MP3 wouldn't play in phone applet [FIXED] - JAM, MDA Compact, S100 General

First: I hate how wm2003SE plays ringtones
I did bigstorage trick, tested all the testable and got ringtones work (mp3 in storage card) BUT, I was in searching of some software that can assign mp3 even for sms: tried the one provided by ringo, but as expected I had no luck
Then, I managed to install pocket bluetooth tools: great bt app, played with it a bit, but uninstalled it because the audio system thought that a bt headset was linked (and consequently, when I received calls the bt turned on itself)
Then the problems began to come: the default ringtone kept playing even if a picosecond before I changed the ringtone to something else :? after heavy registry tweaking (all related to ringtones, default ringtone changed) I get a wav file to being executed in the storage card as ringtone, and can change it in the phone settings applet.
BUT: I can select every wav files to play, even if it's on a storage card; I can select wma files to play as ringtone ONLY if they are in the \windows folder; I can see all the mp3 in the storage card, but I can't reproduce these in the applet - if I tap the ok button, the applet won't exit because it need a playable ringtone (I think so)
Tried to set mp3 with the excellent wma profiler, playable but not as ringtone; with mortring, when someone calls me I get an error bip sound (with the vibration  ) I don't want do make hard resets or so, not now that my baby is just fine
Sh*t of a bugfilled ring manager :x
Any help appreciated, MocciJ

MDA does not play neither mp3 no wma as a ringtone

Hi, all!
I got this problem: my MDA compact does not play neither mp3 no wma as a ringtone.
I changed a ROM to last i-Mate ROM, but problem persists.
Anyone got an idea?
ehmmm do it manually
what u have to do is, transfer the mp3 file from your computer to you MDA storage card. Then copy the file by tap and holding the file then click on copy... Then you go to Program -> File explorer -> windows -> ringtone and then paste it there...Now you have it ready for your ringtone file... Tell me if it works
Nothing works
Well, I put an mp3 file into \windows\rings\ and I can see it in Settings - Sounds and notifications and I can select it as a ringtone but when I press OK selected mp3 resets to windows default ringtone. The same situation with wma even with preinstalled wma such as Roaring guitar.
i get the same problem
seems like I catch a tail of the problem
On a clear device after hard reset everything is OK, ergo, the problem is in an installed software.
only software installed is SPB POcket Plus, GPRS Monitor, handyswitcher. resco explorer
Find it!

Have you iMusic (aka withMP3) player installed? In my case this software prevents MDA from playing mp3 as a ring
nope not installed
I have the same problem, with me it occured after changing the ringtone dir to the SD card, as described in http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=15902. After that, my ringtone keeps getting reset in the tools/options menu of the phone app, although I changed the registry key back to Windows/Rings. And that is strange, since the WIndows Default tone is not even in that folder, but in the WIndows dir! soft reset did also not work, and even altering the registry to make the default ringtone another one just resulted in no ringtone at all when a call is incoming! Any suggestions anyone?
OK, I may have a solution to your problem. After I f**ked up my register ( see my post above), I had the same problem. I fixed my register first, and then did the following:
-go to the ringtone you want ( in any location, be it your storage card, Windows folder or anywhere else) with File Explorer,
-just tap and hold the ringtone and from the pop-up menu select: "set as ringtone".
The file is then copied to the Windows/Rings folder, becomes visible in the list of ringtones you can choose and is automatically installed as your default ringtone. With me it worked, hope it does the same for you. Good luck!
I have been experimenting one this and basically from what I understand, you have to do the following:
If you want the thing to work as a default ring tone, I mean for any calls:
1) Copy the MP3 to Windows\Ring
2) Make sure the default application playing MP3 is working. Thus, if yo are using PocketMusic, make sure that when you click an MP3 file, PocketMusic will launch automatically. Otherwise, select Windows Media Player.
If you want ring tones for your homies:
1) Go to Photo Contacts.
2) Tap and Hold for your buddy and assign an MP3 ringtone.
I've encountered the same problem as antifa. When I try to choose an MP3 (saved in the Windows/Rings folder), it defaults back to Windows Default when I press the OK button to confirm the new ringtone selection.
It looks like the problem is related to file associations. After un-installing a particular software I lost the MP3 file association in such a way that tapping on an MP3 file from file explorer does not load media player.
I have now fixed the file association problem (using a 3rd party app) but the ringotone problem is still there!!
Any ideas please?

