2G Radio Died after 1 month (MDA Vario II) - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam General

hi Guys,
As far as I am aware this new problem has only happened to me so far.
I bought a new T-mobile MDA Vario II back in September, It had a HTC634 Serial number and I duly checked it for the Screen and keyboard issues that have affected other Hermes models - the phone didn't display these issues at all.
However last Friday the phone developed an unusual problem - It would connect to a 3G signal with no problems at all, but when there was no 3G signal it would not connect to the normal 2G signal. It would just search for a signal and not find a T-mobile 2G signal!
The settings on the phone were as they were when I got the phone (set on Auto in both boxes for phone settings)
I initally thought that it might be a transmitter problem in my area, so I emailed T-mobile, they replied back saying that no problems had been reported. I soft-reset the phone several times and fiddled about with the phone settings, tried the phone without the memory card, but still it did not solve the problem.
I took the 3G SIM which came with the phone and placed it in another phone (Xda Exec), which found both the 2G and 3G signals without any problems at all - so it was not the SIM card. I could not try a different operators SIM in the Vario II since its network locked.
As a last resort I decided to do a Hard-reset, which reset every thing back on the phone to how it was when it was new - This DID NOT solve the problem!
Tuesday night I phoned T-mobile up (tip: If you want to be put through to a human directly and quickly on T-mobile Customer Services, then when the robot starts speaking immediately press 000000 - it puts you straight through and your call should be picked up a lot quicker (<5mins) than using the other options.
I explained my problem, they did an IMEI check and after half a hour on the phone (mostly on hold) they concluded that it was a phone problem and aggreed to exchange the handset (as a handset swap - no battery, box etc)
by courier this Monday.
I just hope I don't gain a few other problems with the exchange handset!

cingular gsm service dropping on 8525

i have a cingular 8525 and since yesterday, it keeps dropping my gsm service completely. like i look at my phone and there is an "X" on the service bars, and the service LED is not flashing. if i soft reset the device, or shut the phone part off and back on, it picks up service again (full bars, as usual). also, i tried plugging my SIM back into my old treo 650, and i dont see this problem. is it related to the 3g network? i haven't made any software changes since yesterday. faulty hardware? really frustrating, help would be appreciated. thanks.

shouldnt be caused by the 3g network, do you have the white 3G sim with the orange flaming 3G on it? This could also very well be hardware or the radio... so many variable with this... i would vote for 3 possible issues, either hardware, radio rom, or sim card.. take your pick.. the sim will be the easiest to try, if you dont have the white 3G then just walk into a cingular store, tell them they sold you the 8525 without the 3G sim and they will replace it for free.. well they did with me anyway

the only disconcerting thing is that i had the HTC TyTn for a month before i got the 8525, and i never had this problem with it, same sim and everything.
here's a thread about it on the cingular customer forums, people having the same problem with their 8525's

good point... i can say that i have had signal issues with both 1.16 and 1.20 radio but not to the extent that you are having, and the new sim solved alot of issues for me in the beginning.. Now i dont have any issues when in a GSM area, only seem to have issues in a 3G area
ok got the new SIM Card, but the problem persists. hardware?
I've had the Cingular 8525 for a week and it has one of the newer 64MB SIM cards (same that the Sierra AirCard 860 uses and required for 3G network access). I haven't had any call dropping problems at all. If it persists I'd get a replacement ASAP.

got myself a brand new 8525 from my local cingular store at the end of last week, and the problem persists. i also have one of the new flaming 3G SIM cards. the only thing i can think of now is the network in my area. any other thoughts/ideas?

did you have this problem prior to the 8525? also go to start>settings>system, then tick device information and tell me what radio version you have

did not have this problem prior to getting the 8525. had a tytn for a few weeks and didn't experience this (although it did have the screen alignment problem which is why i had to get rid of it). i have had the problem with both 8525's. my radio version is 1.16.00.00
Can't add much to the discussion...but I have an SPV M31000 (Orange Tytn Flavor) And ahve the same issue when in an area which switches between UTMS and EDGE. It also appears it will sometimes lock a call.
I can't add too much either. I've got an 8525, and I do experience the issue at my company's current office (thankfully not the one I actually work out of though, as I'm at a client site and rarely at the home office). I find my issue seems to be specifically with being on a fringe area of UMTS/GPRS. GPRS is a much stronger signal that the UMTS, so I see it swapping frequently. Sometimes it drops completely. Weird thing is though that it doesn't happen all the time..

