Aside a much better GUI and user interface, the definite highlight is the Backup Facility.
I was Beta Tester.
Had Sprite, Spb BU and Sunnysoft BU purchased before.
SKTools beats all 3 of them by miles !
It is specially capable to also backup the PIM data and, very important for me at least, handles the Backup of the Ext ROM (which I use for storing programs) without flaws. The other 3 are just not able to cope with that in a reasonable fashion.
Well worth the money !
Cheers

Its strange - I have both sprite and sk and never used the sk backup utility. I was always very happy with sprite as it has saved my ass several times. I will have to check out the sk backup utility.

Thanks markyhedgehog - i am a big fan of sktools. You should change your subject title though to something like 'sktools update v3 beta available' as major improvements could mean anything

Wow this new version rocks - well done Sk software!

Wow, very nice indeed. SK has always been a "must have" if only for the uninstall utility alone.
Great new interface and love the benchmarking tools. Good to see my 247mhz KJAM out peform some "lesser" devices!

Does anybody know how to make it possible to view all the installed progs in Installed programs item? I see only a few of them.

Your problem of running slow is probably due to a MS Mobile 2003 bug My I-mate was running really slow.
Download this freeware (both of them), install them and run them. I had over 500 entries in the database which I cleared with the util and it went to 9 The speed of my Imate returned to normal.

Hope that helps....
Thanx drj bro! I had 830!!! Down to 11 after running app. My XDAII is running real smooth now. The second app says its only trial though....
Your welcome...glad it worked!
It will build up over time and as you soft reset. Just run the util every once and a while and all should be well.

Thanks from me too! I had my alarms fail, which made me oversleep, which could have been very embarrassing on any other night as the bands I drive rely on me getting them to the next gig on time.
I installed this freeware which seems to have (a) cleared a lot of unwanted dross & (b) sorted out my alarm problem (I think!)
I also use the very useful pocket alarm from Burr Oak Software, check it out here:-

My Australia i-Mate came with a whole bunch of Telstra customisations. I would actually like to get rid of these because they interfere with telephone functionality (e.g replaces caller ID with a telstra logo!).

Slow Performance, wrong storage, missing calc

Today I got a new MDA Compact (T-Mobile, German, Ext-ROM-Version: 1.01.125).
I synchronized about 1.500 contacts and the whole system went so slow, that I had to disable the contact synchronisation. Is that to much for the Magician?
It was no problem for my MDA II and MDA III.
Using the intellidialer is also awfull without any contacts. It needs more than one second to delete a dialed number.
Another annoing point is that the email attachements can only be outsourced to storage - not to the storagecard. Is that "normal" for the Magician?
Last but not least ist the calculator Missing. Its only the link and I could manage to make my own link to the calc.exe, but it seems that this software version is a bit buggy.
Do you have also problems like this?

If you installed all T-Mobile apps from Extended ROM, then you may run a bit short on RAM. Do a hard reset, and after you aligned the touchscreen, just before the MDAc starts installing programs, a soft reset. You will get a clean MDAc, and a freely accessible Extended ROM, from where you now can selectively install only those apps you really want.
Then try to install only those apps that are deeply connected to the system (mainly today plug-ins and stuff that gets launched automatically) into RAM, and all other apps to \Storage_Card.

If you mean the backspace button: this is due to the sound that is played every time you hit it. Disable the sounds for intellidialer, and backspacing will be much faster.

I do not know, but you can extend the Storage to 27MByte (not trivial, though), which should be big enough for a few attachments.

Is there a chance to set the path for storaage of mail attachements. Tweaking the "Storage" to a bigger sice may be a sollution, but I'd like to use my 512 MB storage card.
I looked mor than twice for the calculator. I inspected a second MDA Compact (also T-Mobile). The calculator was missing, too.
Bad Rom...
Hi MBastian,
looks like an Ösi could help you out of your calculator misery:
Go to your MDAs /Windows-directory (this can be done with the file explorer - opening the directory will take some time, as this is a biiiiig one). There should be a file named calc (with a lovely calc-icon :wink - that's your calculator!
So you should be able to make a shortcut wherever you want (start menu, programs folder, etc.).
HTH,
BGK

The shortcut I have is pointing to this target :

