not working in messaging
The phone pad entry method, the one that replicates the keypad of a normal mobile phone, cannot be used for the thing it would be most commonly used for - SMS messaging. WHY?!?!
4. Phone "themes" missing
Remember in the photo contacts app, where you could apply different themes to contacts when they call, like the row of carrots, or the glistening heart? What happened to that?
5. Less hardware buttons
The contacts and calendar hardware buttons have been replaced by an extra row on the screen. Yes, there are buttons on the keyboard which link to them, but that doesn't help me when trying to configure 3 control buttons in Worms, does it.
6. Add ringtones?
Ok we have ups and downs here. On the plus side, MP3 ringtones are now supported. On the flipside, you can't file them into folders, they have to place in the My Documents route directory in order to be accessible. Is there a way round this?
I hope someone can help me. Any info you can give will be much appreciated

This is an annoying one and I don't know of a fix for it. The first part is down the to album program I think, if it is just called 'Pictures' then it is the one which came with mine too and it isn't very good at all. I replaced it with Resco Photo Viewer. As for the calendar part, those buttons you mentioned are accessed through 'menu' - again, annoying and takes more time.
Anyone?
hmmmm...... oki doki, not sure if i can help.... but lets step through....
I just upgraded from an XDAii, and obviously there are many advantages, but also many disadvantages. Let me run through a few of my qualms and see if you can help with any.
BEFORE WE GET TO FAR, THERE ARE ISSUES HERE, MANY OF THEM, AND THEY MAY OUTWEIGH THE ADVANTAGES.
1. Less "toolbars" in programs
For example, the photo album app in XDAii had a row of buttons for slideshow, start, stop, full screen, rotate, etc etc.... Most of this is accessible through the menu system, but full screen seems to be missing comletely.
THE M$ VERSIONS ARE EXTREMELY CUT DOWN, BRIEF FUNCTIONALITY, AND THIS IS THE FIRST THAT DOESNT COMPARE TO PURCHASABLE OPTIONS, AND THERE ARE A VARIETY OF THEM.
IN THE END, ITS STILL OK, BUT NEXT TO USELESS.
AGREE, USE RESCO, BUT BEWARE IT IN ITSELF IS MEMORY HUNGRY FOR THE FUNCTION.
Also the calendar comes to mind. The row of buttons for day, week, month and year was a godsend
ITS STILL IN THE OPTIONS, BUT IF THAT IS YOUR ONLY COMPLAINT ON CALENDAR, THEN YOUR DOING WELL.
2. speaker screech
Anything over a certain noise level seems to come though in a really piercing way that I have to hold the phoneawayfrom my ear
DONT GET IT, GETS A BIT TINNY AT HIGH VOLUME. GS PLAYER HAS A BASE AND EQUALISER BUILT IN AND PLAYS BETTER QUALITY SOUND THAN M$, AND IS FREE.
3. Phone pad not working in messaging
The phone pad entry method, the one that replicates the keypad of a normal mobile phone, cannot be used for the thing it would be most commonly used for - SMS messaging. WHY?!?!
DIDNT YOU GET THE UNIVERSAL THAT HAD A KEYBOARD!!!???
4. Phone "themes" missing
Remember in the photo contacts app, where you could apply different themes to contacts when they call, like the row of carrots, or the glistening heart? What happened to that?
NEVER USED THEMES, STARTED TO USE PICTURES WHICH IS AVAILABLE, ALONG WITH INDIVIDUAL RING TONES (INDIVIDUALLY THOUGH, NOT BY CATEGORY WHICH IS PAINFUL WHEN YOU HAVE LOTS). CANT YOU JUST APPLY THE THEME LIKE YOU WOULD A PICTURE? INSIDE CONTACTS.
5. Less hardware buttons
The contacts and calendar hardware buttons have been replaced by an extra row on the screen. Yes, there are buttons on the keyboard which link to them, but that doesn't help me when trying to configure 3 control buttons in Worms, does it.
I ALSO APPLIED THE "VIDEO CALL" BUTTON TO CALENDAR, AND THERE IS A CUSTOMISABLE BUTTON FOR CONTACTS THAT ARE NEXT TO THE TWO SOFT KEY BUTTONS. THE MOMENT YOU GO INSIDE AN APP, THE SOFT KEYS CHANGE, AND I ALWAYS NEED QUICK ACCESS TO CONTACTS AND CALENDAR, SO IN EFFECT ON A TODAY SCREEN, I HAVE TWO BUTTONS TO ACCESS CONTACTS/CALENDAR.
6. Add ringtones?
Ok we have ups and downs here. On the plus side, MP3 ringtones are now supported. On the flipside, you can't file them into folders, they have to place in the My Documents route directory in order to be accessible. Is there a way round this?
\WINDOWS\RINGS
BUT STILL NO SUB DIRECTORIES, BUT AT LEAST THEY DONT CLUTTER A USELESS MYDOCS.
I hope someone can help me. Any info you can give will be much appreciated
AGAIN, THERE ARE MUCH GREATER ISSUES IN THE UNIVERSAL THAN THOSE MENTIONED ABOVE. I THINK IF THAT IS ALL YOU HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT, AND YOU ARE HAPPY WITH EVERYTHING ELSE, BE GRATEFUL.
I realise there are many side steps around my issues, but they're some of the thing that made me love my XDAii. Like the hardware buttons, made it so easy to use PocketSNES. You turned it sideways and instantly had a d-pad on your left, and 4 buttons on your right (just like a SNES pad). And calendar, I know it has the options on the menu, but I miss the quick functionality.
Oh, and yes my Exec obviously does have the QWERTY keypad, but this isn't always conveniant when walking, or holding many bags, or drinking in a crowded pub. The phone pad was the texting solution I've been waiting for for years, and doesn't work in the application it's needed most in :x
Thanks for informing me of the windows\rings folder. That's one bonus at least.
So what are your qualms with the Exec? I'm guessing deeper things like memory useage and stuff?
none really, I am happy thru n thru
weight n size perhaps. the price for a double thumb keyboard...
I just read a lot of negative comments and complaints and few people saying how good it is overall for price n quantity of gadgets in such a small package.
Ok, The toolbar thing is a bit annoying at first, but you get used to it and I prefer the aesthetics of a 'cleaner' looking screen without all sorts of icons at the bottom making everything look untidy (personal preference though). Lack of hardware buttons on the face of the phone when it's in PDA mode is not something I've even thought about, but I can see how it would cause issues for game-players. Bit of a shame, but I doubt if it's a consideration for many OEM's, they don't really build WM phones with gaming ergonomics as a high priority issue...
Not had problems with the speaker, and sticking ringtones in the \Windows\Rings folder is good enough for me - why would you need to sub-categorise them? Unless you have dozens of them that you change on a daily basis?
I'm interested in your comment that the "Phone pad" doesn't work in the Messaging app though? Mine works perfectly well...is this something that others have problems with? Maybe you have a dodgy ROM or something?
Oh, and I never knew that the theme could be changed depending on who was calling? Didn't that take aaaaages, and slow the response of the phone down to a crawl!?