Ringtone resets back to 'Windows Default' by itself!

i have put up a small midi ringtone file (originally a Nokia ringtone) onto my JasJar, same ringtone i've used on my PDA2k for a year..
problem is that after sometime, probably a couple calls, the ringtone seems to get reset back to the annoying "Windows Default" ringtone for no apparent reason, and i end going back to the sound & notification settings 2-3 times a day to set it back to my ringtone :\
i did a hard reset, skipped extended rom for trials and ran it for a day, same problem!
after searching for so long i figured this might be something i have to live with..
so i reset my device, installed all my apps and tuned them to my liking..
only to find out that with SPB Pocket Plus, the ringtone sometimes stops playing completely.
for instance, i can see it selected in the sound and notifications, but clicking play on it produces no sound!
the default ringtones on the other hand play just fine...
the only workaround is to softreset the device.
i finally removed SPB pocket plus... and the old problem is back.. Windows Default ringtone keeps getting set as my ring
any tips.. please i'm so frustrated at this point :\
did you put the file in windows\rings ?
i think on storage card it might be a problem.
tried having the ringtone both on /windows/rings and on the SD card, no difference..
Try some other file format other than your MIDI, May be MP3
Look here, maybe this can help you:

I have the same problem with my JJ... Stop using midi tone ... Hope we will get a fix for this soon :x ...
i saved my self a trouble & changed any ring tone i like to windows default then over written it over the original ring tone but butting it in a cab file

I checked the above thread, and I did indeed have a different entry under the 'saved' registry entry. CHanged it and keen to see if this solved things.
OK, I have some progress on this.
When ur phone changes (ie goes wrong), go to phone/options and try playing any of the ringtones. Most fail with something like "file is possibly corrupt". Now, the ones that fail are WMA files, and the ones that work are WAV. That's why the phone is reverting; it's failing to play WMA's and is defaulting to a working ringtone (which is a good strategy - I guess...).
This aligns with other threads on mp3 ringtones; if you lose the WMPlayer assocition with mp3's, they then fail as ringtones. So, it seems that the Uni is losing it's WMA association - until u reboot. Now we know this it feels solvable:
- We need to know why WMA's are losing association
- Else we need to convert our ringtones to WAV's.
That's y for all other notifications also wav is the only option for us.
thanks for this theory... i still have this problem despite changing the registry...i will try having wav as ringtone.. thanks!

what are you talking about ? Jamin can use mp3's as ringtones - you don't have to convert them to WAV !!!
wav it's the only supported format for WM5?
And what about wma files in windows directory?
I don't understand guys....
I've mp3 file and I'd like to use it as ring tone end/or alarm sound.... can you explain me where I have to put it to be inserted in the sound and notifications list?
You can easily use an MP3 as a ringtone... all you have to do is put it in the folder: Windows/Rings and then you can select it for any of your contacts... alternatively, just click and hold on the MP3 and one of the menu choices is 'Set as Ringtone' this sets your general ringtone as the selected MP3.
Just one little comment: If you are using MP3 for ring make sure they are small (not several MB like normal music) or you will get a delay before you here the ring (maybe several tones long). There are two excellent free apps I found that let you mold your MP3's to ring size:
MPTrim: http://www.mptrim.com/ it will let you cat the length of the file and increase volume if needed.
Second:
http://www.mp3-converter.com/mp3_to_all_converter.htm not only will this let you reduce the bit rate to make the files smaller it lets you re-encode files to and from many different formats.
Final note: You can also use files stored in your SD root (if you have one) but they are very slow to load, and you can use the sound from WMV files without separating it from the video.
Try to use Ringo Mobile from http://www.electricpocket.com/ringo-mobile/

