Occasional phone/SMS ringtone stuttering on XDA Exec - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro General

Hi everybody. I've only recently purchased my XDA Exec (£194 from eBay and in mint condition). Having upgraded the ROM to the latest official o2 AKU2 ROM (including extended ROM) it's running nicely and apart from a few minor niggles, I love it to bits.
I'm wondering if one of the minor niggles is fixable. Sometimes (regardless of how many active tasks are running) I'll get stuttering in the ringtones. This happens with WMA or WAV tones and with both incoming calls and text messages. Using default tones or imported third party tones makes no difference. Sometimes they will play fine and sometimes not. I can't pin it down to any particular cause. The only thing I have noticed is that the battery level icon sometimes flashes at the same moment that the stutter occurs, suggesting that perhaps whatever background task is updating the battery meter, may also be interrupting the sound.
Is this a known problem with the Exec and the other versions of the Universal? More importantly, is there a fix? To have stuttering ringtones in a device with such good specifications is a little unfortunate to say the least!
Your input would be greatly appreciated. I should add that the phone is running in corporate mode, although I didn't abort the installation of the extended ROM (as favoured by some).
Any thoughts?

Have u noticed this prob without memory card also (while removing it)

No, but I'm not inclined to insert and remove the card much (if ever).
Going back to my original question, is there anybody out there that does not have stuttering ringtones now and then? I'm curious to know whether this is a software or hardware issue because if it's software then hopefully it can be cured.
Thanks in advance.

If it's the same problem as mine, it's probably hardware limited. Loading/playing the ringtone while waking up the device seems to be too much for it to handle, and ringtone may stutter....
Michael

Thanks for replying bheam. I was beginning to think the same thing, but I've also had the ringtone stuttering when the device is already switched on (delivery reports for text messages for example).
Anyone out there with a different version of the Universal (other than the XDA Exec) who never has this issue?

Qtek9000 1.30.96, no such a problem, wav or mp3 ringtones playing well...even 1Mb files...but I have always more than 20Mb free ram.

Jasjar 1.90.96 ROM too doesn't have any prob

Thanks for your input guys. Well I'm assuming that hardware wise the XDA Exec is identical to the JASJAR, Qtek and various other versions. If so it must surely be a software issue? I run my Exec with the bare minimum of extra software and in fact the problem existed before I installed anything so I'm 99.9% sure it's not anything I'm running. Hmmmm, the plot thickens.....

Nevermind, just saw the last line of your first post, sometimes i wish there was a delete button on this forum.

Y dont u give it a try to upgrade it to AKU 3.2 ROM.

Sorry, I just remember that fact when I was using my old magician. I had that suttering problem on it. It was a problem of priority of audio process during a call. A freeware called GB soft tweak, which add some features for gprs connections, purpose to fix manually the priority of audio. And when fixeed at maximum, no more su-su-su-suttering on ringtones. At the beginning of the love story with my 9000, I reinstalled that freeware (wich has been updated for Universal, wizard and in general win2005) but it was useless on my pda which playes ringtones fluently. So, I desinstalled and forgot that soft... So let's have a try on it...

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I'm a little reluctant to use an unofficial ROM. I'm hoping it won't be long before o2 release a AKU 3.2 ROM themselves.
As for the tweaking program, I'd already looked at that but would rather change the registry entry manually (since I assume that's all the tweak prog is doing). Anyone know where the audio priority key/string resides in the Exec registry?
Regards to all.

Exec summary after just over a week of use...

