XDA GPRS : Sharing with Laptop via IR or CABLE?

Ok. Please don't tell me to search. I have. If you have found the magic cure, then can you possible and nicely show me there this thread is?
PROBLEM:
No internet access for Laptop on 1.5 hour train trip.
However, TMOBILE XDA phone has good GPRS signal.
REQUIREMENT:
Share GPRS internet connection coming through XDA with laptop.

I understand boot mode (wallaby) where it can be used as traditional cellular modem. That's limited to speed problems, and I don't wish to pursue that.

With wm2003 4.00.33 German there is the "Wireless Modem" application built in which works with my MDA. I don't know if that application also works with an english ROM. Maybe there is a ROM-Update out there and the wireless modem is included.

New to my ENG 4.05.00 is GPRS AUTHENTICATION in the connections/networking seciton, but nothing else.

I know that the wireless modem is NOT included with your 4.00.05 ROM. It was included in the 3.17.03 ENG ROM from O2.
Maybe you give a try to the wmodem.exe i extracted from my german ROM.....

One question, however. From reading other threads (I finally found some), I noticed that the laptop should be running XP.
I guess the question really is, what are the step-by-step instructions to complete the configuration and get the laptop on the internet. I would think that they were:
(1) Getting the phone to have WMODEM [complete]
(2) Powering the phone up, and running WMODEM app [complete]
(3) Powering up the laptop, and then discovering a device [unknown]
(4) Creating a new DUN (dial up networking) connection on the laptop and using the mystery modem device just discovered [unknown]
(5) Configuring SOME NUMBER to dial as the connection parameters [unknown]
(6) Connecting
I would think that the phone would accept the incoming 'request' for it to act as a wireless modem, and initiate a gprs connection, and then do some sort of NAT.
Does ANYONE have ANY more information on how this might work?
Is XP required?

GPRS Settings
You need a Serial Cable or an Irda COM Port available. XP is not required. I do Irda on W2k (it also works with XP)

The important thing is to install a Standard Modem over some COM port and use Advanced Settings for your AccessPoint i.e
AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","web.one.at","",0,0
You then dial "*99#" (without the quotes)

Where do we stand on the best solutions?
I have the same problem except I am also interested in getting the XDA to act as a wireless modem for circuit-switched data calls (7Kbps pipe).
I first saw the most pertinent information at http://www.xda-developers.com/modem/ but the page is labeled "superseded". As I understand, as soon as we get ROM 3.16.43 or above, all the "intrusive" trick posted on the page originally is obsolete.
My first question is about the "intrusive" trick there. It sure looks like the trick will get the XDA to act as a wireless modem for your laptop to make circuit-switched data calls (consuming minutes, 7Kbps only). Does it get the laptop to make GPRS connection (45Kbps) as well, assuming I subscribe to T-Mobile's data plan ($20/mo, unlimited data under promotion)?
My second question is, once we get a ROM version that gives a "wireless modem" program, can I make both types of data calls? Sounds like yes for the answer.
If so, great. Let's assume so. T-Mobile US is at ROM 3.14.40 ENG right now. In a matter of a month or two, they are going to post the upgrade for Windows Pocket PC 2003. A tier 2 tech guy told me that it will probably come with a ROM upgrade. I feel that the chances are high that that ROM version provides this "wireless modem" program. If so, isn't it true that the upgrade basically converts our XDA's into a Sierra Wireless AirCard 750, and then some? Or I am off track somewhere?
The tech support told me that the AirCard 750 approach calls for a SIM card for the air card. You would have to either open a new line for a new SIM card, quite costly, or eject the SIM card from your PPC and place it into the air card each time you use it, quite a hassle. Hardware capability wise, XDA is just an AirCard 750, and then some. It's rediculous that it was not made as such to begin with. Maybe it was just a matter of development phases to roll out functionalities gradually and we are getting there?

I didn't try it yet, it sounds quite interesting for multiple purposes.

Browsing LAN from PPC

Is it possible to browse my LAN from my XDAII using only my USB cradle? I'm using Resco Explorer. I tried this:
1. Select My Network root directory
2. Selected Map Drive... from the Advanced Toolbar
... to no avail.

Open up internet explorer. Put in the address bar the following \\"computer name or IP of computer" then click on the little go button and waa laa it will work. The go button doesn't say go, but in essence it is the same it is to the right of the address bar.

As far as I was aware it's not possible to browse network files from an XDA2 unless you use an SDIO wi-fi card, and sure enough I can't get Mikee's suggestion to work. If I type into IE's address bar '\\192.168.1.100' and click Go, that gets replaced with 'file//\\192.168.1.100\' (almost like it's trying to connect for me) but then immediately I get a 'Network path cannot be found' error.
Pity, cos it'd be great to be able to do this. Perhaps I'm doing something wrong, Mikee?

