I'm new to this PPC biz (HP 100LX -> Treo180->Treo270->XdaII)
So now that I've played with my XDAii for two weeks,
I'd love to hear what other people use. This is my current setup:
1. MagicButton - this change the 'x' application hide into a real close
and show an actual bar (like winXP, but on top). It is free, small,
doesn't work too well with Phone Edition :-( but is much better
than Battery Pack 2004. There are many ways to do this...
2. cLaunch - allows setting up icons on the Today to run applications
directly (like a desktop on WinXP). Again - this is free and seems
better than Battery Pack 2004 (which combines too many features)
3. GPRS Monitor - by SPb. cute. works well.
4. TotalCommander - files manager. free, looks good, seems to have
no bugs, allow zip/unzip...
4. Multiie 3.0 - allows multiple windows, full screen, save pix, view
source in pocketIE. Also Macromedia Pocket flash 6 addon to IE.
5. WorldMate 2004 - gives world time, misc data for travelers,
and weather forcast. Promblems: won't update via GPRS,
doesn't show sunset/sunrise
6. In conjuction with WorldMAte, I'm also using Pocket Earth which
shows a neat earth display and gives sunset/rise/distance etc,
and citytime, which is much more practical but with less data...
7. PocketTV of course, to play mpg files
8. myipconfig, pocketping - simple network utilities
9. ruler, rangefinder - neat utilities
10. Calculator - the free Engineering calculator by Agang
Summary:
working the OS: MagicButton, cLaunch, TotalCommander
Internet Explorer: MultiIE, PocketFlash, GPRS monitor
multimedia: PocketTV
world time etc: Pocket Earth, WorldMate, Citytime
network utils: myipconfig, pocketping
misc: engineering calculator, ruler, rangefinder.
Still looking for: a good regeditor,
battery/memory/etc display like Battery Pack w/o the other gadets,
show all processes/threads/memory status utility,
maping tools for GPS and scanned maps,
impoved contacts (like Palm's search), calander (allowing change of
date when alarm turns on), phone (dial with one finger / big letters).
Please post what U are using!!!
A note to XDA I users: I'm sure if you all meet it will be clear most
of you learned, a year ago, which is the best RegEditor, File finder,
etc etc... but us newcomers don't want to download every little
software ever written and test it ourselves ... please guide us!
Application list
After purchasing several hundred's of dollars worth of Pocket PC applications / games, I have narrowed my most used down to the following.
Hudson Mobile - IP Dashboard
Journal Bar
Journal Bar Expansion Pack
Super Calendar
Print Pocket CE - allows printing of emails and documents to IR and network printers
Resco File Explorer
Resco Registry Editor
TomTom Navigator GPS
Handymenu
Games-
Bejeweled
Jawbreaker
Pac-Man
Pocket Conquest
Been testing and resetting my PDA and finally decided to have this few programs in my XDA II:-
(arrangement as in my PDA pic)
1) HudsonMobile PhoneDashboard
2)Todayplus
3)Spb GPRS Monitor
4)Battery pack 2004
others :
5)Resco Explorer 2003
What program gave you the tabs on the today screen?
Never mind.. I found todayplus out on the web.
lol, I can see a "prettyest today screen" competition on here
That is pretty.
I just found Microsoft's Windows Live Search app for Mobile 5.0 and was blown away.
http://wls.live.com
It works like Google Maps but it doesn't suck like the Java based Google Maps I found online; it features optional Bluetooth GPS support, street and sat maps, it's free, it shows Traffic, helps locate local items like Resturants and helps with directions.
Is this the killer app? What are your favorites? Maybe we can make a list for other people to find programs they'll love as much as I love this one.
Rob
Summary so far...
Kevin Baker - My killer apps have to be Resco Explorer and Microsoft VoiceCommand.
Brian McGuire - Must install: Newsbreak 1.2
Lucid - Reperion GPS app
Ellistyle - 1-Calc is a great unit/currency converter (oh--and calculater) & Pocket Informant is a must
SINC - INESOFT Address Book, one handed contact lookup
Dandie's list...
PocketBreeze - best today plugin for a good overview of your appointments, notes, tasks, birthdays etc.
SPB PocketPlus - Still the most complete collection of must have extensions for Windows Mobile (TastManager, Today launcher and much more)
GPRS Monitor - A must if you have to count your GPRS/UMTS traffic
PocketZenPhone - The one and only phone profile switcher. Feature monster!
SpaceTime - More than a calculator. This is almost a math software. Competes with the most advanced scientific calculators on the market (like TI-89)
Pebbles - Very nice and free tool to remote control your pc. Can work like a touchpad
TCPMP - The one and only video player
MortPlayer - The one and only music player
SKTools - Very good collection of system tools
SpriteBackup - The classic backup tool
BGjr - Another *BIG* vote for mortplayer here. It's the only player that I can I get to work completely
Mviana - Felxmail 2007
lajson - I would higly recomend GSPlayer for mp3 and acc audio and internet radio station lissening with a tons of settings and equalizer
srmz - Another set of great applications from Softmaker which is Textmaker (Word Processor) and Planmaker (Spreadsheet).
music man - GoodLink - exchange server sync
wwwes - mapopolis GPS app, pocket stars - very nice star chart software
armedmetallica - Jetware Hands-free Extension provides additional functionality to the built-in Windows Mobile support for the Bluetooth Hands-Free Profile
hotnan - Cash Organizer
dny238 - Windows Live Messenger Beta this app fixes all my problems syncing with Hotmail
I've stopped maintaining the above list...
Look here instead. Keep adding to this post, or add your stuff to the Wiki instead. I like the Forum's email alert feature.
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Must_have_tools
i cant wait to give this a better shot tomorrow, this thing looks freaking awesome!!! i wish iguidance would give real time traffic updates like this
It's also very fast and works so much better than Virtual Earth Mobile, particularly when searching for something.
i wonder who made this program.. its to good of quality for a MS product but then again i havent given it a full trial yet...

