Creating a PPC emulator image identical to your PPC - Windows Mobile Development and Hacking General

In order to be able to have a look at some software, I would like to create a PPC emulator image identical with all the application that I currently have on my PocketPC.
How do you do that ?
I have tried with Spb Backup and Sprite Backup, the backup of my "real" PocketPC is always successful but when I try to want to restore the image on the PocketPC emulator this always give me the same error with Spb Backup and Sprite Backup archives:
"
The file 'Backup_20061010' cannot be opened. Either it is not signed with a trusted certificate, or one of its components cannot be found. You might need to reinstall or restore this file.
"

Have you already managed to make an image of your real PocketPC to have it on the PocketPC emulator ?
That would be nice to test new programs before messing up your real PocketPC.

yeah i would be intersted in that too dont wanna go screwing up my actual PPC lol

How to make Sprite Backup 3 work with XDA2??

can someone please help me to get sprite back up v3 to work on my xda2. my aim is to backup my device to my PC. it either freezez my xda2 or hard resets it!!!
thanks a lot
Only after I bought Sprite 3.0 I found out it doesn't work properly. In my case, V3.0 erased my SMS after a restore! Solution? According to Sprite SOftware, they working on it. In the meantime, this is what I did:
For the first Backup
- Make an executable (.exe) backup file and save it to Storage (permanent storage on your XDAII). It will be a slightly bigger file
- BEFORE you run the back up (UNselect e-mail option and click on the (+) sign next to System Data, then again on (+) File System and again on (+) Prgogram Files.
- UNselect Arcsoft box
- Then run the backup. You need to do the executable file only once
For daily backups, save them to a storage card.
- BEFORE you run the back up (UNselect e-mail opetion and click on the (+) sign next to System Data, then again on (+) File System and again on (+) Program Files.
- UNselect Arcsoft box
- Then run the backup.
To Restore
- Run the executable backup file first
- Then do a soft reset
- Run Sprite and restore form your last daily backup file
It anly sound akward, but it worked for me!
PS: You will loose your e-mail account settings and all its folders' contents. But I found that I could live with this. It's better than having to reinstall all software to your XDAII again!
..like walking on thin ice!
hey michael..thanks for the details.. but sprite backup seems to hate xda2..
is there a way to back up to pc with this workaround? can i use the same approach but pc as the destination?
any news when sprite will release the new version?
anyone knows of another backup sw that backs up xda2 to PC?
thanks
Hawk
I hate to be arguementative - but I am using Sprite Pocket Backup v.3 with my imate and it is working perfectly. It even restores my SMS!
Are you sure you are not using ver. 2.X which did have the SMS restore problem?
I've tried with my xdaII , the sms inbox was restored OK, but I have some problem after the backup restored. I never received SMS anymore.
don't know why....
so I never used it again.
i'm using imate with rom 1.72 and sprite backup v3
Hey Brian
Can u please give details about yr device, e.g rom etc. and installed applications.. i never got to to work on the imate. please give some details on if u were able to backup to pc?
anybody know of any program that backs up imate to pc?
thanks
Hawk
On my MDA2 SpriteBackup crashes! (automatic backup timed at 23:55 everyday) Looks like some file is in use and Sprite is not able to backitup and the whole backup process is stopped. So on my MDA2 backup has NEVER finished!
I'm using backup in ActiveSync - I have it set to automatic mode - everytime I put my MDA2 into the cradle, it synchronizes with outlook and then does FULL BACKUP.
And I'm sure this kind of backup works well - I restored my MDA many times after hardreset from ActiveSync's backup and everything was always OK.
hawk -
Your second question first - Of course you know that ActiveSync can backup your PPC to your PC (Tools -> Backup/Restore). Also, Sprite Backup ver.3 can backup to your PC as well - it can install a tool in your system tray to run the Sprite Backup PC Service.
I had version 2.X of Sprite Backup and experienced the SMS service failing to receive messages after a restore. With ver. 3.0.0 I have actually restored my imate after an unintentional HR and SMS worked perfectly thereafter.
Now, for my configuration:
imate with ROM Ver. 1.72.00WWE
1GB SD card
VITO Voice Dialer
PHM Registry Editor
MS PocketStreets
m-possible Backgammon
HP Mobile Printing
Zendrui PocketZenPhone
Syntact GameBox
Sprite Software Sprite Backup
Sprite Software Space Detective
Sprite Software PocketMon
Spb Pocket Plus
Mobimate WorldMate Pro
MS Cubicle Chaos
Laridian Pocket Bible (with 10 Bible translations)
Laridian Daily Reader
Illium Software eWallet
Total Commander
Adobe Acrobat Reader 1.0
A.Khogo tAgenda
SSnap
IDiff
I also have the drivers for the Stowaway keyboard installed.
It's pretty well loaded!

