I've noticed this problem on numerous occasions. When the reception is so poor and the phone looses contact with the network and you go to an area where the reception is better, the phone does not reconnect automatically. I've had to Enable flight mode (effectively turning off phone mode) and then disable flight mode (turning it on again) twice before the phone reconnects with the network.
Anyone else notice this problem? Is it a hardware issue or a firmware one? Any fixes?
See if this helps: disabling UMTS. Significant improvement in GSM performance even tho it's a bit of a hassle:

Hi all, I have WM6 almost for week now and first I was very pleased by it as the SD card issue seems to be fixed, but I started noticing a weird phone behavior. For example, Sometimes I'm not able to turn off the flight mode, sometimes my phone stops showing signal and I have to soft-reset but the most annoying thing is, that the signal reception seems really weak. I'm not able to make a call from many places where I could before. Just entering a building makes the indicator to drop half down. Does anybody have the same experience?
For me, the signal recepetion is the same than Windows Mobile 5.
No changing
I dont know if anyone else has ever had this problem but my Niki doesnt seem to come out of standby. When switched on all is well you can call and recieve calls too, as soon as the backlight turns itself off and it goes into standby the screen doesnt want to light up again. The green indication light is still on but no visable screen. Any help from anyone would be much appriciated.
Ive tried installing a new ROM but it still keep on doing the same thing.
I had the Standby of Death SOD this is when the phone fails to come out of standby with a power button press. This issue only affects some people on some networks. I'm not sure if its a network problem or a software problem but as only a minority of people have it, I suspect its mainly a network problem there is a software solution.
The solution is to change the phone settings band option from auto 3G/2G to either 3G Only (WCDMA + UTMS 2100 in Europe) or 2G Only (GSM) depending on your requirements.
Also read this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=540943&highlight=standby&page=2where the resolution was to get a new SIM.
Obviously this only solves the problem when the crash is because of the sim and/or settings which impact the sim. To rule out a software cause its best to start with a hard reset.
Is anyone else here having similar problems with the radio on their HD2? Mine seems to crap out severely when it comes to 3G. I have notice dhtat just about every time the phone is powered on, it will turn the data connection in the settings off by default regardless of It's state when the phone was previously powered on.
Also, I have noticed sometimes the phone will sporadically switch out of 3G mode and into phone only mode and I must go into the settings menu and re-enable it.
Also, Sometimes (The phone has done this twice today so far), the phone will still indicate that it is in 3G mode but when I attempt to browse the web it will return a page cannot be found error and the only way to fix this is to go into settings, disable and then re-enable the data connection.
My current radio version is 2.08.50.08_2. Is there something better out there?
I had the same problem with the data connection shutting off. I downloaded HD2Tweak and it helped keep it on.

It's been a while, but I think I got it here. It was the English version.

Under "4. Data", I turned on Internet, MMS and Data to be on permanently. Worked like a charm. First day, I had 13 hours straight of data connection. Before using HD2Tweaks, I never had more than 20-30 minutes.
I've noticed today the 3G connection went from full bars to none and also no phone bars.. and it reconnected again.
Sometimes it will not reconnect to signal for a while after I leave underground train station.
In areas of weak-medium signal strength, I've noticed it switch between E and 3G a lot and drain battery much faster.
The signal reception is generally excellent in the city, except if inside a building with thick walls, so I don't understand why it has signal issues when outside.
Anyone else having this problem? I don't remember having this happen on my MT3G.
It's really eating up the battery.
I am on JI2, and I never experienced this until last night after using Odin.
you have to change the wifi sleep policy in the wifi settings. Got to settings, wireless networks, wifi, then press the menu button and select advanced.
OMG! thanks, you're a real life saver.
Sorry to bring up an old thread. I have it set to never sleep but it still does. Any ideas? Seems when the display times out, it switches off wifi.
I have wifi on all the time at home and it's set to never sleep. Sometimes I see both the wifi and 3G icons. I know my wifi signal is strong, so no idea why the phone sometimes also seems to need a 3G data connection. One example is when I test GPS at home the 3G icon will pop up briefly. Another is following a reboot. But I see other times as well, and sometimes it stays for quite a while, but eventually goes away. I wonder if perhaps some ports get blocked by my router and the phone uses 3G communication to get around it. Bit of a mystery, but I don't see any other negative symptoms.
Here is something I have experienced. This is regardless of what ROM I am on.. Stock, Bionix, whatever...
I have wifi turned on at work. Sometimes I would see wifi and 3g on at the same time.
Now today, while texting, I noticed that my Wifi connection dropped to nothing, and at that point my 3g kicked in, which I expect it to. But when my Wifi reception kicks back up again, my 3g didnt turn off. I turned off Wifi and turned it on again, and my 3g turned off.
Anyone else getting the same experience?
samnada/ELStiko, That's what I'm really seeing too as I thought my wifi was just going to sleep.

I'm pretty sure my wifi isn't going to sleep. The wifi icon is on all the time with at least 3 bars. My cell signal is definitely weaker in my location. So, if it's seeking the strongest signal my wifi will always win.
Besides the possibility that my router is blocking some ports the phone wants to use, there's also a possible security issue. I know at one point the TMO My Account app would force a switch to cell communication versus wifi and I believe it was due to security concerns. Maybe some apps do the same thing.
I just did a GPS test, got a lock, stopped the test, closed the app, and the 3G icon stayed up for a couple of minutes then went away. Just one example.
Does seem odd, but I've just assumed there's some rational explanation. Could also be a bug...
your lucky you wake up and you have 3g. i wake up my phone is always on edge. lol

Ever since switching to CM7 (7.1 and 7.2 RC1) I have had the problem that whenever the phone loses its GSM signal, it has trouble reconnecting - even when signal is known to be good.
In most cases the phone will subsequently show "full signal" but when trying to make a call, it turns out there is in fact no connection. In the mean time the phone is burning up the battery in record time trying to re-establish the connection. Switching to airplane mode and back just makes the phone lock up partially, only powering down and restarting restores the connection.
On the net I have found similar problem descriptions, but no solutions... other than trying different baseband setups (which didn't help). I would greatly appreciate any suggestions for a fix!
