Difficulty adding my own ringtones

I have audio files of various formats which I wish to use clips from as ringtones. I notice that the preset ringtones are WMA format, & try making the file I wish to use into a WMA, yet my Xda2 still does not show it on the ringtones list.
What must I do to make an audio file on my desktop PC into a ringtone for my Xda2?

there is a program in the settings section system tab called "add ringtone" you can use that or if all else fails you can put your WMA file directly in the directory "My Pocket PC/Windows/" in your XDA.. then try looking at your ringtone list.. it should be there..

Neither work. ;_; The file is currently in windows, & add ringtone does not show it.

some people report that the xda's cant play all bitrate wma's try to see if you can play them on media player

convert your .mp3 or any other audio file using dpoweramp converter its freeware and then copy that .wma to \mypocketpc\windows\rings and paste it there, and then just open sound and notifications on your pda and select incoming call and choose that .wma that you pasted IT SHOULD WORK FOR SURE !!

or if all else fails, instead of converting your mp3's to wma, why don't you just convert it straight to wav format? that way you won't have any problems.. because one problem with the wma format ringtones is if you use it for the sms alert once it rings it wont stop (since it is long) even if you click on everything.. which sucks big time.. while in wav you can easily cut the song to the part you only want with alot of different wav editors..

Ring Tones.

I have an XDA II and I hv tried this great progrm Ringtone X this is available for download / purchase at www.mtux.com not only u can use wma files but also wav and midi files to set as ring tones. U can also set ring tones by group / individual contact or by phone No. great program. try it.

Success. ^_^ Realised the 'add ringtone' option didn't detect the WMA file, so used a WAV, then found the directory 'Rings' in Windows, & switched it for the WMA again. Found out it doesn't like mp3 files for ringtones, & that any files with foreign characters in their names (eg Japanese, etc) will not transfer.

The easiest way to get them working is to drop a wma into the rings folder, they should appear in the drop down from phone options after doing so (you will have to exit the options page if you had it open whilst transferring the file).
Any good sound editing program (nero wav editor, audacity, av music morpher) should allow you to load your file up, chop and change it and then save out as a wma. Try lowering the quality slightly to bring the file size down even further(wma should be a lot smaller than wav).
As for other sound notifications on the Xda, just drop a wav file into the Windows folder to add it to the appropriate drop down.

well i agree WMA is slightly lighter than WAV.. but if you're not too familiar with audio editing better use WAV and edit it with Audioblock as it has an easy interface or if you are an advanced user and wants to cut WMA better use Adobe Audition or the newer versions..

Q : Can ringtones be in MP3 Format?

How come when I put a mp3 files in my ring tones folder it won't play. Does this need to be a wav file?
If so, i don't really want a 35MB file to play my ring tone.

I have a mp3 as ringtone, though I use PZP, but as far as I understood, PZP just changes the standard settings of WM, so it should be possible without PZP too... maybe try a different format of the mp3?

try putting them in your my documents folder. thats where i have mine. I actually made a my documents folder on my storage card, but it sometimes switches to the default tone when it rings from standby. i think its because it starts to ring before it powers up the card again.

Firstly, 35MB wav is like a 2 minutes sound. Do you actually need a 2 minute sound for your ring tone? How long does it takes for you to answer your phone?
Anyway, try compressing it to WMA. You definately can use WMA files for your ring tones. Get the encoder free from M$.

i guess ur problem caused by third party music software which they assign their program for ur default music file.
how to check it...??? go to file explorer, and see the display icon / play the file for ur mp3 file which u want to assign 4 ur ringtone. does it in WMP's icon and also plays in WMP? if NO, go to ur third party music software and unassigned/uncheck mp3 files format as a default program to play those formats.
because as i know, the device plays mp3 format for ringtone using WMP's system.

Quick & Easy way
You can make MP3's as ringtones easily.
Use File Explorer to locate then file, then press & hold with the stylus (or finger) until you get the options menu.

how do i change the sound my phone makes when a message beeps thru to anything other than the bloody voice saying "you have new message"
also the alarm? can i make it an mp3 or WMA?

Ok ok, put in /windows/Rings folder on your device.

it seems that you can only use .wav file format, is there any workaround to use .mp3, .mp4 or .wma files? wav audio format is so big it will be a complete waste of memory, btw. for alarms sound you must copy wav to \windows folder
Did you know that actual size of predefined .wav files in windows folder is almost 2MB and you can't delete it?

you can use mp3 and mp3 has smaller Filesize than wav. just use a good converter and use low bitrate. you can also cut mp3 files as you might do not want the whole 5th symphony for a ringing tone.

yeah- i got the ring tone to be changed to my favourite Hatebreed song but for the life of me cannot get it to change the alarm ring tone to something other than those included with the phone..... i used to have an edited mp3 as alarm tone for my sony-ericcson..... i am assuming this phone is better and can do that.......
any ideas to change the alarm tone?