Open the email application. Go to Tools - Options. On the Storage tab you tick the box labelled "Store attachments on storage card". Done.
@BGK: Thanks for the Tip. I allready linked the Calc.exe. I was just wonderung, how buggy the new Rom is,
@Bamse: The problem is, that this option only allows to store the attachements at "storage" not "storage card". That sucks.
Buggy Rom...
Interesting, that german and austrian T-Mobile ROMs differ that much.
I'm using the original austrian T-Mobile ROM with which the device was delivered and haven't had any problems with it wheras I often read of problems with other buggy roms (lousy phone sound, etc.).
Although they have the same version number, they obviously differ in other ways except the language too. Strange, but true...
Greetings,
BGK
P.S.: ...but you're right - M$ calculator s*cks. They never enhanced that since their early versions of Windows CE (had most of them)...

SMS Notifier released – a great application for PPCPE users!

Finnish Aali Alikoski, Academic Developer Evangelist of Microsoft Finland, has just released a highly useful application, SMS Notifier, along with its source code.
The application offers some really nice and, up to now, to my knowledge, on the Pocket PC Phone Edition platform, unprecedenced functionality: it waits for unanswered incoming calls and, depending on the configuration settings, it either sends an SMS message to the caller (with configurable contents), possibly containing also the end time of current appointment (this is also configurable) or adds an item to the system-level Windows Mobile calendar (containing the caller info).
The latter functionality is nothing new – you can check the caller's identity and the call date/time in any low-end mobile phone. The former – that is, the SMS feedback –, however, is really long-awaited!
Downloading and Installation
You can download the application here. Transfer the CAB file to your PDA and execute it there.
If, after installing and upon starting SMS Notifier, you're presented this error message, make sure you download and install .NET CF 2.0 from Microsoft. Make sure you install it in the main memory. Also note that, as the application heavily relies on the new, connectivity/database-related libraries of .NET CF2, it's not very easy to port it to run under the earlier Compact Framework library. (For CAB lovers, you will only need c:\Program Files\ Microsoft.NET\SDK\CompactFramework\ v2.0\WindowsCE\wce500\armv4i\NETCFv2.wm.armv4i.cab ; you can also download it from here (to avoid having to download the 24 Mbyte-long MSI installer).
Configuration
On the main set-up screen, there're some checkboxes in AND relationship. The first one, Send SMS to unanswered callers, instructs the application to send an SMS to everybody that tries to call you but his or her calls remain unanswered. Using (not disabling) the second two checkboxes, however, you may make the application not send a SMS to anyone that calls you, just to the ones that call you during an active/busy appointment.
The checkbox/text input area at the bottom makes it possible to report the end of the current appointment so that he or she can know when you are reachable again.
The Calendar tab contains only one checbox, which instructs the application to enter all the incoming calls into Calendar.
Note that the configuration settings are not correctly saved/restored, as the author also points out.
Usage
To use the application, just start and configure it to your liking. Do not click the Quit button – then, it won't send your callers any SMS. Just let it run. You can, of course, suspend the PDA while you do so and also minimize the application. This also means you can safely start it from \Windows\Startup (just like the other highly recommended application, PMRecorder – please see this article on it if interested) – if it's running in the background, it'll safely catch all unanswered calls.
Other stuff
I also recommend the author's blog here. Don't be taken aback of some of the material's being in Finnish: there's nothing really interesting in them for non-Finns (the Finnish blog posts are only about local, Finnish meetings, conferences). Unfortunately, some of the other Finnish .NET bloggers (see the links in the lower left of the page) post exclusively in Finnish, even highly technical stuff that would be interesting for non-Finnish speakers too. (Feel free to ask me in my blog for a public translation for some of them if really interested.)
thanx man .. jus tried it . this application actually works .rockinnn

I've encountered the same when I first tried to install it on a storage card. Then, subsequent installs to the main memory didn't succeed either. A hard reset helped.
I have installed it and it seems to work well. My only concern is that it seems to use the notification application of the phone rather than the call list of the phone. The reason I say this is because it puts a calendar entry in when I miss a call then adds another entry when I check the notification of missed calls.
is this what is supposed to happen? would it send 2 text messages in this case (when the call comes in and when I check the notification that the call did come in)?
thanks,
Edwin
also, it seems if I am on the phone when I miss a call it uses the name of the person I was on the phone with and not the person I missed.
Ruttensoft also has a similar program call minder - works well but not as many features as above program but you don't need NET thing - hate those addons

Here it is...
... moved into the first post
does this work with WM5?
Installed on Qtek 9100 WM 5. It works perfectly.
The only defects are:
When it is exited from the program loses the formulations of the English language and the dimension of the font.
Is not possible to set up the order of reading of the contacts 1°/2° or 2°/1° name.

