Does your SD card ever get corrupted? - JAMin, XDA Neo, S200 General

I'm on my 2nd card now, different brands, different speeds, and my card gets corrupted almost once a month. I make weekly backups of the card, so I never really lose data, but it's a pain nonetheless.
The symptoms are same each time. When it happens, I can browse the SD card with no problems. However, it won't boot with the SD card in the slot. I must first remove it, boot up, then I can insert it. Activesync does not work with the card inserted, and the Messaging app won't even open, so I have to remove the card before I can sync w/ my Exchange Server.
I'm not sure why the Messaging app is so tightly integrated with the SD card and why the card would prevent the app from opening when the card is in the slot. The database exists in the internal storage; only the attachments are stored on the card.
Anyone else experience this craziness?

What brand are your memory cards and where are you buying them?

Problems w/ 2GB Sandisk Mini-SD

Hi All,
Just wondering if anyone else is getting intermittent issues w/ their mini-SD card.
I've lost essentially all my data on my 2GB Sandisk on three separate occasions. I have formatted different ways (once w/ RescoExp, and then FAT32 on 2 computers), been v. careful closing my apps and minimizing the amount of writing to the card.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
Sandisk's comments are as follows:
"This is a known issue with the devices when they work this way with 2GB and up memory cards. Usually in this cases you just need to contact the manufacturer of the device that you having issues with the reading on, to find out about compatability and what kind of firmware update do you need."
Thanks!
I haven't had any issues with my SanDisk 2gb card using my K-JAM.
Now on other pdas and with other cards, I have had the "lose everything" problem. Two reasons I had...storing email attachments on the and having the unit crash while accessing the card.
My onyl problem with the larger card is my laptop doesn't recognize it
I lost all of my data just last week off of my card, I went ahead ahd reformatted it again, not sure whats wrong with the 2gb cards

I haven't had a single issue with my 2GB TOPRAM card. I have had a few issues where the device doesn't see it (I assume) and renames the folder to Storage Card 2 and creates a new folder "STorage Card" with nothing there. It happens rarely and when it does, I just take the card out, rename the bad folder to StorageCardOld then insert the card again. This corrects the issue. I use the card very heavily and have had it since around the end of January.
I too have had this problem. I hope my suggestion helps.
I've had issues in the past with Sandisk flash cards. My problems were the same as yours until some helpful spark suggested I do a disk error check using windows (right click on drive in explorer>properties>Tools>Error Checking). Format the card and then run the disk check, apparently some Sandisk flash cards exhibit not so rare sector problems. His explanation (the science bit of which I have long since forgotten) was that that by running the disk check, the utility automatically marks the error causing sectors as unusable. The disk can then be used as normal after that, but any reformatting should have the disk check run again to mark the sectors once more.
This has helped me in 2 out of three occasions and so may or may not work for you. Still, I hope this solves your problem.
BS answer from Sandisk
Leighj, that's a BS answer from Sandisk. I guess it would never occur to them that your SD card is defective. Try another card in your machine or that card in another PDA phone if you have either of those options, but if not contact Sandisk and get a replacement. It should have a lifetime warranty, or at least several years.
Have to agree with iclick. My Sandisk cards were basically defective and how I got them running was a workaround and not a solution.
Yes - I wasn't too happy with their response either. Anyway, I just ran through error checking before & after reformatting. Hopefully that works - if not I'm off to shop for a new card. Either way, it's probably the last Sandisk mem card I purchase.
Thanks for your comments!
I have a Sandisk 2Gb Mini-SD as well and I've not had any issues with it so far. If it helps, I've left the card in the factory default format of FAT only - not FAT32. Try putting yours back to FAT and see if you still get any issues. Depending on what program you use the option you want might be labelled as FAT16 instead of just FAT.
I have Sandisk Ultra 2G miniSD, I don't have any problems untill recently. Whenever I try to add my storage capacity to more than 60%, 1GB or more, it gave me an error because the file is write protected and then not responding file transfer.
First, I taught my file is broken, but when I removed other files from the mini SD card and then add it ..... it's work. I used a factory Format type. Do anyone have this problems :?:
Well after contacted Sandisk customer services regarding my memory. They asked me to reformat my card and I did that. through my laptop, but it said that windows cannot complete the format. Now the card is dead.
Do the mini sd cards have a lock?
Do these cards have a lock on them? My old SD cards had a slider but I don't see one on the sandisk card.
The miniSD doesn't have a lock, but the miniSD-to-SD adapter does have a slider just like a real SD.
if i take my sd out for any reason it will often take a few goes to get it recognised by the mini s again. I have to remove/insert it as many as 10 times.

MDA Storage Card Woes...