The only issues I have had with it are related to the GPS connectivity and occasional lockups.
If I leave it running while I go into a store, frequently when i return to the car I can't get it to start communicating with the GPS again without quitting the entire application and starting it back up. Seems like simply unchecking GPS and rechecking from the Menu should do the job.
No other killer apps out there?
Rob
My killer apps have to be Resco Explorer and Microsoft VoiceCommand.
Resco Explorer... easy viewing of available memory, quick access to a (much better than the built in) file explorer, and a nice registry editor.
Microsoft Voice Command... fantastic! Never before have I used voice recognition that works so well, and doesn't require training!!
Follow my software reviews here at the Generic forum; there're a lot of killer apps I've reviewed.
Just tried WLS and you are correct - it is absolutely brilliant! What an amazing piece of software. Kudos for finding it.
Which Browser
So -- which browser do folks use? I have been playing around with Opera Mini -- which looks good. Can't figure out how to reprogram my upper right button to select it though (since, as a midlet, it does not show up separately in the program list)
I am not sure if this would qualify as a "killer app", but its a must install for me.

RE: Windows Live Search Mobile
How the heck do I enter specific addresses for directions? It only lets me get directions from city to city, no directions to specific streets.
edit: I'm not using a GPS and I was testing on Wifi btw. I guess I'll try it out using Edge tomorrow at work, I get a weak GPRS connection at home and can barely connect.
Also, some searches seem to work, other searches don't. Maybe it'll work better over cellular data
I am a big fan of "INESOFT Address Book". Its fantastic to be able to look up contacts with one hand, and be able to choose to SMS them or call them with one hand and have big picture displays with clear big buttons when you get phone calls from people. Integrates perfectly and is by far the best thing i've installed on my Pocket PC.
I can now call, look up, and get around most of my communicating hickups i was experiencing before with 1 hand. My pocket pc is starting to feel like a mobile phone again. YAY!
i assume this only works for the usa - just downloaded it and it looks very good however im in the UK and then GPS couldnt download the data to support this - is there a UK version?
Agreed, it seems to be fantastic, but I can't seem to be able to do searches for files anymore, has that happened to any of you?
edit: i should rephrase that...now that the original search program has been replaced with live search, how does one search for local files?
I can recommend:
PocketBreeze - best today plugin for a good overview of your appointments, notes, tasks, birthdays etc.
SPB PocketPlus - Still the most complete collection of must have extensions for Windows Mobile (TastManager, Today launcher and much more)

Another *BIG* vote for mortplayer here. It's the only player that I can I get to work completely with my iTech R35 clip (full A2DP and AVRCP) on the SPV M3100 (TyTN). Combine it with a large memory card and the QVista skin and you have an unbeatable combination.
Unfortunately Mort's website forum database appears to have died a death right now, so I can't post links. However the version I'm using is 3.31RC6, and it works a treat.

