I've had the XDA2, XDA2s, XDA mini, and now, (cause my mini LCD is having a problem) I'm thinking of getting the Atom Exec, but after reading this forum, I'm a little worried.
The number 1 complaint is the humming, and the 2 complaint is bad sound phone quality.
I THINK I can live with 1 and 2 because my old Audiovox Thera made a humming and I could live with it, and I don’t use the phone that often but was wondering….
1} Does the humming go away if the screen is powered off? If you are on a phone call and are running an app like PhoneAlarm and it powers off the screen, do you STILL hear a humming?
2} Can anyone compare the phone quality to the iMate JAM for example, (or any of the above phones is it better/worse/same) ??
3} Are the buttons locked down, or can programs like AEBPlus override them and allow you to assign whatever you want?
4} Has anyone found a case like this for the Atom
http://www.expansys.ca/product.asp?code=121959&tab=1
Should I get a Jammin instead? Please steer me in the right direction.
Bro check out the Nokia N95 you will be surprised. I returned my Atom Exec last week for refund, it had been replaced twice and still the LCD squeals like crazy
don't bye - too expensive
Thanks, I ended up buying the Jammin, just hearing/reading about too many problems with the Atom, too bad though.

Yes how strange. If someone calls me the phone rings, but if pick up the call or i move the volume control up and down i hear nothing. No sound enabled applications make any sound. If i put the wired hands free kit in it still works fine (phone calls and applications). At a gues i'd say the chip powering the internal speaker has died, but then how does the ring get played? Orange said it may be a software problem.
About to clear the memory fully buy taking out the battery for over 10 minutes. Fingers crossed it'll fix it.
Any other ideas, or has anyone else had this problem?
Futurity
I used to have a simlar problem with my Himalaya in that after using the wired hands free there was no sound. This turned out to be the switch in the jack socket not working properly. Plugging and unplugging it a few times it would free it up. But this wouldn't really explain why yours is still ringing.
Hi, That would explain it you know. When the hands free kit is plugged in and the phone rings, the main phone still plays the ring tone, but all other audio goes via the wired hands free kit.
Fantastic, problem solved. Orange are sending me a new one this afternoon anyway, but its good to know its not me going mad.
I do use the wired hands free kit every day though, so something to be careful off!
no sound output from my O2 Xda II mini!
To: futurity and jwhitham
I have had the same problem for a week now and it's driving me up the wall. I have been plugging and unplugging the head phones to no avail. I have been in contact with O2 Technical Support, Asia Pacific Region (where the device was purchased) but all their reset-suggestions have failed thus far. (There is something about a Cab File that I haven't tried yet.) What surprises me is the fact that I have only used this device for 6 months ...I don't want to go back to my old mobile but I love my O2!! and this incident makes me want to cry as there is no O2 support in North America (where I reside)! I feel so alone and lost with my device!!
Any help would be appreciated!
No sound output
Hi Upcityhighroller,
Its a hardware fault so no amount of resetting is evey going to fix it sorry. The socket where the headphones plug is has broken, telling the phone that the headphones are constantly plugged in, even when they are not. the only solution is to fix the headphone socket, or just live with a phone where you will always have to use a headset.
My headphone socket broken within a month of getting the phone, but i think i may have dropped the phone and the headphones lead caught it (i think this may have broken it).
My solution was to exchange the unit with a new one.
I hope this helps?