Here's my comments after just over a week of use so far (O2 Exec Corp install with GBP Weather, IPToday, MagicButton installed)
1. Frustratingly slow when typing text messages, when using the inside keyboard there appears to be a delay between pressing the key and the letters actually appearing within the body...why?
2. The phone is frustratingly slow as well, when dialing sometimes the dialing tone isn't even made for some keypad numbers although the number is still dialed
3. Hanging up appears to take some time, around 2 seconds upon pressing the hangup button
4. Waking up the machine from it being turned off (standby) takes a few seconds before it becomes usable?
5. Answering calls when the Exec is closed with screen inwards...is this possible and if so how do you hold it to ensure the person can hear you, and likewise?
6. I need a GPS unit, am I best with wired/wireless (which had best battery length?), but don't want to spend a lot, any recommendations?
Thats about it for now but its enough to cause me issues...the things sexy, there's no doubt about that, but needs A LOT of tweaking - why did they not release it with a little more ram? 256 perhaps, is that the answer?
Appreciate your help!
Dude, you truly need to read thro this forum. All of these issues have been covered extensively, and most (all?) of us now have highly efficient, sleek, and fast machines. It's a bit unfair to ask people to post the answers again...
Spend some time then ask us for help on the couple of issues you truly cannot solve - you will then get a lot of support.
I've been through the entire forum and generally can't find a conclusive forum that solves the problems here!!! Unless I'm missing something...?
The main problem is that people don't name their subjects appropriately, and instead put 'Help me please...' or similar - doesn't help searching at all.
Could you point me in the right direction?
ashley,
if you hard reset (back/save first) your Exec and select Corporate mode (code is 0506) you Exec will have more user memory and will run faster. If you install GSPocketmagic++ it will be even faster.
I hope this helps.
Thanks dude, did the Corp install as my first measure anyway, but haven't yet tried PocketMagic, I'll give that a go and have a search on the forum to see what it does!
Can anyone direct me to a GSPocketMagic download? I don't seem to be able to find an English download?
http://www.pocketpcfreewares.com/en/index.php?soft=1276
However, I would recommend smallmenuplus; it has a freeware version, and I'd recommend paying for the full version's bells and whistles.
It's "based" on gspocketmagic (whether legally or not is still a debate I think), but it has improvements which make it a better option. Some of the boys have had a debate about whether gsp++ introduces a magic bullet that somehow speeds up the Universal. I don't think so, both are just good and efficient task managers. SmallMenu seems to provide the same and better functionality.
I'm not knocking GSP++, but SmallMenu is a more finished product.
My Smallmenu setup:

Thanks guys - I've just installed PocketMechanic and having run the Registry Cleaner my system is ALREADY running faster (half the time to execute apps now!)...so for anyone with similar problems, I suggest you start there!
Will get PocketMagic++ on there a little later tonight, and thanks again!
Vijay555,
So does SmallMenu also speeds up the HTC Universal without GSPocket Magic installed?

Opera8.5 beta2 released!New tab-browsing feature

Pretty cool tabs!No annoying expiring-promption any more. And faster.but you still need some hack to opera.ini to move the cache files to your card.
:? Just wonder why opera still insistes on allocating the cache in the rom.

sweet! lokking goode m8!
I just really like to know how to reduce the top address bar to QVGA :? and set the Display a lower % (example 90% or 75%) as default.
Been waiting for this. I may even purchase it at the expiry date!!! From first impressions and usage, this is the best 3rd party browser yet... I just wish there were more options like the ability to 'save as' a picture, like you can in PIE. Or background loading of tabs (as in firefox) and options for where to store downloaded files and cache.. i.e. I want to store them all on the storage card..
SORT IT OUT PLEASE.. Lets not make a opera out of it!!!
Hi
I'm trying to use Opera without a GPRS connection, ie using the usb cable connected to my pc. The problem is that it fails to connect.
Does anyone have any idea's?
Thanks in advance

Mine seems to be working when connected through Activesync. Great program so far. So much faster to load than Netfront and more full featured than PIE.
MiniMo will be better (it already works with Google Maps) but there's still a lot to be done. Opera follows suit with Explorer by taking columns of data and presenting them in a single column. For sites like this one, that means a LOT of scrolling up & down. You can choose not to fit to the screen, but then you have a lot of left/right scrolling too.
We really just need some 800x600 Universal-style devices with accelerated 2D chips...
I tried this on my wizard but it seems that the font on the address bar is not properly displayed. It looks like some weird language when i write on the address bar. Anybody experience this?
I'm experiencing the strange text as well, reminds me of the old "Dingbats" system font, just a bunch of symbols. Maybe we can find our common factor here, I'm running the new AKU2 rom without the ext rom installed (I tried mucking with it, which deleted it, and then did a hard reset).
EDIT: Mysteriously switched to a usable font, unfortunately I have no idea why
it so much better then then IE its not even funny
Yes i am using the new Aku2 Imate Rom without extended rom. How could you make yours working.
I'd like to try it but don;t want a full Vario. What is the ini hack to put cache on sd? Is there maybe a thread discussing Opera an tweaks somewherer?

