I think its great but simply to big, u mite as well carry a laptop.......
I really dont think its that big at all
Universal Magician
131.6 X 79 X 21.6 mm 108 X 58 X 18.1 mm
well.. it's about 9mm wider and 2.6mm thicker than my xdaII, or pretty much the size of my xdaII in its case. so i don't think it's really that big =)
I think I'll be getting the Wizard, but only if they ship a faster CPU than what has been touted.
Note the caption below the 2nd & 3rd pictures -- it implies the Universal has a 3.5 mm jack, which is somewhat more standard than the 2.5 mm jack used in previous HTC devices.

Does the 3.5 jack mean the output would be compatible say with a aux input for a car stereo? I've always been interested in connecting my phone to my Mini's aux input but given the nature of the XDA2i's jack I never could do it.
I hope the earphone design and cabling is better on the Universal because they're hardly comfortable on the previous models.

I'm still more interested in the Wizard (Jam 2) though. It still have a keyboard and WifI but is much smaller. Easier to use just as a phone. I don't need a VGA quality display. The only downside is it has a slow CPU. The other option I'm considering is the Ipaq 6515, well the 6715 when it is out as that will also have WiFi and WM 5.0 but with the added benefit of GPS as well.
Every day I read something that makes me want this phone even more. I don't care if it's quite big, as someone else said it's only as big as a 2 or 2i with the leather case and I work in an environment where quite a few have XDA's or other PPC mobiles.
My only headache will be finding somewhere to put it in the car. Come on, Brodit...make me happy again.

Hi All
I have got a iPaq hx4700 that is fast with a nice VGA Screen but I am fed up with having to carry this and a phone around.
I would like the Universal but it is too expensive and also looks rather big.
So I have arrived at the Wizard. Looks good and gets good reviews but how will I find it
Will it run too slowly compared to the hx4700?
The screen will not look that good.
Has anyone owned both?
Ben
The Wizard is a fantastic PDA phone and i love mine it is excellent but it will never be able to hold up against the IPaq hx4700.
If your used to the speed of the 4700 you will definately find the Wizard slower although it's still very good. You will also really miss that screen and storage on the 4700 it will be a case of weighing up features against size.
If you are going to get rid of the 4700 and get a wizard, what condition is your 4700 in and would you consider selling it? PM me?
Matt
I have a hx4700 and a Qtek 9100, but I only use my hx4700 as a gps navigator.
But I also browse the net and using email on it, compared to my 9100 its faster. But regular tasks like using the calendar is almost the same.
I dont know exactly wich apps u are using but there MUST be a difference between 6xxMHz and 200MHz even if the Tiomap cpu is more effective.
I love my hx4700. You could ask your carrier if they sell CF phone cards. I've thought about those myself.
What GPS device do you guys use, do you recommend it? How much was it and where did you get it?
I-Trek M3, rebranded globalsat BT 338,

Holux GPSlim 236 (Sirf Star III)
I have been using it since February.
Works like a charm.
I do recommend it!

I Payed approximately 150€

Same as eut.. The Holux GPSlim 236. Had mine since last August, and I absolutely love it..
Coupled it with Mapopolis..
globalsat BT 338, fast and very good. no progblems.
Aren't both the iTrek M3 and Globalsat BT-338 SiRF III already?
I also got my iTrek M3 from www.semsons.com. Works like a charm ~
BTW, I was looking at their price for Holux GPSlim 236, and it is only $99.99 compared to 150Euros for our European friends...
the US is a much more competitive market ~
Hardware is an old Belkin BT GPS (aka Fortuna Clip-On) flashed to Xtrak2. Software is iGuidance v3. Work fine together. If you can find one of these with Xtrak2 on Ebay it might be a bargain. Note that none of Belkins were Xtrak2 unless flashed by their owners after purchase.

I have an F-tech Solar BlueTooth GPS Receiver that works great. I also used a nemerix chipped i-Blue but sirf star 3 chip is better than the nemerix..
ppl with the global sat 338, how long does it take it for it to make a connection with sat. from cold start?? it takes really long like over a minute. just wondering
Please, Which one out of these is a good buy. I'm new to this GPS thing.

I seen most ppl been using Holux 236 or BT 338. They look quite big
I find there are some others models with just little price difference.
Are they worth it?
models like
Globalsat BT-359W
Holux GPSlim 240
i.Trek M3
Not sure what that Free Arkon Vent is?
I'm using a cingular 8125. HTC wizard. I already have Tomtom 5.21 installed on it.
I originally purchased a bundle from OnCourseNavigator of mapping software and a WAAS-enabled, 20-channel SIRF StarIII Receiver. http://www.oncoursenavigator.com/item.aspx?itemid=6008 It has worked flawlessly on the trips where I've used it.
However, I recently found this site http://www.map4pda.com/download.1.4.htm for maps to pair up with your GPS receiver. This one is sweeeeeet. You can choose whether to use google, yahoo, ask.com maps, or virtual earth for your map provider. It will also tell the closet restraunts, movie theaters, etc... It also integrates to GPS systems and your contact list. You can tell it to move the map to the address of any of your contacts. At that point you can get directions to or from there.
I'm planning to use this find on my next trip in a couple of weeks!! Can't wait to try it out!!

