TyTN - Ringtone reverting to something ugly in every call - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam General

Hi Forum,
I tried finding some report of a similar situation in here, but I couldn't find anything. So, here it comes:
Some days ago, my TyTN started by itself to use an ugly sound as its ringtone, one really annoying and not even the Windows Default, although that's exactly what it says in the ringtone selection field.
I constantly change it to one of my likeing ('OldPhone', to be precise), it theoretically keeps it even after soft-resets, but every time a call comes in I hear, again, the same ugly sound and then the ringtone has reverted to 'Windows Default' -although it doesn't sound like that, more like a metal-scraping noise
Perhaps related, but I wouldn't really know, may be the previous installation of Phone Profiles v. 1.2.1, an excellent freeware little utility. But I uninstalled it, in case it was the one causing the problem, and the situation remains the same.
I suppose I could 'fix' it with a hard-reset, but I'd prefer not having to go through this and I am starting to get really annoyed -especially when the phone rings!
Any ideas/suggestions? Even better, any solutions?
Thanking all in advance,
-Sotiris.

did you change music file associations recently to some 3rd party application? this bug is unresolved ever since WM5 AKU1 (i've had that with Wizard as well) - i.e. when you change *.mp3 file association to GSPlayer instead of default WMP, and then set mp3 file as ringtone, 'Windows Default' will always ring when incoming call comes. my solution was to convert ringtones into .wma file type, which is still associated with WMP and works as ringtone as well...

Thanks for your reply eva_d,
Well, I certainly did, but don't know if it's related, since 'OldPhone' is a WMA file. But, then again, maybe the .wma associations have changed as well?
BTW, while going through the registry settings in hope of finding something relevant, I did find that what I was hearing wasn't 'metal scraping', but just the 'doring.wav' in very high volume
Changed the setting in 'HKLM\Software\HTC\Phone\AlertingTone' to my preffered 'OldPhone.wma', rebooted, to no luck though...
And this ugly 'doring.wav' is still heard like metal scraping when loud. Of course, I could always rename my preffered tone to 'doring.wav', but this is almost as ugly a solution as the metal scraping
-s.

My iMate Jam won't ring

Hopefully someone can help me please. When I receive a phonecall, the phone no longer rings. If I put it to vibrate, that works OK. I have gone into the phone settings and played the ringtone so that's OK and the MP3 player functionallity is also working OK. When on a call everything is perfect. Even if I have the earpiece in, it still won't ring but again the earpiece is perfect while on a call. It would appear that something software wise has become screwed but I don't want to have to do a Hard Reset
I also use my PDA for Destinator v6 for GPS and mapping. It happily gives me my vocal directions.
I should also say that this has only just started happening in the last week or two. I did have to re-install my Destinator because it lost it's voice.
Can anyone help - PLEASE

Did you install a new rom? Hapened yesterday to me when I installed T-Mobile rom on my SPV M500
No. I running the same one for the past 6 months. Anyone else got any idea please/
Cormac
Hey Raven2000
Have you fixed the problem yet?
Cormac
I had a similar problem yesterday as well. I couldn't play any of my ringtones other than the windows default. (Try to see if the windows default ringtone works). My problem as far as I was concerned started after I installed xPad 2.1. Even after I deleted the program it would not work. I finally resorted to restoring from a backup which sorted it out. (I must start to schedule using xbackup on a weekly basis) Hope this helps.
I've had this exact same problem with my Magician - I bought mine as a T-Mobile MDA Compact, and am now running the BigStorage ROM. I have tested this in the past - running it as a "clean" system (no other apps at all installed, factory-shipped ROM) and it seems to work fine - but when you start installing software, the ringing function on the phone seems to stop working - and the only ringtone that still works is the annoyingly crappy "Windows Default" piano-tune ringtone. If anyone manages to work out why this is happening and a way to fix it, I would be most grateful! I am still working on a solution myself.
I'm now running ver 1.12 from iMate's website and have the ringing back again. I am tentitive about loading up too many programs so keeping it to a minimum for the moment.
As a matter of interest, did you ever load up an alarm clock program? I have re-installed most of what I had previously so I am wondering about this since it would be one of the only ones which would mess with the sound
C
Correction to my previous post. After installing one program at a time, I found it wasn't xPad but another program called iMusic.
Have You installed a media player?
this happened once to me when installed a media player that got associated with the WAV and MP3 extensions so the default internal player stopped working.
Hope this helps.
As soon as I removed file association for the new program my JAM started ringing again!
So did you have to edit the registry or was there some other way to remove the erronious association ?
Cormac
MP3 File Association
That happened to me too. Are you using MP3 patch so you can use MP3 as a ringtone? If so when you install a program that deals with MP3 it might change MP3 association to that program. Try re-setting MP3 association to File Manager and problem is solved.

