Has anyone found the trick to enabling the Network Selection tab on a Cingular 8525 ROM 1.34?
TIA,
Richard

Thanks eagle1, I wasn't specific enough - I'm looking for something that will show me that e.g. Cingular and T-mobile Networks are present and ask which I want to register on. The UMTS/GSM Band Selection Tab is working great now that I made the registry change noted, but on my Networks tab I only see "Current network: Cingular" listed and a "Find Network" button which only re-registers me on Cingular. I thought other carrier ROMs allowed seeing/selecting from a list of available networks....

i've tried the hack already, it'll show u the 2 cingular selections after you click on "find network" but it will not let u register to the 2nd selection, only the 1st one! so my question is, can someone figure how to hack that problem?

Which hack? The one Eagle1 linked to is the \HKLM\Software\OEM\PhoneSetting\ShowUMTSBandPage setting, right? I have that on my production 8525 running 1.34 and it changes nothing for me on the Network tab, it gives me a new tab Band Selection.
What registry change are you talking about? Sounds like you've gotten it to show the networks, but still have the SIM naming override going on... in theory that's the ONSDisplayRule setting, but I've not been successful with that one either. (My ONSDisplayRule is set to "4" which value I've not found documented anywhere!)

I did the same hack for the 8125 on the 8525, and i noticed that there was a line missing in the registry of the 8525, but was there in the 8125, so i guess cingular remove this line to keep users from registering with the 2nd selection. do a search on here for "enable manual network selection 8125" and select HTC 8125...... next select the 2nd page, and look there!

Are you talking about
HKLM\Security\Phone\ManualDisable=0
and
HKLM\Security\Phone\PreferredDisable=0
???? (No offense, but why not just say so??)
Setting ManualDisable to 0 gives me the desired Network Selection stuff but won't let me register on EITHER Cingular or T-mobile. I'd expect it not to work on T-mo, but am surprised about the Cingular side....
Folks in the thread you referenced: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=266794 say these settings won't stick across a soft boot...that'd be inconvenient to say the least. Yep, I just confirmed that the setting is reset on soft boot....
It would seem like there should be some way to stop WM5 from updating its settings based on the SIM card, but maybe not. At least this hack will let me temporarily see what networks are around when I'm travelling outside Cingular's coverage area.

sorry i didnt know the hack right off, so i directed you. but actually i dont know if many people knew this but when i did the hack with the 8125, after soft rebooting the phone, the enable manual network selection would be removed but i would still be conncted to the t mobile tower!!! i confirmed this buy doing a sound test believe it or not. whenever im on cingy,s tower i can hear interference whenever im close to an active speaker or if im on my lan line, but on tmobile tower it doesnt generate that interence at all and that how i confirmed that i was still on that tower even after i did a soft reboot! the only way it would switch me back to the cingy tower is when i pushed find network! i guess some folks caught onto that so this time they wont let us register on the tower at all with the 8525's. but it would be nice if someone can find out how to enable this feature again!
any news Manual phone network selection
Guys - it is problem with Cingular card not phone.
On normal (non Cingular) branded phone Cingular cards disables manual network sellection and preferred network list.
Checked on TyTN and Motorola SVLR. Any other card has this access.
This is intentional from Cingular and it is embedded on their SIMcard.

Yes, and on the SLVR and other Motos, one can configure the phone to IGNORE that SIM directive - many of us would like to find this feature on the Hermes as well....

Agreed with my ATT Blue SIM (old) I can manually select networks with no issue, pop in my daughters Cingular SIM (same phone) and I lose the feature until I swap back. One of the many reasons I won't give up my old SIM
"Problem with Cingular Simcard but not phones?" I dun really think so.
I have this 3G sim, on Nokia N70, I could manually select between Cingular and ATT signals. However, when it is on my 8525, it just simply cant...
How would this support your conclusion here?
Anyone come up with any solution here? I need ATT signal in my apartment, but not that crappy, call dropping, auto-selected Cingular signal.
Please advise.

Simple. It's a well known fact that the SIM card can (and Cingular ones do) supply a directive to the phone to prohibit network selection. Some phones ignore this or can be told to ignore this. Apparently your N70 ignores it. Again, it's a well known fact that the 8525 does NOT ignore this directive. Some folks have been able to get Cingular to do an OTA to their SIM card to enable network identification, but I've never heard of anyone getting the network selection turned on....
Richard
its definitely not dependent on the sim card, because once again, I pulled out the 3g sim and placed it into an 8125 and I was able to select the second tower and register on it, so its something with the 8525's that's blocking this!

