Windows Explorer loops in \Windows - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario General

Hi. The standard File Explorer program on my unit has suddenly begun "spinning" continuously in the \Windows directory. If I kill the registry entry that holds the current dirctory, it works normally until I enter \Windows again. \Windows is accessible normally through Total Commander or ActiveSync.
Apparently something in the directory is upsetting Explorer. Any ideas on a way to fix this (I don't want to hard reset just to fix this)?
Additional info -- it appears that after quite a few minutes Explorer may finish with \Windows and display a result for an instant, but immediately exits.
Thanks.

Must be a bug with File Explorer. Could you dump a full directory list of your \Windows or try to remove your programs one-by-one, checking back every time after an uninstall to see whether the bug is still present? That'd be great for the entire PPC community (that is, finding the offending program)

This is the approach I've been taking. It's a bit tedious since whenever File Explorer gets into spinning mode in \Windows I have to soft boot to get out.
I've removed the last several programs that were installed. One of them itself caused the "infinite" spinning during the deinstallation process -- others deinstalled OK.
I've also removed some of the more recently created files in \Windows that I knew were safe to delete.
So far no change to File Explorer's behavior. It works fine except in \Windows. Total Commander still has no problems at all in \Windows, etc.
I could post the directory listing for \Windows, but it's rather long.

Just go on deinstalling - and it t doesn't work, try reinstalling everything after a hard reset
Just checked this on my Wizard (AKU3.2 bepe/KTamas ROM): FE works OK in \Windows

File Explorer stuck in windows folder

Hi folks,
I currently have a problem with file explorer. I opened the windows folder and now I am stuck with the time icon, I wait...and I wait... and nothing happens it freezes the phone. After a soft reset and then going back into file explorer it goes back to the folder I last looked at which is the windows folder and freezes again.. so basically I can't use file explorer anymore? Any suggestions?
Steve
Is it locking up? or does it just need more time to load and display all the contents of \windows. Can you minimize file explorer by pressing the hang up key and work on something else, then go back later to file explorer. Are you able to change directories now?
Are you using a shortcut to launch file explorer
I always use Total commander for file management and \windows does take a while to load. It too tries to open the last used directory but if the folder is not available, eg network share, it defaults to the root directory after a warning. Not the answer to your problem, I know, but Total Commander is free and it is much better featured than the standard file explorer.

Try this on a Registry Editor:
HKLM - Software - Microsoft - File Explorer - LastLocation - 0 (zero)
Soft Reset then try to launch File Explorer again.

Thanks folks, got it working. I needed to change the registery values. The phone was freezing up and even after 10 minutes was still not showing the contents of the windows folder.
Da_mayhem just fyi I edited the localpath folder from '/windows' to '/' this seemed to solve the problem. The lastlocation value was already set to 0 for some reason?
Thanks for your help guys...

Nice to know it helped you somehow he he he
I seem to have the same Problem with my HTC Touch (non-branded, German Version). However I do not have the aforementioned registry values. There is no "file explorer" unter HKLM - Software - Microsoft.
Any Ideas on how to get my file explorer running again?
In the meantime I'm using TotalCommander, however TC doesn't support sending files via Bluetooth, or at least not that I know of. I can only send via Infrared, or am I missing something?
What is REGISTRY EDITOR? Please help me that! I m having the same problem on my XDA ORBIT ii

I tried this, but didn't have a "File Explorer" entry. So I created one and the LastLocation value as noted, but it still opens in the Windows folder and locks up. Any clues?

perhaps because that is usualy in HKCU not HKLM.

I know this is an old post...but after extensive searching and frustration...S.V.I fixed my issue. I just wanted to say thanks to S.V.I
I couldn't find file explorer and it was freezing...like S.V.I pointed out- it is HKCU and not HKLM.
I had done 2 hard resets...and removing "windows" from the path fixed it.
Thanks to all that posted solutions here on this great site!
Update:
Spoke to soon...I can't enter my Windows folder at all using file explorer- I could earlier. I can enter anywhere else...just not my Window folder...I can with Resco explorer. I have to apply S.V.I suggestion to stop it from freezing...but magically-"\windows" keeps re-appearing in my registry.
Update:
Found another solution that actually worked for me!
open File Explorer
Click on Menu>Sort> change it to Name
I think i know the solution
i too have experienced the same problem like this. but then this is what i do. and it's surprisingly works.
1) soft reset your phone
2) click on file explorer again
3) the loading symbol will always appear, but for now just let it be.
4) close the file explorer by tapping 'hang up' key/button. this will supposedly bring you back to home screen
5) wait for half an hour or longer
6) open file explorer
7) the windows folder loaded successfully
Typos
Ayobi's solution worked.
I have a HTC Diamond 2 WM6.5. File explorer froze as I sorted the files in the Windows folder. Exactly followed Ayobi's suggestion. Got out of the mess.
I won't visit Windows folder again!!!
Thanks Ayobi and others for their suggestions.
Jay.

This definitely worked - on a related note you can go into Registry Editor (HKCU - Software - Microsoft - File Explorer) and change the SortOrder value to anything but 2 (apparently 2 is for Type). Soft reset and reload the program, and it should load a lot faster.

