Widcom stack bonus! Wireless Networking(OT- not GPS related)

Hi all,
I've been following the Widcom port across to the XDA-II, not because I want to attach a GPS, but because of the much expanded feature set.
I installed the BluetoothGPS.zip file, then activated all the new services offered by the phone.
I have a Belkin F8T001 USB Adapter in my broadband PC. I want to use BT to surf the net from the XDA without paying O2. Trouble is, my Belkin doesn't provide an Activesync Profile, so it can't be done. Until now, that is.
Belkin USB adapters offer a 'Network Access' service. The Widcom stack now allows the XDA to wireless network with my PC, map drives with Resco Explorer, surf the net without the bother of Activesync, oh, and Activesync over BT Wireless LAN if you like. The PC acts very much like a WiFi access point.
Another excellent bonus is the ability to browse the PDA with the BT 'File Transfer' Service. This is easier than browsing through Activesync, as you can open picture files directly without having to transfer them to the PC first.

Thanks for the post on Net access - It's not as easy as it looks (having spent AGES getting iPAQs working with Bluetooth Dongles (BTW: You DO need 1.3.2.7 of the Widcomm Stack on XP to make PAN connections work!!!
My question is:
Has anyone managed to work out how to get PAN or LAP Network Bluetooth access going on an XDA II??
I can easily get a PAN network access connection going on an iPAQ 5550 (with the identical Widcomm stack version) - On the XDA II with the Widcomm stack installed, it defaults to a LAP profile... (Using BT Null Modem). I can't get this method working with internet access.
If I connect XP to the iMate, then the PAN driver is used on the PDA - BUT I can't get any traffic through (this is the same on the iPaq and the iMate).
Anyone got any clues / hints for me, please?!?! (ROM versions etc are latest).

Hi,
I'd same the problem, but since I enabled service Personal Network Sever, then at PC side connect to Xda II, it's working, I can ping from / to Xda II.
(enable service by start > setting > bluetooth > from File Transfer to Personal Network Server, I checked them all)
But it's problem to connect via Xda II to PC, then I restarted PC and PPC and make new shortcut of PC Network Access.
Now it's working I can use Resco file explorer to map driver of PC share folder and get access to file. But it's seem unstable because it's hang sometime.
ps: Thank so much to the great person who made bluetoothgps.zip.

I'd very much like to get hold of this file as well, same problem - user/pass doesn't work anymore.

That's a shame, it used to be on ftp://hydrosphere:[email protected]/ but it's gone now. I've obviously got it, but I'm damned if I'm hosting it as it's 'unlicenced software'.

As acurtis007 pointed out, it's not easy to do this even on the correct PDA. If you do get hold of the Widcom stack, you need to understand networking and a little voodoo to surf the net.
One advantage is that the BT Dongle in your PC becomes like an access point. You no longer have to set up an Activesync Partnership, so a PC can be logged in as anybody, and any PDA(s) can surf.
Here's the way to get Surfing over BT using proper IP NAT:
Your XP PC
Your installed BT Dongle should offer a Local Service called 'Network Access'. This should be started automatically, and creates a 'Bluetooth LAN Access Server' interface in your Network Connections. This is the important bit: Activate 'Internet Connection Sharing' on your LAN Card. Select the Bluetooth LAN Adapter as the Interface you want to share with. If you don't have a LAN card, then share whatever interface connects to the Internet.
If your LAN Card already has an ip address that starts with 192.168.0. then you're out of luck. You'll have to change the entire setup of your LAN to another Subnet. I chose 192.168.50.x, which is fine.
If you have correctly activated ICS, your BT LAN Interface will have the IP address 192.168.0.1, and your Internet device will have a hand under it's Icon.
You're XP PC is now ready to accept Bluetooth surfers - both of the Internet and your LAN.
The XDA-II
Bung in the Widcom Stack
Run the Lovely new Bluetooth Connection Wizard and Explore. You'll see a PC icon appear, tap it. You should be offered a range of services, depending on what make of BT Dongle you have. Select 'Network Access'. A Shortcut appears. Hold the stylus down on the Icon, and select Connect from the pop-up. You will have to do the PIN thing as you connect the 2 devices. The XDA's Bluetooth Null Modem then connects to the PC, and hello broadband.
The stack is very stable. I've been using it for 2 weeks now every day for both surfing and file transfers.
It's not perfect - beware
This is a hack, and therefore does not operate entirely correctly:
You will ALWAYS get an error message when first initialising the new stack. I'm used to it: Start Bluetooth - it fails; Start Bluetooth again - it runs. This happens every time, and I just live with it. Once it's up, I can surf till the battery dies.
You will need to reset your XDA-II's Connection Settings (Advanced - Select Networks) back to 'My ISP' where it says 'Programs that....Internet..'
Others on this forum have reported that the XDA's sound gets disabled when you uninstall the Widcom cab file. I haven't had cause to do this as I'm 100% keeping it. This is the advice I've seen posted:
"Uninstalling Widcom Stack
If you have the Widcom stack go to the WIDCOM BT-manager Audio gateway tab and Disable this before uninstalling. Sound should then remain actve."
So there you go - it works a treat.