What version? I'm using spritet 3 v1517 without issue. Email and SMS restore correctly. The only conflict I've found is using GPRS monitor.
I had the same problem with the earlier versions of Sprite Backup too. After restoration, my XDA will have a complete blackout on SMSs. So i have decided not to install it again.
BRosenow, is your Vito Voice Dialer the PE version? I can't seem to get the non-PE version to work tho.

Likewise, I have no problems on my Xda II - mine does an automatic, self extracting backup every morning at 08:45 to my storage card. They always come back completely, sweet as...

Yes, it is Voice Dialer PE v3.0.
Sprite Backup
I'm using it with my XDA II and no problem. I restores everything as it was. Using Sprite Backup V3.0.0 build 1517.
I don't backup to my PC but to a SD card.
Regards,
Mark
whats the reason to backup to a pc using something like Sprite
over just using activesync's pc backup restore option ?
i understand the sd card backup but not why people use it on pc's
If I'm not wrong ActiveSync backup from PC gives problems with restore after a ROM upgrade.
Maybe that's the reason. I agree with you. It has no additional value.
Mark
I use Sprite to backup my imate to my laptop from time-to-time, just in case something were to happen to my SD backup (loose the SD card, backup files become corrupted, etc.). Considering the little time and storage space it takes, what's the harm in having a little insurance?
And I use the Sprite backup to PC because it takes about 2 min. for a full backup . . . can ActiveSync do that?
nah
with ms you get what you pay for since activesync is free is slow can be
a full backup prob take about 15->30min
i prefer to use the same program 1. to backup to sd card & pc for compatiblity reasons in order to exchange files if needed, 2. sprite does exe files 3. activesync may not restore to a newer rom properly.
the funny thing is some people are using sprite with no problem, others like me are just going thru hell to make it work.
on sprite's support they mention something about stopping some processes in windows\startup\
tried that too, didn't work.
can anyone diagnose the problem with the inconsistency of the results from one person to the other and definite solution?
Hawk
Maybe the ROM version that differs! Sprite Backup works for me fine. See my ROM version below with my signature.
My startup folder contains:
AFlashman, BTTrayCE, CFlashMan, CheckAutorun, ChgDFLnk, IA_Caller_ID, MMREG, NFlashMan, poutlook, stk, Symantec Antivirus, TFlashMan

Well . . . you need to be VERY selective of which files you restore after a ROM upgrade anyway. You cannot do a full restore (from a full backup) after a ROM upgrade, because .exe and .dll files (and others) will be restored, replacing the newer versions. This leaves the device in a state that is somewhere between the two ROM versions and will cause all sorts of problems.
You should only restore documents, email and personal databases - not system data.

A good Full Backup Software (Data+Configuration+Install)

I am looking for a good backup software to save all the files and configuration between Hard Resets or ROM Upgrades, for Windows Mobile 5, thanks
I've seen several people on here recommend Sunnysoft Backup Manager. I've just now downloaded the trial, so I haven't had a cance to try it yet, but it does look to be very configurable. Since there's a free trial (14 days) give it a shot and see if it fits your needs.

I have tested the Sunnysoft Backup Manager. It does backup and restore my Wizard, but only for files and programs. All my PIM data are lost. :?
BTW, The "Data Backup" program seems to work in the Dell x51v WM5.0 machine. Could anyone extract it from x51v and try if it work in HTC Universal or Wizard? :?:

if you rename the file pim.vol (located in the root directory) to something like pim.vol.old and then do a soft reset and then start the restore, your pim data will be restored too.
Wolfgang
Yeah. Your idea works! It works even I just rename the pim.vol and start restore without soft reset.
Thanks a lot.

Sorry,
but why should the software backup my PIM-data ?
Just do a sync .. and they are there.
- Superbowl
Superbowl,
I don't trust outlook and otoh I'm on the road a lot of times without any chance to sync my data. So a local backup/copy is very helpful.
I had already some hardresets (not with the MDA Pro, but with other devices) without knowing where they came from and I was really happy to be able to restore my device in the hotel.
Wolfgang
but the "other devices" were doing a hard reset everytime u were running out of batteries, that s why it was usefull to have the contacts saved too.
Now this does not apply anymore.
I would need to restore my Data only after Rom upgrades, which i would prefer doing it on my home computer.(which has the contacts synchronized in outlook).
backup software
I am using sprite backup for a long time and it is amazing. I believe it is far better than the sunnysoft. At least 4-5 times faster.
It is reliable and restoring the state % 100. Morover scheduled or battery level dependant backups are available, too.
From Sprite Backup Website :
http://www.spritesoftware.com/en/personal/products/windows_mobile/pocket_pc.htm
"Windows Mobile 2005 devices cannot use Sprite Backup. We will be releasing a new version that will be compatible with these devices in the near future. Please keep visiting this site for updates. "
I missed WM 2005 part !!!

