I woke up this morning and found that my memory card is corrupted. I was using the device last night and the battery died while i was doing something, i put it on charge and woke up to a bunch of scrambled files.
I took out the card and reinsterted it several times until the folders and files properly show. they show up but it says 2.68mb free, although its really something like 750mb+ free. I tried pluggin it into my pc memory card reader but it's giving me an I/O error.
Now when i put the miniSD card back into my device i have two storage cards (Storage Card and Storage Card2). i reset several times with the card in and out and still same problem.
I want to copy the files off the card and format it or recover the data but my pc won't even read it. Any ideas?
1. run chkdsk on your desktop (also see http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=39583 )
2. the Storage Card2 issue is a common one with Windows Mobile; please read http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/in...y_sd_card_likes_to_rename_itself_to_sd&more=1 for a fix
it's not allowing me to run chkdsk on the drive. "The type of file system is RAW. CHKDSK is not availabe for RAW drives."
Also i don't have the messaging plugin activated, but i do have spb diary, i removed it and still, when i reset my device, i open file explorer and there is a Storage Card folder
-------------------------------------update-------------------------------------------------------
ok, so now i fixed the storage card2 issue, but when using resco explorer and i tap and hold on storage card, then click on properties, it says 812.27mb used. If i open the storage card and highlight everything in it and click on properties it says153.57mb used. what to do?

Then, try using an on-PPC file system checker to see whether it's really RAW. (I don't think so.): any of the utilities discussed at http://pocketpcmag.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=17921
Note that you should NOT use their chkdsk equivalent - they, in genral, suck in this respect, albeit the new, Professional edition of Pocket Mechanic is said to be pretty good in that (I haven't personally checked it as yet).
If it's seeing the card as a RAW file system format, it's completely hosed. It should be a FAT16 or FAT32 format... not raw.
There is a slight chance the card's file table was corrupted when the phone lost power... but there is also the possibilty the card is bad. If you get the card reformatted, I would definately run a thorough chkdsk on it to check for bad sectors.
I had previously ran the "recover bad sectors" option from pocket mechanic and it took about a total of 4 hours but didn't help.
I analyzed the card and pocket mechanic says its FAT32 and 10.49% needs to be defragmented. I attempted to defragment it and let it run over night, when i woke up it was 50% and said it needed 11hours to complete. I canceled the defrag process and it forced me to soft reset the device
Now i can only view the folders, but no files. I didn't format it earlier cuz i wanted the files on it but i guess i can give them up now.
Since i'm not able to read the card through my pc's card reader, should i go ahead and format it through resco explorer?
contents on the card are hosed.... you will need to format the card and start over... the card is good, the table was just corrupted by losing power...

That's what I was thinking too.
it got hosed by the loss of power.. has happened to me once... this is also similiar to the time i corrupted a usb thumbdrive.. was in a 2k machine that wasnt set up for fast removal, i pulled it out without stopping it and bam it hosed my stick... im guessing its the same principal.. the device leaves the table open for more writing, well when the memory device loses power it cant close the table and corrupts it (at least i think thats how it works)
Thanks guys, i just hit the reformat and it took under a second. But all my files are gone now
I tried GetDataBack but it was telling me something about bad sectors and I/O errors.
is there a possibility of recovering the files after the card has been formatted?
I had a similar problem, I soft reset my phone and the storage card "disappeared" (did not appear in file explorer) and I put it in an SD reader and it said it was unformatted (RAW format) and reports size as 14mb! (It is a 1gb card).
I cannot format it on my SD card reader because it says it is "read only" (even tho the miniSD to SD adaptor switch is in the correct position). Obviously I cannot format it from my phone, as it does not even appear to be mounted.
Any suggestions?! I'm guessing it's dead. I have bought a 2gb card now so not the end of the world but it'd be nice to have this card to use in my camera or something.
Cheers
DAMN YOU SPB INSIGHT!!!!
It happened again! but this time there was no power loss. last i remember was answering a phone call and when i hung up SPB Insight popped up saying "connection lost retry?" So i click on retry and put it back in my pocket. Then about 4 or 5 hours later i attempted to start an app i had installed on my Mini SD card and it wouldn't open. So i opened resco file explorer and same thing, can only view folders, not files.
My Mini SD card is supposed to be my back up. How the hell can i rely on it if everything keeps wiping twice a month?