Then if like what you said, it doesnt matter if the SIM blocks the network selection or not, if the phone can ignore the prohibition on network selection, then it should be all right to selection other networks, right?
If it depends on the phone also, shouldnt it be a way to tweak the setting or OS or watever to make this thing working? (I bet it is not a hardware restriction, isn't it?)

Well sure, *IF* you can figure out how to tell the phone to ignore it. Obviously the carrier does NOT want you to do this, or they would have provisioned the SIM to allow selection. So the definition of "all right" varies

Preferred Networks.
Just curious for those in the USA. When you select the Preferred Networks option are you getting networks in the list from Europe? I'm wondering if this is what's causing my phone to appear as "roaming". The triangle keeps showing up and I don't understand why. Is it because my sim card is for T-Mobile (US) even though it's an unlocked and unbranded software of Cingular's 8525?

I'm using Cingular 8525 (unlocked) in Canada with Fido sim, where can i change the GPRS setting on the phone? i don't see any place that can change it? thanks in advance!
look what I found when I googled Fido "GPRS Settings"
http://www.dslreports.com/faq/7418
In any case, Ross Barkman's page is the best for finding your telco settings.
http://www.taniwha.org.uk/gprs.html
To change your settings you have 3 options (I've included details instructions so follow them carefully):
Option 1.
1. Go the box the phone came in
2. Pull out the little book that says user manual
3. Open the book up
4. Read it.
Option 2.
1. Scroll to the top of this page
2. Click on XDA-Wiki
3. Go the Hermes Section
4. Read it.
5. Read it again, so you understand everything not just the GPRS problem.
Option 3 (and I'm gonna hear about this from pof).
1. Click Start
2. Click Settings
3. Click Con... Argh, I can't sorry man... you're gonna have to pick 1 or 2.
Forgive me pof, I started feeling sorry for the newbie. I promise I won't do it again!
thanks! i already know what the setting is, but i'm just wondering that will Cingular allow me to change the GPRS settings?
If the phone is unlocked, there is nothing stopping you from changing anything on the phone. For all purposes Cingular is just a name written on your phone, Cingular the company has nothing to do with you anymore unless you have a cingular SIM in your phone.
Thanks for replied, the problme is, the Cingular stock rom doesn't have any icon that let me to change the GPRS setting! there should be a "Network Wizard" on Setting-->Connection , but there is non! when i click on GPRS setting, it only allowing me choose either "PAP authentication" or "CHAP authentication" . i have been playing the GPRS setting for a long time, but didn't get anyting, so should i flash to other rom? thanks in advance!

Thank you Bny! I do know how to make it and also set the proper strings in my case APN would be internet.movistar.mx and the user name & paswrord is movistar. That´s not really the problem, in fact I do know that I have a connection to my network, the problem is that something happen 8525 than doesn´t allow me to route my connections thru other routes but the one that Cingular has a preset. I really don´t know if is it the Ext ROM, my SIM card (not a 3G card) or the network itself since is not a 3G network !!!?
have any of you guys considered doing a hard reset and then soft reset before the 3 second customization? that way none of the cingular stuff gets installed?!?

I suppose there could be a number of reasons for this. But here is a consideration from my experience albeit on a different network. I entered all the details for my O2 connection as published on several different internet sites. Initially I could not get beyond "connecting" but found a minor error in what I had entered. Now I got as far as "Opening" but never actually open a site. I gave up but happened across a website that suggested that if you get that far i.e. "to opening" then perhaps the only fault would be the port number in proxy settings for HTTP. I checked and it was correctly set to "80". I did searches on the internet and found one that suggested port "8080" and it worked straight away. I only suggest that you check the port number and whether there are alternatives if you are getting as far as "opening".

Note two "connections" and if you do you get a page titled connections and Two headings 1. My ISP and 2. My Work Network

Thanks Mike and shogunmark! I´ll try the trick to avoid the customisation from Cingular; as far the port setting that´s a good point, however my screen for connection settings only shows 2 tabs: 1)Tasks and 2) Advanced, the 3rd tab (Proxy) that is present in my 8125 is missing in my 8525. Any ideas to make it appear or change the port? Thanks again you guys!

