I have my O2 mini to connect to Exchange Server, however, it won't connect automatically (my settings is at every 15 minutes). It kept generating the following error:
"unable to connect, verify your dialup or proxy settings are correct, and try again. Error code: CONNMGR_36"
However, if I connect the GPRS manually first, and then manually press the Sync button for Active Sync (at O2 mini), ir works just fine.
Please help. It drives me crazy to manually do this all the time!

I think you're connect to gprs using work profile in network connections. Thats why it is checking dial-up username, proxy setting and others. Change the connect ot ISP for activesync. Also you can keep GPRS always connected. Why you need to disconect GPRS?

Also, how do you keep the GPRS connected all the time? My GPRS got disconnected from time to time.

To change that go to setting > connections > connections > advanced > select network. Chosse internet programs "My ISP" and go back to Tasks in connections and configure you gprs connection details in "My ISP".
Your GPRS disconnection issue you have talk with your provider support. Mine I will never disconnect it.

I'm running Windows Mobile 5 on an O2 XDA Exec
I connect my device to the internet using 802.11b connecting to a wireless access point
I configured email for two email accounts,
One is a POP3 account and the other is a hotmail account
I've been able to send/receive emails from my mobile device as expected...up until today that is...
Just today I'm now no longer able to send/receive emails
I now get the following message on my device on attempting to send/receive emails
Cannot Connect
Cannot connect with current connection settings.
To change your connection settings, tap Settings

This message repeats itself. It appears the device is polling for a connection
Having done some reading on the topic

somehow my connection settings are messed up.

I've always had the "My ISP" option set on both
"network management" settings (i.e. connections>advanced>select networks)
and this has been working fine up until today.
So for both the options in "network management", i.e.
"Programs that automatically connect
to the internet should connect using"
and
"Programs that automatically connect
to a private network should connect using"
I have "My ISP" as the connection setting
For reference, I'm able to establish a wireless connection to the internet
using the device and browse as expected (I'm using the Opera browser).
I've read the guide here (http://www.pocketpcmag.com/_archives/Sep04/VPNConnection.aspx) so understand why I might want to use the "My Work Network" connection option. I have no requirement for this so have set both connection options to "My ISP" and this has been working as
expected up until now...
By the way, on top of this MSN Messenger refuses to sign in (Pocket MSN sign-in failed)
and since this is linked to my hotmail email settings, I'm not able to send/receive any hotmail

Funnily enough had the same issue with mine today!!
Exactly the same - MSN, Email and Internet sites (like google wouldnt work)...however (as I have Orange M5000) the Orange WAP internet sites were fine.
I did so many things to try and get it to work (Not sure which one actually did it to be honest)
But I used the reg hack to keep data connected - that was the first to be disabled so now it connects then disconnects.
I also use Phone Alarm - This was causing me lots of problems so if you've got it check the options. With phone alarm i had entered my SIM PIN code - no good this had to be disabled - In fact phone alarm is now just switching profiles and is working fine as long as no security PINs are on or data connection monitoring/logging. Also just made sure for "Orange World" (My default Network) that the internet access point was correct.
...to be honest thats all I can think of - but its working now.
They are complicated devices and mine has given me more headaches in my first week than the 10 months i had with the Blue Angel (M2000)...still shouldnt complain too much the M5000 was a free upgrade.

I have had a search to see if this has been covered before but maybe I am using the wrong query.
I have an O2 Exec with the latest O2 Rom, and now when I do an email send and receive, the GPRS connection stays up. Whereas I could have sworn in the earlier ROM it disconnected after the send/receive.
I spoke to O2 and they assured me that it is supposed to do that, and since I only get charged for actaul data transfer, I can sit connected to GPRS all day for free (is this correct).
Now, my main question is. Say GPRS is up and connected, and I turn on WIFI or plug into my PC using the charger/sync cable and then do a send and receive. Will the Exec use these free connections or still route data over the GPRS?
I did a test and it looked as though when I did this, the GPRS connection was shut down, as after a send/receive and then disable WIFI, the connection setting showed a large U and not the connected icon.
I am now sitting with a GPRS connection active, email is set to manual and I have Pocket Weather set to 'Auto update on connection' and 'Auto update on Active Sync', but 'Use connection manager' is disabled as is 'Force a connect when not available'.
Should this mean that no data is used at all and that I can sit connected at no cost.
Sorry for the long rambling post, but I am a complete newbie to all this GPRS pda thing.