Clock alarm and SMS rings accept just wav files.Just put your wav files in Windows default folder
Many thanks guys!
Hi guys!
I've still a problem....
I justy put my mp3 in windows/rings dir but if I go to sound and notifications I can't see my mp3 in the list of rig tones...
I tryed soft reset too but the problem is still present.
I installed some sw like Photo Contact and Phone profiler ecc....
Now I have installed WMA Phone Profile and Photo contact (not Pro versione!). Is it possible that those sw can change some config on my Jamin?
Again. MP3 can ONLY be used as RINGTONES. They CANNOT be used for notifications (SMS, MMS, Clock,...).
To use MP3 as ringtones, you only have to copy them to the \Windows\Rings directory.
Enjoy!
Should be added that to select them go to:
Start->Settings->Personal->Phone
Ring tones
Curiouser and curiouser. After upgrading with Jester's 2.2 and installing Pocket Music, I cannot play mp3's as ring tones any more, but I can play .wav files. I can see them both, and both appear to open, but the mp3's are silent..... (both mp3's and .wav files are installed in Windows\Rings directory in this case). Last week the .mp3 files would play but not the .wav files!
.wav files installed in the Windows directory continue to behave as normal, appearing and opening as Notifications.
Can you still play MP3's with the built in WMP?
I suspect Pocket Music overwrote the codec for MP3 or screwed up the registry linking MP3 to it.
No idea how to fix this (short of hard reset though).
Yes, WMP still works just fine. No other impacts seen so far. So I'm happy enough, but would like to understand what happened.....

big problem with setting the ringtone

hello.
i searched all the net and all the forums looking for an answer to this:
i cannot set an mp3 as a ringtone on my HTC P3600.
i do not have the option in the file explorer "set as ringtone". i copied the rings in the windows\rings directory - didn't work, and in 'my documents' in the phone memory, not on the memory card -didn't work.
i tried with many mp3s, i tried this BEFORE installing any other program.
i get everytime the same error: the ringtone appears in the list from the settings - phone - set ringtone, but i cannot play it with preview and when i select it and click ok, it automatically returns to 'windows default'.
i have windows mobile 5 ver 5.1.465 (build 15673.3.3.1)
PLEASE help me, i am very disappointed, i have bought such a nice and smart pocket pc, and it has problems with some ringtones.. (
do wma ringtones work?
it worked!!!
what do you think is the problem with mp3? i mean, they are associated with ww media player, as set by default...
anyway, big thanks!
not sure ms like to push wma which is their own format
back in the pocketpc2003 days it was not supported at all without
3th party apps
not sure if it work nativly with wm5 and 6 though
Hey guys! Well my opinion is that wm5 doesn't have the corect codecs to play the mp3 that you have made or put in... so try upgrade to wm6 i'm shure it will work... my p3600 does!

how to set my customed ringtones for Alarm or Text message notification

Hi there,
i have search in the full device, but i can't set one of my ringtones for text message notification except the stock htc ringtones, and i can't find a menu to set a ringtone for the Alarm ( my wake up morning alarm for example)
is there something i missed , or an application to manage this ? or may be there is a method to save ringtones ( size , format, during time of the audio file)
if somebody knows it will be great .....
Charles
for the ringtone for messages you need to go to Application Data\Sounds and paste your ringtone there. (MS makes it easy for you right? --> NOT)
setting the alarm sound can be done via start->settings->system tab-> clock & alarms.
From there on you can click on the alarm bell to select a sound.
As for the alarm, i'm figuring out that one myself. It seems no .mp3 can be used for the alarm sound. I think it needs to be a .wav file.
If anyone has a solution for the alarm, please post!
Use a great program on my xda2i called Alarmtoday. It's excellent, but today screen based... unsure how it'll work with tf3d.
I have also heard someone tout a program called ptravel alarm. I'm getting my HD early this week and I WILL be working on this so i'll keep watching this thread.
thanks for the path ...i will try for the text message sound ......
regarding the Alarm sound choice , it's really amazing that you don't a menu to pick you favorite mp3 ringtone and make it your alarm sound .... i'm an old iphone user but a 8 years nokia user , and i always had the choice .....
.... hope you will find a way for this .....
Charles
the Diamond has a program called MP3 Trimmer which places the file in the right folder, i'd heard the HD had this program?