I had same problem, because I tried to sort Windows folder by file Type. Oops.
I know it's an old post, but here's my two cents (because this thread guided me to a slightly modified resolution.)
My resolution on Tilt2 TP2 WinMo 6.5 was found here:
HKCU - Software - Microsoft - File Explorer - LastLocation - 0 (zero)
HKCU - Software - Microsoft - File Explorer - LastPath - \ (slash)
HKCU - Software - Microsoft - File Explorer - SortOrder - 1
That did the trick for me. Was able to open File Explorer. Strangely, it took me to the Windows folder again; but didn't hang this time. Maybe because I skipped soft reset (so maybe registry change may not have taken effect entirely?)

Replace WM alarm in Mobile Shell

I have searched and searched for a way to do this, and I finally figured out a
workaround.
Thanks go out to Koush and AVlev. They deserve all of the credit for developing the apps.
First I downloaded and installed Klaxon:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=412669
I then moved the entire contents of \Program Files\Klaxon into the \windows folder. I copied Klaxon.exe to my pc desktop via activesync and renamed it to Clock.exe (explained later)
I changed the two install folders at HKLM\Software\Apps\Koushik Dutta Klaxon
from \Program Files\Klaxon to \Windows
I downloaded and installed this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=438406
As explained in the thread above, this changes the Clock.exe file in the Windows folder to Clock_sys.exe and replaces it with its own Clock.exe. Trick is that the Clock.exe can now be overwritten. I tried several different programs to overwrite this file (i.e. Total Commander) and couldn't.
AFTER INSTALLING THE ABOVE do not click on the clock or try to open it. Once it is opened it becomes a sys file agin and you won't be able to do squat with it (or atleast I couldn't on my ROM).
I then dragged the renamed Clock.exe file from my desktop into the \Windows folder via activesync, and soft reset.
Now when I click on the clock/alarms on the Now screen it brings up Klaxon.
Note: I tried to do this with G-Alarm and it wouldn't work. Clicking the clock in the now screen would bring G-Alarm up, and I could set alarms and change settings, but when an alarm would try to initiate the program would crash.
If someone who knows what they're doing could figure that out it'd be much appreciated.
EDIT: note#2- The standard WM clock settings become accessible from the programs menu after installing the second program
nice it works! ... but isn`t there an easy version?! because i can`t deinstall IPC clock!

HELP with FingerSuite

I am currently using FingerSuite on my HTC Touch. There are two parts to the suite, one is for "menus" and the other for "pop-ups". To prevent running the program each time I had to soft reset my phone I copied the .exe file for the 'MsgBox' program (which provides a more finger friendly interface for errors that give pop-ups) and placed this in \Windows\StartUp. However, by placing the .exe file in the 'StartUp' folder the program doesn't seem to run. When a pop-up should appear (eg. for confirmation of deleting a file; Yes or No) the screen simply freezes. This, I understand, is because I should have placed the .lnk file in the 'StartUp' folder instead as it requires other files in the same folder which are missing in 'StartUp'. Unfortunately I am unaware of a way to disable FingerSuite once it is running and because of this I am unable to delete the file I have placed in the StartUp folder.
Sorry for the poor description of my problem.
Is there any way in which I can remove this file I have placed in the 'StartUp' folder? I don't want to have to hard reset my device but if there is no other way then I suppose I will have to.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks, Alex
Nevermind, I managed to delete the file once I ran my device in Safe Mode.

file explorer windows freezing

Made the mistake of choosing 'view all' to delete some album art...unfortunately,.I went to device->windows and now anytime I choosebfile explorer, it takes 5 minutes for file explorer to reset itself. Have soft resetted, but file explorer fails to open. What can I do to go back to my documents or any other screen that will allow me to remove the 'view all' option?

Unfortunately the /windows folder is rather large and it takes a while to open. Most file explorers are set to open on last page you used before it was closed, i.e. in your case /windows. Best thing you could do would be to open your file explorer and let /windows open fully and then go back to My Device before chaning settings. Even with 'view all' turned off, the /windows file will still take a while to open
Thank you close-i-nator
That was 30 minutes of my precious life that I will never get back...
man, it never took this long. Someone should come up with some .cab that reset file explorer back to 'My Device'...all good for now, just dreading to check and see if the wait time has improved
I had the same problem. I ran a registry editor and changed the folder that File Explorer started in - solved it.

Slow File Explorer

Hi All,
Last week i made a networkconnection to a NAS in my local network via Wifi.
It all worked fine on my HD2.
but now when i open the File Explorer it is really slow. (even Total Commander is slow)
WiFi is turned off.
Looks like there is some cache left on the phone or something.. when the explorer is open i get a list of the directories on the device, but when i scroll the interface is hanging for a while. this will repeat continuesly.
is there a way to clean up some old stuff?
i did do a search in the registry via SKTools Registry Explorer to search for any left items about the networkdrive, but could not find something.
Does anyone reconize this issue and do have a fix for it?
It drives me crazy when i could not get into the file explorer anymore.
its more likely that your file man is trying to remap the networkmap and failing.
not sure how you go about sorting it, i only ever use resco, but try deleting the share if its still showing in your network list on the phone.
maybe it will help..
in the file explorer try to change the "sorting by" files to name
when i had "sorting by" type the explorer was very slow
Update:
I experienced that when i open the file explorer and browsing on root the ' My Device' is just slow and hangs continuesly, when i browse to various directories or storagecard it is working fine.
so should be an old reference to the networkmapping.
But don't know how to delete, because is not visible in the file explorer
checked registrypath: HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ File Explorer \
to see if there was a MRU pointed to the networkpath but nothing interesting to see
Solved !!
I used SKTools to search for broken links (search and remove or repair broken links).
There was a file called: \config.lnk which pointed to the path of the networkmapping.
does someone know how the config-file works?
fixed.