Speaker 2 loud!

When I receive a call and put the phone to my ears, the speaker is too loud even set to minimum, Is there a hack that can adjust this?
If I put everything on speaker phone, the speaker is also too loud but not so anoying, but on the other hand people complain they don't hear me, so the mic
is set too low.
How can I modify this, help needed.

Why not just lower the volume. Better too loud than too soft... right?
The volume is set to minimum and is still shouts.
And I keep asking people to speak a little bit more quiet and thay say they speak normal.
So my speaker is ultra I suposse, but can I shut it up a bit?
Have exactly the same problem with all 3 M3100's that I've had. Is yours an M3100 too?
I notice that on hard reset, when the extended ROM is executed it runs an application called something like AdjustAcousticProperties. I wonder if this is doing it?

... whereas on the stock HTV Tytn, the volume is too low! If there's any way of extracting this AdjustAcousticProperties, it might be a real plus for us Tytn owners for whom the volume is too low.
Thanks!
Yes, mine is SPV M3100 too. I will look at the extended rom folder If I have that file.
Any solution?
The file would be great, thanks.
The only solution I can think of is a hard reset and an interrupt when the extROM cabs are loading (eg, don't let the AdjustAcousticProperties load)
Donno about you guys .. but my TyTN .. on speakers .. even with the lowest volume .. SEEMS WAY TOOOOOO LOUDD ...
Yes, on speakerphone, but we're talking about the earpiece volume here, I think...
PLEASE! if you can extract this file I'll like to try it out.
My earpiece of the tytn is SSSHHHIIIIITTTTEEE! its way to soft for me also.
I'm sorry your having the complete opposite problem that some of us are. I wish i could offer a solution for you but if you can offer a solution to some of us, that would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers and thanks
I can post the CAB's somewhere if somebody else would like to take a dig around inside of them?
[edit] Just realised the Orange Extended ROMs are on the site already -

I'm using a Vario II with the same problem.
With speakerphone turned on, even when it is set to the absolute minimum, the speaker screeches....it's that loud!

Hmm, can't see the CAB for AdjustAcousticProperties in the list anywhere, unless I'm being blind...
Anyone help? I'd love to increase the earpiece volume on my Tytn
I presume it's a .exe file buried inside one of the CABs. not sure how you go about decoding the contents of them though as all the files are renamed.
[edit] Just been looking around inside the CAB's using 'Wince cab manager' and nothing appears obvious. I'm sure I'm not dreaming... maybe the application is buried in there somewhere but the name isn't obvious as I have definitely seen it displaying something very close to 'SetAcousticParams' or 'AdjustAcousticProperties' during the execution of a contents of the extended ROM.
If I get time tomorrow I'll do a backup and then do a hard reset to check.
Andy.
Andy,
Great, many thanks!
Just did a hard reset - First thing it does when running the Extended ROM is at the bottom of the screen it says "Running SetAcousticParam.exe /Run..." which takes about a minute to run. Then when it installs the other CAB's you see "Installing ...... " at the bottom of the screen instead. Not sure where the exe is coming from now to be honest as it *doesn't* appear to be in the CAB's.
Andy.
Hmm, interesting. Don't suppose this file is buried somewhere in you windows folder heirarchy is it?
Thanks for helping out here!
Isnt there a reg key u can change the quality level and other things for speaker and speaker phone ,
I rememmber it on my htc wizard.
Hi!
I have totally opposite problem; my original handsfree is too quiet when listening music via Media Player. Every sound setting in the device is at maximum; Media Players volumebar is set to 100%, I scroll devices overall volume to max and slide that little knob at the HF to max. Yet it aint as loud as I would like to. And no, I´m not half deaf or such.
Allso while listening music without HF, I would like to have the device more louder.
Any hints about good 3rd party equalizer programs out there? Like such that the WinAmp (for Microsoft XP) EQ is.
Karzi, yes theres these regkeys which enables one to adjust the quality of the audio, but not it loundness. So I keep searching for programs what would allow to adjust even music loudness, ie equalizers. Anyone?