sounds pretty much like what is happening to me. the annoying part is that it doesn't pick up the signal automatically again once i'm out of that fringe area. if that was the case i could live with it, but i miss calls all the time because of this.
HTC TyTn Cingular 8525 Sim and other issues
I have an HTC TyTn since October 12, 2006, and have had a great deal of problems, but none in Japan while traveling, only in the US. Cingular is constatntly changing and upgrading its services, its servers and its policies. My SIM which worked until 12/26//06 never allowed a SMS message through since then? It seems now to be caused by the fact that I have the old SIM, but was never a problem till Cingular upgraded its towers?
The Phone portion will not work well in the UMTS mode, and the techs say that it is because the towers are not all turned on as yet in my area. If you try and have the Outlook and lets say AOL turned on to download, when the phone is in GPRS mode, your calls are blocked when the AOL goes out to check for mesages. The techs say it is not the same on UMTS. The UMTS uses more battery, but especially if the phone is looking for messages often to other than Outlook. Of course the programs never close, even IE, unless you shut them down manually in settings/system/memory/running programs.

problem with HTC tytn hermes 200

I bought an unlocked HTC TYTN Hermes 200 from a private party. He lives about 40 miles away from where I live and he used it with T-Mobile in California (I live in California also). Before I bought it, I tried it out (while I was in the same city that he lives in) with my T-Mobile SIM and made a phone call and the reception was clear.
Since I got home, I've had problems in 2 places (home and work which are about 5 miles apart) where I have 1 bar of reception and if someone tries calling me, it doesn't even show an incoming call on my phone, it goes straight to voice mail and if I try to call someone, it doesn't ring even once, it just says call ended. When I am at other places, I usually get decent reception (but not always).
I have tried flashing all of the recent radio firmware but nothing has made a difference. I also tried inserting another T-Mobile SIM and had the same problem. My previous phone (unlocked Treo 650) had really weak reception in those same areas but not this bad. The phone is not warrantied, according to HTC. I have made sure all my network settings are correct. It's running Windows Mobile 6. I think it might be a problem where the HTC antenna doesn't pick up a signal as well as weak T-Mobile reception.
Any ideas of what I can do about my problem ?
have you tried upgrading the Radio?
yes I have and I've tried all the different versions from 1.38 to 1.48
Update: I upgraded to 1.50 radio firmware. The phone doesnt show better reception but maybe 1 in 10 times the call will go through.

Unable to make or receive calls

I wonder if anyone can help with a fault on my M3100. So far I've searched this website for answers with no luck. I have Hard Reset the phone, upgraded the Radio, all without any luck.
About 6 days ago my M3100 suddenly stopped being able to make or receive calls. Whenever I try to dial out the call drops out before being established, and if I try to call in to the phone the caller receives a series of beeps.
At first it seems to be a SIM problem, but the Vodaphone SIM is fine in any other phone. If I put my Orange SIM in the phone it just comes up as "No Service".
I'm at the end of the line in what to do and it doesn't seems to make any sense.
Any comments, suggestions, advice or help very much appreciated.
..... Further symptom details:
I can send and receive text message with my Vodaphone SIM installed and access WiFi and GPRS networks. Orange SIM won't connect at all! Both SIMS work fine in a standard phone ! Only clue I can think of here is that the Vodaphone SIM is UMPTS and GSM where the Orange is GSM only. The spare phone I tested them in was GSM only.
Could the GSM part of the M3100 be stuffed ?
I'm stumped for the time being!! It doesn't seem to make any logical sense. Maybe any of you who know the in's and out's of how the device communicates might find some clues in that...
Heeeeelp !
More details..
I've just added a few more details on the symtoms.. maybe the few extra clues might yeild some thoughts from someone !
Have you checked the band selection in Settings > Phone?
Is it possible that the phone could have become blacklisted? How long have you had it? How did you buy it? (This is probably NOT it, since the text still works.)
Have you tried a tweaker to enable HSPDA?
Had the phone for over 12 months so Blacklisted shouldn't be the issue. I've tried all the band selections including Auto but no luck.
Haven't tried the Tweaker... do you have any details on that...
Up until it suddenly stopped working it worked on all networks..
Another possible clue is that I was "Roaming" in France for a month and it was there that I made my last successful call. I have UK SIMS... I have an Australian SIM which I'll try now to see if that makes any difference..
Tried an Australian SIM roaming in the UK ! The service connects on two available networks,Vodaphone and TMobile but not on Orange and O2 (like with the Orange UK SIM). Same fault as the before with the networks it will connect to.
This seems to eliminate the SIM or Network being the fault and isolate the fault to the Device...
probably not the issues, but worth a try?
I live in a very strong 3G + HSPDA ares, but cant make or recieve anycalls tho texts work on T-mobile, i need to have my phone in 2G mode, and calls work fine???
If i leave my house and go a few miles 3G works as it should able to call and recieve etc!
Can't seem to work out how to force the phone onto 2G or 3G ... if anyone can advise I'll give that a try!
I have had very similar problems to this.
Please see my post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=325149
I do think this is some sort of network problem as after I posted the issues in the thread above, I left home and travelled about 6 miles and the signal came back and the phone worked fine.
Today, I have been able to make and receice calls but all of a sudden I got cut off from a call then could not make or receive calls (incoming goes straight to voicemail).
I can however use my Orange SIM without problem and both Vodafone and Orange SIMs work fine in other phones.