About configuration(lang, font...): I dont know how program works on WM5. I'll try to correct it as soon as possible and i will add order of reading ( <FN MN LN> and <LN, FN> ).
thanks CDK. ill post it on my blog http://oldsap.blogspot.com
Great job - really. I love it. it works perfectly on my QTEK9100 as posted already. This is one tool which will replace the built in contacts.
Some more suggestions and hints:
- Program loading lasts very long - maybe it is decreasable??
- If i write a name the tool greps for all matches in the first and the last name. That is great. I love it. Is it possible to search also in the middle of the string. Example: Alex and i type lex
- Is it possible to grep not only first and last name but also the other fields which are defined in the Pocket Outlook Object model?
- Is it possible to have more search boxes or filter for the categories?
- Maybe it is possible to have a WM05 compile where for example a context menu pops up with all the selectable categories
- The russian/english problem posted already is also on my device
A lot of requests. Let me know if you find some useful.
Thanx anyway for this great app.
how do you install this? just copy all the files into a folder and run?

Ok. I give some explanation. This program is written for my request and with my collaboration. That's why i try to answer some questions and I will post, sometimes, new release.
1. This is .NET :-( Here is a "hide"-feature added to solve (temporary) this problem. I think F.T.D. post here the source code as soon as possible. May be someone rewrite this on native C.
2. May be. But this may be unusable with huge contacts lists...
3 & 4. Describe, please, what you want to see. Perhaps this will be added in the hext releases.
5. ... requires WM5 device... :-(
6. This is corrected and will be posted today (if we understand the problem correctly)

First steps with a Touch Diamond 2

Hi people,
I have just got my new Touch Diamond 2 and it's beautiful. I have spent several days googling looking for the best place of expertese for tweaking and customising, and it seems this is the place. I have never owned a Windows Mobile device or a HTC before, but I'm PC savvy and I want to tweak my new phone.
Among other things, I want to:
Be sure my phone uses Wifi when available instead of contract internet
Tweak the TouchFLO home screen (including analogue clock and RSS)
Find a list of the best and/or most popular mods/software
Where do I start and what do I need!
Congratz
As I've heard and noticed from my own TD2 is that it always uses wifi over data. But if you really want to be sure you can disable Data Connection in the Communication tab whenever you want to surf.
You can also in All Settings => Personal => Buttons configure that long hold button disables Data Connection.
As for tweaking I would download Diamond Tweak and Advanced Config
http://www.touchxperience.com/en/advanced-configuration-tool/downloads.html
http://montecristoff.webs.com/diamondtweak.htm
First law of windows mobile: keep the internal disk clean!
Install every new piece of software on the memory card.
For my TD2 I got a 16Gb microSD card and started with Advanced Configuration Tool v3.3 to tweak all storage-related paths to folders I created on the memory card.
A good place to start looking for tools is freewarepocketpc.net. A lot of more than decent free applications. The ones you don't like can always be removed in settings/system/remove programs, and replaced by commercial tools.
I disagree.. I used to install everything on the external card; and found two major disadvantages:
- some app will run a lot slower!
- if you use your sd card to store music video and other stuff
you better not have to change it...
I m more inclined to install less apps that filling the memory card with it.
The main use I have for the memory card is to store backups, documents, music, and install cab files.