It *appears* to be... but I can't seem to find it. Found a script called preconfig.txt in \windows which seems to govern what happens on the first powerup after a hard reset, which contains the following:
LOCK:Enabled
EXEC:\Windows\SetAcousticParam.exe /Run
EXEC:\Windows\SetHSDPA.exe /Enable
EXEC:\Windows\cusTSK.exe \Windows\Orange2006.tsk
CAB: \Windows\MP_CVSDcpl_20060503.cab
CAB: \Windows\MP_MMS3.2_Hermes_OrangUKWWE_060601.CAB
XML: \Windows\PP_Cerfiticate.xml
XML: \Windows\PP_Generic_Conn_Setting.xml
XML: \Windows\PP_Generic_UI.xml
XML: \Windows\PP_Others_Conn_Setting.xml
XML: \Windows\PP_others_UXC.xml
Hide:Enabled
EXEC:\Extended_ROM\autorun.exe
LOCKisabled
RST: Reset
Looks like it does loads of stuff before it executes the extended ROM. Still can't find the exe though!

play mp3 ringtones from storage card ?

I have some mp3 files in my storage card.
I am aware of software line mRing , Ringo etc. but is it possible to use mp3 files as ringtone from Storage card WITHOUT using 3rd party software ?
Any registry settings to change the ringtone folder from main memory to storage card ?
also, whether or not the above is possible, what is the best mp3 ringtone solution WITH software ?
thanks...
Well I just realized something. But is this normal ?
If I put the mp3 files in the root directory or in a 1st level directory, I can see them in Ringo sotware and but I can't see them in default contact ringtone selection.
If I put them in a 2nd level directory I can't see them from Ringo and default ringtone selection screen.
If I put the files in root directory I can see them both in Ringo and default ringtone selection screen.
is this normal ?
If you search the forum, you'd find that you've found the answer to your question. Now if you need an explanation of the solution rather than the solution itself, please contact Microsoft.
hi,
so you mean it's normal behaviour ?
I don't need an explanation of the solution.
what I want is to be sure that I'm not doing something incorrect or I don't miss something.
btw, I had searched the forum before opening this thread. There are so many threads about mp3 ringtones.

Yes, and I'd be cautious anyway. Having ring tones especially anything not in a vanilla wmv or similar format can slow up time it takes for your phone to start ringing. In addition storing the file on storage card makes this delay even worse and finally can cause phone to crash on incoming call. Not saying this will happen to you but if it does you'll know why. Once you have it set up test out delay until first ring and response time from off/sleep.
Mike
well, I decided to use "mring" as ringtone manager on my Hermes.
I would just pay for this great application but I found a problem with Hermes.
If I use mring , I can't connect to my GPRS connection after disconnecting.
To re-connect to GPRS I need to reboot the Hermes.
This means I just have "one" time connection to GPRS (for each reboot of the device)
If I uninstall mring, this problem disappears and I can connect to GPRS each time I try.
So ,I think there is a conflict with mring and GPRS connections.
Can anyone confirm this ? Does this work for anyone ?
What else can I use as an alternative to "mring" ?
hey guys, I am really desperatly looking for ringtone managing software.
please advise...
You can also put them in "\storage card\My Documents\" and they'll show up in the default ringtone manager but as mikechannon said, it takes a while for the ringtones to load. Like it'll say incoming call, then ring 2 seconds or so later.
What i do is i put all my ringtones in "\Storage Card\My Documents\My Music\Ringtones\" and then just copy the one i want as a ringtone to "\Windows\Rings\" and when i want to change it, i'll remove the one i have there and replace it with another one i want.
well, that's a nice idea but mring was also adding features as "ringtone to contact/category/know caller/unknown caller" , "sms to contact/category/know caller/unknown caller"
it also has "vip" settings for contacts marked as vip and it has profile support like (discreet/loud/normal...)
I am also looking for such features which the OS itself does not include.
so I am still looking for alternatives to mring.
any idea ?

Ringtone and ".mid, .amr, .3gp, .mp4" files not working

Hi all,
I am using Elfin for past 4 months.
Earlier i used to put my own ringtones in folder "/Application Data/Sounds" and they worked.
But for past 1 month, no external ringtone put in "/Application Data/Sounds" is working. whenever i set my ringtone through Settings->Phne->Ring tone, it automatically sets it back to Ring-WindowsMobile.
I tried putting ringtones in /windows folder. but still i can only see those in Settings->Phne->Ring tone list and not able to set it.
somebody please help
------------------------
Whenever i try to open any ".mid", ".amr", ".3gp" or ".mp4" file, Windows media player open and displays error msg
"No Combination of intermediate filters could be found to make the connection"
'.mp3' and '.wmv' files play well in Windows media player
somebody please help