If you want a bit of fun, try this:
Get yer Widcom network access up 'n' running
Put a TV Tuner Card into the PC with the BT Dongle attached, and hook up your Sky Box to the TV Card.
Download the free 'Microsoft Media Encoder'
Using Media Encoder, Run a Live Broadcast, and select 'Pocket PC Widescreen' as the target audience. Your Sky Box output (or whatever) is now being converted into a TCP/IP Stream at the sort of data rate your XDA can handle.
To watch Sky on your XDA all round the house, run Media Player on your XDA and enter the url http://192.168.0.1:80 (assuming you're connected via BT). You can also do this with a Webcam, and remotely monitor it full screen on your PDA.

Whilst i am at it. let me throw this in the works.
The XDAII connects via BT to a PC on the network. I can browse the network from the PC. But i can only browse the files on the PC that i am directly connected to via BT from the XDA as well as access the internet. Is this normal?
IP address is 192.168.0.1 on BT adapter. The LAN connection of the PC is 192.168.11.5 ( auto ip).
all other PCs on the network are in the 192.168.11.x range.
Any suggestions?

I found out that the speed networking over BT is slower than expected. Any others having problems for repaly MP3s on their XDA. I think the max speed over BT is 1MBit. Whith all protocol things you schould get min 500kBit. But I have problems playing MP3s with mor than 192kBit, The XDE "feels" very slow. - any ideas?

Oorbz: To conect to your home LAN you need to set up a Networking bridge (Because your network is devided in 2 segments). Using windows xp its included. Mark both network adapter and choose "Network bridge". After that you only configure the bridge and both networks are conected under one subnet mask. Sometimes BT-Adapters are not fully compatible with the network bridge. Then you need to do 2 little steps:
On the console type in:

You mentioned the Belkin BT adaptor. That is about 30 odd pounds. Are all BT adaptors the same? i.e. do they just implement some version of the protocol? Seems the Belkin one implements v1.1.

Bluetooth and Activesync

Hi All, great forum this found out loads of info.
I have a real problem.
My connector on the Handset has broke so not able to sync with laptop.
Brought bluetooth dongle se up as instructions on the forum site.
But it does not work.
When i try to sync with activesync on PDA it comes up with.
Cannot start communications with the desktop computer. The communitations port is not available,Another program may be using the port or it may not be valid.
Any ideas please.

in activesync on the PC have you selected the correct serial port that your bluetooth is acting as

Using qtek 2020 ROM 1.72WEW ,Active Sync 3.8,Win2000SP3.
I entered at the BluetoothStick and at the ActiveSync Screen the port COM5.

I spent hours and hours trying to sep up Activesync and I found these and sorted it:
Bluetooth Drivers:
First I removed the old Bluetooth drivers as they are not needed.

I found this a little tricky, but I did it like this (using SP2 BT drivers on XP):
1.Start off with the phone and computer unpaired
2.Open the bluetooth menu (double click on the bluetooth icon in the system tray).
3.Select the comm ports tab and click to add a new INCOMING port. - This port got assigned to something stupid like comm 36.
4.Open device manager, and select the comm port that has just been made.
5. Go to properties->port settings->advanced and change it to a lower end port you know isn't in use. I selected 3.
6. Reboot the computer (not sure if this was really needed)
7. On the phone go to start->settings->system-bluetooth settings and make sure the in and outgoing ports are selected (again not sure if thats essential, but I have it on and it works for me). Then press start.
8. Bond with your computer. There isnt anything that tells you if this has worked or not (which is very frustrating), so you just gotta click ok and test it.
9. In activesync go into the connections bit and tell it to list on the comm that you set in step 3. To get to this bit you have to have synced your phone through usb or something first.
10. on the phone go to activesync->tools->connect via bluetooth (remember to turn bluetooth on first). If everything has gone to plan then it should connect fine.
I did this a few times until suddenly it worked. I'm not sure what I did the time that it did work, but it was something, so I would suggest trying slightly different things each time, but I'm pretty sure it was that way.
The whole process of setting up activesync over bluetooth is really tedious imo, and could be greatly improved in many many ways.