New Hero. Originally sold by Orange UK. Unlocked and imported to Ireland.
New sim from 3 Ireland.
Sim goes into Hero, but Hero does not connect to network. Occassionally phone makes brief connection to 2G roaming partner (Vodafone), but never 3G connection to 3 network.
Manually search for networks and select 3 (or any network for that matter) and phone says "Your SIM card does not allow a connection to this network".
"Mobile Network - Connect to internet" option in settings seems disabled (greyed out, can't be changed).
Have tried HTC, Orange, T-Mobile and MoDaCo ROMs.
Can anyone please suggest a fix. This is surely a phone setting thing? It can't be that 3 USIMs just don't work in the phone can it? I mean I haven't got the APN configured properly, but I should still be getting basic phone services no?
Did you get this fixed? I am having the same problem trying to use Three sim in England on a Orange Hero. It accepts the network unlock code but then stays on the 'unlocking sim' screen and I left it for ages.
No. Gave up and am staying with my old provider (3 didn't seem too interested in holding onto me as a new customer).
I've been posting this query in a few places. In one thread a guy from England said his 3 Sim used to work but then suddenly began exhibiting the behaviour I have described. I think he said a factory reset fixed it. Anyway, some have supposed that this could be a bug in Android/Hero that makes it incompatible with 3. I personally suspect its more about 3.
Thanks anyway. There must be a way round it, I'll find it.
Be sure to post if you do.

This is MAJOR weird. Chances are, the new USIM is not compatible. I've got mine for about 2 years, first in a W910i, now in Hero (sim-free, UK). Everything worked first time in the Hero, just needed APN settings for MMS and data. Surprisingly, MMS won't send or download while on WiFi. Mine's currently running on the leaked 2.73.405.5 ROM (not MoDaCo).
Maybe try someone else' sim, from 3 or other network and see if that works.

Well I've never actually unlocked a phone myself so I don't know, but of its hanging then I would guess its not unlocking properly so its not going to work.
Maybe contact the person you bought the code from and ask for help or another code. Otherwise I wonder if reflashing the ROM would help?
Hero on 3 Ireland
I am using a 3 Ireland "3pay" prepaid SIM with my white Hero (completely unlocked, imported from UK). Works fine! I got the "mobile broadband" prepaid package about a year ago and had to buy a usb modem (sitting on my desk ever since) with the sim card.
You need to enter the 3ireland.ie APN, but no other magic incantations
Occasionally, I get the "Roaming" indicator in the notification bar on the Hero (weak signal might cause this). Then, clearly, no internet. Its not roaming with another provider either. I strongly suspect that this is a 3 bug. Reconnecting to the 3 network fixes it.
PS: I'm in Dublin and usually get a HSPA connection ("H" icon)
PPS: You do not need to top up your 3 sim in order to connect to http://my3.three.ie (indeed, on that web page you can enter your prepaid voucher #).

Hmm, you guys seem to have some strange issues with those 3 USIMs. Maybe checking serial numbers or chip revision would shed some light into this. My USIM is not only working fine, but also happily roaming (GSM + data!) when I tell it to do so. Heck, I've spent two weeks in Italy on "3 Italy" with this USIM and it worked fine.
Ok since posting on here yesterday I have rooted my phone and put on modacos latest rom and its still not working, I have tried two seperate three sims and a vodafone sim. Given that the vodafone sim is also not working Im thinking it's a problem with the unlock code.
I'll contact them and see what they say.

Maybe I was not clear enough: Every couple of days, I get the roaming indicator while being in Ireland. Clearly, you can't roam to another Irish network. While I haven't tried it yet, I'm pretty sure that roaming outside of Ireland will work (worked before I got the Hero).

It looks like we have the same problem.
As I promised above, it is the detailed description.
First case:
Turn on the phone with orange SIM card - everything works fine.
Turn on the phone with any other SIM card (I actually tried 3 other SIM card from 3 different providers). It asks unlock code. Enter unlock code I bought (actually any code containing 8 digits) it says "Network unlock successful." But after that it allow only emergency calls and if I try to make a call I see "Not registered in network" message. After reboot it asks unlock code again.
Second case:
If I do "restore to factory defaults" and turn it on the first time with my (no orange) SIM card, it asks unlock code I enter correct unlock code (salesman gave me one, and after that I also bought the same code in the Internet )
it hangs with phrase "Unlocking SIM card...". (Actually "turn off menu" works, I even can make an emergency call, but that is all I can get from it)
Also I noticed that in the first case there is strange line on the bottom of the screen (of the size of the notification bar).
I have tried different ROMS (original, rooted, latest, modacos) all the same. I only didn't try to downgrade radio firmware. I don't know if it can help. I upgraded to latest one even before I get the unlock code. As I already mentioned I also tried all SIM card I can obtain, the problem is obviously doesn't caused by SIM/Network incompatibility. Btw, my SIM card works OK in another HTC Hero (which was bought with my one).
I think it is problem with unlock procedure itself, not with code correctness. If wrong code entered it must say something like "wrong code", but for any 8 digit code it says "Network unlock successful". Is is the symptom! )
I do not know what to do further
Ok, I have now had a reply from Unlock Now, they said it must be an issue my phone (although we have now established it's an issue with orange phones) but they did refund my payment.
I'll keep looking into this and post back if I find anything out.