related question - how to stop gprs connecting automatically
My wifi router at home is dodgy and sometimes the signal drops - this means my exec switches over automatically to GPRS (I'm not in a 3G area) and starts whacking up a big data bill before I realise. Is there anyway of getting it to ask me if I want to connect to GPRS - rather than it just telling me thats what its doing? Can't turn the phone off cos I still need to receive calls.
I did think of just scarmbling my connection settings, but now I've upgraded to the latest O2 rom the connections settings page does not show any existing connections! (I also can't get TomTom to run at all now but I guess I'll work through that one :-( )

ou can set which connections programs use for thier internet access in Settings -> Connections -> Connections -> Advanced, Select Networks.
Choosing My Work Network or My ISP should stop programs sucking up your money.

EDIT: Hey I've just read what I've written below and its exavctly what Preditor suggested - funny didn't work when I tried ........ I guess it was because I was trying 'My ISP' without gprs settings - which complained - whereas 'My Work Network' without gprs settings allows the wifi to connect ... :?
I've now got a workaround for this - means going through the menus every time I DO want GPRS data - but thats rare till I get a better contract which will have to wait till my 12 months with O2 is up in November.. web'n'walk sounds good - unlimited gprs :-o - (could T-Mobile really tell when I was using my XDa as a modem for my laptop - which is forbidden in the terms of this contarct - and when I was just usng data for its own programs - which is allowed ??)
Anyway what I do is settings>connections>advanced>Select Networks> choose My Work Network for programs connecting to the internet. I have no gprs settings in My Work Network but it connects to wifi no problem.
So when I forget and I'm out of wifi range I get an error that it can't connect, so change the setting back to 'MY ISP' and GPRS kicks in.
A Today Screen shortcut to the Network Management screen would help - but I'm almost always using wifi so I haven't bothered.

After previously owning a HTC Touch Pro, I am a very happy HD2-user
I've setup 2 email-accounts; 1 hotmail (using Windows Live) and 1 Planet email. Both work fine using GPRS/3G but they don't use Wifi when enabled. Wifi works fine for other things like Opera, weather etc. Important to know is that hotmail never worked through Wifi, even not on my Touch Pro.
I had to set the 'connection' from my Planet-account to 'Vodafone Live' in order to work. It was originally set to 'Internet'. But when set to 'Internet' I can't get any mail.
Can someone please tell me how I have to setup my email-accounts so they work through both GPRS/3G and Wifi?

I set up two email accounts on my HD2. when at home, I disconnect my 3G connection, connect to my wifi router, Internet browsing, weather update use the wifi connection, but as soon as I update my emails, the phone connects to 3G and use that connection instead! This is my third HTC phone, but this the first time I encounter this behaviour. It's really annoying. Is there a workaround?
Hm, strange. I have three E-Mail Accounts which I check. Therefore it doesnt matter if I use WiFi or 3G. If Iam connected via WiFi it works like 3G. If not 3G starts automatically.

Yeah, well that's exactly what I'd like to have! Instead, 3G starts automatically even if already connected via wifi. The good news is, there must be a solution since it works the way it should on your phone.