sound/speaker issue with O2 Xda II mini
Hey Futurity - thanks for the reply.
Another contributor on this forum had the same problem and suggested tapping the device against my palm. I gave it a try and it worked!! HOWEVER, now my power button isn't working. ARGH!! At the moment, I have the buttons UNLOCKED so it can be turned on by any of the buttons and have it set so it turns itself off after 2 mins of inactivity - but that doesn't solve the problem. I have contacted O2 about this again and although I hope that they would be willing to replace the device for me, I am afraid that it will take an extraordinarily inconvienient amount of time, make me pay the courier fee, and I will be left with no phone to use! I wouldn't be as worry if there was an O2 office here in my city. No matter how I LOVE learning about new gadget/tech toys, It is times like these when I miss my past simple existence with my Nokia 6100 and Moleskin notebook.
From scrolling through this forum, it seems as though many have experienced the sound output problem with the headphone socket. Correct me if I'm wrong but aren't the makers of the Magician suppose to test these things out vigoursly??
Many thanks!
To be honest a lot of these types of problems are only reported after the device has been released due to everyday use. I mean its hard to test all the possible strains that a headset socket would go under. Saying this, a Sony Erricson head set plug would just pop off and would not damage the socket as there are just contacts and no socket.
For me, dropping the phone and the head phone lead being the only thing that stopped it from smashing on the floor put a lot of strain on the socket. I preferred this to the phone being totally broken. Thanksfully my Orange insurance means that i had next day replacement. I phoned before 5pm and got it in the morning the following day.
I think the makes expect everyone to use bluetooth instead of the wired headset, so the socket doesn't need to be so robust. I only use the wired headset because because the voice dial doesn't work through the bluetooth headset and i can't listen to MP3s through it. I still think its a great device and seems to be the must have PDA this Xmas.
Hi all.
My Imate Jam have the front speaker with some kind of problem... When using it as Mobile Phone I can speak but I cannot hear the other person because the volume is tooooooooo low. I think it's a hardware problem after some times it felt on the ground.
I understand that the front speak sends the phone sound and the back speaker sends the media (mp3, video, etc) sound... Is this correct?
Lets assume this is correct and my front speaker is broken. Can I send the phone sound (voice) to the back speaker and use it like a "hands-free" phone?
ThankS!
Just press the green phonebutton for 2 à 3 secs and voilà you use the back speaker.
But now for another question: where to find some replacement speaker?
It starts being irrtating that a the people in the room in wich i am calling can hear the whole conversation :x
Someones got a clue? I opened my phone already to clean the speakerconnections according a helpfile form this site, but nothing happened!
THANKS for the tip!! So simple!!! Very thanks.
I couldnt find a replacement... I live in Brazil and doesnt have support for Imate here.
Can you send me link to the post that explains how to open to try to clean mine??
Check this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=26370&highlight=speaker+nokia
In the lower part one guy claims the speaker is the same as on certain Nokia devices. You should easily be able to find replacement speakers for those Nokia devices (or salvage a defective one from ebay where the speaker is functional).
Hope it helps.
Or buy a cheap BT earpiece. Got one yesterday for just €25 from Vivanco. Till Now it works fine & no big phone in your hands as well
Regards, M
I bought a HS850 BT from Motorola and works fine... But I like having choices... I will try to open it and check the speaker.
Thanks for all the tips!!!
I already tried a nokia 6600 speaker but that one is bigger than the phonespeaker .I think he ment that it fits as the rearspeaker, but Im not sure on that (didn`t pay attention on that, though my rearspeaker is fine).
I think I will go for a stereo bleutooth headset, because Orange thinks that it maybe will cost me over 100€
Whoah! Back up there!
SOrry about the interruption to this thread, but did I read that you can have the phone-call sound seperate to the mp3 output?
I need to have the phonecalls on bluetooth and tomtom instructions from the speaker AT THE SAME TIME.
Does anyone know if this is possible? I tried it on a XDAIIs earlier this year, but failed miserably.
The same problem occurred with a phone I just bought on EBay.
And I just found the solution elsewhere on this Forum.
Remove your SD card and the problem is solved. At least for me it is solved.
I don't know if it will work in your case or not.
Good luck.
Jeff
Just done it today after reading this thread, my I-Mate Jam internal earpiece (only used to hear callers in phone conversations) has been out of action since it went a bit flakey six months ago, been using headset and handsfree ever since! First I didn't want to send it to the UK service depot for fear I'd be without it for months, and then I couldn't find my proof of purchase!
I opened it up about a month ago to find the earpiece speaker had died, but I couldn't find a replacement anywhere. After reading this message though I thought I'd check the speaker in my old Nokia 6600, and lo-and-behold, it was identical!
My Jam is now working again as good as new, and the donor Nokia will hopefully be back on it's feet when the sub-£5 replacement comes from the ebay shop!
Thanks all who've contributed to this post!

I've just received a Mini S and so far fairly pleased with it however I'm fairly disappointed in the call quality - I currently use a P900, C500 or 6630 and all have crystal clear call quality, at least on the speaker end, the C500 seems a bit dodgy in less than perfect reception. With the Mini S it sounds almost like there's a slight vibration at the top of the phone, when I use it on speaker phone it's fine.
The reason I ask is that I would like to know if this is something I simply need to put up with, or if it's something which would be better with a replacement Mini S.
Thanks,
John

