Prophet camera worse since dopod ROM update - JAMin, XDA Neo, S200 General

Hi,
I had an german o2 XDA NEO, and for one day played with the original settings.
At the time I thought the camera worked very well, and didnt think much of it.
After upgrading to dopod ROM via crossvendor thread, I get the feeling the camera is worse. When I'm in 'shooting' mode, looking through the 'viewfinder' everthing is VERY VERY blurry.
I'm sure it wasn't so bad with the o2 image.
Anyone else had the same expierence?
Thanks.

Forgot to switch back from macro-mode?
The neo has the macro-mode ring on the lens as all other Prophet models? You didn't leave it on macro by any chance . . . ?

I wish it were that easy. The refresh rate of the screen just seems so slowwww, so everything takes a while to become clear. It's just wierd.... :?

Yes, I too have experienced this very blurry and laggy response from the camera since having switched to the same Dopod ROM from Oranges M600 ROM. Additionally, the images seem to be more specled with blue dots. Not the case before! I hope someone will release a camera patch/update to solve this problem, as I was very happy with the photo quality before.
However, having said that, I wouldn't switch back to my old Orange ROM, as this novendor id ROM from Dopod is great in every other way!

Have you experimented with the camera settings? Maybe the new ROM has different default values.

Yep, just adjusted the settings in various ways and different ambient settings and took pictures of the same room with the same light exposure etc. Definately degraded photo quality. Looks more like 1.3 megpixels as opposed to 2MP! I'm seriously dissapointed as I use the camera quite often, but would not trade the features of a PPC phone for a dedicated cam/phone like Sony Ericsson.
On the Orange ROM, I must admit, the pictures were not at all far behind that of my old SE K750i, an IMHO even more impressive in macro mode.
Anyway it looks like the old HTC camera software offering of the older devices and they usually got a camera patch to improve things, so I'll keep my fingers crossed. :wink:
HTC Prophet (was an Orange M600)
Sim unlocked (using Lokiwiz03 - now using o2 Sim)
ROM version: 2.15.13.27 WWE
ROM date: 3/9/06
Radio version: 02.19.21
Protocol version: 4.1.13.09
ExtROM version: 2.15.13.121

Camera settings need changing on Dopod ROM
Ok have been testing some more and for those of you who need your photos to look half decent or even good on with the new Dopod ROM only, try these settings within viewfinder mode :Tools/adjust
Contrast = 4
Brightness = 4
Saturation = 4
Hue = 5
Sharpness = 6
These settings have made quite an improvement on the photo quality resulting in noversaturated pictures and extreming 'whiting' caused by too much brightness and contrast. Lastly the sharpness invrease value of 1 to 6 from the default 5 has also improved picture quality for me.
Hope this helps someone else too.

Photo got worse after upgrading "Photo Enhancement ROM

Anybody experienced this problem? I need help! When I first got the XDA II MINI, the 1.3 mp pictures are quite ok considering a phone cam. After upgrading the camera ROM upgrade from seeo2.com, the 1.3 mp pictures got many obvious white spots, but the rest pixels pictures are fine...very weird !
Very strong sharpening might result in white pixels at edges. Thats an artifact of (too strong) sharpening and can be avoided by less strong sharpening.
Try a lower value at your sharpness setting.

Very good tip for me...changing the sharpness. Isnt it ironic that O2 actually made this ROM to enhance the sharpness, but when sharpness is enhanced to a new level at a capibility to "Sharpness value=15", the white spots is caused by it? Anyways, you saved me from flashing the original rom...I have almost done that! thx again!
XDAII Mini
Is this camera patch applicable / usable to the XDAII Mini?
Yes the patch works on the XDAII mini as well. It's a cab file that you can isntall on any Magician.
I didn't like this patch at all. I found the quality to be much worse after installing the upgrade, especially in night mode. Decreasing the sharpness to 5 still doesn't give the same quality as before.
When I get mine back from repair (broken external speaker :-( ), I will certainly NOT install the patch!

XDA2i Camera worse than XDAII?

Even though the XDAIIi cam is 1.3mp the images it produces are awfull!
The upgrade from 0.3mp to 1.3mp is a big selling point for this device, and some people are making the upgrade based on this alone!
Ive taken a couple of pics for you guys to compare.
Any confirmations or comments are welcome!