The Sandisk 256mb SD card in my xda II refuses to be formatted! I have used Cnetx Flash Format, StorageTools and PocketMechanic to format the card to get rid of unwanted data. All progs re-format the card, but when rechecking with File Explorer, all data is still there. I note that these files are marked in the Album app with a small lock image, as if they have been attributed read only. If so, how can I change the file attrib?
are you sure that the read/write lock on the card is not turned on ?
Definitely not.
can a sdcard reader format it ?
with pocket mechanics did you do a logic format or a fysical format ?
Definitely not.
Did a logical format with Pocket Mechanic
try a fysical format then it's more like a lowlevel format on a pc
Definitely not.

was this definitly not directed to the sdcard reader for the pc not being able to format the card ?
Have tried the low level and once again a logical format. Same result: folders and files still present. The "definitely not" was a repeat. Don't have a reader, but will try to borrow.
Have tried to format the SD card via a usb reader (which works! tested on a CF card). No luck: "Windows was unable to complete the format." I guess its kaput, and I have to resign myself to replacing it. Boy, this sure annoys me.
it happened to me once ... I formated my SD card on my qtek 1010 devices and it couldn't be formated on my i-mate
There is a silly trick but worked for me ... try using XDAtools to copy a ROM file to the SD card ... insert it into your device, usually it asks you to format the card ... this time press YES
HI Biso007
YES. 100% SURE IT WORKING!!!!
Tried XDAtools - got message that "the media is write-protected. Error opening target device. " Tried again only to be told "target device too small to hold an image." Now since the lock is off, this leaves me only one conclusion: its fried. I cannot understand how it could have gotten write-protected? I have never applied any security software to it.
Your SD card chip is damage!!!
hi.
If it doesn't work. It means that your sd card chip is damaged. Check if it is under warranty?
Put it in the toaster for 5 minutes, it wont fix it but it will pass the time.
I just noticed that my phone is not seeing the MicroSD card in the system.
I have reseated the card and soft reset the phone so far, but cannot get the card to be seen again.
I was able to transfer some files to the card this morning so something must have happened after the transfer...
Anyone else see this problem?
I guess this has been moved here, so I'll mention this is the T-Mo US version. Stock ROM
Same issue...
I Have had the same issue... Figured it out when I wanted to run an app that was installed on my sd card... Had to Take out card, put it back and reboot the phone. If it happens again, will be taking phone back to T-Mobile to have them take care of issue.
Yea, that def. doesnt sound like how it's intended to be...
The card mounts in Windows, while its in the phone and I can transfer to it, but cant be viewed on the phone.

Check that you haven't got a 2nd 'Storage Card2' in the phone root folder - This sometimes happens if you try to reference the card while it isn't installed - another 'Storage Card' is generated.
If so, use file explorer, gsfinder or Total Commander to find your (correct) card and delete the temporary one.
HTH
Also Unable to Read SD Card
I am having a similar issue. Got my HD2 (TMO US, stock ROM) on launch day, SD card wasn't recognized starting last night. The phone asks me to format the SD card after a soft reset. When I connect to the PC via USB in Disk Drive mode, as soon as I try to explore the SD card the PC asks me to format it. Programs that I have installed to the storage card show up with a generic icon and do not start.
Maybe those of you having problems can provide some additional info about any changes to your device, and we may find something in common. Here's what I can think of that's associated with my phone:
- Customizations with BsB Tweaks and HD2Tweak (tried backing out the FAT cache settings already and resetting, card is still not recognized)
- A small number of manual registry changes which I can't verify because, of course, I wrote the backup files to the SD card *facepalm*
- Cookie's Home Tab
- Some additional games, Google Maps, Google Mobile App, Total Commander, PHM RegEdit, a few other random apps from O!Market
I also have Pointsec encryption on my laptop, which is notorious for trying to grab a hold of removable media and "protect" it.
My SD Card just showed up.
I had made no changes to the ROM at all. Completely stock, no CABs installed.
Since then I have installed some registry tweaks and some apps.
But thats my giving to a solution, which is nothing lol..
I have noticed however, that when the phone is mounted to my PC and Im in the folder, I cant browse to the SD Card on the phone...
Anyone else see that?
I believe I know the problem. IT happened to me several times, until I unplugged the USB cable, then the SD card magically appeared again.
When ever the phone is tethered, or connected to USB, the SD card is not vissible on the phone via file manager.
It should be visible via the laptop or PC explorer
Card Now Visible
I did have to format my storage card to get it to be recognized by the HD2. In case anyone else runs into the same problem, here are the steps I followed:
- Removed microSD card from device, put in adapter, and attached to computer
- Used TestDisk (www[.]cgsecurity[.]org/wiki/TestDisk) to view the data on the drive. I was able to recover all of the files and directories.
- Copied the recovered files to my computer's hard drive
- Removed microSD card from computer, put in phone, and allowed phone to format when the dialog box appeared
- Removed card from phone, attached to computer, copied recovered files to card
- Put card in phone and soft reset
Hopefully this helps someone out who runs into a similar problem.
Thanks for the above post - that definitely helped me this morning as I thought my storage card had stopped working.
Seems daft when you plug in the USB cable from PC that phone then shows storage card as not installed.