You need to use .WAV files bummer I know as they are generally larger but it is the only way to use them.
Convert your MP3 files to .wav with a program such as Ease Audio Converter:

Once converted, connect your phone to the USB Sync Cable and let is sync.
Once synced go to >my computer>mobile device>my windows mobile-based device>windows and place your .wav file in the windows folder.
It should convert the file for mobile windows format.
Then in your phone go >start>settings>sounds&notifications>notifications>events and select event, then associated sound.
or for alarm
>start>settings>system>clock & alarms>bell symbol and select sound.
I found that the sound file for the alarm cant be too long, at 17 sec it wouldnt work at 10sec it would................ Again I used "ease Audio converter" to clip the length of the wav file.
Hope this helps, spent many hours delving around on the net finding the answers.

This is nothing to do with the Trinity as such- it is, and has been, universal with all Pocket PC/ Windows Mobile devices.
As the previous posters have said:
Ringtones can be WAV, MID, WMA or MP3 and need to be in the Windows/Rings folder. Later devices have other permissible locations, but Rings is univerfsal.
Other notifications must be WAV files, and preferably need to be 25KB or less. These need to be in the Windows folder, and are selected via the Settings/Sounds and Notifications control panel.
You can use MP3's as alarm, SMS and messaging tones, but you need add-on programs- SpB Time /Chronos etc for alarms, Ringo Mobile for SMS & Contacts etc.

mp3s as alarm tone?

Am i missing something obvious, or do i need some extra software to use an mp3 as my alarm tone?

In WM5 you can only use MP3s as ringtones, NOT notification sounds.
You need to convert your sounds to .wav format then put them into the /windows folder on your device in order to allow them to be visible in alarms and sounds&notifications.
Alternativly update to WM6 and you can use MP3s for all sounds.

I added an mp3 to the windows folder but it doesnt show up in the combo box

Is there a way in WM6 to use Mp3's off the SD Card with out moving the Mp3's to the windows root? If anyone has found a way please let me know been looking for a while....

What about WMA files as ringtones and notification sounds??? Is it possible to use them with wm6?? If so, where do they need to be put on the device or what reg key needs to be changed to work off the sd card. Thanks!

I've got a new .wav file in \windows and it is showing up in the alarms dropdown but whwn I select it the value will not persist ('flicks' to previous in list). Do the file properties need to be anything in particular and if so how is best to change them. Or is it something else?

Not to clear on what your asking.
Because I don't know what your running on your PDA? (OS, ROM etc.)
A little History is always helpful..
Did it ever work before?
I'll take a stab at it... I'm assuming you have WM6 as the OS and you have a hermes
From what you wrote, you have a new wave file and it shows up in the drop-down list but goes back to the default alarm tones, and that your new wave never engages, not even during the test?(where you selected the alarm tone)
I can suggest a few things:
~Try locating your wave or mp3 clips in: My Device\Application Data\Sounds
(This worked great for me, I was able to use the files here as ring-tones and alarms)
~Check to make sure the file is not protected, read only or hidden
~Try a smaller wave file at a lower bit rate (More or less as a test)
~Try converting the wave file to mp3

Would love to know this myself. Thought I'd been using some off my mSD card before upgd'ing to WM6, but am not able to make it work yet in vp3G's AT&T ROM.

You can use different 3rd party apps, i.e. enAlarm as alarm clock, photcontactspro for ringtones and sms.
BUT:
As the card is not responding that fast as Ram there is a chance for the so called SOD (sleep of dead) if your device is in power save mode. The alarm goes off or the phone is ringing, the application is searching for the sound file, but the card is not ready because of the power save mode. The application is confused - black screen - sleep of dead.
I recommend to save all sound files for ring- alarm- and sms tones in the main memory.

ok i figured out how to make the mp3 into the alarm tones. basically the file size must be around or less than 600 kb, and in wave file. if you have an mp3 convert to .wav, and change the quality. for me, i used PCM 11.025 kHz, 16 Bit, Mono, but its dependant on the size of your song file. you can use your sound recorder to make these adjustments.