OK bro!
From the 3 photos posted the one by XDA II is definitely the best.
Have you make sure the XDA IIi got its best setting for the resolution concerned like its ambience, contrast, saturation, gamma and sharpness?
I would like to upgarde to IIi if its available in my country but now I have second thought after seeing its camera capability. I hope when it's release it would have the camera issue resolved.
Well, it looks worse but it may just be your brightness, contrast, etc..
Hey, BTW, when did XDAII start taking photos at 480x960? Mine can only do 480X640 no matter how I tweak the settings... Did I miss something?

Well spotted!
No, that was my mistake it was only 480x640.
Thanks for the feedback guys.
I have tinkered with the settings somewhat, I tried to match them before taking the shots and have tinkered with the XDAIIi settings alone to try and improve it aswell, however no luck.
There is a 'night' settings on the IIi although it makes the pics even worse, and has white flecks all over the image!
It's such a shame, WM2003 SE is great! Integrated WiFi is awesome!
This cam really lets it down though.
I've finally made my decision:
Mines going back. It just doesn't cut it.
So then, how long before the next WM device from O2?
And what can we expect?
upgrade the ROM and see~
Have U ungrade ur ROm to i-mate's latest ROm? I realize that the camera's "nightmode" indeed remove those white flecks. But I admit my xdaII's camera (WM2003SE download from xda-developer) is nicer than the original PDA2's camera
On my PDA2,I reckon the resolution is much higher; it's hard to tell on computer screen but once U magifiy it (ZOOM in) then U will find L is L (640x480) and why we need XL 1024x640
The next concern: anyone know any patch or .cab to improve the camera spec in order to get better quality of pic? cheers~
...
The quality very depends on the settings and adjustments. I took 5 pics(3 indoor,2 outdoor)with my Himalaya(VGA Cam). There are too many differences which causes the adjustments. Take a look...

What settings for camera ?

Had my Exec for a week now. Love it
Wondered what settings you guys use for camera as the results I am getting are very poor.
Similar to what I got from my I-mate Jam before they released the camers patch.Do you think it is a hardware issue or software ?
Cheers
Paul
My camera is about a billion times better than my Jam was, and I haven't changed my JJ's default settings. I assume the Exec will be the same defaults....
Contrast: 5
Brightness: 4
Saturation: 4
Hue: 5
Sharpness: 5
I have tried changing all the default settings ,get little or generally no improvement.
This is exactlly the same problem I had with the Jam until it was patched !!
I'm afraid I'm at a loss, like I say my JasJar photos are extremely good compared to my old Jam, even after the Jam had the updated software installed.
Maybe it is a hardware issue you have? Can anyone else back me up here? Or are other people finding that their pictures are of poor quality, too?
I'll try and find something decent to take a test photo of to compare, but I'm in the office at the moment, which is very uninspiring!
Since my JJ is my first PDA with a camera it's hard for me to compare and certainly it's not fair to compare it to my digital camera. I will say though that I've been pleasantly surprised by the quality and believe now that I'll use the camera more than I originally thought I might.
If the JJ had also been offered with a non-camera version I likely would have bought that one, but now I'm glad that I didn't have that choice. It's nice having a camera available any time without carrying around another piece of equipment.
As for settings, I haven't done a lot of playing around with them but I have noticed that to take just about anything indoors the general "night" setting works best for me. The others just seem to grainy. (Of course maybe I just need more light in my house!) Without any other tweaking though, "night" ends up working as an indoor setting.

Using the camera and getting good photos

I have done a search but can't really find much on the camera settings. I am struggling to get good photos using the MDA Vario 2. I used to get great ones with my MDA III.
Can anyone advise me on which settings will get me a half decent photo. I am not a camera buff and just want to use it generally a bit more not that my digital camera has died. I just cant seem to get it right?
thanks
Same here - with my Vadafone - picture quality was better on my Nokia 6600 mobile - is there a better application out there that take better qulity photos for the device?

I agree with you. Good pictures are possible. Some folks like to tweak the brightness and contrast, although I find the base settings ok. But I wouldn't try taking good photos in dark/semi dark conditions - it's not good. The Macro along with flash works ok at night for really close up stuff but the flash is of little use for distance pitures at night.
In good light it's really pretty good at 1 and 2 megapixel setting. Keep in mind the pictures at this definition also appear much better when transferred to your PC. I can get a full 17 inch screen size with little or no pixelation at 2 megapixels and also clearer and brighter than it appears on the Hermes screen.