You can also go into Settings > Phone > Band.
If the band tab does not appear (to the right of the network tab), then you may need to do a registry tweak.
From the very helpful wiki:
Enable/Disable GSM/UMTS Band Selection
Cingular kindly disables anything useful about the network on the 8525. To enable the Band Selection Tab on your Phone settings page, set the following:
[\HKLM\Software\OEM\PhoneSetting\]
"ShowUMTSBandPage"=dword:00000001
To disable, simply clear the value to 0:
[\HKLM\Software\OEM\PhoneSetting\]
"ShowUMTSBandPage"=dword:00000000

Have travelled outside England again this week and... well the phone works fine roaming on my UK Vodaphone SIM. Seems very ODD.. only thing I can put any logic to is a problem with the GSM part of the phone. It's working here in Stockholm on the 3G network no problem.
Anyone advise how I force the phone to be on GSM and 3G so I can test this theory. The BAND settings under SETTINGS>PHONE don't seem to give you this control over how it connects..
Hey i got the same problem anyone solved it yet!
Hi Sunnyb1
Since my last post I returned to England where the phone was useless. No SIM cards would work, some would not register at all but my Vodaphone SIM seemed to register but as before it would not receive calls, nor could I make calls out.
Now I'm in Australia with an Australian SIM card. NO PROBLEMS AT ALL !!
The phone works just fine !!
It's a mystery indeed...
Without any knowledge of the ins & Outs of how a SIM card / Network / and the phone work together it's impossible for me to arrive at any conclusive logic.
Hopefully someone might stand up to the plate and offer some explanation !
Anyone from HTC out there ??????

I got the phone and it was working perfectly on Orange then i tried unlocking it and ever since it has come up with "NO Service" like you everytime i put a Orange Sim in the phone it does not show up.. but when i put a Vodafone sim it works perfectly i tried reflashing the radio's many times
I unlocked this particular phone 6months before this problem showed up so I don't think the Unlock on it's own is the cause. What's particularly baffling is that a SIM may not work with the phone in one country.. but in another it works fine.
..... another country that is !
Hey Steve i have found out what the problem is after hours of research
I found this of another website
Orange & O2:
If you place an active orange or
O2 sim into a blacklisted handset you
phone will not show any signal strength
at all! If the handset is a Nokia then a
"SIM card registration failed" message
will also be displayed. If your handset is an
Ericsson then an "Invalid Mobile" message
will be displayed. For most other manufacturers
the handset will simply show no signal!
Vodafone & T-Mobile
If you place an active Vodafone or T-Mobile sim into a blacklisted handset, the phone will appear to function perfectly UNTIL you try to make an outgoing call. When you try to call out from the handset you will hear a sequence of beeps and then the call will be dropped!!
........
This means the handset you got is stolen or someone has blacklisted it ... i got mine of EBAY! and reading that i figured that it is stolen
It wont work in the UK but it will work everywhere else in the world
Mmmm... that's interesting Sunnyb1. If my phone is blacklisted then happened in JULY this year which was 8 months after I bought the phone. I bought the phone legit .
Can anyone advise what the "Blacklisting" process is.. I assume its done by using the IMEI number.
Who is the rightful owner of a handset and can any phone be blacklisted by anyone, and possibly by mistake ?
Would unlocking the phone from Orange cause a phone to be blacklisted ??
How can you "Un-blacklist" a phone.
Answered my own question here......
This website seems to have the answers
http://www.unlockme.co.uk/blacklist.html
OK... still on this thread. Can anyone advise how you find out which network in the UK has blocked your an IMEI number. I gather any of the UK networks can block any IMEI and it's not unknown for errors to be made. But only the network that blocks the IMEI can Unblock it.
Thought I'd post this before waiting forever for some call centre dimwit to give me the runaround.
Thanks...