Hi Kaplesh Patil,
1. Did you install any new softwares in your device after which this issue came.
2. Did you check your .mp3, .amr, .3gp, .mp4 file extensions and properties.
3. How do your rip those file. Do you use any specific software to do it.
4. If possible can you attach one of your not working file.
Hi HDR87
1. I keep on installing softwares. so its difficult for me to guess after installing which software this problem has started
2.Did you check your .mp3, .amr, .3gp, .mp4 file extensions and properties
???? what do u mean by check, i mean how to check.
3. i usually rip .mp3 ringtones by SoundForge. but what i am saying is all same files used to work fine before. but now they have stopped working.
4. Even built-in (factory) .mid, .amr and .mp4 also not playing with WMP.
5. to aggravate my problem, now even built in ringtones like Ring-WindowsMobile have also stopped ringing
It sounds to me like you have something you installed that is causing conflict. You will have to try to figure out what it was that you installed- Try by trial and error remove an app you installed see if it works and so on. Start with apps that are related to the devices audio capabilities - I have read about several people having problems with SRS WOW application.
Note that if you installed an app that created a Registry change, it is possible that even uninstalling the app may not change the Registry values back to normal and if this is what has caused the problem than only a hard reset would work (unless you can figure out which Registry values you need to change and what you need to change the values to.
Sorry I can't be of much more help; however, if you figure out that it is a registry value change and you figure out which values need to be changed, just let us know which ones and we will check what our values are set at so you can make the changes manually.
@ hotrod101
I am currently exploring my registry... If i figure out the values to be modified, i will share here, so anybody having similar problem might be able to use it

Dude - you shouldn't be hijacking other peoples threads to ask your question. Use the Q&A Section and start your own thread or even better do some searching. This question has been asked before and even made it into the hall of shame.
To answer your question: If you are going to put a song or a long sound to message tone the whole song or tone will keep playing until it reaches it's end. (it's not like ringer wich is instructed to end as soon as you answer the call. Don't use a long tone or song. If you want to use a song, make sure you edit the song to make it just a short clip of it.

No Ringtone but calls come in and Phone Wakes

Weird one which has only come on in the last few days and I haven't installed anything that might have affected things.
Phone is set to "Ring" with a built-in ring tone (Old-Phone2) but when it doesn't ring when a call comes in. It wakes up, S2U2 shows the CallerID but it doesn't ring.
I have gone through sounds and notifications and it is set to "Phone, Incoming Call", "Ring", "Ring-OldPhone2", the speaker is on as I can hear other events. So, I set "Phone, Incoming Call", "Ring and Vibrate" and "OldPhone2" and it vibrates but no ringing.
Text messages and new email messages work but the ringing doesn't.
Is there anything else or anywhere else I should be looking to find out what might have caused this.
Stuff I have installed:
TomTom
SBSH Touch Calendar
PocketPlayer 4.0
HD Tweak
Diamond TF3D config
IContact
TCPMP
WAD2
Mobile TFL
psShutXP
SIP Change
SPB Weather
Plus some other stuff.
Thanks in advance
Anyone?
Please. I don't want to do a hard-reset and reinstall of everything
Thanks
this happens to when my hd fell from 3 feet to the concrete ground and the only way to get sound back was when i hard reset it.
Okay, this I think is because something has changed the association for .wma or .mp3 from Windows Media. This happens to a lot of us and I've never found a good solution. There are a couple of workarounds though.
First, set your default ringtone to a .wav file. That'll work, though if you reset you may need to re-associate that file to the default ringtone. Second, spring for something like Ringo which lets you assign ringtones to specific contacts. This will have a default setting which can in fact be assigned to a .wma or .mp3 file. It'll cost money though, unless there's a free one that I don't know about.
It's a really unbelievably annoying and stupid flaw in the design of the system. One learns to live with them.

The phone is set to a default .wav file and it still doesn't work.
Bummer, looks like a hard-reset.
Thanks
I have the same issue here. Just fall down from the car holder to center stack. Now even wav file for ringtone and alarm is not working.
Can the software or setting issue relate to the fall? Or this is the hardware problem??
If we do the SPB restore the setting or hard reset, can it be solved?
If you are using MSVC disable notification for incoming call. It causes the behaviour you described - all sounds work except incoming ringtone.
I had to hard-reset and then I re-installed one of Dutty's ROMs and it works a treat now. Can't work out why a drop should produce a software issue.
Regards
For Touch HD, try this! It solves at least for me now .
If you have HD tweak try to set the 'Ringtone' function in 'Call' to
'Vibrate and Ring', that's it. I never change this before but it switch to 'Vibrate only' for some reason.
Dunno after changing of the ringtone song in Windows mobile menu 'setting' to another, then it turn-off the sound even you select the 'Vibrate and Ring'