I bought the same unlock code on two different sites, finally both did refund It is OK, but what will we do further?
I've decided started a new thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=560105) as I don't think it is just a problem with Three sims as the Vodafone one I tried didn't work.
I'll still post back here if we get any useful info.
My phone (Topaz 6.5) is running on Telus new UMTS network which is mainly a shared network with Bell. The sim card has two networks in it 302220 (Native Telus) and 302880 (Shared Bell/Telus). The nework I see when scanning for networks is 302880 but the phone always shows the roaming warning triangle.
I have been going through the forum trying to figure out the roaming warning issue without any luck. I have tried multiple tweaks to get rid of the warning like the reg tweak disableroamingindicator but nothing seems to work.
Any ideas on how to disable the warning or even better get the phone to accept that it is actually home.
Thanks!

Tried it in any and all RIL folders and it doesn't work unfortunately.
i have the exact same problem. I haven't found a fix for it yet either...
Sony X1a
I signed up for Telus and have an x1a, I have the same problem. I did however get the LG IQ when I signed up. I was wondering If someone would help me dump the device and maybe there be a cab or we can find the settings to allow other windows mobile devices to show Telus as home.

Did this ever get solved?? I have the same problems on a Tilt 2.
Tilt 2
I still haven’t found anything; I keep searching the net with no success. I got an unlocked Tilt2 on eBay and when I put the TELUS sim card in it didn't show the roaming indicator, it also shows the proper name in the network settings "TELUS UMTS". Once I used Hard-SPL Unlocker for Rhodium and flashed a custom ROM the symbol showed up again. I'm not sure where it is located (Either ROM or radio) that the device things it's roaming.
Anybody else have any ideas?

So this is the exact same problem that I have with my Bell SIM. Any of the cooks got any ideas how we could solve this?
Just curious, does this actually harm any functionality at all? i.e. is it purely a cosmetic issue of the indicator itself appearing?

Most applications restrict data usage if they think the phone is roaming. We can disable this on a per-application basis but if the phone is ACTUALLY roaming then be ready for a very large bill.
Just to add it is just a real pain. And risky if you live near the border.
Same problem here in Austria... Would be very nice if we could find something
regarding this!
So any ideas who might be able to solve is it an HTC problem?
So still no solution on this issue? I am sure LG iQ (a winmo phone) doesn't think it's roaming while on TELUS network. Maybe somebody can pull registry info from it to help us resolve this problem?
It is really annoying as pretty much nothing works without confirming first regarding the roaming.
Tilt 2 Registry
I'm on Telus and have a Tilt2. The original ROM that came with the unit didn't show the roaming triangle. I have attached some screen captures of the ROM. I've attached a copy of the registry (Remove the .cab it was the only way I could get it to upload).
Hopefully somebody can find where the settings are located and hopefully it's contained in the registry.
I have an unlocked Tilt 2 that i bought on eBay. It also says it is roaming. Is it because of the Telus Native + Telus/Bell networks or is there something in the phone that thinks it must be roaming if it leaves AT&T's network?

It's something specific to Telus as these phones on a Rogers SIM do not indicate roaming.
NO since the home network is basically hardcoded into the software.(except OEM unbranded nexus or 1300$ iphone 3gs)
its pretty simple, its the os software that comes on the "carrier branded" software that hides the roaming triangle ie: the fido branded pearl, has no roaming, but the unlocked pearl, with a competitors software will show roaming, can't get any easier than that.
Rogers and Telus PLMN compared
I'm not sure if this will help,
I have attached a picture of the PLMN from a Rogers sim and a Telus sim
Maybe someone knows how to adjust the information on these lists.
Im running into the same problems. Rogers HTC Dream with a Telus SIM. Its not giving me data services though which I find frustrating because I am currently paying for them.
I bought a AT&T Samsung Focus for super cheap. I have the data running just fine and fast, however, it seems that MMS is a big pain in the butt. I can't get it to work at all. Anyone use Chevron WP7 in the past to get to the hidden MMS settings? I tried to load up ChevronWP7 but that it doesn't seem to work anymore either...
Samsung has updated its own Network profile tool in the market that allows you to set up the MMS settings. There is no need to hack your phone anymore.
I wish this was the case... however... I bought a phone which appears to still be "locked" to AT&T's network. The issue is the used phone may be connected to some kind of "AT&T" Contract? I got the ChevronWP7 NetProfile.xap to work but it's pretty much the same thing - just doesn't work.
yep something is still locked in the at&t focus. have one in new zealand and the samsung network profile tool only shows me the at&t profile to select from. MMS doesn't works for me either.
Alright this is not just me. The MMS APN is locked away somewhere... probably won't have the MMS unlock without some tweaking from the community for 10 months. Samsung has gone on file saying they were "protecting" AT&T and other providers.
Yeah, same here. Using my focus in Norway and everything works perfectly except for MMS (and of course the marketplace which we don't have over here yet).
Haven't been able to find a solution to this anywhere. MS is aware of this and says it's on their prio-list, but Samsung says that it's designed for use with a specific carrier.
Yes... I'm stuck here too without Chevron. Phone is unlocked (I paid for unlock code) but there is no FIDO network name to choose from for the MMS setting.