Could the UK Touch HD people on the O2 network please read this and test something?

I'm starting to lose the will to live at the moment as i've got a bit of an issue with using my phone on the o2 network at the moment.
I'd be really grateful, therefore, if the folks with a Touch HD on O2 could do a quick test for me to see if it is just a handset problem or an O2 issue. The full story is outlined below, but you don't have to read it and can skip straight to the test at the end if you want!
My phone worked fine for 2 weeks and hasn't worked since there was a local network outage on o2 on Thursday of last week. After this, the phone will only work when i'm in a 3G enabled area and won't work when i'm in a 2G area (a bit of a pain as i live in a 2G area).
I've been trying to track this issue down.
Here are the tests that i've done so far
An old but still active o2 account works fine in k750 (2g only phone) at home location
Sim card from old O2 account doesn't work in touch HD at home location
New sim card hasn't worked in home location (2G area) since last Thursday
New sim card seems to work elsewhere in 3G locations (although some dropped calls)
If you put phone in GSM only mode when you are in a 3G area you get a signal but can't make or receive any calls
new sim card works in k750 (2G only phone) at home location
Sim card from wife's orange phone works fine at home location (although it is an orange 3g area).
Conclusions
1) Phone is broken
2) O2 local transmitter is broken or no longer will 'speak' to the touch HD since the network outage on Thursday
However, i've come across other people on the O2 network with the same phone (see http://forum.o2.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=15778&start=30) in another part of the country and they are having the same issue, so this has got me thinking of 1 final test before I return my phone.