Creating an image of my system state

I have two universals and would like to clone the second one with the first one. Kind of like ghost that creates an identical image.
I don't want to go through the tedious process of having to install everything from scratch.
Also, using a backup program is a bad option, they just restore files/registry and stuff. They don't restore the system state (i.e. if file deletions are to be made they won't do it, they will just restore files not on destination machine or replace existing with newer version)
but they will not like delete stuff that I don't want. For example I have a special arrangment of program groups. Using a backup program and then restoring it will leave the initial windows program groups and stuff, and would just append to it my new groups rather then delete all groups.
I tried XDA_Tools but it's probably only working with old models because it didn't work with my universal, couldn't read or write any image.
Anyone's got a solution I could use for cloning a device state to another one ?
I've used spb backup for this, and dont really understand the problem you have with backup programs.

Backup programs do not restore to system state and are far from giving an identical replicated, like you have ghost on PC.
For example, you backup your PPC deleting many rubbish and your program groups look all different, you got rid of many redundant jpg files and rearranged your program groups the way you like it.
Now, you take this backup and restore it on a nother brand new machine, what you will get is a setup of what that machine looks brand new and IN ADDITION you will get also all the program groups and stuff that were restored from the backup. So you end up with much garbage that exists after a hard reset. An image of a machine is byte wise, not file wise and so it gives an identical copy of the machine, that why Norton Ghost was invented for the PC as well as many other programs.
I am looking for such a solution that would allow me to deploy the SAME system on more than one universal.
SPB Backup does exactly what you are looking for on my Exec.
If I hard reset and restore a FULL backup made with SPB (about 11Mb usually),my Exec is identical to before the reset.
Even stuff that I have deleted from the Rom is gone.
I would definately give it a try.

Thanks, I'll try that.
Use SKTOols 3.0, Spb Backup 1.5 or Sprite Backup 5.1. Read / search my blog on all thes ethree programs - I've elaborated on and compared them all.

Spb Backup Problem

HI,
I HAD SPB BACKUP INSTALLED ON MY BA BUT THE SCHEDULED BACKUP FUNCTION SEEMS TO NOT WORK PERFECTLY.
every time i set a scheduled backup at a certain time it starts the device, perform all the necessary actions (the time to do that is equal to the period it lasts if made manually, it creates the file of back up but.....after it starts up the device automatically, the following written appears:
"unable to locate the shortcut or to open the file"
After i tried to open the .exe backup file and it says:"the file is corrupted"
The lenght of this file is only 450 kb while the one i can create manually is 15 mb.
I discovered that the file which is not openable at the start up is named "SPBBACKUPRUNNER.LNK" AND THE LINK IS REFERRED TO A FILE IN WINDOWS FOLDER NAMED (OF COURSE) "SPBBACKUP RUNNER"
Which could be the possible problem not allowing this.
One most important thing is that i tried also SPRITE BACKUP AND an other backup program and also with these nes i have the same problems performing a scheduled back up.
Is there a setting i have to modify?is there a possible program that stop the scheduled back up program.
Same for me. I have tried all options without success. I am now doing backup manually at regular intervals.
I found that this is the problem when you backup the calendar from WM5 or earlier ROM version and restore to WM6 ROM. So, just don't try to do it that way, make a totaly new calendar in WM6 and the backup and restore will be fine.
I Tried A Scheduled Back Up In Wm 6 But It Doesn't Start When The Device Is Off Or If It Starts, At The End , The File Is Corrupted
hi
even using the manually backup creating a corrupted file , any how to fix it please
i have the same thing was...
one thing i do is Hard Reset my BA, after that it's backup as usual.
well can say just one thing, do not use crappy backup software
i have setuped my device to recover after hard reset for about 10 minutes with all installed software and games without any backup software just one sync and the cabs from the extrom

back up an tcpmp

hi to everybody, i've just bought a Jade. 2 questions:
1. does tcpmp work on jade?
2. Does somebody know a freeware soft to make a complete backup of the device? I'm looking for somenthing like the backup tool of winmobile 2003, with that you can keep a new device (doesn't care wich rom in already installed) and restore your backup, after this you will have your device not only with all your datas (contacts, appointments, notes, ecc) but you will have all the programs you had installed too, all the tweaks you set in registry will be restore. I'd like to find out a back up tool that make an "image copy" of the device.
Thanks in advance.

to 2: Look the HTC-website and find "Sprite Backup".
This tool make a full-backup from system.
thanks man!
to 2:
I've got better Results with SPB-Backup on my Elfin an Hermes
to 1:
test it, its work great on the most WM-Devices
I've tested tcpmp on my jade: no problem with installation, I see the icon in the programs page but when I tap on it the player doesn't start and a pop-un message write me off an error and to send the crash.txt file to the developer. So I have to say that tcpmp doesn' work.

Sprite BackUp is included in the Application CD, install both Software, 1 for your Jade and 1 for PC so you can backup your Jade either on your phone or your computer.

I also have the same error with TCPMP, Installation is successful and when I open the application crash.txt is created and asked to be sent to the developer. Is there any other good media player (free) which can be installed as an alternative to TCPMP
