Hi
Has anyone found a good wifi finder app for the wizard?

i second that... Wififofum is fantastic software! I use it all the time, i couple that with my gps reciever and then import all the open wifi spots to a map

Another great one is Kasuei Hitchhiker (freeware). It doesnt log GPS spots, but it WILL auto-connect to best level (more important to me).
http://www.kasuei.com/hitchhiker/

are you looking to connect, or just locate them??? if you are looking to connect to the hotspots, use the hitchhiker as posted by rubbercow, It is great software, but a little flaky at times.
I used to use wifigraph by the same developer as the hitchhiker, but the developer ceased development when he branched off to make hitchhiker.. It was great software that graphed the signal strength of the networks. It still works on older PPCs but it doesn't work with the wifi chip in the Wizard. I'm sure that if a liitle development was done on it, it would only take a few hours of work to update the database of compatible drivers for the software to use it on the wizard. I have reccomended doing so to the developer, but I understand people who write software in their spare time. They have a long list of things they want to get done but never the time to do it.

Anyone know of a wifi sniffer/snooper that'll work with Exec

Hi
I'm looking for a wifi sniffer/snooper similar to mini-stumbler that'll work with the wireless net card of the exec.
Ditto
I know
Try wiFiFoFum (google it I can't remember the link) its a very good sniffer which works on the exec AND supports GPS for wardriving. PS its also FREE
Socket Companion has released a WM 5. compliant WiFi application a few days back. You can have a go at that. Its not free btw.
Try Hitchhiker v0.32 works with WM5

Excellent software, it was on my list of "Things that I have installed on my IPAQ to try on the Exec".
URL is http://www.aspecto-software.com/WiFiFoFum/
Some other points about the software :- It does not use an installer or CAB so nice and easy, also, make sure you do not use it at the same time as your activestink (USB) connection as it will not pick any WiFi access points up! There should be no reason to change any of the settings in the program to get it to work first time and pick up a AP even if you are already connected to it. Accessing the GPS might be another matter, not tried yet.
For anyone that has not used it yet, try it, its as good, if not better than the "non free" software and yes, it will log the gps location when a AP was found to a file for later incorporating into a TomTom POI for example.
It has issues with landscape display (it doesnt flip) but apart from that the software is fantastic!
ok I've tried wififofum with my leadtec bt gps and it works just fine.
wifi doesn't seem quite as sensitive as the ipaq 3715 but I can live with that!
wififofum all the way!

Streethawk: War-driving

I found streethawk out on the modaco forums and was wondering if is a viable option over hitchhiker. Anyone know anything about compatibility with wm5? Usability?
doesn't work for me just says "waiting on WCZ to be free" forever and doesn't show any networks. (or was it WSZ? i can't remember)

Mine said the same, couldnt be arsed to try to get it working. Hitchhiker works perfectly for me.
Doesn't work here also.
Too bad....looked like a nice little app
Hitchiker always crashes after it's found the network for me. On an O2 mini s.
On my Qtek 9100 HitchHiker behaves strangely also. It usually finds half the APs WiFiFoFum does, and it NEVER connects. Also, on exiting it borks the PDA, and I have to manually remove it from memory to get things going again.
Is there anyone with a Qtek 9100 out there who has HitchHiker actually working and can suggest a reliable operating procedure?
Also, are there any other wardriving (WITH connecting feature) which actually work?
Well, I haven't tried Streethawk but it's disappointing that won't work.
I've had hitchiker running just fine on my wizard, though. I didn't do anything special but I exit just fine and while I only connect at my house it's able to do that just fine. I'll try doing a comparison sometime of the two war-drivers and see how many networks each gives me.
Couldnt get Hitchiker to work on my Wizard. Get a message about and error and the program has to close. This happens just after it has found an access point and tries to connect.
i find that WiFiFoFum works good for me, version 0.3.3.3 i think, if you go for the nicer looking version 2 then you have to install .net compact framework version 2 as well. plus if you connect a GPS unit then you can try and triangulate the signal
WiFiFoFum is great, but only to scan for APs. It doesn't have a simple way to select one of them and connect to it - or am I missing something?

No it's true - really annoying in a multiple network area if you want to hit a specific AP.
Yes sorry i forgot that, it doesnt allow you to connect, but i did find that it logs AP even if they have only got the WEAKEST signal or you only see it for a split second so you can then go in search. if im bored i go looking for AP's using WiFiFoFum and then try to connect using a combo of 'PockLan' which allows you to ping and search a range of an IP subnet and also map a drive of a share (the mapping is abit flacky) otherwise i use RescoExplorer to map the drive bacause its good at it.
Does anyone try and connect while wardriving or are you just looking?
P.S i am still looking for a good BlueJacking software for windows mobil, for symbian there are loads of good one like BTEXPLORer and SMan
Anyone know any? apart from 'smurf'

Wi-Fi auto switching

In the place I live there are too many available Wi-Fi connection and my device keeps switching from one to another! I can't use any wi-fi based application because it is always renovating the IP number thus making drop each connection. Is there a way to make dedicated connection to a single Wireless Lan?