The test bit starts here

If you are in a 3G area can you switch your phone band to GSM only. After doing so can you still make and receive calls/texts?
If you are in a 2G area can you make and receive calls/texts?
Really appreciate any help you can offer here guys, as this is taking over my life at the moment.
Spud
I've got an Orange Touch HD, unlocked by "Unlock Now", and being used with a 3G o2 contract sim.
Switching to GSM leaves the phone entirely operational, and is generally advised anyway to save battery from band switching in marginal signal areas.
I can't test the 2g only problem as I am swamped by 3g where I live.
I very much expect that the phone WILL work in a 2g area as it has to have the 2g fallback if 3g fails.
V
I live in a 3G area and work in a 2G area and my phone works just fine in both, albeit the slow downloads you would expect in 2G. I'm on O2 with an HD that I bought independently of the contract.
Mine works just fine in non 3G areas on O2 with a recent O2 SIM, can even go from 3G to 2G and back again mid call without any problems. Haven't tried switching 3G off (bit late to be calling anyone tonight) but don't see any reason for it to fail. Have you tried a hard reset?
Thanks guys, really appreciate your input.
I've done all the hard resets and everything and the situation remains the same, the phone will work in 3G areas but not 2G ones, so it will be returned and hopefully the replacement phone will be okay
I live in an area where i'm just on the edge of 3g reception and for the last couple of weeks or so I have been getting calls dropped whenever my phone switches from 3G. I can sometimes get a few seconds of talk time before it drops but if I switch to GSM instead of auto I can't connect at all.
I've had this HD on O2 since December, from mobiles.co.uk, and have only recently started experiencing this problem.
My replacement phone has arrived and now works as it should.
Murph1 - seems like your phone has developed the same fault as mine, so it will need to go back to HTC or get it fixed via CPW
HD TOUCH very dissapointing....any results after repair anyone?
i can tell you that i have purchased a hd touch (around a month ago) and to be honest im not impressed at all….no matter where i am i do not get full signal, i was told that this may be the lack of 3g in my area, so i took it to carphone warehouse, they changed a setting…..and i still have no signal……….i have around 20 photos and 10 songs on the memory card, and already the phone is “lagging” and glitching……….the battery life is pants, it has to be charged every night……also when starting the phone its takes at least 3-4 mins until i can touch a key and the hd touch will recognise it! really is rubbish, so much that ive returned it today for repair, hopefully it will be sorted, but i cant see how they can make the battery life longer, the software faster and the signal better???? my advice is get an iphone (the exact comment i got off of a carphone warehouse employee when i took it in for repair today) but ofcourse apparntly i cant do that as im outside of my 28 day return period….hope this helps,
joe.....oh im on o2 aswell : ( my postcode is s81 (worksop, notts area)
Same problem - PLEASE HELP!?
I have a Touch HD on O2 - through Mobiles.co.uk.
It was working fine originally for 2 weeks - then suddenly I have very low "H" reception in my house (my old phone shows loads of reception with same sim card). If it switches to E or G receptions - even if I have loads of reception, I can't sent a text or call, or receive calls. I've even sat there at work, with 4 or 5 bands on E, and then tried to call myself from my work phone - it goes straight to voicemail.
So it seems that my phone will only work on "H" band/reception. Is this the same problem? I have tried contacting HTC support and hard resets..
Please can someone help?!
Thanks!!!
Does anyone have any idea? Please!! It's doing my head in!
When I first received the phone I found it to be laggy and not very responsive.
I am currently using Dutty's Extreme 2.6 ROM and Radio 1.13.25.24 and the phone runs like a dream.
The device is very fast and responsive. The reception is very good and the GPS fixes in about 10-15 secs. The best thing is that I used the phone for 5 days without charging and it still had 20% charge left at the end (i did not use TomTom in this period).
I am in the UK and I am on the O2 network.
Hope this helps.
The 5 days test came from Dutty's Extreme 2.5 ROM not 2.6.
So how does a radio really work? I think mine is actually faulty though, as it won't connect via E or G bands. Did you have this problem before you upgraded the radio and rom?
nhudgell, your error seems the same as mine. I would be able to make/receive calls in a 3G/H area, but it would go straight to voicemail in a E/G area.
If you are within 28 days of your purchase, return it for a replacement, if not, you'll have to go to a carphonewarehouse to send it off for repair.
P.S. i updated my radio on the phone that had the error and it made no difference at all, so i assume that it was a faulty GSM module in the phone
Sounds like I need to return it then (I'm over 28 days) - so I need to go to Carphone Warehouse? Can I not go straight to HTC and use their warranty?
Another one to get unlucky
Hi all
I have a touch HD which I bought off ebay(oh dear I hear you cry !). I love the phone, but like you had the 2g 3g prob. On 2g I can make calls (if I try and try again and am patient with the long connect time )but cannot receive calls they go straight to answerphone.
I found that with a virgin sim(I had an old one that still works) the prob vanishes and phone works fine in 2g or 3g.
But with any O2 card: mine or a new sim I got(to try and fix this) and my wifes I get the same prob.
Did your phone replacement solve the prob.
I spoke to O2 and they think its a software vs phone software issue, and said that they dont sell/support that handset and I checked its not on their website.
Did the replacement phones solve the issue is all now OK??
Any feed back gratefully received !
Simon
The Story continues....
OK here is the latest.
I spoke to Spud_work & Nhudgell who had this prob and they both confirmed that
A) They had replaced the handset
B) Problem had gone and so far had not come back.
(thanks very much for the prompt response and help guys)
So I called HTC and told them this - I found someone that was interested.
He said that he will look into what the repair people say and then I can update on here.
Just keeping fingers crossed that they CAN fox this as they did for others !
Final Update
Spoke to HTC and they agreed to fix. This required me explaining about the postings on here and what other people had done. I sent the phone back and it was back with me within one week the prob was fixed. I believe that they changed the main-board. They said that they had never heard of this prob, but I pointed them here !
Anyway if anyone else gets this same prob - send the phone back ! That worked for me !
Having said all that I now have a new and even more unusual prob - with the back light - looks like the phone might be going "home" again !

Weird Problem with 3G and H connection on UK O2

Hi,
I have been in touch with HTC and O2 about this. HTC are prepared to take the phone in for service but wonder if anyone here can suggest anything.
My SIM-Free from new HD2 will not connect to the 3G or H network. It works fine on G but the data download is very slow (as you'd expect). It worked fine on 3G or H up until a few weeks ago, not sure when it stopped exactly as only notice the slowness if I'm trying to send a large email attach such as a pic.
I have flashed with the latest stock ROM on UK HTCs website and the problem remains.
O2 have confirmed there are no blocks or other issues with my account and have sent me a replacement SIM but the problem remains.
If I take the O2 SIM and place it into my old Kaiser it connects immediately with a nice H up at the top and a visit to speedtest confirms the fast connection.
If I take a colleagues Orange SIM and place it in my HD2 after the usual SIM card swap wizard does it stuff the HD2 will once again happily connect to 3G/H.
I wondered if somehow my HD2 had had it's IMEI blocked for 3G (or something) at O2 but the helpful tech insists this is not the case.
I am at a loss to explain this as anything other than a phone fault and I suppose I will have to send back to HTC but didn't want to be without it for the 7 working days it will take.
Weird eh!?
