Hi gang. Does anyone know if there is a hack to move the "My Docs" folder to store by default on my super duper 2gb storage card instead of on my device memory.
cheers
My Documents
No difficulty here. Just create a My Documents folder in root directory of storage card, can also put a my documents, my pictures and my videos folder inside it. Plus anything else you may want.
Need to then make sure all your programmes know to save to storage card. Some progs will know to look for these folders others need to be told in their settings menues.
I save nothing to on-board memory and the my documents folders are left on the system memory but remain empty.
Mike

That sort of works, although I have activesync to sync my files, & I can't find anywhere to change this option to look at the storage card. It keeps resorting to the device memory default location.
Many thanks
Shane
I'd been trying to do that, posted previously with no joy

Yes activesync will be more of a problem as you'll see from following links, but might give some possibilities:

Did anyone get this to work on the Tytn?
I have started to play around with this from the Magic instructions, but am having some problems.
Please let me know.

My XDA2 now has a Sandisk 512MB card.
I also have Journal Bar, SPB pocket plus, Lextionary, Pocket Atlas, Pocket Stars, Currency Convertor X, a few games, (and a few others which I ran out of memory).
What I want to know is how exactly do I get the programmes to run from the sd card, so that the XDA2 memory isn't used to store them.
I have tried x-backup, and I have tried cutting the files using file explorer to the sd card, but then the programmes do not run from the start menu.
I'm sure it's something simple but please let me in on it!
So near, and yet so far!
well when you install programs using activesync you can choose between
if you want to install it in main mem or storage
some programs dont work though if you install them to the storage
if you dont want to install the programs again you may be able to edit the shortcut and pointing the path to the new location and some programs may also require some regediting for them to work after being moved
if you dont want to edit the shortcuts then you can just make new ones
whats under programs is just which shortcuts that are located in windows\programs
Thanks for the help.. made sure I said no to installing in default directory.. now to see if each programme works.. Thanks for the help!
Similar position
Hi Gumby I'm in a similar position to you in that I just got a 512Mb SD today and I intend to rebuils my system with appropriate applications on the SD. Have you found out yet which work from the SD and which only work from ROM?
It would be halpful for everyone if we could get a list of what should go where.
I noticed that I have 29 MB allocated to storage memory, of which 23 MB is in use. But I cant recall putting anythign in there to begin with!! And I dont see anything in there when I look at it in file explorer.
ANybody know what would be in there? Does the Jam put things in there? Is there a way for me to see what's in there and clean it out.
Could be anything under My Documents, applications, photos or an accidental video or audio note recording. Or applications from the Extended ROM.
As often is the case with the Pocket PC - there is a utility to help - and it's free.
WIMR (WhereIsMyRam?)

i agree - the Storage folder is a comlpete mystery to me. why do we even need an extended ROM? what msft should do is simple:
1) a user storage area (My Documents) in which there is NO data that is not specifically created by a human (i.e. no application specific files or other machine made folders with obscure names - how often have you looked at something in "My Documents" and thought "what is THAT? and can I delete it?")
2) a device storage area where ALL other files are stored - i.e. Windows files, Program files, etc...
The only exception to 1) should be user settings, playlists, dictionaries etc... but those should be buried, hidden and difficult to access inside one folder in My Documents
Does the stuff in Storage stay where it is after hardreset??
Yes filest that you put in the Storage directory is permanent...and it will be there even after a hard reset.
Regards,
Primoz
Storage is permanent & is used for 'Permanent Save' which you can find under settings/system
Checking the appropiate boxes makes your device sync with this permanent storage after ie. a hard reset.
Works like a charm!
The availablle memory is allocated between storage and programs automatically.

When you hard reset and run the Extended ROM it installs those applications RAM......
Is this possible? I've placed a file in the storage card but when I click on it the screen jumps to "settings" then "today" but the file isn't on the list of choices
Any thoughts?
Cheers
marto.
You have to copy it to the phone's \My Documents folder or |My Pictures in order for it to show up as a choice for your Today Screen theme.
I assume your talking about the "my doc/my pic" folders on the unit and not on the memory card?
What I want is to keep the .tsk files on the card to save space on the mini.
:? marto.
Hello,
Create a folder named My Documents in storage card and place your .tsk files there to get recognized by the device

Yes -- I'm talking about the phone's memory. I have over 400 .tsk files on my storage card, but only copy over a weeks' worth at a time to my phone to use. Once I use it, I delete it. So, at the end of the week, they've all been deleted from the device memory and I copy over 7 more for the next week.
A weeks' worth of files isn't going to take up much storage memory -- about 500 - 600K, and 80 - 100K is being deleted daily as they get used.
I've tried to create a shortcut in the \My Documents folder on the device to use the .tsk file directly from the SD card (which would only use about 45 - 60 bytes), but that didn't work, so the afore-mentioned will have to do for now.
Cheers for that Newbie2 8)
Yep your doing exactly the same as what I am. Obviously thinking the same too a shortcut from the storage card
Bummer with the results though...

Try putting them in the root of the storage card - works on my wizard
while we are on the subject of memory limitation annoyances,
is it possibile to get photos and videos automaticly saved onto the SD card insted of the precious internal memory?
Hello,
Ofcourse it is possible! Get into camera, settings/tools and choose the place to save files.