You can partially blame Microsoft for this with their "My network card connects to {work} or {the internet}..." paradigm.
It's one of the most irritating things about the Windows Mobile OS.
Let's suppose you have a Wireless Card or (in my XDAIIi's case) internal Wireless turned on. By default, WinMob2003(&SE) decides arbitarily that your network card connects to the Internet.
This is fine if you are using a Wireless AP hooked up to ADSL at home for your Home LAN as it will just connect via your AP and go straight through to the Internet. However, guess what you have to do to be able to connect to any local machines on your LAN? You guessed it, you have to go into the advanced connection setting and change the "My network card connects to..." to "Work"!! You will then be able to map a drive either using Resco Explorer or even the inbuilt explorer, of any machine that your PPC can "see". Don't forget that permissions etc will need to be setup first though so that you can login to said machine.
That's fine, however, guess what you WON'T be able to do while you have that setting at "Work"? You guessed it, you WON'T be able to connect to the Internet!
I'm afraid it's either one OR the other and NOT both together.

strange , im using the XDA2s and my wifi settings are set to see internet , but in file explore or rosco file explorer they both see my lan fine in file exlore all i doo is click on the netfolder ickon at the bottom and then enter \\ (then the computer name) eg \\bedroompc this works both for my work network and home

Firstly, my apologies for the double post above. I only pushed the submit button once, honest!
I was actually describing the "standard" way that all of O2's XDA's get setup when they are first turned on from new and that means that usually, under "Connections", "Select Networks" then "Network Management", you will normally see "My ISP" in the top box for progs that automatically connect to the Internet and "My Work Network" in the lower box for progs that automatically connect to a private network and this is where the problem lays.
In hindsight, I wasn't particularly helpful to Tetragrammaton since I didn't provide the actual solution he was looking for simply because I got too wrapped up in bashing the PPC's network client (or lack of a full one anyway...)
The solution is of course to simply make the bottom box equal to the top box (i.e. "My ISP") and immediately this will change the behaviour to that as you so correctly described (being able to connect to the Internet and to a Local LAN machine simultaneously) and will obviate the need to swap the destination of the Network Card settings themselves (which only gives one way connectivity with Wireless anyway).
I'm guessing that your machine is set this way Henny? Which of course will work as you describe.
The only caveat to doing this is that you disable the O2 WAP settings (which are normally configured under the "My Work Network" part) but whether this is a great loss is a moot point. In any case, the lower box in "Network Management" can always be switched back temporarily should you need the WAP settings back.
I hope this has now helped Tetragrammaton to get up and running...

I should hastely add that my offered solution in the last post still won't allow you to browse LAN machines while connected in the cradle (I've just tried it) so if anyone knows a way to do this, I would be interested...

I think that's what tetragrammaton was asking in the original post. In that case I'm confused . Sorry. If it doesn't work in the cradle, but you're not talking about doing it through a wi-fi connection, what does your solution actually do? Apologies if I'm being a bit thick here - I'm ill with the 'flu.
I'm nervous about starting to mess about with the connections settings on my XDA2 just so that I can browse files on the network - every time I do this I end up screwing them up. I don't understand them at all and usually a hard reset with the auto-config is the only way to get it all working again. :roll:

I'll do a synopsis of this thread so far this evening. Bit tied up at work at the moment. Hope that's ok...

This has been covered many many times. It is impossible as currently set up. The best way to achieve this is to buy Pocket LAN, it works perfectly

I've had a quick look at that but that would be for just Wireless LAN connectivity, right? ...and as has already been pointed out to me (correctly), the original question was not about wireless.

NO!!!! This works through active sync with the xda in the cradle, worked on xda2 and 2i for me. Actually it is a bit of a waste of money as i never use it, though it seemed agreat idea at the time.

I've googled "Pocket LAN" and came up with a bunch of hits though none of them seem to be the right hit. If Pocket LAN seems to do the trick of accessing a network via the USB cradle only, could you post the link to Pocket LAN? Thanks!

Contrary to what Barney found, it didn't work at all for my XDAIIi in the cradle. The usual "network path not found" was all it could muster...
Even wirelessly I found it cumbersome and a bit iffy at connecting to machines at times. It does no more than Resco Explorers built-in network stuff. It also seeks to start messing with the device name etc and generally "muscle-in" and take over... Resco Exp does it without fuss, quietly and efficiently. More importantly, it works everytime but I'm afraid even it can't manage to connect to LAN machines through the cradle and AS.

Try a program called pdanet available from www.junefabrics.com. I had the same issue last week and used pdanet to connect my PC to the internet via my GPRS T-Mobile account. The program worked well for me.

Look in programs on your MDA and you will see a program called ModemLink, it allows you to use your MDA as an Edge/GPRS modem. It's how I connect to the internet at home on my desktop. Hook up to the USB cable run Modem Link hit activate and follow the directions. If you look on Your CD that came with the phone in the OEM folder you'll find directions and a driver to use.