same problem here... hmmmm.. please htc.. do something
try a soft reset.
are you on a VF uk phone?
Got the same problem last week.
I find out the memory card got corrupted. dont know why.
XP didnt seen the card in reader at all.
Vista helped me to format the card, but i lost all my data, as i have to do full format to get the card live again.
Yes tried that. Yes on Vodafone but using laurentius26's Ultimate Rom which I believe is based on a T-Moile rom. I have been using this for some months without issue.
How do you format a memory card that can't be seen?
when you open file explorer can you see it there
or has it dissapeared from that too?
File Explorer will not open so soft reset now it opens but whole startup process now quite slow.Storage card indicated ...tap on it get inbox .mstxxx so email I guess and Temp folder containing cookies, History and temp int files. Thats my lot.
This is a common problem. Try removing the memory card, soft resetting then delete the folder "Storage Card" or "Storage Card2" if it exists. Reset again and insert memory card.
This problem occurs when the storage card is mounted on a PC (Disk Drive mode) and an application such as email tries to write to it. Windows decides the folder (as the storage card is mounted as a folder) has been deleted, so re-creates it. When the memory card is unmounted from the PC, windows has to call it something other than "Storage Card" as that name has now been allocated to a folder.
If that is not the problem, put the card into a PC and see if it recognizes it. It might say "this card is not formatted" etc. in which case you need to reformat and lose all of the data on it
the_sikko is quite correct the same thing happened to me last week. I simply re-connected to the pc and deleted the newly created 'storage card' and that resolved my problem.
I did notice a folder called Storage card earlier on now after numerous resets it's gone. I have also reset back to factory settings. Each time I reinsert the card Windows Mobile Device centre shows me the memory card (although my phone indicates no sd card loaded etc.) but when I try to access it, it disappears!
Try increasing the timeout that allows your storage card to be detected when the device is booting or coming out from suspension.
These registry edits worked for me:
[HKLM\System\StorageManager]
“PNPUnloadDelay“=dword:8196
[HKLM\System\StorageManager]
“PNPWaitIODelay“=dword:8196
Also, you may want to disable the power management on your storage card with:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Drivers\SDCARD\ClientDrivers\Class\SDMemory_Class]
“DisablePowerManagement“=dword:00000001
Hope this helps
Ok now I will have to learn wo to edit my registry
So without having to edit my registry I managed to grab the file that said Storage card but when I tried to delete (with the card still inserted) it I'm told Access is denied and I should check the card is not write -protected or currently in use. When I try to open it it simply disappears. If I try to delete it with the card removed I get Cannot delete "mxip_notify":There has been a sharing violation. The source or destination file may be in use.
Any suggestions?
Could really do with some help here cos I'm well and truelly lost in terms of what my options are.