@mobilecat
I'm really disappointed with the tytn's camera - i have an Orange M3100 version.
Try changing the sharpness and contrast settings both to 1.
It seems to be a fault that they are factory set at +7 and +6, ruining your chance of getting a good photo. Much better set as 1, especially the sharpness as it will otherwise draw a bold line around the detail. Unfortunately a restart resets to default.
Not sure about the T-Mobile version but the Orange version also will not take pics on the 2M superfine settings in most light conditions, you either get a blank pic or the camera app crashes and needs a restart.
I do love the tytn, just disappointed with the camera app, I have to mess about more with this than I do with my Canon SLR!
I'm not saying this is the case with all tytns, but the 3 I have had and the 2 others I have handled (all orange spv M3100) all suffer from the same issues.

I agree it's annoying it loses the tweaked settings you enter. BUT have you seen Sutheeps examples using his link - they're great!!

Hi, I just downloaded the CoolCamera app, pushed the settings to max and snapped away; no crashes, no blank pics. Can't test this properly until daylight but this does look hopeful.
Agreed, Mike, I do admit that I have got a handful of very decent pics but I generally stopped using the camera as many more crashes and I'm sure I would have ended up throwing the tytn at the subject!
Fingers crossed, this coolcamera might be the end of the only gripe I have. I'm sure the problem is something to do with the Orange software.

How's it been working out for you?
Anybody know where to find CoolCamera? www.ateksoft.com isn't a good url now.
@berdinkerdickle
as an update,
I'm still more than happy with the results using CoolCamera, I do occasionally get crossover on my images: the edge of a pic has a thin border on one side of the previous image. I do rarely get blank images when set to maximum quality. The interface, IMO can be a little complicated but once used to it, I like the extended settings options. The standard app on the m3100, for me, is not worth turning on: constant crashes and blank pics every time it's used. I know this is probably a fault with the Orange firmware, or maybe just my handset but the previous 2 units were the same.
I have had some fabulous, impressive results from using coolcamera in half-decent lighting conditions, without it I simply would not use the camera.
I know others are getting good results from the built-in app, which is why I feel it's an Orange firmware issue, but if you're having trouble getting decent results yourself, even after turning the default sharpness and contrast settings down (again and again - reboot resets to silly default), give coolcamera a try.
here's a zip of about 10 recent pics http://www.sendspace.com/file/3ox7rv
If you want to know what settings I use, give me a shout.
@losborn
http://www.ateksoft.com/ seems to be working fine for me
With regard to coolcamera / hermes camera I have a few questions..
1. Does it hold settings after soft reboot usiong coolcamera software?
2. what is the frame rate on the maximum video out of the main camera?
3. is there any white balance or apperture settings in this model?
I've just ordered a Jas Jam and am curious more than anything. I had no intention of using the camera until I saw a few of these shots.
cheers,

Have you tried the newer Camera application? It works well imho and people have reported that settings stick on it (though to be honest, I've not noticed either way).
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=301629
i believe settings stick on any ROM above 2.x, ie 3.x and wm6.
i have always had issues when lighting is less than perfect, ie to bright or to dark.
but in the main, it works overall well. if i want exotic brilliant photos, use a real camera is the theme.
i also use the webcamera function at ateksoft, which is handy. have the cool camera app, but not really tested or used.
i suppose the moral of the story is, if you drive a road and trail motorbike, dont expect to perform as a road bike or a trail bike, when you buy hybrids you get the jack of all trades master of none scenario, same applies to all sorts on the HTC phones, not a good phone, not a good calendar, not a good computer, not a good camera, not a good music player, but capable of doing all of them to mediocrity.

Maybe so but I think for a phone it does the calendar/camera/music/running add on programs better then most other phones. As a phone, it's not the best but to be able to go out, not bring a phone, PPC, mp3 player, cheap pocket sized point and shoot camera - it's great! Plus I think my only issue with it as a phone is it's bulk. Call quality for me is pretty darned good. It's the best reception of any phone I've ever had in my house. It's my fav phone I've had since my Motorola StarTac

Low quality on my photos

I have been trying my new Trinity and I think it is the best phone I have had. But after comparing some photos with my old K700 I have realized that the quality of them are very low, bad colors, pixeled, etc...
Is it because of the hardware or maybe the software included? Anyone has noticed that?

A rom upgrade, even with an official wm5 rom including a newer camera application can help a lot. Roms with gps normally have a camera upgrade, a newer wm6 rom with the latest camera could be better.
With mine, a wm6 coocked rom, photos are good during dayligts and too yellow in the night. But no pixeled at all, at least at 2M resolution...
Ciao
I have upgraded my phone with WM6 (Indigo version) and it seems the quality of the photos also have been upgraded. Now my photos in night mode are great, always that I don't move the camera, but I think they should be even better. Any software to manage the camera?
i have indigo too and i like the photo quality.i think it´s better than the official rom.