My Vario 2 doesn't vibrate anymore

Since a couple of days, my MDA Vario 2 stopped vibrating when I get a phone call or a new message. I tried the volume settings (vibrate) and the phone settings (call & vibrate), but none of that helps. I also tried enabling / disabling event sounds (as can be read in another thread) but that also doesn't help.
I'm using ROM 1.21.114.3 (Dutch T-Mobile 20 june 2006).
Who can help me???
Btw, I tried updating the ROM to the latest HTC ROM, but the upgrade failed. (luckily my phone still works ;-) )
I had this same problem and also my vario2 included parts of emails when sending text messages, contacted t-mobile uk they was aware of these problems and done a software update, since ive had it back theres been no problems.
I remember that this can be caused by a certain software used to disable led blinking - did you install anything like that? Don't remember the name right now, but if you used it you will know, I suppose.
The leds and vibrate function use same library, so disabling first will disable the other, too.
I've not installed a program that modifies the led. I used PocketZen, but vibrating worked fine. I tried uninstalling it, but vibrate still doesn't work. I'm now using a T-Mobile ROM. I'm considering updating to another ROM to see if the problem disappears.
Ringer/Speaker Not Working
Sorry I can't help, but I'd to throw in a problem that I'm having.
My ringer/speaker no longer works. I've tried all of the volume/ringer setttings to no avail. Possibly a hardware issue?
I've updated my ROM to the latest HTC ROM, but this didn't solve my problem. :-(
Anybody any ideas on how to solve this?
Im having the exact same problem too, sometimes the vibrate works, sometimes it doesnt (more often than not), its totally random!!
At first I thought it might be someting to do with the strong magnets in the leather case affecting it somehow?? But now im not so sure:S
It only started a week or so ago but its soooo annoying and I dont really want to go throught the hastle of a hard reset or anything in a "just to see if it fixes it" thing.
If anyone has a solution (preferably not sending it off) I'd love to hear it!!
You could try installing PhoneAlarm, this application does a lot more, but one of it's functions is to set alarm/vibrate etc, it also has profiles and you can control wifi/bluetooth etc etc from it. Downside is that it's a Today plug in.
But, it does have a trial, and might be useful to see if it will correct your ring/vibrate probs.
Hello, everyone.
I am a newbie to Dopod838Pro. I have learnt a lot from this forum.
My phone has stopped vibrating, too. I have tried installing phonealarm and even hard-reset.
It still does not vibrate.
Anyone knows how to solve the problem?
(I guess the problem started when I was "too quick" to dismiss a notification. I dismissed it before the phone had vibrated.)
Possible solution for some see here:

what is better?

since our wizards are not so powerful in sense of cpu and memory, is it better to have almost clean rom without touchflo and htc home and those functions to replace with spb pocketplus and weather, or even with more simple rltoday + some other weather plugin (without smart scrolling function)?
Hum... thats one of those questions thats kinda up to you decide what works best, according to your needs. If you really want a clean ROM, meaning standard apps and all, you go with the official ROM's from your phone provider.
I rather use specific software to do what I need than use a plugin that does everything and some stuff I don't want.

