3G in Los Angeles, CA - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam General

Does anyone know anything about this? Does Cingular support 3G in Los Angeles yet? I'm getting an 8525 today and just curious as to whether I'll have 3G features yet.

I heard sometime back that 3G was suppose to rollout in LA area by Christmas .. dont know if there were any updates after that ..

3G in LA
I was told Mid November.
For the first time today the magic U icon has started to appear. I am in Irvine, CA

magic U has something to do with 3g? I still feel like they were waiting to release the 8525 until they had 3G in LA. Would be sweet if that was the case.

"U" showing up on your TyTN/8525 means it's on the Cingular UMTS network .. basically 3G is working ..

Which 3G Network?

Im looking at buying a 3g phone, mainly for the odd web browse while im out. I live in rural west wales (uk)and I was suprised to find the the nearest town (aberystwyth) has 3g coverage by all networks except tmobile.
What i'd like to know is although it looks like HSDPA is currently not enabled by any network in this area (going off the coverage maps) who would be the best bet for rolling it out first?
At the moment im leaning going towards orange as they have slightly better coverage then the rest, 02 being second, voda 3rd and suprisingly 3 last.
Its a shame its so hard to find out network rollout plans!

TMobile USA 3G rollout

The USA 3G rollout for TMobile seems to have been pretty quiet... had a few questions if anyone out there has any info. I have a universal, I live in San Francisco, and I've been driven to alcoholism by the slow speeds of GPRS. I heard that T-Mobile's 3G network has been working here in SF for a month or so, NY had it a few months ago, and that today is the "official" launch of the nationwide(big cities only) 3G network for them.
I've been trying to get it working on my universal for a little while now with zero success. Has anyone gotten 3G working in the USA on their Universal? Is it even possible? I don't really know where to start.
I read this thread, and it wasn't very encouraging. I'm hoping that new information has come to light since then. I'd go into a store and ask, but store associates tend to be hit-and-miss(mostly miss) with their levels of expertise, and they're probably too busy selling G1s anyway.

Nexus still has this issue I gave my wife my nexus and got the Hd2 for this reason
I'm in the San Jose Area and I don't have that problem.
same problem here in Olympia. went to the store to see what was up and the awesome clerks were more confused then i was
I'm not experiencing any issues like that here in Virginia Beach, VA. Sorry to hear about that, I know it would frustrate me!
Same city, Constant 3G at home but there are some areas of San Jose that I notice no signal or very weak signal. T-Mobile Store on Curtner for example.
same problems in Denver.
lost my tethering connection a few times due to this. I forced it to just the GSM/EDGE band, it's more reliable, but is SLOOOW.

WCDMA/HSPA: 1700 MHz (AWS) / 2100 MHz
has anyone tried a different radio ROM yet?
nope. and no word as to if the 2.09.51.03 radio works on the stock rom.

I'm wandering if the other 3g mobile devices of tmobile have this..
Seems like Nexus One issue
I have the same issue, fluctuating from 3 bar 3G to 3-4 bar edge.
From what I read on other forums Nexus one seems to have had the same issue on TMo network. I am not sure if it is resolved yet.
I am kinda having the problem but I was told because they are about to launch HSDPA in my area so they have been turning it on and off alto so its messing with my reception and going from E to 3G to H and back and forth

HSPA+ Question

For those who live in an area with HSPA+, I was wondering if it would show an H for HSPA+ (like e for edge, E for EDGE, 3G for well...,) on the stock ROM. Because I live in Los Angeles and it looks like T-Mobile is finally rolling out HSPA+ out here in their latest press release and would like to know what connection my phone is using. (Current ROM/Radio in my sig.)
I think you would have to load a custom rom or cab file for that. I still use the stock rom as well and only see 3g here in Tampa. Try doing a search.
i have a question live in nj and i know that hspa is in ny. i just did a speed test at speakeasy.net/speedtest and i got 3.29mbps download and 1.14 mbps upload. sorry i am a noob when it comes to this is this any good. not to mention tmo hasnt announced hspa in nj
i am also interested in knowing if angone does get an h cuz i only see 3g

Im in Tampa, one of the markets just officially announced as having HSPA+. HSPA+ was actually turned on here in Tampa last week. I had a Tmobile sales rep visit the company I work for yesterday and he confirmed it was turned on last Wed, I noticed the speed bump last Thur
However the indicator still shows 3g
I love how fast I can upload full 5mpix images to twitpic now, used to have to sit and twiddle my thumbs for about a minute or two. They seem to upload in about 30 seconds now. That was how I noticed the speed upgrade last Thur, I was literally like WTF an image has never uploaded that quick.

The stock tmo ROM won't display an "H"...you'll have to install one of the many available custom taskbar icon sets for it to show that. However, I have yet to see any confirmation that having the "H" displayed on your taskbar means anything other than just the fact your connection (i.e. your closest tower) is capable of HSPA7.2 or better...regardless of whether it has the backhaul connection to support it or not.
And since my first Energy rom 2 1/2 months ago it's switched between 3G and H all the time, way before HSPA+. Now speed is the only gauge to know if I have HSPA+ or just HSPA.
I'm currently just out of HSPA+ range north of Seattle... 2 miles south I get 5.7mbps speedtests, at home still suffer with 900kbps even with H and 4 bars showing.

I am going to guess that the ROMs that differentiate between 3G and H are probably showing 3G for UMTS and H for HSPA/HSPA+
so my hspa speeds are all over the place one Minute they are below 500kb/s the next they are over 2000kbs .. odd i say

Mine seem pretty consistently in the 2mbit download 1mbit upload, but ive seen spikes as high as 5mbit for download. probably all depends on how good the signal is in your area and the load on the cell tower that you are on.
That's what I was figuring sirphunkee (outside of just downloading a icon set to show H). Thanks all for your answers guys.

T-Mobile HTC HD2 Network Issue

Ok, so I'm on vacation in Florida on Marco Island which on T-Mobile's coverage map is like, SUPER equipped for data (well at least from what I saw which was a deep purple). The problem is, on my phone all I'm getting is full bars of GPRS (A G right next to my bars) and I'm not getting 3G for some reason. At where I live, in Downers Grove Illinois, I get 3G everywhere so I'm really curious as to why I can't get 3G when I have GPRS in a well covered area.

Worth a shot since it happened to me. Go into band selection. Mine lost 3g before and nothing was selected for gsm or wcdma. It hit auto and it found it after a reset. Did that like 2 times. If you do a network scan, i would see both 3g and 2g networks but none i did would put it on 3g. This was not with stock rom though. (I live just outside downers grove. Love the area.)

If you are running a custom rom some have a switch to turn off 3G in the comm manager. I had that issue and realized that 3G got turned off some how.
I would guess this was because of the storm yesterday. I am in michigan and got the storm after you guys got it. Lightning struck two tmobile towers up here. I would not be surprised if your area had a few outages because of the storm.
yeah i have the 3G switch on ALL the time so I don't think that's the problem and i did try switching to GSM, reseting, turning 3G on, resetting a lot and to no avail do i get 3G signal still and I'm going home tomorrowanyway so thanks for the help.