I've had a T-mobile MDA (USA) for about a month now, and I really enjoy it! But, starting a few days ago, I've been having a lot of trouble with the MiniSD flash memory cards. The first card I had was a Corsair 2GB minisd, it worked fine for about a month, then it mysteriously stopped working a few days ago. I decided to RMA the card, but while I waited for my new one to arrive, I would purchase a cheap 1GB minisd so I could at least have some of my data and programs.
The second miniSd (this one branded with the name of the store I got it from: 'Micro Center') lasted for the past two days. I noticed it was dead this morning.
Here are the symptoms in both cases:
-SD card disappears from device.
-Soft-reset / Hard-reset to find that device wants to format SD card b/c it is unreadable.
-Format SD card, only to find that it disappears from the device once more
-MDA no longer responds to SD card.
For Corsair 2GB MiniSD:
-Attempt to format SD card using desktop PC, which leaves the card with half of it's total memory available (1GB). This is also not readable on the MDA device.
I'm very distraught by this whole incident - is it possible that there is something wrong with my MDA? Or is there a possibility that the programs and data I'm storing on the MiniSD are somehow corrupting it?
There's a T-mobile store near my office, I'm thinking about heading over there on my break to ask about this... but I'm afraid I wont get anywhere with them...
If anyone has any thoughts, suggestions, etc... please let me know!
Thanks
I have issues with my SD card. Quite infrequently the SD card disapears - which is pretty annoying. In my case simply ejecting it and reseating it seems to fix the problem. Occaisonally it becomes a little more problematic.
I think it is a problem with the SD socket on the Wizard, as a friend of mine has the same problem.

Help! Memory card undetectable!

Very confused, I minute I was listening to music and the next minute my memory card became unreadable. I have resetted the phone several times and have taken the memory card out and reinserted it and still it will not read that card and when booting as majority of my programs is on the card error messages on boot gallore. Also tried my sd card on my friends HTC and also same problem.
Any way to fix this problem as it still shows that the SD card has 1gig of information on it but it cannot see.
Hope someone can shed some light on this. THanks
USB?
I understand that it's highly unlikely ..........But, you're not connected via the usb cable to a PC are you? this will hide the starage card (unless by activesync)
Nope not connected to anything.. In Fact when I connect it to the computer, the computer won't recognize it either ..
Simply read these threads. Not that it will fix your card, but it will help you accept you simply need to buy a new one (given that you claim your PC also does not recognize it)

Personally, I consider myself lucky that it is the card that broke, not the phone.
Check out the StorageTools app mentioned in the Thread above.
This has a verify option for SD cards. I used it on my 16gig card when it started behaving strange (due to some weird app I used and terminated).
Later I used the format option to fix the card - worked fine !!

can sd cards be reused?

If i have successfully used an sd card in my focus, can i use it on my computer again? (after formating of course)
Not unless you can reformat it inside a Nokia/Symbian phone. Whenever you format a card in WP7 it uses the SD Card's security feature to lock the card to the phone. Unfortunately, Nokia dumbphones and most smartphones running Symbian (which is mostly Nokia anyway) are the only devices commonly known to be able to read and format a microSD card that has been locked using the SD card security.
well now...thats not cool...
As ****ty as it is, it's something they have documented in the manual (yeah, I know no one reads them) and they've always said they don't support "user-replaceable storage". In the case of the Focus, it's "user-expandable" and even then they suggest that it is done at the time of initial purchase. Of course, with there being all but zero easily available certified cards (worse-so when talking about cards available at stores), this is nigh-impossible.

[Q] HD2 - Internal Memory 0 Free Space

I apologize if this has been stated before; however, I have been searching for the past 2 days and could not find anything. I would greatly appreciate any help.
The problem is that I do not have an SD card and installed WP7 onto the internal memory of my HD2. Every time I connect it to zune, zune tells me I have 0 free space left; however, my phone is currently telling me that I have 70+MB left. I try to sync a picture to my phone and it does not work. I tried messing with the reserved space, restarting WP7, re-installing it, etc. But the problem still persists. Am I doing something wrong? Do you need to have an SD card to copy stuff onto the HD2? If there is a way to fix this problem, please let me know or direct me to a thread that contains the fix, either way, I would greatly appreciate it.
You've answered the question yourself.
A sd card is required to let WP7 function properly as it will be part of the OS.
WP7 can be picky on sd cards though, not all are supported. It can cause wifi malfunction, bootloop or WP7 can't recognize SD error message.
It's a gamble, but SanDisk Class 2 and 4 seem to work for most people. (I use a 16gb Class2 SanDisk with no problem)
Hope this helps.
Have the same Problem, installed fresh, sinced my contacts and Email from GoogleMail and now no Space
insert the SD Card from my Android before, but nothing. Think i must format it

Sorry sire, but you are placing wrong facts on the table.
The problem mentioned in OP is because WP7 reserves some place which is around ~10% on the device for cache use and to serve as storage of emails, msgs, call logs etc.

Your problem could be that WP7 does not work well with your SD. make sure it is class 4 or greater.
So, you need an SD card to add content to the HD2?
