I'm currently using the Orange.tsk theme (which btw is brill) and the background to the softkey bar is black, the text itself is Orange. Not sure of the relationship as I've never attempted to make a WM5 theme.

Note that this affects not only the soft key labels but also any 'old style' menus such as you can see in Start > Help. So you may also have to adjust "Color_CommandBar" to retain contract with those.
Yeah the Orange theme makes TCPMP look a bit odd but I manage with the hardkey shortcuts.

If you want, try Tweakes2k2. It has a slider for all the color hues... Easier to use... Maybe
VJBaseHue has nothing to do with the color of the soft key texts
Darn, how blind of me, sorry... Tweakes2k2 has some font color changing like start menu, today bar, top bar, etc. but i don't know if it applies to the softbar....
I have a dutch HTC P4350 and I hate the green today theme.
But when I change the today theme, the device asks for a soft reser and when its again up and running the dailer skin has disappeared.
I only have grey buttons which are ugly (imho).
Has anybody this problem?
Can it be fixed?
I was thinking that the problem is a invalid link in the registry to the default dailer theme because when I restore the original htc green today theme, also the dailer is restored (after a soft reset.)
Can someone help me???

I have this problem also. I have tried two hard resets and nothing works.
Can't say I've ever used the skin, so don't know what it's doing, but the long way around might be to get the .tsk file (the theme) and decompile it with WinCE Cab manager to see what registry settings it's changing.
Then just ensure that those registry keys stay as they should after changing the theme.

Hmm, decompiling the tsk file, seems to be difficult.
I spoke to HTC support, but they don't know the problem exist.
Think it's a bug in the rom or ext rom because I have no problem with my HTC P3600.

On my HTC Herald (p4350) the Smart Dialer Application skin has a light gray background and the text (caller/callee, elapsed time, etc.) is in white and therefore barely readable.
I changed the following key
HKLM/Software/HTC/?PhoneCanvas/Task0
in that I changed the value of the REG_DWORDs
DIALER/portrait/text:textColor
DIALER/landscape/text:textColor
from their default value FFFFFF (hex) to 000000 (hex). That changed the color of the text from white to black in both orientation modes (after soft reset).
I tried it on my brand new device and dont have this problem. I changed to the standard windows theme and I got a grey dialerskin (with smart dialing working)
Smart Dialing
I had a problem with the HTC Dialler skin disabling the smart dialling. After reading many forums i gave up on trying to get that particular skin working and opted for one of these http://www.zombienexus.net/portal/GH_ShowArticle.asp?HID=35&CATID=1|2|3|4|5|6|7|8|9|10|11|12 The black skin is a little too black for my liking and was overriding the "HTC new theme". I just changed to another theme and back again and hey presto, colour scheme as I wanted it AND my smart dialler working. Haven't looked at the memory usage yet but seems to work fine after the initial wait on first use.

I stopped using the HTC Diamond dialer after I found out that it uses 10MB of memory (8MB on some improved ROMs like SwiftBL) at all times and is partly responsible for the device's laggy dialer performance.
The default WM dialer is an ugly grey but after finding this thread about QVGA skins I decided to make my own black skin. I'd like to thank the starter of that thread, Raceit, for helping me to get started with the image files and trying to fix them for me. Cheers dude!
I don't know how to make CABs yet so here's a zip. (EDIT: CAB available in post #3.) The orange colouring in the screenshots was part of my theme, not part of the skin.
To install, first disable the HTC dialer, see post #2 for more details.
If you would like to install the black 3D skin pictured below, the easiest method is to install the CAB provided by mic_888 in post #3. If you plan to use another skin that doesn't have a CAB then I advise installing the CAB anyway, then copying the images files from the ZIP archive into the Windows folder. There are 2 advantages of installing a CAB - firstly so that the image files are unprotected and easier to overwrite and secondly to make uninstallation easier. Just uninstall the CAB to remove whatever skin you are using and revert to standard the standard WM grey skin.
Hint: The Matrix, Flat Black and Sunset skins in this thread feature transparent buttons with different edge colours, feel free to use them with your own backgrounds. It's just a case of replacing the two png images with your own choice of portrait/landscape images

Information about using the standard WM dialer
The main drawback of the standard WM dialer is that you cannot use it for video calling. Not an issue for me personally.
The advantages are that it saves almost 10MB of memory, even on ROMs with an optimized dialer, and gets rid of that slight lag when making or answering a call when you're not sure if it's actually going to do anything. A further benefit is that the answer and reject keys are much more difficult to press accidentally, removing the need for an additional locking program (Answerkeys Disabler, TouchLockPro, S2U2, etc.)
The HTC dialer can be disabled using DiamondTweak or Schaps Advanced Configuration Tool. You must also disable the HTC Volume Control if you wish to be able to adjust the volume in-call. The only working method that I know of is to use this CAB here.
Edit: It turns out that disabling the HTC dialer also loses the Bluetooth icon in the taskbar. I had a quick google and found this solution. I've tested it and it works fine on my Diamond. File attached below for convenience.
Edit 2: The developers of the bluetooth icon app have released a new version that's more compatible with VGA! See below.