I got mine unlocked. I'm using it on Telus.
The only way I got chevron to work was after I had reformat windows. I reinstalled an older version of zune and it worked.
Not exactly the best solution but the only that worked for me.

pardon my ignorance, I have never used the function, but isn't there an "add apn" on the bottom of the cellular menu in settings? what does this do?

The APN is only for Data. MMS is actually a cell hone function (like SMS) and it seems without Chevron, there is no way to change the settings.
Hi guys, I'm new to this part of XDA, mainly because I dont own a Wildfire & I'm posting this on behalf of my dad - to whom the phone belongs to. Anyway... Lets get down to business!
The Story:
- I recently went on holiday so I got my phone unlocked to any network. (It is still unrooted, branded etc just as it was on day one)
- While on holiday we got a local SIM so we wouldn't get bombarded with massive roaming charges
- Everything was fine and dandy on holiday
- When we got back to the airport back home the original SIM card was put back into the phone, but it wouldn't show any signal
The Problem:
If you went into "About phone" > "Network" the following is displayed
Operator name: Unknown
Signal strength: 0
Mobile network type: Unknown
Service state: Out of service
Roaming: Not roaming
But if you go into the testing menu it shows that there is signal and comes up ~-99asu or there abouts
But if I go into mobile network and try to select a network manually I just get "your sim card does not allow a connection to this network" and my lock screen displays "Limited service"
The Attempted Fix:
Here's a list of things I've tried to do to fix it with no avail:
- Changing SIM cards (every SIM doesn't work - even those that do work in other phones)
- Rebooting
- Factory resetting
- Turning radio off & on in hidden testing menu
- Shouting at it really loudly
- Changing WCDMA prefered thing (Does't do anything, just reverts back)
- Phoning up Three UK (Originally bought from)
They say they didn't do anythng to the phone i.e. Accidentally blacklist it
- Phoning up HTC
They say phone up Three - it's their problem
- Phoning up Three... Again!
They say go into a Three store and they'll diagnose the problem and try to fix it
- Going into a Three store
They say phone up the SIM card company I used abroad - No, really. They did say that!
- Phoning up random foreign SIM card company
It was a pain top finally get someone who spoke English, They told me to ask Three! AAAAAARRRGHHH
So basically, I thought i'd come to you guys for help. Have you any suggestions? Who should I pointlessly call next? Have you seen this problem before? Am I mad for trying this hald already? Is the phone just borked? Are all the network providers just idiots? Do I have any option other than to smash this into lots of tiny pieces and buy a new phone?
I still think it's one of the carriers faults for accidentally blacklisting it, but they wont listen. Is there anyway I can unblacklist it without going through the carriers. Is there any regulatory body that will help me in doing that (I'm in the UK)
Thank you very much XDA Community!
Did 3 check your apn settings where correct?
Normally a carrier will phone you back on a different phone line so you can check the settings are correct or you can find them via Google.
The apn settings are located in settings/wireless & networks/mobile network/access point names (I think that's the correct path)
I think after a factory reset it should ask which network (apn) you want to connect to, it did on mine. I got 3 options o2 prepay, o2 post pay or giffgaff.
Reason I ask is I didn't see any mention of apn in your post and this is important as you cannot connect to any carriers network if the apn is missing or wrong.

Hummmm... It looks like something is damaged. If the phone is covered by warranty, use it. If don't, you can always try to reflash the original firmware or rooting it and falsh a custom ROM.
This is all I can say. Hope you get an answer soon.