Hi,
I just bought the Qtek S200 ( It has Windoes mobile 6 professional on board ).
When I play mp4 Videoclips they get stucked and are not liquid. How do I have to encode them ( I have encoded the 320 x 240, but what bit rate........) ?
Is there a way to overclock the prozessor?
There is touchflo on board, but what is this and how do I use it?
Thank you in Advance;-)
The Prophet only has a 195Mhz CPU you will be lucky to get any 320x240 H264/MP4 video to play smooth.
You can overclock it but i dont think you will be able to clock it enough for smooth playback. Try XviD or DivX.
Play with the formating a bit, I got mine to play pretty smooth in full screen.
And how do I activate the touchflo? I only have the option to enable sound for scrolling, but nothing else.
Another question - has anyone found a IR remote control Programm that works with the xda Neo? Vito remote for Windows mobile 6 does not support the processor.
Another question - is there a good programm available to read pdf Files? Adobe Avrobat does not work for me. I click on the Icon, but nothing happens.
Please, anyone?

These questions seem pretty unrelated...
To activate TouchFlo, slide your finger from the top bar (with the windows icon on it) to the bottom of the screen.
I don't have an IR Program as I don't use it, but I'm sure there are some somewhere.
Adobe Reader LE works fine for me. What ROM are you using? Attached are the files for Adobe Reader. Copy them across to your device and then run the exe in the folder.
Thank you for your help
I have tried the english version of Adobe and it worked for me-the german one does not work.
I was frustrated, because Touchflo did not work for me so I installed Spb Monile shell. Now Mobile shell opens for me when I slide from the top bar.
I have Windows Mobile 6 Professional CE OS 5.2.1948 (Build 18548.0.7.2) german Version - is this the rom version? Sorry, but I am totally new ( but happy ) with my Qtek S200
What is the name of the ROM for example: Coffie roms (ENG/DAN/NOR/SVE/NLR/FRA/GER/ITA/PTG/ESN/PLK)
Try downloading Adobe Reader from here (select the german version): http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2_mobile.html and installing it.
I think my Rom Version is shadow series cloudyfa.
Rom Version: 5.2.19.48 WWE
Rom Datum: 7/10/06
Funkempfängerversion: 02.07.20
Protokoll Version: 413.1.03
ExtTOM version: ShadoW 1.0 GER
I have another question: I tried some simcards and now I have all the contacts in my Qtek. I tried to delete them, but when I hold my stylus a few seconds on the contact there is an option to delete the contact, but it is only grey and I can not choose it. How do I delete contacts? Is the only solution via outlook on my desktop PC? That would be dissapointing.
Are they stored on your device, or on the SIM card?
On the device, you should be able to delete them through the normal contacts application. To delete SIM Contacts, you must use SIM Manager (it might be called SIM Toolkit) and delete them through that.
Thank you for you quick answer.
I have no Sim card inside the Qtek now. All the contacts were copied automatically to the qtek. I tried everything, but when I open a contact and mark it, I can not choose to delete it.
Is there another application that I have to install?
No. The built in software should be able to delete contacts.
In the contacts, click and hold on a contact (don't load it) and see if you can delete it there.
--or--
Load a contact. Tap menu, then select delete.
Thank you for your answer again
I did as you said: When I click and hold on a contact, there are the options send contact, copy contact, delete contact......., but I can only choose send contact. Delete contact or copy contact are grey, so I can not choose this option.
When I load the contact and choose Menu, I can only choose save contact.
I am confused, because I have so many contacts, but I van not delete them.
By the way, do you know if the technissin 4GB SD card silver will work with my qtek, because I wouls like to by it.
SD (no HC) should work. SDHC cards up to 4GB should also work but may need a driver.
I think that these contacts are not stored on your phone as you can save them... Try saving one and then see if you can delete it.
I am really confused. I can save a contact when I open it, but then I have two contacts. I can delete only the saved one - the other remains on the qtek when I go to contacts. Does that mean that each time I put a simcard inside the qtek it automatically copies them to the phone and then they remain there without any option to delete them? That is very strange :-(
By the way - I have no Simcard inside it now. I only tried some simcards to test the telephone feature.

No problem Adamo. Download the file, copy and paste into your phone. After a click and install on your device. Simple as it should be...
Am I missing something?
This file is .zip, not .cab... When I copy to the phone and execute it opens as a zip file.
I tried to change the extension to .cab but no luck as well... I'm lost here...

We should keep this thread alive and add more apps and games. I noticed you created an alphabetical order, may i suggest adding a few words describing each app, or arrange them by categories.