I never knew about the windows\rings folder before posting this so that answered that one.
As for phone pad, it definitely isn't working in messaging, so I may try a newer ROM, but only if it can be downloaded from the official O2 site.
The phone themes, did indeed slow it down, but I thought rather than exclude them they'd work on it and make them better.

Okay here's my challenge to you...
I came across this link over at XDA:
http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=391825.
So I did a little Google'n to see where this phone was available...and of course it's not available to us telecommunication-ally challenged US folks.
So here's the company that sells them; but of course they're in Dubai:
http://www.iteqonline.com/en_index.asp
After some more research I found the new updated ROM for this phone, and so I proceeded to unpack it so I could find the applications I wanted.
So--my challenge to you is who can provide for us the following applications from this ROM?
1. Answering Machine (Figure 7)
2. Background Effects (Figure 11)
3. Phone Recording (Figure 12) - granted I don't think this will work on the phone I want to try it on
4. Java Applet (Figure 27)
5. Voice Recorder (Figure 30)
6. Filter SIM and Send DTMF (Figure 20)
7. Magnifier (Figure 24 and 25)
All items should be in their own respective cab files for easy install for anyone who wishes to use it.
Thanks and Good Luck!
You can download the dumped rom from here
You'll need 7-Zip to unzip the archive. 7-Zip is available at http://www.7-zip.org/

On the Answering Machine....
First the Wizard has a hardware limitation that prevents call recording unless you are using speakerphone. I would assume this would eliminate the Answering Machine ability.
Second, my assumption would be that it would be in the PhoneDialer App. So you would need to install their Phone.dll and the control panel applet for the settings.
Third, a registry dump would be useful to see any hooks to the AnswerMachine.dll.

Any thoughts on where to get the registry dumps?
I'll do some more Google'n
I would love to see someone rip out the answering machine. I think a lot of people woudl find this very useful...
I just took the java app (exe) out of the dump and dropped it in my storage card on my mda. it seems to start up fine. i dont have any jar files handy to try out. It shows an option to install them from either the storage card or "my documents". Im no tech wiz but it seems like someone who knows what they are doing could get all of these features, or maybe some of them from this to work on a wizard.