Any idea how to undo disable HTC volume control if I plan to go back to default HTC dialer?
Is the cab changing some registry settings?

No you need to disable the HTC dialer and volume control too. See post #2 for details. I don't know enough about the differences in the sprint but I expect so.

I don't really know what that cab does. Have you tried uninstalling from remove programs then soft-resetting?

But, as I use skilty's TF3D Matrix theme with it's skinned dialer, I'd like to request a Matrix WM dialer skin, please. For personal use and to share it in the Matrix Trilogy theme resource thread.
Maybe you want to have a go at it? It would be great if you could design one with 'real' 1234567890 digits. Perhaps from one of the free Matrix fonts.. And it would be bonus if you could design another skin with 'actual' Matrix font digits, like these.
Or maybe you can just use skilty's dialer artwork? I could ask skilty. Anyway, TIA!

News flash!
The Matrix trilogy ended, lamely, 5 years ago!
I think it might be easiest to use transparent buttons with a simple green border so that the matrix background image is seen through the buttons. I'll see what I can come up with, unless you'd like to have a go?

Hi all,
Is anyone able to develope a Dialer skin that increases the numeric button sizes, There is a big bar of space at the top of the dialer that could be used for the other buttons we use, Or can we remove the call history list to increase the buttons?

I'm sure it is possible but that would involve replacing or editing the dialer software, not just the skin. The standard software has a fixed layout and we can replace the images used but not change their size or position.
It might be worth looking around for an alternative dialer...

I am using the T-Mobile (USA) MDA (HTC Wizard), with the last official T-Mobile (2.26?) ROM, WM5.
I downloaded and installed a third-party dialpad skin, Zombie carbon QVGA (http://www.zombienexus.net/portal/GL_Display.asp?SEC=3&EntryID=464)
It looks cool, better than the T-Mobile skin for sure, or default Windows. Easier to read, with white text on black background.
Except for one problem:
The numbers are not on the buttons! They are far to the right, and a little down, of where they should be. They are actually closer to the next button to the right, than to the one they are supposed to sit on.
Can anyone tell me how to fix that? Something in the registry? Why are the numbers not lined up on the buttons?
How can I move the numbers far to the left, and a little up, so they are centered on the buttons?
P.S. I would have posted this to a forum at the Zombieskin site, but I don't see a forum there. And I have seen posts about these skins on this site, so I'm asking here. Hopefully someone here will know something about using these alternative dialpad skins.

Well, grey because, imho, that fits best with the HTC Black theme. But that might be personal.
You must change all the assotiated manilla files that are related to the highlight color. Go to the Touch HD forum and find a change the selected color cab to your liking that will do the trick for you the highlighter color manila files are the same for both phones so no conflict. but DO NOT try running a full theme from the HD as it will not work properly.
Unfortunately the dailer will not change with that fix tho as I am still looking into this myself the dialer on the Rhodium is being a bit stubborn to allow me to skin it fully.

This quote seems to indicate there may be a utility for some phones to do it for me. I hate the stock green but don't want to re-rom the entire phone just to get orange or other coloured highlights. I searched "change color cab" here and found only this thread.
Is there a Pro2 utility?
using ur registry will be too much just to change the color or your themes. why dont you use basehue much faster and better with multi selections. all you do is extract the folder and move the basehue.exe file to \windows\start menu folder and your good.

Good question, it might not work for the tf3d today screen because of the manila files but either than that it should be good to go!

You are correct, I did not notice the changes because they are only in Windows menus etc...
Unfortunately no changes to TF3D at all, which is what I was hoping to do

These files are all PNG files embedded within your manila files.
These must be first extracted / edited / replaced back into manila and then copied back to your \windows dir.
copy \windows\*_manila to your pc (they are system and hidden so use Resco Explorer or similar
Look for CFC on here..and download it.
Run CFC / explore to your manila backup dir.
now scroll till you find your culrpit files..and extract
edit the file in a paint prog of your choice.
back to cfc
choose replace.
choose edited file.
and then exit cfc
once done... you sort all your manila files by date and you will find the manila files you edited.
copy first to your wm device \temp
then use resco explorer on device to copy from \temp to \windows
replace and reboot your device
all is done.