This is exactly what i thought! I came from using a couple of motorola's (which i thought were excellent quality). I have had my Mini S for a month now and you get used to it. Soon you wont even notice it.
if the slight vibration is the same thing i notice its because its too loud for its speaker. its a known issue and they're resolving it with the next rom update (imate is atleast) lets hope they don't tone it down to much.
this is an ongoing issue with imate.... i mean they had the same thing with the imate jam where the sound quality was really bad and they carry on with the wizard...
can't they do something right for once.........
Thanks very much for all the responses, your replies were just what I was looking for.
My main problem is I'm still within the cooling off period and trying to decide whether to keep the Mini S or not - I only have a limited contract so I can't make long calls on it, my other sims are Vodafone and Orange but I can't unlock the device unless I'm keeping it so they're no use.
John
Get a headset
My advice would be to get a good quality bluetooth headset. The call quality is much better so it's not a reception things AKAIK. Plus, you are safer on the move.
Yes.. Just picked up a Jabra JX10 and the quality is very clear.
First, the o2 branded mini s is already sim unlocked - well, mine was.
I also found the ear speaker sounded bad compared to my K700, also everyone I spoke to said "Are you in the bathroom?" So the mic must sound equally as bad to others.
I've got used to the sound on mine now, and with tomtom navigator, a 2 gig memory card and all the o2 software gone, I'd not change it for any other phone out there at the moment
Also, the sound quality improved on my bluetooth headset when I did a firmware flash, just seems louder now than before.
davebo: I do have a BT headset so I'll probably use that, I was fairly sure it was a speaker issue as the quality seems fine on speakerphone
a1laserboy: Interesting, when did you get yours? I did ask about the lock status and was told it was locked, but an unlock tool was available here, I'll check with my Vodafone sim later - that would be great if it was unlocked.
John
I find the call quality fine to be honest. If you want bad quality calls, use the samsung E720. Now thats bad !
Johnmcl7, I got mine 3 weeks ago from an o2 shop. I am also on Vodafone. I just poked the voda sim in and away it went. You'll need to get your gprs settings sorted out (I got my local voda shop to do it - and sold the salesman on getting one on o2 data tarrif  after I left the shop, he called all his friends to tell them, then went and bought one)
Incidentaly, I asked the salesman in the o2 shop if I'd void any warranty by flashing/removing o2 software, and he said it will not effect it. It'll be interesting to see what happens in the event of a claim.
I'm feeling rather daft now - I did ask about the lock status on another board and was told they were locked, so I didn't test it. However, I popped my Voda sim in this evening and no problem at all, it booted up and logged onto Vodafone - just finished a 40 minute call with my brother. Although the call quality is not great, as mentioned here you get used to it quickly which is why I wanted to try a longer call.
Thanks again!

agreed, I had a E700 before this and the sound quality was real bad in anything less than perfect reception, voices kept breaking up.
This phone you can get used to as long as the speaker volume is not up too high. when it is i am noticing this problem, if you want it that loud you should use the speaker fone as this can cope with the volumes you maybe pushing the earpiece to!
Hi all
My colleague has recently got a Orange SPV M3100 here in the UK and is
having loads of little problems with it. I myself have an XDA II Mini S and
don't appear to have simlar troubles.
The bluetooth seems very unreliable and he has tried different headsets. I
personall don't use a BT headset
There are many strange problems on the phone like when an SMS arrives and
you goto view it sometime you cannot open the message in the Inbox
application. tapping it several times makes no difference. you can however
close the inbox app so the device does not appear to have "locked". I've
never had this on my XDA
Sometimes the right hand side of the onscreen keyboard stops working. you
still get the key tap sound but back space/enter etc do not work. I have had
this on my xda about once or twice in twelve months but the SPV seems to do it quite often.
A soft reset tempoarily cures these and other strange problems. apart from
BT
I do notice that in poor signal strength areas these devices seem to
'struggle' and I assume this is because the phone module MUST take priority
over all other functions and the device appears to 'freeze' for a few
seconds. This does seems to effect mine from time to time.
All i'm really asking are these common faults with the SPV M3100 ? I'm just
trying to narrow down if this is a one off dodgy device or the Orange front
end software is quite buggy ? or thats just the way these TyTn devices
perform. I would have expected two WM2005 devices to behave in a similar fashion.
There is no 3rd party software on the M3100 apart from the Orange suite obviously
I am a technical person but he isn't and having come form a 'proper' phone
Nokia 6310i it is driving him nuts !
Thanks in advance for any thoughts
Kind Regards
Andrew
I've got an original O2 Atom (with the latest official O2 ROM installed). It has a very anoiying hissing noise when the unit is on. I.e. if it's on standby (so blank screen) and you press the power button the noise starts when the screen comes to life. It continues the entire time even if the backlight turns off, doesn't stop until it goes back onto standby.
I've had a bit of a Google search and found this - http://www.fixya.com/support/t227104-getting_hissing_noise_when_backlight - but there's no answer/solution.
The noise apart from being very anoiying makes phone calls quiet painful. Any ideas/solutions?
I only got this unit a couple of days ago cheap and secondhand, and I'm pretty sure that it hasn't been making this noise all the time...
i got this problem before. Its the hardware Touch Screen defact. Nothing you can do unless warrently is still in force. Changing thru your own pocket will cost more than wat you paid for it. Sorry...
mmmmmmmmm....dont get me started on this topic!!!
However, the noise does subside over time and be careful not to depress the LCD whilst the handset is in your pocket as this make the noise louder. Changing the LCD is a waste of time the noise starts again after a short time, Atom Life, Atom Exec and standard Atom have the same LCD, Mobo and yes......the same problem....
What you can do.......... power off after answering a call............try not to apply any pressure to the screen.
Dang, that really sucks. Makes such a nice phone a peice of poo now - I'lll be shifting it off shortly then.
So there's no real feasable solution.
I'm so dispointed, the more I use this phone, the more I'm liking it, but then every time I get a phone call I feel like droping it into the nearest bin!