I was recently given a new laptop and had to reconfigure all my connections. Like you I have TM GPRS and while slow, it was still better than the alternatives. I tried & tried to get the usb modem to work but couldn't so in a last ditch effort I started playing around with the bluetooth modem and eureka, it works. I actually think it works better than usb, no cable, you dont have to mess with modemlink, it's stable, I'm using it right now.
My laptop is a dell xps which uses Toshiba's bluetooth stack. I initially tried configuring it with the auto configure wizard and it wouldn't recognize the wizard's modem. Instead use the manual process and in the Toshiba version there is a switch between modem and file transfer, it defaults to file transfer in the wizard, setting the switch to modem it instantly connected and logged into the gprs net (*99#, no password or logon info needed).
I also recently updated the wizard with the new tmobile rom which I believe eliminates modemlink because when I said you dont mess with it, it's because it's not there or at least I couldn't find it. Anyone else see this?

I figured this out yesterday using the usb cradle (to see if it would work).
The key is in the order that you do things.
Go to the wiki site (look at the top of the page - left) and follow the really simple instructions. THey work perfectly.

How to Setup Laptop to Use 3G Internet from My Cingular 8525?

Okay, I've searched for several hours so I don't act like a true newbie and ask a dumb question that's been asked a hundred times, but I can't find anything definite on this, so here goes.
I have a new Cingular 8525 and have Cingular's PDA Connect Unlimited data plan. I am in a 3G area. I have an out of the box phone with Windows Mobile 5 with no ROM updates or hacks on it.
I would like to take my laptop in the car and hook my phone to it and have my laptop use the 3G connection that my phone is providing. I know you can setup a modem connection, and I've done that, but it only connects at 115k, which is the fastest setting the modem driver and bluetooth dongle have listed. I would like to be surfing on my laptop at the 3G speeds.
I know there are implications where Cingular may or may not charge me, because I am supposed to possibly have something called the Laptop Connect plan, but lets assume that's not an issue.
Also, whichever way is easiest, I can either use my USB cord to tether my phone and laptop together or use my Bluetooth on my laptop and connect that way.
Anyone have the steps on how to make this work?

I have almost the same situation: a Tom Tom GO 720 device that will talk to the 8525's Handsfree service via Blue Tooth, but says that the phone is not advertising the DUN service.

Got it working
I did two things to make it work.
First, I got Internet Sharing working by using the cabinet called UPRREY-ICS[1].cab that you can find on this forum site. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=1564979#24. This will install a link to the Internet Sharing application and show it under Programs.
That made my laptop able to use the GPRS connection. This uses the Bluetooth PAN to tether the laptop and the phone. (but be careful - your plan might not allow large data transfers).
Second, I found two files, also on this forum site, called WM6_DUN.zip (or separately as BT_DUN.cab) and MODEMLINK.zip.

MODEMLINK.zip has a .rgu file in it that I didn't have to mess with .. I just copied the other files to the windows directory and restarted.
Now my TomTom GO 710 finds the handsfree connection, the phonebook/object connection, and the DUN service so it can get on the internet when it needs to.

I have a tomtom gps 720 that I am trying to conntect to a HTC touch diamond, downloaded the software and have placed it into my windows directory etc.. which seems to have helped as it now shows on my tomtom that my phone supports wireless data transfers, the problem I am having now is when putting the setting in the tomtom for the wireless settings my mobile of phone does not appear so I am getting up to 65% through setting it up before I run into a wall....
any further ideas?

I would suggest using the data cable method without bluetooth headaches. Diamond has a ver poor battery, so when ised with USB cable it can stay alive but ultimately your laptop battery is drained
Diamond should have built-in internet connection sharing option. Does the prompt that appears when connecting to PC have that? If not try the HTCtoUSB PopUp cabs taken from Raphel.

i really only think it will work the other way around. if you have 3g using the x1 as a bluetooth modem so you can get internet on your pc. unless you have a highspeed internet connection on your pc that isn't already wireless, in which case you can buy a usb wifi adapter for pretty cheap. i dunno if this was any help...

Actually there is a way.....
If you establish an bluetooth active-sync connection.
You should be able to surf the net via the bluetooth connection...
But it is still more efficient to go by wi-fi....

I know that with Palm OS PDA we used Mocha PPP, perhaps you can give it a try.
Else perhaps an adhoc connection if you want to try Wifi.

Try initial the BT detection from yr PC (or the other way as I don't remember.). The "serial port" will be replaced w/ ActiceSync eventually.

It does work but it depends on your contract
The carrier company can tell if you are browsing through your phone or using internet sharing. I am on O2 and it does not have this, but if I put my T-Mobile sim card in, it works fine. PC's use higher bandwidth and this costs the mobile companies.
If you want to use it, I recommend using the USB lead as bluetooth and 3G connection will abuse your battery.
To use, press start, programs internet sharing. You can only use it if you have activesync on your pc, USB mode is activesync and your mobile provider lets you.

This method may not work anymore since PAN client is being removed in recent WM release. You may need to try this to get PAN client working. I posted my working experience over there w/ my Att tilt. But this method require a lot more effort to get it working compare to activesync.

i thought the bluetooth internet sharing only works one way...?

if you go to internet sharing on the phone, you choose bluetooth pan and then a connection that your phone uses to connect to the internet. that's not what he wants. someone correct me if i'm wrong and there's another way to do this bc i'm really not sure.