This is from usability point of view, and what is better from performance point of view? All you need (and do not need) in rom or light rom with lot of add-on softwares?
Lets see... if you have all the apps built in the ROM, you won't be able to remove them if an update comes along, you can overwrite them tho, meaning you'll have probably some junk after a while.
If you have a light ROM, if its really good, you won't have any problems with it and you can install whatever you wish as an add-on. Sometimes when you put some software thats not supposed to work with our devices (like HTC Home Plugin, for example) it will slow it down... but if you have it built in on the ROM, it works just fine. That is due to memory allocation problems that do exist on the WM devices. For instance, that was what kept us from installing the Touchflo drivers on Wizard WM5 devices.
Hope that helps you
programs inside the rom dont use any storage or ram of a device unless started
not using all the space in the rom dont make it faster really
so it's better if one removes something to put something else in it's place
because programs installed my the user does! take up storage
and of cause only ram if started
dferreira, as i can see you are using wm5. why? is your build of wm5 faster then original one (i have t-mobile). currently i am using pdaviet wm6 built.
after flashning it i was surprised how fast it was. but now after few installed softwares and a month of using it seems to getting slower. is it just my imagination or you also have that experience?
Any ROM behaves like that after a while. Maybe is something to do with the trash WM leaves behind everytime we install something.
Why I use WM5? Because that's the OS that came with our devices. From what I've tested, there isn't a single WM6 that does work without any bugs (missing calls, wifi not working, etc). Also I find that WM6 makes our device drain the battery a lot faster. So I decided to make a WM5 ROM with the stuff we miss the most on WM6.
i presumed that this is similar to windows installed to pc. i will wait for your new 5.1 release and then will give a chance again to wm5.
for sure i will not miss htc cube or flo.
what about better memory management in wm6? is it possible to improve it in wm5?

Phone freezes on incoming call

Once in awhile my phone will freeze when I try to answer an incoming call. If I ignore the call, mute the ring, or don't press anything, it's fine. But if I answer it, it freezes and I have to take the battery out and turn it back on. I'm not sure if it's a problem with the phone or the ROM (Dutty R14). Anyone else have this problem?
Hi.
I tried several roms until now but never had such a problem.
Did you eperience this problem on your previous rom?
If not then you shuould change the rom.Not sure if the radio could have something to do with your problem.
I hope this could help.

When I got the device it was brand new and I tried Laurentius L26 for a couple of days and I don't recall if it did it or not. I only used that ROM for about 2 days though before I installed Dutty R14 and I've had this ROM for the 2-3 months that I've had the phone. On both ROMs I've used the 1.14.25.24 radio which is, as far as I know, the one I need (Austin, TX).
Since you do not remember i would suggest to change the rom, and if the problem persists the maybe is not rom related.About the radio i do not know much about radios but you said that you have the right one for your region.I bought may HD from Romania and i am using it in Hungary, and i changed it a lot of times to different versions(your version 1.14.25.24 and now 1.17.25.09), and all worked, some better than others, but they all worked.that is why i do not understand this RIGHT region thing.
Hope this helps.. and that this is a rom related problem. Good luck.
I'll try changing the rom like you said. The thing I like about this rom is the look, it has the 6.1 style buttons and styling along with the calendar and call history options on the home page. Are there any other roms that offer this?

there are many roms you may like.
usualy there are screenshots of the homepage.
i think that you want the htc manila and not the new htc sense.
As most of the members say there is no rom that someone can say that is the best.
I myself tried maybe 30-40 roms till now, and i still do not know which is the best for me.
So good luck.
i also experienced that on Dutty ROM
what i did was i turned off the password lock and its all fine...
but you can also try another ROM.

topix 3.1.2 is fast, stable, WM6.1.
I flashed a different rom (Energy rom with wm6.5 and manila 2.1) but I still have the problem where I can't answer incoming calls. Could my phone be broken? It's really weird.
similar problem with Diamond
I have similar problem with Diamond before
It freeze sometimes on calls and when i used iGo. I flash it with original rom and problem with calls was solved but it continue to freeze sometimes on iGo. I realosed that it freeze when batterey is low then 40% and works fine when it is full chaged. When I relace batterey with new one poroblem was solved.

It's very hard to test what's causing it because even if I keep everything exactly the same, sometimes it will freeze and sometimes it won't.
Could it be a problem with my settings, HD Tweak settings or something else, clashing with each other?
Or maybe I dropped my phone and broke some of the hardware involved in answering/ignoring calls?
How often it happens? Try to receive a call when it is on charger. If you have a friend with same phone just wasp batteries for some days as test. Try also to kill all not needed processes and see if it can help. Just discover the problem with more tests and statistics (started programs, free memory etc.)