when i try to bond with my computer...why is it asking for a PIN CODE? im trying to connect my imate to the computer so i can sync thru bluetooth and possibly use the internet when i'm around the house. Can someone please help me?
i tried the search engine, but its no help for me.

of course it will ask for a pincode in both directions.. meaning your phone and PC.. but this for the first time connection only... so what you want to do is to set each other as an authorized counterpart of the other so that you will not have any confirmations again

is it possible for me to use the internet from my computer on my PDA thru BT? for example, i want to use AIM *AOL* instant message, but im not sure if there is an internet connection on my PDA thru bluetooth. If you go into activesync and under options-->rules at the bottom there is the option to share your net connection with the synced device (called pass-through). My XDA II pops up a message when its making a gprs connection.

activesync via bluetooth

Hi all,
I have a toshiba portege r200 and I'm simply not able to set up ActiveSync to work through bluetooth. The darn computer only sees my phone as a modem.
I have no clue how to do this.
I really cant' see why this has to be so hard. Both units are running stupid microsoft software. Whey the can't microsoft think that people migh want to connect their ppc's to their laptops via bt and just make it work easily?
Please, someone help.

I agree 100% that this should be easier. But I think ActiveSync is actually a service that the laptop offers, not the phone. So on the phone, go to your BT manager, select your laptop, and then select services. ActiveSync should be one of the choices. After that, you should be able to connect to ActiveSync via BT, but I think you need to initiate the connection from your phone.

Activesync via Bluetooth
1. Install Active sync
2. Connect phone to USB cable and computer and let active Sync run once.
3. Disconnect USB cable.
4. On your Computers Bluetooth software (add a com port) before you detect the phone (very important).
5. On Active Sync on Computer click "connection Settings" and make sure it is using your com port from step 4.
6. Turn on discovery on your computer.
7. On your Phone go to Bluetooth / devices / New and select your computer enter pin on phone and PC.
8. Go to Active Sync on your phone and click "Connect via Bluetooth."

i tried everything you guys suggested and it's still not working. my comp only offers a serial connection. is that ok? it has this toshiba bluetooth software on it not the original windows kind.
when i choose connect via bluetooth on my ppc's activesync it sais there's no computer that supports bt.

I have Toshiba Bluetooth control software as well. I am certain it's the incorrect or incomplete BT COM port setting on your PC. A few findings (on my notebook) to share, hope this helps.
1. I have a "Bluetooth Local COM" applet on Control Panel
2. By opening "Bluetooth Local COM" applet I have a list of PORTS
3. The CORRECT port I HAVE TO use IS
"COM7 Toshiba BT Port (COM7) LocalCOM-Server[SerialPort(TOSHIBA LOcalCOM)]
NOT
"COM6 Toshiba BT Port (COM6) LocalCOM-Client"
4. If you don't find the Server COM port, do "create a Bluetooth virtual COM port for a Server"
5. Of course enable by checking the "Connection Settings" "allows connections to one of the following COM#" (7 in my case)
After this, try the steps I suggested. Initiate BT Activesyn from your PDA phone.

I just wanted to bump this to say thanks for posting the bit about using the LocalCOM-Server[SerialPort(TOSHIBA LOcalCOM)] port instead of the client port. Trying to get AS working using the Toshiba stack was driving me around the bend!

this worked on my cingular 8125 as well, zsizsi i think you may have to delete all partnerships that were previously created with handheld on your pc and handheld. if that dosent work then in bluetooth settings go to options and under general tab check box "PAN networking service" that is just something i did while creating partnership not sure if it helps

The only thing that worked for me after 4 days of messing with it was to do a cold boot.
The first thing I did after the boot was to follow the instructions. Voila! ActiveSync magically appeared.