Due to the hardware design of the Wizard, WM5 has no access to the incoming audio stream. bluetooth routing is also done independent of the OS as I understand it. There simply is no way to 1) send audio out to the GSM Phone conntection or 2) record to other person.
The idea of an answering machine on your Wizard is a pipedream.
Previous post deleted.
Nice challenge, I'm interested in the answering machine.
I would be interested in the Cyberon Voice Commander which appears to add a lot of features to the relatively inferior voice speed dial we have. Also the Easy-Touch Menu would be nice, it adds the option of phone profiles and a few other handy items on one menu. It looks like it's a non resident program also so it would be handy for our performance challenged phones.
I don't have any experience with ROMS, otherwise I would attempt this myself. Is this possible?

Incase you missed my previous comments about the answering machine:
Due to the hardware design of the Wizard, WM5 has no access to the incoming audio stream. bluetooth routing is also done independent of the OS as I understand it. There simply is no way to 1) send audio out to the GSM Phone conntection or 2) record to other person.
The idea of an answering machine on your Wizard is a pipedream.

Wow I am glad I didn't know this when I downloaded and installed PMRecorder. Although the calls are quiet (unless using speakerphone) they can still be heard. But I assure you they work. If we could get the answering machine to turn on the speakerphone automatically, we could even screen calls!
Maybe the answering machine is a new upgrade to Voice commander!

Is there way to add a sound to the opening of the keyboard?

Well the topic says it all.
I want to add a sound to the opening and/or closing of the keyboard.
Is this possible?
Thanks
Any hacks for this? I suppose that the opening of the keyboard calls some kind of an event (since sliding it open changes the screen orientation) So can this same event call be used to assign a sound as well?
I also want to kno this and was going to ask right before I came 2 see this link...so please answer!
There are some really talented people here. I would have thought someone would have done this by now. But I assume, from lack of info, that this hasn't been considered before?
Would someone, who has the skill set to do this, consider looking into it and seeing if it is possible?
Thanks a million!!
Have a good one
Try this thread.....
Cheers!
That thread refers to the Herald, or Tmobile Wing. I found this thread and thats all I've been able to find for the Wizard or Tmobile MDA.
There may be a registry key that needs to be modified/added after installing the HTC Sliding Sounds application to make it 'active' for the Wizard.
Any ideas?
Im trying to figure it out too.. I dunno how to get it to initiate...
Need someone with the Herald (T-Mobile Wing) to help
Under HKEY\LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\HTC\SlidingSound there are 2 keys 'ActiveSlidingSound' and 'SlidingSoundEffect', these are for setting which sound of the 3 available to use, I'm assuming.
Anyone out there know someone with a Herald or T-Mobile Wing that is willing to share what they have in this folder in their registry?? Maybe there's and EnableSound key or something to that effect that us Wizard users can add and we'll have a happy day!

I just checked mine and under SlidingSound, there are 3 folders... 0, 1, and 2. Each folder has 3 keys... Default, in, and out. "Default" is the name for the sounds (ex: Wind Chimes, Piano, and Xylophone), "in" is the location of the file used for when the keyboard slides in (ex: Slider0_in.wav), and the same applies to "out" for when the keyboard slides out (ex: Slider0_out.wav).
Also inside the SlidingSound folder are 2 more keys... ActiveSlidingSound and SlidingSoundEffect. ActiveSlidingSound refers to which sliding sound you want to use... so in this case it would be one of the 3 folders mentioned above (0,1, or 2). SlidingSoundEffect refers to whether or not you want the sliding sound on. (0 = off, 1 = on).
Hope this helps!
I installed the software that was made by JUVS....it does not work on my MDA.
Any other ideas? I had tried searching before I made this thread initially, and i had not seen the 2 that are discussed here. I apologize for having made a 3rd one.
Back on topic, I certainly hope this can be made to work. Any other ideas?
Thanks for all the info so far.
Later
this is a really cool idea, i would also like to know how to do it...