Hello everyone,
I just moved from a Samsung Omnia II (WinMo 6.5) to the Galaxy S (Android).
Well, I'm really in love with this device. Android reminds me the good old Palm days but on steroids . I believe it took me too long to move away from Windows Mobile.
But, as any OS newbie I'm missing some features. Instead of writing them down I thought it would be better to post them here. This way I might get some help but I'll also update my solutions so other freshmen will have a reference.
Here it goes:
1) Usb webcam - (something like WebCamera Plus from WM)*
* it seems hard to find usb apps for Android. Everything is either web or wifi based.
[PARTIALLY SOLVED] - Using Placaware USB Webcam . Video is working on several PC apps (e.g. Skype) but no audio. And the development is "frozen".
2) Driver Free Bluetooth presenter - I've found many on the market but they all rely on driver installation. I can't understand since windows has a BT protocol for that by default.
3) Pdf Printer - (something like FluidPDF VPrint for WM)
4) Good/Fast Encrypt Tool - like FreeOTFE4PDA on WM or TrueCrypt in Windows
[SOLVED] - Or at least partially solved using GP Pro (thanks to Android Market)
5) HP12C Emulator - can only find HP48.
6) Fax send/receive solution - like KSE Software Truefax Phone Edition in WM (believe me, some people still send/receive faxes
7) Metro Maps - like MetrO for WM
[SOLVED] - Using aMetro (thanks to spyrale at post #7)
8) USB auto file sync solution - like MobSync in WM
9) IE Favorites syncing - used to sync the WM and PC directories using MobSync
10) USB Device controller - like MyMobiler for WM. Again I can only find wifi solutions.
11) Top Explorer solution - like Resco Explorer in WM. I've been using Astro and Root Explorer but was hoping for a one single app that does the full job.
12) Skype type solution - what going on with these guys? Are they out of their minds thinking that people will buy an specific device just because it has skype on it? I've got the Skype beta for Android but I can't get a dial pad on it????
[SOLVED] - Using Nimbuzz (thanks to Kalikot at post #2)
13) Full Backup Solution - like Spb Backup in WM -Perhaps Titanium Backup does the job but I haven't figured ou how to use it (still learning)
14) Good Travel Management App - like Spb Traveler - I know I know... search in the Market - I have done it but the search function in the Market is kinda poor don't you agree?
15) Palm Emulator - like StyleTap on WM - Am I asking too much?
Themes and Customization - I've been trying to have a full black solution. I've been using LauncherPro + Folder Organizer and it's 90% done. I'll post some screen caps in the next days.
16) The only missing feature is a black notification area.
[SOLVED] Of course the solutiong was right here at xda (thanks to MacaronyMax.)

17) Video Editor - can't believe it doesn't come out of the box (maybe on Android 3.0 )
18) Better Search - the search function in Android doesn't lookup on all contact fields. Sometimes I want to search by a company name (like my car's dealer) and it won't find. WM had the same problem and it was slow. With Android the search is fast but only on name fields. That's a feature I miss since the good old Palm days.
[SOLVED] Using Power Search (thanks to Android Market)
Well, I'll keep this post up to date. Or will try my best since I've got a 9 months cutie at home
I dont know about the others but the best Skype solution atm is Nimbuzz which also has its own VOIP service. It has a delay during calls but there arent any other better options other than the complicated SIP routing.
Titanium Backup does its job even if you move from other custom roms or other firmware. Its wonderful and its worth the price for the additional batch backup/restore options
Hi... I moved from a Samsung Omnia i910 withWM 6.1pro.
The BIGGEST thing I miss from wm over android 2.1 eclair (I have not flashed any unofficial 2.2 roms) is something as simple as installing apps to the external sd card.
I know some apps on wm 6.1 were forced to install directly to the phone memory but with MOST apps you had the option to place on the external card to save ROM space.
It suprises me that such a sophisticated device as the SGS and such a powerful OS such is Android did not come out of the box this way.

Blame google and android pre2.1 , Froyo is said to be able to install to SD but frankly I've yet had need. Also what do you expect? Winmo has been out for what, 10 years or more? Android has only really started to take hold in last 3 years.
Post #1 Edited - two missing features solved and two more added.
unless there are others come from the sam Winmo background, else you need to provide the explanation of each WinMo apps
for metro maps have you tried aMetro?
for backup i use myBackupPro, simpler than titanium backup..
Boy I'm really enjoying Android. It's fast and clean like the good old Palm and still has all the capabilities of Windows Mobile.
I've been a handheld user since the very first Palm Professional and so far I've had only three killing devices:
1) Palm Professional - the good old one (still at home as a remote control hehe)
2) Palm Treo - I still miss the fun with that keyboard.
3) Samsung Galaxy "S" - loving it all the way. Android, great screen, swype etc etc....
One more Solved. USB Webcam (check post #1).