Ahh, how did i miss that. nice one.
Hello All,
If I copy the ringtones to my storage card the phone (TD2) does not show those ringtone files.
But if I copy the files to main storage (My Documents\Ringtones) it does work.
Is it not possible to have/store my ringtones @ storage card instead of main storage? If YES, Please advice.
Thanks.
Create folder in storage card e.g. "Ringtones" and change path in registry. I've read about it in this forum but can't remember where.
edit : I think the regisrty path is HKLM\Software\HTC\AudioManager_Eng\Config\so there change key ring_tone_path from \My Documents\My Ringtones to \StorageCard\Ringtones

Thanks for the reply. I will try this out. Can you point me to the location where I can download the Registry editor.
Also it will be grt if you can point me to Total Commander for MW too.
Thanks.
Here is regedit and here is tcmd. Tcmd has own registry editor as well, in Plugins/registry.

I have downloaded the regedit (Smartphone 2000, 2003 ARM/PXA) downloaded the CAB in my storage card and installed the application in my device. It installed successfuly and I can see the application in my all programs.
But issue is:
when I start the RegEdit I can see HKCR, HKCU, HKLM AND HKUSERS. But I cant open those keys.. mean there is no sub folders.... I sthere any thing I am missing... or I should download the PocketPC edition 2000, 2003 one?
Can you explain just exactly what it is you are trying to do and why?
You have to download PPC edition. Smartphone is device without touch screen.

I am trying to make my phone read Ringtones from my Memory Card. This require some registry change which "prdic" is trying to help me.
???????????
If I go to the folder on my storage card which includes any sound file (mp3s included) tap and hold the file name an option pop up menu gives just what I think you are looking for!

He don't want the ringtones to be stored on the main memory I'm pretty sure, that's why he asked for this.

Taking up memory? =) Main memory should be used only for \Windows and such, not ringtones, music or pictures. Also it's nice to have all programs on \Storage Card.

Yes I know this one. I've heard it many times before and I've had long forum discussions about it in the past.
May be we should start another thread for those who many have missed the two sides of the argument?

This does work, but I dont want the ringtones to be stored in Main memory or being copied to \My Documents\My Ringtones folder. So I was looking for any config change where it should point to the folder that I want .
PS:
- The Registry change that "prdic" suggested does not work. I tried with \Storage Card\<MyFolder> and \StorageCard\<MyFolder> both did not worked for me. I restarted the mobile too after change.
- And "ArtieQ" you are correct, I dont want the Main Memory to be used for the reasons explained by you. Thanks for that.

Don't get me wrong, I now understand what you you want.
I just don't understand why you want it.
The 'reasons' explained are preferences and accessing memory card storage will slow the process down as it's not as fast as main storage so what is the advantage to using mem card in this way?
OS runs in it's own area so this is not compromised and there's plenty of RAM for any files or apps to be located without problem. This area is faster than mem card as well.
Also if you change mem card for any reason you loose the links anyway.
Plus with all these extra OS calls across the mem bus you run the risk of freezes.
If you need a loaf of bread in a hurry you go to the nearest shop!
ArtieQ-
Can you explain further please?
"Taking up memory? =) Main memory should be used only for \Windows and such, not ringtones, music or pictures. Also it's nice to have all programs on \Storage Card."
Why should main memory only be use for \Windows and such etc?
And why is it nice to have all programs on \Storage Card?
I ask this because I can't see any technical reason for it and I believe it cause operating problems if its done!

1. More memory available = Better performance, and a storage card is used for music and such isn't it? That's the reason why main memory only is 800mb.
2. All programs on storage card instead of main memory = More RAM available = Better performance.
I don't know if it helps, but you can change the location of "My Documents" all together to storage card by using Advanced Config --> Locations.
As for myself, I prefer having the mp3-ringtones in phone memory for quicker access.
Apologies for the simple question but does anyone know how I can move my photos (which are saved on the phone) to my Storage Card?? I want to upload my photos to the computer but my computer only finds the ones on the storage card so i need to work out how to get them there first?
I am sure this is easy but i can't figure it out!
Any help very much appreciated!!!
Thanks

You can either use file explorer (or total commander, resco explorer etc.) on the phone to move the files, or connect to your phone using active sync, so you can see both the phone memory and the storage card. It sounds to me like you're connecting to your PC with your phone as a USB device/disk drive. This only allows you access to the storage card - not the phone memory.
Once you've moved them across, you should probably go into the camera settings and change 'storage' from phone to storage card (you just touch the icon and it will switch over). That'll save you having to move them across every time.
I am a little bit puzzled as to why your computer 'only finds the ones on the storage card'. What are you using to 'find' the photos?
If it's just Windows Explorer, then it should be able to 'find' them on the phone too. They're normally stored in the 'My Pictures' folder, which you can find under 'My Documents' (not the obvious place to look - hence the above explanation, just in case you didn't know to look for them there...).
Thanks johncmolyneux.
But how do i move them across once in File Explorer? I can see all the photos in My Doicument/My Pictures/100MEDIA but how do i physically move them - i can't see it under the menu option??
You are right about me connecting to my PC as a USB - clealry i need to be using ActiveSync.
Thanks again for you help
thanks johnkst
I have now changed the setting on the camera to avoid this problem in the future!!
I think it is because i wasn't using the ActiveSync but the disk transfer option.
Still can't see how to move the photos across (using phone only) even when using file explorer - perhaps i'm just being stupid!
A quick followup question- is there a way of changing the directory on the storage card into which the camera app writes? I want to use a directory off the root of the storage card called "photos", not the one buried in /DCIM/100MEDIA/ etc. Is there a registry setting for this?
Thanks for any help!

Get activesync set up and get your phone connected, then you can right-click the activesync icon and select "explore". You can then explore your phone's folder structure, exactly as you would on your PC, and cut and paste things easily from there.
Thanks