That free thing is the ventilation mount kit a cheep product that is a bundle with the proggie..
cheap lookers head to ebay and search for prices there...
I suggest u to go 4 a chipset selection then come to a model desicion WRT the battery life and other gadgets...
Holux Slim 236
I had the old Holux 230/231. The 236 is REALL fast compared to the old ones.
SiRF III IS FAST.
The reasons why I chose the Holux 236?
- has USB connection and can be used wired with laptop
- battery is compatible with Nokia (cheap and replaceable)
- external antenna connector (in case you reaaaaally need it)
- And obviously, BT was a pre-requisite...
Cheers,
Hal
Hey Hal what is your complete setup for using GPS on your laptop in the car ? I am thinking of going the same route as I have a 10" touchscreen
Good price for a Holux 236
Hi all, saw the post about getting a Holux 236. Just got mine from Nav4All.com for €69,95. It's a special offer and shipping cost is included.
Im using a few gps's
I have 2 BT 77 gps (cheap and reliable) bought them for 40gbp each (about $70 u.s.) - never ever failed to get a good lock.
Also a fortuna bluetooth gpsmart which is plagued by buggy firmware. There is a fix out there but i cannot get a cable cheap enough to flash it
Also Garmin etrex summit which is rock solid reliable. Used as a backup connected to my old xda1 via serial cable
Holux GPS slim 236 works perfectly for me with Tom Tom mobile and GPS dash software and it's about the same sixe as a Zippo lighter.
Hi all, I am after a new GPS reciever and have basically decided to go for a SIRF3 solution.
Could some of you please check these two choices out and maybe offer a little advice on them.
Basically the only differences I can see are that one is unbranded and in the UK and the other is a Holux and is coming in from Hong Kong
Thanks.

I purchased the Holux GPSlim 236 for a friend and it works great with iGuidance v3. I chose it based on feedback from the XDA and Howard Forums.
Second the above. The Holux works perfectly, period.
Thank you both. Any more opinions on this over the weekend would be very much appreciated.
My purchase will be decided no later than Monday and it WILL be based on these replies.
I really need a quality receiver. I have gone through 2 BT-77 units and have found that reception quality fails substantially after around 6 - 8 months.
I don't want to make the same mistakes.
i have the holux works perfectly!!! also using it with iguidance v3
**Edit**
and by the way.. if it helps, my holux has been hooked up and powered on constantly in my car for about 3 months(yes it has constant power, thats not battery life)... and i have only had to restart it once.... i mounted it in my trunk and bought the optional external antenna!!
Another +1 on the Holux unit. I've had mine for about a month. No problems at all, really quick on picking up a GPS singal.

Lol, you must have been reading my mind.
I was having major problems with that BT-77 unit, the one with a globe picture on, and I put it down to constantly being plugged into the car charger.
I think my mind has been made up. It's just unfortunate that the shipping is so much that the total cost is going to be around £70. I dont mind paying the extra if I am getting a KNOWN good quality unit, it's just quite alot more than I really wanted to pay.
Many thanks to you all.
i think mine gets the most abuse, as it sits not far from 2 12" subs and about 1200 watts of power still works flawlessly... i would buy a holux reciever again if i had the need to for whatever reason, its a [email protected] good solid reciever
Globalsat bt-359
I use a bt 359 w/iGuidance 3.0 and it works really well...
Another vote for the Holux. Mine works very well and picks up signal quickly.
Holux 236 is awesome

Hi
I just managed to unlock my mda vario using the advice on the forum .
Now I want to use this for sat nav purpose and install tomtom navaigator 6 europe map. I have already ordered my 2 gb mini sd and dont know which gps to buy from the compatibility purpose.
Can you recommend any gps receiver.
regards
abzee
I've been pleased as punch with my Globalsat 338. People have had good results with teh Holux GPSslim 236, but reports of a bad batch over at gpspassion.com scared me away.
The 338 gets a cold fix in myhouse in about a minute max, and outside is literally like 10-15 secs.
I have just bought the Holux Gpslim 236. Very pleased with it so far
Holux GPSlim 236 - you will not be disappointed.
Holux 236 is fantastic

You won't be disappointed
I have just purchased a Holux 240 from eBay for £51 (from Hong Kong), took 4 days to arrive. Excellent receiver. I have attached it to my keyring and works very well with Tomtom 6. Highly recommended.
The Holux Gpslim 236 is a best-seller at now. The receiver is based on SIRF III chipset that is much better than other older chipsets.
Furthermore, the Gpslim uses a standard Nokia batterypack and can be charged by any mini-USB charger (the same as Wizard's)
I own a Gpslim 236 and I'm happy whit it.
I'm not sure if this company ships to Europe but this is what I bought:
http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=GPT-700&cpc=SCH
The only downside is it takes FOREVER to acquire the first fix but using an external antenna (under $20USD on Ebay) makes it much faster.
It comes with some nav software but I think it's only North America and it looks like out of date crap on top of that.
The best part about it is that the battery and charger connection is standard Nokia so you don't have to worry about not being able to get a car charger or new battery for it!
I've purchased a Globalsat BT359S last week and I am very pleased with it! It's very slim, very very sensitive and get's a quick fix!
I'd go for it again any day!
Take care!
Stefan
Any one with chipset SirfIII will work very well.
I have a I-Blue GPS and I find it great.