There is likely to be a few ways to do this . I use an application called Hitchhiker. Mainly used to seek out Wifi hotspots and assist in connecting to them. But it has an option that lets you set up TRUSTED networks and will allow connection to them only. Can also be set to auto connect to first available trusted network. Handy when you are surrounded by networks. There is a link below. (you will also net the .net compact framework installed and there is a link for tis on the Hitchhiker page below)

Mike, you are one of the few people I've heard who have got hitcher to work OK ..... mine crashed ....but I am on An orbit / Artemis). Before I 100% Blame Hitchhicker, I also got an error message on installing .net 2 ... but otherwise seemed OK. I did a search on 'Hitchhiker' and .. got some VERY bad feedback - people having their systems trashed by it. So decided to uninstall both it and .net2.
to be safe.
Do you have ansy tips for a succesfull install and use ?
I feel the .net2 is an unhelpful overhead - a developer tool - not nec reliable (or for normal mortals ;-) ).
As an alternative I found pocketWinc ... which seems to offer much the same, without .net2, and (and the hype ?). I've not tried it yet but will let you know.
I'll be interested to hear how you get on with that app. As far as Hitchhiker goes - I did nothing special. I've installed .net and Hitchhiker twice and no problems each time - Except on both occasions hitchiker reported an error on first running until after a soft reset - after that no problems. Regarding .net - I installed it as a few apps. need it otherwise I do nothing with it. Some folks say it's memory greedy - perhaps it is but not giving me any probs.

Best wi-fi scanner software for TyTN?

I'm looking for some (inexpensive) software to detect wireless networks. Can anyone recommend a good scanning program for my Vario II?
Cheers.

I like Hitchhiker - scans and assists in connection to hotspots.
Also like Wififofum - has a nice radar type screen as an option or just lists networks and details. Does not connect to networks just shows them.
Both above require the .net cf framework 2 to be installed as well
Both are freeware

Sometimes Hitchhiker shows an error on very first start up but ignore it and possible soft reset and should be fine from then on.

The best WiFi scanner
I found this freeware on 8525software.com. Its called WiFiFoFum. I think this is what you're looking for. http://www.8525software.com/component/option,com_remository/Itemid,27/func,select/id,4/
WiFiFoFum is best
I've a collection of 18 wifi programs, i've tried all of them.
Hitchhiker is good, not invasive like WiFi Companion.
To capture Packets, Airscanner mobile sniffer is the best, but seems that promiscous mode doesn't work on hermes.

Even under wm5 it has a habit of giving this error at first installation. Worth a soft reset and retry.
Mike
has anybody managed to use Hitchhiker on WM6?
I just installed WM6 and for some reason hitch hiker will start, it will find a network, connect and then error and result in me having to do a soft reset.
this program is amazing and MUCH needed since i need to connect wirelessly anywhere i am.
is there a way to get this to work?
Hi, Im using WiFi Companion, howerver the WiFi signal reception is very weak as it shows only 1-2mbps, btw im connecting at my on LAN .

Sorry forget to mentioned that i have set the Wlan to "G" on my pocket PC but still no avail.
Hitchhiker on WM6?
Bt: the companion keeps low power on the wlan to save energy, so that's the reason you see only 1-2 mbps, just give more gear on the net and the speed will go higher.
Any news on Hitchhiker or another program with such functionality working well on WM6?? I don't think WFFF do such great job, does it try to connect and resolve net address once discovered a new network?

I don't have news on Hitch and WM6. But WFFF does not assist with the connection. Nice looking radar screen that can give true radar if GPS sotware is in use - other than that if it's something that provides a connection then WFFF is not the one for you. (Curiously a long time ago the developer did have an option to connect but abandoned the option for technical reasons).

SAP between phones?

I have had a kaiser for about a year. I just got a raphael. I am very impressed by the raph - everything about it is wonderful (well, 'cept the gps). I would like to use both.
Well, AT&T does not support multiple sims per plan - otherwise I could drop one in each phone, and have both to use.
So, here's what I see (in all cases with the SIM card on the raph):
1. set up wifi network sharing, connect to it via the kaiser. Still doesn't offer all functionality, but does let me use the internet.
2. Bluetooth pan internet sharing between the two. I'm not exactly sure how to set this up, though... it always gives me errors.
3. The ideal situation: SAP. If I could set it up so that the kaiser can think it has a SIM card, I would get all functionality on both sides, right? Is this possible? Would it be missing anything?
Some other thoughts:
1. is it possible to get just the GPS shared across bluetooth (use raph with kaiser's gps)? I'll figure out how to fix raph's gps eventually, but I see this as an interesting choice anyway.
2. what other profiles can I get working between the two?
I'd really like to see all of these things done in windows mobile - seeing as I only have one sd card for the moment, and it's for the raph. As soon as I fix that, I'll be more worried about leaving kaiser in android/other linuxes. Any ideas?
ATT's GPS runs via the data plan on my phone, so I tried what you're wanting to do and I had to pair the devices mapping the GPS on one of the unreserved COM ports, and on pairing enabled the outgoing COM, if you use Active Sync you should be familiar with the idea of mapping services through COM ports, on the 2nd phone that had the working data plan it would only show the shared gps service, but it wasn't called that port keys are named in the registry, and differ from phone to phone. So this isn't a pretty setup. I only got it working in google maps since you can define the gps settings manually. I would give specifics but I'm trying it with my old ppc where gps is on port 3, but has virtual serial ports mapped to 6 and 7. Again, get a good registry viewer/editor, port scanner etc so you can find out whats running where. I needed PAN to be enabled on the ppc for gps to work. I don't know if it's reporting exact locations or estimations etc. hopefully someone smarter than me can tell you.
You can get voice to work sort of, you can use handsets as headsets remotely just like any other bt headset, but thats all kind of pointless.