Thanks so much! This does help!
Unfortunately, I have the same keys on my MDA after installing the application for the SlidingSounds and it doesn't make sounds when I open the keyboard physically. I'm suspecting that the MDA is missing something, possibly a hardware switch (don't think so, though, cause it has to detect when the keyboard opens for landscape mode).
My guess is that this will not work on the MDA
Umfortunately I'm not a programmer, but I was thinking that the easiest way to get somethig like this to work would be to link the sound to play with the screen rotation instead of trying to get it to work when the keyboard is slid out which obviously isn't working anyway. It would play the sound if you rotated your screen manually, but I can't see why that would be a big deal. Maybe someone with a little programming knowledge could get this to work though.
I wanna keep this thread alive. SlidingSounds is something i wanna see work for wizards. It'll be cool if someone could craft a workaround or a new prog altogether.
Opening the keyboard is an event, shouldn't be hard to craft something to have it make a sound.
Any updates on this? I downloaded the app and it hasn't done anything, especially when messing with the registry. Thanks.
I've been working on tis as well but it seems that there is no way to adjust the registry to get it to work. I believe a app is gonna have to get the wizard to have this feature.
This would be so cool.. Alot of people have 'flip' style phones, and when they open them, they have some funny sounds. Would be great to have on the Wizard!
Anybody figured this out yet? I'm really sure it can be done.
im all about hacks for the wizard, but...
im assuming that you saw a wing and are trying to duplicate it...
WHY would you want it to do this?!?!?!?!!?!?!?!
same question for the menu pop sound?
those are the most annoying things i've seen on phone... well except for the default startup and shutdown sounds on all retail phones... when you turn off your phone, isnt because you're somewhere that you should be sure it wont be ringing/vibrating?
but on the other hand i still can't understand why people like to have the keys beep on their regular cell phones when they are txting...
sorry for the rant... i just don't get it

Maybe because we love the bells and whistles a gadget can make, it's all about your custom love that you want to have, not just everyone's universal preference. Some of us love to customize our phones to suit our personality, not just YOURS. Maybe these sounds grab attention of chicks, maybe this wallpaper makes us look cool in the sight of geeks. It's all personal prereference.
That's why I want keyboard Sliding Sounds to work. It's just one more thing that will grab the attention of people to see that, yes, I don't need a new phone every six months or so. I can make a new one using an old one by utilizing hacks.

So the dual is a good choice?

I've been reading thru the posts on the touch dual and see a pretty overwhelming response in the positive range regarding the device. It's been out for a bit so it is getting a track record. I've decided to order the 20 key qwerty. Was getting a little buyers remorse and was wondering if there were any consistant ongoing issues that perhaps I missed. I would appreciate all comments. Thanks. Hope I'm not making a mistake. I currently have the cruise so I'm used to the touch flo. I think I'm going to like the qwerty slider.
hi there cbreze,
After speaking to a few members on here, who have been extremely helpful, i think the phone sounds really good. Read Here:-
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=379178
But after reading about a few issues, i'm beginning to get paranoid if i made the right choice. On this thread, there is a mention of people having problems locking and unlocking the phone when answering calls:-
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=353569
Personally, all i want is a phone which when in closed position is locked and i shouldn't be able to use the Touchscreen or any other button, but when i slide it open, that should be the time when i should be able to answer calls or press buttons to dial out.
Also there is the mention of constantly doing soft resets etc. I hope this isn't a regular issue

thanks ducamie for the link and also for PM'ing me earlier. I'm waiting for delivery today and hope that the phone arrives quickly.
For those who are total noobs, like myself to WM6, what is the best way of learning to install these apps? FYI, i am very computer literate, but dread to mess with mobile phones. I assume WM6 is like Windows XP in file structures, extensions and to install is also a similar method?
if you understand about computers, ppc should be a walk in the park for you!!
it's pretty simple to install anything:
download the .cab file (.cab is for your ppc as .exe is for your pc)
copy the .cab file to your ppc
open the .cab file with your ppc
it installs automatically (you just need to choose the location)
done!
just like a normal computer
I got mine for about 2 weeks now. Overall device is good, only disappointment for me is that XT9 cannot be disabled, it is default input method and you have to manually change all the time. Also when you want to use hardware keyboard for typing sms, it only types numbers When i was ordering this device, i was planning to use hardware keypad for typing stuff, but it is just not usable.
I installed Opera Mobile, similarly, if you want to type URL in address bar using hardware keypad, only numbers can be typed. Not sure if there is a fix somewhere on this forum, i could not find one so far.
creaking
first of all, i love my device!
but quite a long time the cap @ the backside of the device is creaking when i use the touchscreen or the keypad. does anyone have this problem too? what can i do against that? put'em into the freezer
Yep, they all do that (the creaking, that is!). Mine does it as well. It's because there are no strengthening bars in the battery cover, meaning that it flexes when pressed. Nothing to worry about. I actually dropped mine yesterday (I was on a call) and it didn't even drop the connection. The battery cover flew off but, otherwise, the phone was fine. No marks at all. I do have a screen protector on as well, which ultimately saved me a massive headache!
Would a simple bus. card on top of the battery or a section of tape wrapped around the battery help any. I've never had a device yet I couldn`t fix a batt. door creak by using some simple mod. I hate that creaking noise thing!

Well thats very interesting, thanks for that helpful explanation. Without mentioning too much detail (shhh ) Can i get tomtom to fit on a 1gb microsd card supplied by orange or will i need to buy another card? Also how hard is it to install tomtom on the ppc? Do i simply run a .cab file?