Yeah I saw those button settings but couldn't work out what they meant. What is this long hold button? Is it the dial button that if you hold puts it on speaker phone? And how would you configure it for disabling a data connection, I don't see and option that would allow this?
I have seen that freewarepocketpc website, and had a snoop around. I have an 8Gb card coming today (hopefully!) and I was waiting to get that to install software on it. I read that might slow down some apps, now I'm not so sure what to do. However I want to avoid installing a load of software to try it out, then uninstalling it. It is windows after all. That's why I wanted some recommended software from people on here.
Question: Will that configuration tool allow tweaking of the TouchFLO stuff? Has anyone changed the clock on the TouchFLO Home page thingy?
Thanks all for your help
You have to chose the tab "End Key" under the Button setting menu and then chose the "terminate data connection" option
Ahh I get it now, had a look at those keys thanks. Going to use Advanced Configuration Tool when I get my memory card (still not here yet!)
The best single piece of advice I can give any TD2 owner is to ditch TF3D and at least try living without it. Your rewards will be more available memory, faster operation, increased functionality, full use of applications' today screen plugins, less (or no) bugs, and the cost is it doesn't look as nice.
In a couple of months' time, WM6.5 will be out and then even the looks will be there.
After much research I have ditched TouchFLO and got SPB Mobile Shell 3. I keep hearing about bugs but I am yet to encounter one. I have to say that SPB Mobile Shell 3 is what I would have expected to have on a phone like this. TouchFLO looks good, and I have a friend that loves it, but you can't customise it very easily. Simply having the widgets in SPB Mobile SHell 3 makes it a better, mnore customisable and quicker interface.
I currently have Total Commander as an explorer replacement. I'm not sure if this is the best, but I have yet had time to do proper research. It's supposed to have a registry editor in there, but for the life of me I can't find it :/
Had some serious fun with video playback. I wanted to play full quality (not HD) dix files, DVD rips and the like. After much fun with different software I found that Coreplayer blows everything out of the water. My expectations had dropped about what I might be able to watch on my phone after having problems with other media players, but Coreplayer can play full movie DVD rips with no stuttering and it looks awesome.
Still some fun to be had tweaking, for example finding out if/how java stuff will work, trying to find something for email/sms, and some "cool" apps to impress my gran.
I'm no expert but purely from personal experience the first steps are:
1) Install Resco Explorer
http://www.resco.net/pocketpc/explorer/default.asp
2) Install HTC hotfix for Diamond 2
(http://www.htc.com/uk/SupportDownload.aspx?p_id=249&cat=0&dl_id=563)
3) Install .NET Framework 3.5 (requirement for a bunch of 3rd party software)
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...FD-AE52-4E35-B531-508D977D32A6&displaylang=en
4) Install SKTools (needed for many things but especially for next step)
http://www.s-k-tools.com/index.html?m_products.html#tools
5) Use SKTools to disable ActiveSync (results in huge improvement of battery duration)
5a) Disable the repllog.exe (which is the application behind ActiveSync) associated with ""AppRunAfterTimeChange"" in Notifications Queue
Alternative way is to install Dotfred's Task manager and kill repllog.exe: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=3175757&postcount=50
5b) Follow the steps 1-7 in the thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=288352
5c) Install eLiAs_ASyncKiller.cab
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=3048077&postcount=40
6) Install HDTweak for various tweaks (eg for improvement of TouchFlo response)
7) Install sdkcerts (needed for "cosmetic" interventions eg Hall Feica fonts in TouchFlo, slpashscreens, topbar etc)

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=3661976&postcount=80
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=3861405&postcount=2
8) Install Diamond D3D Video drivers using the first attachment from:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=475493&highlight=ATI+3d+driver
Before installation download and run the fourth attachment (Lights.exe)
Install the drivers and then run Lights.exe again to see the huge improvement
9) Install G-Config (for forcing applications to go into landscape mode)

10) Enjoy your Topaz
P.S.: Backup your Contacts, Calendar etc frequently

You may think you are not an expert but your post is very useful (and very well formatted).
Thanks
The hotfix is only required if you run TF3D right?
nice guidelines dude.. thanks

According to htc europe:
If you move to the Settings tab in TouchFLO, the top part of the item descriptions under Communications (WiFi, Bluetooth, phone, data) are slightly cut off. If this happens, please download this hotfix to solve the problem.
So I think the answer is yes
Oops I forgot the very useful CleanRAM from htcaddicts:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=514333
I use its embedded scheduler so it runs automatically every 3 hours claiming back megabytes of RAM
Mark it as step 11

Double click on "\\Plugins" and you'll reach the hidden options including the registry editor. I've been using Total Commander for years on various ppcs, it's all you need for registry work.

Hiya, great post~!
I have the Diamond2 as well... wouldn't I want to install 'Diamond Tweak' instead of 'HD Tweak'? Are they essentially the same thing, or does HD Tweak offer more functionality for the Diamond2?
Cheers,
Diamond Tweak is for the older version of TouchFlo, use HD Tweak.