how to set my customed ringtones for Alarm or Text message notification

i have search in the full device, but i can't set one of my ringtones for text message notification except the stock htc ringtones, and i can't find a menu to set a ringtone for the Alarm ( my wake up morning alarm for example)
is there something i missed , or an application to manage this ? or may be there is a method to save ringtones ( size , format, during time of the audio file)
if somebody knows it will be great .....

for the ringtone for messages you need to go to Application Data\Sounds and paste your ringtone there. (MS makes it easy for you right? --> NOT)
setting the alarm sound can be done via start->settings->system tab-> clock & alarms.
From there on you can click on the alarm bell to select a sound.
As for the alarm, i'm figuring out that one myself. It seems no .mp3 can be used for the alarm sound. I think it needs to be a .wav file.
If anyone has a solution for the alarm, please post!

Use a great program on my xda2i called Alarmtoday. It's excellent, but today screen based... unsure how it'll work with tf3d.
I have also heard someone tout a program called ptravel alarm. I'm getting my HD early this week and I WILL be working on this so i'll keep watching this thread.

regarding the Alarm sound choice , it's really amazing that you don't a menu to pick you favorite mp3 ringtone and make it your alarm sound .... i'm an old iphone user but a 8 years nokia user , and i always had the choice .....

yes it does

i'v tried with the wav file for my text message notification and it works if stored in Application data / sounds ...but i have shell32,exe error message .....
hummm not so good.
for the alarm issue: i converted an mp3 song of 3,5 mo in wav format and the result is a wav file of 35 mo !!!!! i think it's too big for just a sound file and i didn't try to store it and set ti as default alarm tone .....

seriously guys, check for a third party program like I mentioned,
I use ALARM TODAY and it is excellent. MP3 alarm is just one of many functions.

It needs to be in "wma" format, if you want to assign your own sound to the text/mail alerts its has to be "wma", iv tried "mp3" and "wav" but it never worked. "wma" worked for me.

i don't want to use many third party programs..... the device is unstable with lot of stuff installed on it ...i want to learn how to use the WM6 goods but it seems to be complicated for some simple things !!!!!

MS needs to hurry with their WM7..... it's not acceptable that setting a ringtone or messagetone is this difficult. I would have expected that if i choose the property of a mp3 i can use that mp3 to:
- set as ringtone
- set as messagetone
- set as alarm
- set as ...
How hard can that be?

i totally agree ...... i don't understand why this kind of device can't do what can do a 25 euros nokia phone .... it's nonsense .....

i've been using a program called audacity for my ringtones and for my messages.

Under 'My Documents' there's a 'My ringtones' folder - I threw all mine in there, although it seems that you dont necc. have to (have to say, it's much easier/better organised on WM6.1 HD - it was a little awkward on the Cruise)
It seems no .mp3 can be used for the alarm sound. I think it needs to be a .wav file.

I didn't know that - although - it has to be said that the alarm program in WM is retarded. I use my phone as my daily alarm clock, have for years - there's no PRACTICAL 'snooze' option in WM - anyway, my solution - SPB TIME - works like a dream (pardon the pun...) and the snooze buttons are nice and big enough, even for my sleep fogged brain...

i have been converting and using my own ringtones and message alert tones for a while now,
mp3 files work as ringtones if you put the trimmed down version (as only 30 secs is useful) in the /Windows/Rings folder
the message alerts and alarm alerts you need .wav files placed inside the /Windows folder itself.
i just use copy and paste from my PC in active sync mode to put the files there and then use the 'Sounds and Notifications' to assign them.
i use smallest wav file ie 5/6 sec for the alerts but longer versions could possibly work..

i have made a cab file with a few tones and each of these tones will be installed into the correct place for you to choose under the right heading

contains approx 5 ringtones and 4 alert tones

rather than using the phone memory for ringtones and other tones, u can create a "My Documents" folder on memory card and put all your tones inside there be it mp3,wma, wav or any other format the phone supports, then select them from "sounds and notifications"

if you create a "My Documents" folder on storage card, out all your tones inside there, be it ringtone tone, mms tone, sms tone or even activesync tone, which is wat i did i added a modem dialup tone to active, all coming from the storage, i can more a less guarantee that they will work from storage card even its its wav the phone will pick it and use where its required. personally i wouldnt use the phone storage for any tones

I'm not debating that, it's just that there seems to be a lot of confusion and I am positive that the method I posted works...although it is probably better / faster to store tones on the device as data in device memory is faster read then data on the card.
The tones take up SO little memory that...there are no advantages to storing on the card, but you may have slight ringtone delays (disadvantage) if you store on card.