I have exactly the same problem with my qtek9100 and my IBM T43 Laptop.
I tried many times but....still not working!
As zsizsi if I try to make a relationship via PDA, it asks me the pairing key, and I'm blocked.
If I go through PC, I can do pairing, in the services I flag activesync, I configure the same com port that I have on AS (com 8) and when I0'm in the bluetooth wizard on the PDA, related to the PC I can only see 3 services:
hands free
remote connection
serial port
no activesync service to flag.
If I try then with the PDA Menu>BT connection it aswer that there is no relationship with PC supporting AS!!!!What the hell!
The only thing I see is that in my BT config in the local server the BT wizard creates a serial port named My activesync......
I have tried also your suggestion but.....

thank you soo much for that info...enabling the "PAN networking service" finally allowed me to connect with my toshiba qosmio laptop

If the devices are paired... You have to select a service for the pda BT connection
Only when you manage to select the servive Activesync (a comport has to be valid assingd) then a connectin can be astablished.
In active sync you must assign a com port.
See the manual in activesync BT

Yes, I can guess it.
The rpoblem is that the devices are paired, the activesync service is flagged in the PC (while I do the automatic pairing devices withn a wizard).
But I can't still see the service in my PDA.
I can only find:
Hands free
Serial port
remote connection
No activesync service on the PDA relation wizard...
Any other suggestion?

Another issue.
When I look in my BT services, I can't find an activesync service, but only an icon (com plug) called My activesync.
Look at the properties of this icon I can only flag automatic/manual and Secure/unsecure connection, and there is the window manu to select the com port (that is the same selected in Activesync settings).
Is that correct, or I should find a specific activesync icon (like PIM syncronizing ....)

FOLLOW THIS STEP BY STEP.... I HAVE DONE IT 3 TIMES FOR MYSELF AND FRIENDS ON DIFFERENT LAPTOPS AND IT WORKED FIRST TIME - EVERYTIME!!!
PS. Delete all existing pairings, relationships, COM ports etc, START FRESH!

But I have to say that those people that work on our mobile network provider company are uncapale, because they said that this is impossible to connect.

Adding Bluetooth Ports

Hi all.
I have a T-Mobile MDA Compact, which I flashed with a big storage ROM I got from the FTP site (1.13.00 WWE). My device works fine, other than one thing.
I cannot establish an ActiveSync connection using Bluetooth. When I try to set up the connection on my device, when it comes to choosing which port I will use for the connection, there are none to choose from, and I am unable to complete the operation.
I can connect to other devices for file transfer Ok, and I don;t have any problems using a Bluetooth headset.
Does anyone know if there is an entry I can add to the registry to add a port manually, or if there is another way I can add a port?

First of all pair your PC.
Then go to settings-tab system-Bluetooth settings and make sure you open your autbound COM port by clicking the checkox.
Press the button "start"

Bruins3 - done what you said, but no joy. It tells me to then pair with my PC, even though it already is. Strangely, I can pair with my Magician from my PC, but not vice versa.
Once the two are paired, when I go to the COM ports tab in Bluetooth settings, I simply cannot add a port of any kind - no ports are listed in the drop-down box for me to select.

Forget it, Dont sync your magician using Bluetooth.
Its a big waste of time.
Ive spent the last hour trying to get this to work, and it just annoying me.
I have made my Magician sync with my computer over bluetooth before, Using 'Bluesoleil'. It's some sort of stack/ program, and for some reason my Bluesoleil doesent work anymore.
But someone made a thread about it, very detailed, and i cant find it anymore. Try experiment, and id be glad to know if you can get it to work properly.

No, that's what WiFi is for.

Yeah, i know, but at home i've got a bluetooth acces point which i use to connect 2 laptops to lan. So i also wanted to do this with the prophet.
Now i have to use a computer with active sync to connect to the internet, but i cant acces lan that way.

Wifi aside......it would be handy if we could use bluetooth to connect to the lan setup even if just to transfer files. Theres a program for palm that does a similar idea. But I guess really it IS down to having to use wifi for now.
Bluetooth security has always worried me anyway.

bluezard
I can transfer files with bluezard on wm5 using filetransfer profile
other options for lan and other profiles are also there but i have no way of testing them