yes it does
i'v tried with the wav file for my text message notification and it works if stored in Application data / sounds ...but i have shell32,exe error message .....
hummm not so good.
for the alarm issue: i converted an mp3 song of 3,5 mo in wav format and the result is a wav file of 35 mo !!!!! i think it's too big for just a sound file and i didn't try to store it and set ti as default alarm tone .....
seriously guys, check for a third party program like I mentioned,
I use ALARM TODAY and it is excellent. MP3 alarm is just one of many functions.
It needs to be in "wma" format, if you want to assign your own sound to the text/mail alerts its has to be "wma", iv tried "mp3" and "wav" but it never worked. "wma" worked for me.
Thanks for the tip ..... i will try in wma file format ......
i don't want to use many third party programs..... the device is unstable with lot of stuff installed on it ...i want to learn how to use the WM6 goods but it seems to be complicated for some simple things !!!!!
MS needs to hurry with their WM7..... it's not acceptable that setting a ringtone or messagetone is this difficult. I would have expected that if i choose the property of a mp3 i can use that mp3 to:
- set as ringtone
- set as messagetone
- set as alarm
- set as ...
How hard can that be?
i totally agree ...... i don't understand why this kind of device can't do what can do a 25 euros nokia phone .... it's nonsense .....
i've been using a program called audacity for my ringtones and for my messages.
Under 'My Documents' there's a 'My ringtones' folder - I threw all mine in there, although it seems that you dont necc. have to (have to say, it's much easier/better organised on WM6.1 HD - it was a little awkward on the Cruise)
It seems no .mp3 can be used for the alarm sound. I think it needs to be a .wav file.
If anyone has a solution for the alarm, please post!

I didn't know that - although - it has to be said that the alarm program in WM is retarded. I use my phone as my daily alarm clock, have for years - there's no PRACTICAL 'snooze' option in WM - anyway, my solution - SPB TIME - works like a dream (pardon the pun...) and the snooze buttons are nice and big enough, even for my sleep fogged brain...
ringtone alarm problem
Hi
I found the solution of problem ringtone alarm
You have convert sound files to wma format and copy in windows folder
Disconnect USBcable and happy this!!
Sorry my english
ringtone/alerts
i have been converting and using my own ringtones and message alert tones for a while now,
mp3 files work as ringtones if you put the trimmed down version (as only 30 secs is useful) in the /Windows/Rings folder
the message alerts and alarm alerts you need .wav files placed inside the /Windows folder itself.
i just use copy and paste from my PC in active sync mode to put the files there and then use the 'Sounds and Notifications' to assign them.
i use smallest wav file ie 5/6 sec for the alerts but longer versions could possibly work..
thanks
i have made a cab file with a few tones and each of these tones will be installed into the correct place for you to choose under the right heading
www.ourhtc.co.uk/l6cum tones.cab is where i have uploaded it to (7.5MB)
contains approx 5 ringtones and 4 alert tones
rather than using the phone memory for ringtones and other tones, u can create a "My Documents" folder on memory card and put all your tones inside there be it mp3,wma, wav or any other format the phone supports, then select them from "sounds and notifications"
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=466760
For calls:
Can place wma, wav, or mp3 in \My Documents\My Ringtones
Or:
Can place wma, wav, or mp3 in \Windows\Rings
For other sounds / alerts:
Simply place wma, wav, or mp3 in \Windows Folder
if you create a "My Documents" folder on storage card, out all your tones inside there, be it ringtone tone, mms tone, sms tone or even activesync tone, which is wat i did i added a modem dialup tone to active, all coming from the storage, i can more a less guarantee that they will work from storage card even its its wav the phone will pick it and use where its required. personally i wouldnt use the phone storage for any tones

I'm not debating that, it's just that there seems to be a lot of confusion and I am positive that the method I posted works...although it is probably better / faster to store tones on the device as data in device memory is faster read then data on the card.
The tones take up SO little memory that...there are no advantages to storing on the card, but you may have slight ringtone delays (disadvantage) if you store on card.