I literally just had this issue. I have two Kingston 4GB cards and one of them simply stopped working. I wasn't able to copy anything from the mSD card to my laptop, so have simply formatted the card and now it no longer shows up in Windows Explorer (Windows 7).
Now i'm using the other card. I can tell by the way this card is responding in the HD2 that the other card became corrupt. I have just ordered two Transcend 8GB mSD cards from eBay for about £30.
I downloaded a tiny piece of software which is supposed to bypass Windows Explorer limitations and force format SD cards...but it won't work because the card just doesn't show to the laptop.
Well in the end I put the SD card into the card slot of a PC and after a very very long time I managed to format the card. All is well now.
my card got corrupted too
maybe i know the answer..
sorry for my bad english..
I've the same problem. But searching from all forums, finally i get the answer. just find n download EASEUS Data Recovery Wizard Proffessional 4.3.6 (for 5 MB). Insert the mmc in card reader, use this software to recovery all the missing file (choose Complete Recovery Option). After recovery process done, use software LLFTool (for 600kb, just doing some browsing at google) to Low Level Format the mmc (this LLFTool can recognize the mmc). After all done, Windows can recognize again the mmc at windows explorer. Just right click and choose quick format (format FAT32). Done.
Had to Hard Reset
Just to add my two pennies worth.
None of the above worked for me. In the end I had to Hard Reset. Harrumph!
So i read on droidxforums.com that i can that i could use my internal memory for my music by using root explorer to move it to a music directory within /system. and an app called Astro Player I tried just moving one album to the /system. when i opened Astroplayer it automatically read all the rest of my music. so i figured i would take my music off the SD completely. after deleting it it still showed up within Astro. however the Directory what gone from SD. soi wasnt sure if there were still some reminisce or something left.
So i figured i could copy all my important info to my pc and format the SD and format. I inserted the SD directly to my pc via an adapter and tried to format. It failed to complete. so i tried putting it into my phone and tring that way.
I now get a pop op that says i need to format before i can use it. I click to format and it tells me there is no disc.
did i just kill the sd card? is there any way of formatting and getting it back to normal?
any advice is appreciated. thank you so much.....
What are you trying to format it with on the pc? If you are on linux i would recommend giving gparted a try. It has always worked for me. Make sure you format it to FAT...
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
you likely formatted it to NTFS in windows, reformat it again to FAT, and make sure it's fully seated in the slot of your phone.
Formatting an SD card won't break it.
Problem Fixed!
No i was trying to format it Fat32 via windows. But i was trying to do a "quick format"
Formated without "quick format" selected. Took about an hour. but everything is back to normal.
Thanks for the help you guys.
Lucky SOB. I had the same issue, and it was a bad SD card. I had the same problem, basically; started copying my music to SD card on the phone, phone froze and xfer hung in Windows at about 15% of the card filled, did a battery pull and tried doing a full format (fat32 of course, which is the default for memory cards in any version of Windows, by the way; only way you get NTFS is if you manually select it, or the card was already NTFC) and it hung at about 15% of the way through. I pulled the 8GB micro SDHC card from my HTC Touch Pro, did a full format on my laptop no problems, put it in my Droid X and filled it, no problems. I'm waiting for a call from Costco as to when I can get the memory card swapped.
@ixobelle: formatting an SD card when it's bad can definitely "break" it (to be more precise, 'expose the broken parts')
Been experiencing issues with an SD card. this is an 8GB that I was using. I normally remove the SD card from my phone and attach it to the adapter toread from the laptop's SD card reader. one of the times I did this, Windows popped up saying I needed to format the device. I put the card back into my phone, and saw that the SD card came up blank.
I put the card back into my computer and ran PhotoRec to see if I could pull any data off of it...it spit out 3000 something text files all with 2 lines each of garbled characters. I tried using TestDisk (program that comes with PhotoRec), and it says there are no Partitions on the card. I tried to format using the command line formatter, but the filesystem now shows up as RAW. I tried using the official SD Formatter tool, and it says my device is Write Protected (when it is clearly not).
I'm about lost on what to do next, as nothing seems to be working. is there something I'm missing, or am I dealing with a completely dead card?
Try the thread in the stickies right above this:

I already tried this, but thanks for the suggestion. The problem isn't with syncing data, but moreso with not being able to properly repartition the card
At least, that's what I believe the problem would be.

Thought you might try his methods on recovering your data.
I understand. Recovering also wasn't a big issue, as I keep backups of my data every so often. My main major loss is the use of this card.