I spent a nearly sleepless night tearing my hair out over this but I finally found the cause (and the solution)
Before going into details, just a small warning, being French and living in France I own a HD2 with a French Orange Rom (and you can trust Orange to make life more complicated for you), so, I have a French version of Windows Mobile. I will try to translate as well as I can the different steps, but the actual wording may be slightly different on your phones.
OK, first thing is, I remembered that Windows Mobile lets you decide if a connection or a network card connects to the Internet or to Work/Office, I had already made sure that my 3G connection was marked as Internet and I thought that may be my Network Card for WiFi was configured on Bureau (Work) instead of Internet.
It was! By the way the card to check is "Broadcomm 802.11 DHD Network Adapter". I changed it to Internet and I tried to sync emails again. I was pretty confident but that was short lived as my phone immediately started a 3G connection.
Here we go again...
I thought about the way Outlook Express on desktops lets you decide which connection should be used for each specific mail account, and I searched a similar option here. And I found it!
The culprit was indeed the default provided (Thanks Orange...) : Orange World instead of Internet. I changed the setting to Internet (no need to delete the account) and it worked!
Now, how to change the setting (That's the part where I get to use my translator skills...)
E-Mail (no translation required) -> Click the account to modify -> "Modifier les paramètres du compte" (Change account settings) -> Suivant(next) -> next -> next -> next
So, you clicked next 4 times and should be on the screen where you specify your SMTP server. We are almost done.
There is a text box and two check boxes AND (when you minimize the soft keyboard) a link to "Paramètres de serveur avancés" (Advanced server settings)
Click it, you can check SSL if your provider requires it but more important you can select what network to use!
In my case it was set to Orange World, hence the 3G connection every time I wanted to check my emails. Change it to Internet and here you go! No more 3G connection when WiFi connected
By the way, in order for this to work, you have to make sure the WiFi network card is configured for Internet access (see beginning of post)
PS: If the way I translated the diffrent items is too far off the actual thing, please let me know how it should be and I will edit my post.

I was thinking of the same thing, so this was the first thing I checked. BUT (!) when I select 'Internet' , my email doesn't synchronize at all; it says connection error, please check your connection settings.
How can I see where 'Internet' connects to? I think there lies my problem...

Hi mrobers, it seems that in your case you had already figured out how to choose a connection but I would bet that you are missing the network card trick. So, set your account to Internet again and check your network card.
To do this you have to go to
Settings -> Connections -> Wifi (check activate) -> "Wireless Networks" button -> Network Cards Tab -> "Broadcomm 802.11 DHD Network Adapter" and pick Internet in the drop down list at the top of the screen

Thanks for the tip! I just checked my settings and it seems my 'Broadcomm 802.11 DHD Network Adapter' was already set to 'Internet' but my 'Broadcomm 802.11 Network Adapter' was set to 'Work'. I changed that and now have to test it at home tonight.

Well...Don't rejoice too soon! I just tried setting both to Work, and now that I changed the mail account setting to Internet, it still works for me over WiFi. As you had already set it to Internet to no avail...Anyway I'll keep my fingers crossed for you !
One last thing, on my previous phone, I've had a very similar problem.
I use my phone at the office for syncing with Outlook, every time I did that, activesync would alter the proxy settings and add the adress of the proxy we use at my workplace.
After I disconnected the phone, the settings remained and I was not able to use my WiFi connection until I unchecked the proxy checkbox.
Can you check that as well? (Settings -> Connections -> Connections -> Proxy configuration)
And I was sooooo happy
But I am still going to try this at home tonight...
I've already found out a few days ago about the proxy-settings; I work at Heineken and had the same experience after connecting it to my work-laptop through Activesync to synchronize my calender with Lotus Notes. I changed it back and it doesn't come back!
Update : It didn't work
Tried several settings but can't find out why. If I set my email-settings to 'Vodafone Live!' then I can sync through 3G, if I set it to 'Internet' then I can sync through Wifi. But never automatically
What do you mean by automatically? And from your first post I had gathered that you couldn't sync via wifi even after setting to Internet, but in your last post you seem to say the opposite.
Is the situation as follows?
Email set to Vodadone: sync OK with 3G and KO with wifi
Email set to Internet : sync OK with WiFi and KO with 3G

We already made sure that your WiFi network card is set to Internet, but have you checked your Vodafone Connection? It has to have the "Connect to Internet" checkbox checked.
HTC Settings -> Menu -> More -> Connections -> Connections -> Manage my proxy server (For Vodafone) -> Is it checked for Internet access?
Good idea! Just checked and the option is selected. There is also a proxyserver setup for my Vodafone-connection. Could this cause the problem? I could disable the proxy-server from Vodafone tonight and see what happens...

This is normal, it's the setup I had and which prevented me from syncing via wifi. And it means that your proxy server accepts POP or IMAP connections which is both a good news (you can get mail!) and a bad news (see later)
Email set to Internet : sync OK with WiFi and KO with 3G
This is not normal, and that's what we have to find a solution for. What bothers me is that if your proxy lets you connect in the first case, I see no rational reason for not doing the same when you select Internet for your mail account...
Anyway, you don't have to wait for tonight to do some tests, because the problem lies with your vodafone connection, not with your wifi.
In order to have the expected behaviour (Wifi first, 3G second when both are available), you have to set your account to Internet (actually it's worth a try to set it to work and see what happens right now!) let's do this and if it still doesn't work, I suggest you proceed as follows:
1 - write down the parameters of your proxy (don't forget to check the advanced settings as well)
2 - Uncheck the proxy
3 - See if you still can connect to Internet with IE or Opera
4 - Try a mail sync
5 - If it works, then great, dont' touch anything!
6 - If it doesn't work set it back to what it was before step 1
7 - Hopefully, we will come up with something else!
Hi, I have a similar problem but the other way arround.
I set all my network options to the 3G line ( My Work network isn't active). I connect to the 3G internet and everything seems to be working: Opera, Stocks, Weater; but the mail can't connect or sync.
But if I'm at home and if I turn on the WiFi, everything from the above list works including mail.
The mail I'm using is Yahoo mail and the 3G is the Vodafone NL. Right now it's a puzzle.
I had a problem you are describing some time ago, but now it seems to be reversed.
Did anyone had this and solved it?
RIGHT, JUST WHEN I GAVE UP FINDING A SOLUTION BY MYSELF I ACTUALLY FOUND IT. just disabled the vodafone proxy. Everything is perfect.

Hi guys. once more I'm trying to find whats preventing my email account to connect using the wifi connection. It seems as it will only connect through 3g data connection. I've tried everything. the only thing I can think of now is that there's a problem with the wifi modem driver because as you can see in the pic below it wont appear as a modem connection:
can anyone check is they have another option there that I dont?

I think that people that have a working email client should have another option there for the broadcom etherenet card and I want to compare.
Why are you going so "deep" in the "useless" settings?
Set your network cards to connect to "the internet", not "work", and set the email client to use "the internet"... and everything will work together nicely.

That would mean your 3G connection doesn't work either... but you did say it was working earlier, right?
I'm on WM 6.5 and the screen is different. But in the options I only have 3, Bluetooth is absent.
BUT that screen is not related to wifi at all, so your problem should not be there.
This connection screen is set by the configurator for your country/operator to get the data/mms connection settings. If those work, the problem is somewhere else.
If it helps .... I only have the 3 options you have. BUT I am pretty sure that the screen shot you showed has nothing to do with your ability (or inability in this case) to establish a wifi connection.
I re-set up my Telstra WAP connection and then my Active Sync settings in order to connect to Exchange as it did not connect straight out of the box (gotta love Telstra!) but all is working now that I have selected "The Internet" and have the right Telstra settings ....

I had the same problem last night at home, and quick resolution was to reset the WiFi access point. I know for a fact that it's not the HD2 because occasionally I had the same problem with my old phone (Nokia E60).
However, I too was puzzled by the message you are quoting. If WiFi does not work, the HD2 should fall back on 3G / GPRS / GSM, which in this case it does not.
I'm not sure whether your problem too may be related to the access point. If I were you I would:
a) Turn WiFi off on the HD2 and check that mail works fine;
b) Check that you have set your WiFi connection and your email client on the HD2 as suggested by kilrah earlier (to connect to "the internet", not "work", and set the email client to use "the internet")
c) Turn WiFi on and check that the HD2 does indeed connect properly to the access point (green tick mark next to the SSID). If it doesn't try resetting the access point.
d) If it does, check that email works as expected (which at this point should be the case).

The most "effective" -simplest- solution i was able to find to the problem is to "duplicate" the email account.
The "duplicate" accout was created "while i was connected to the internet via wifi".
Actually this "alternative" account was created - obviously with a different "name" - to be able to clearly identify it and different smpt - to be able to send messages via the adsl provider-.
Now when i want to check the mail via 3g i use one account while when i want to connect via wifi i use the "alternative" account.
This way you may have every now and than the problem of duplicate incoming messages which need to be manually erased but at least don't have to make too elaborate modifications to the settings prior to access the mail.
I have the same problem but the other way arround. I mean that my Gmail account won't sync unless I'm on Wi-fi . Through Gprs it won't work !! I get a "Cannot Connect" message. HELP ME
