WM 2003 4.00.01 and GPRS

Hi,
Maybe its an odd question.....
When I press send&receive on my inbox my XDA connects via GPRS to the internet.
So good so far. Then Pocket outlook has finished, it does not disconnect.
Is there a setting, which I missed, or is it a bug?
Please help.

why is it concerned to be a bug.... i don't see it that way. GPRS is imho an "always on" technology. why should one want to disconnect it.
imho wm2003 uses more of that "push" technology that pushes emails ect from the serve to your pocketpc as soon as they arrive. that for the device has to be connected all the time.....

Well simply because GPRS always on = battery concemption = less talk time.
Also sometimes GPRS always could make u miss a call... if there is any data activity and someone calls u at this moment it will sound like ur phone is either busy or OFF.
So i think u should have the ability to d/c ure GPRS session anytime u want!

aehmmm. are you sure you are right?
imho grps on is made possbile with the same mechanism that makes your gsm connected. so there should be no higher power drain. but i can't test that. it's just what i heard.
and you DEFINETLY get no "engaged" on the other side when you call a pocketpc that has a grps running grps connection. i just tested that again. gprs gets suspended when a call comes in. that's all. (i was d'ling a file when i called myself on the phone - it took some seconds more to get the call through though)

Yeah i agree all that is true but u didnt take into consideration some of the Operator settings.
Here my operator settings for GPRS is that the party calling me while i am downloading a file gets an engaged or sometimes OFF tone.
What ure telling is the way it should be ... but its not the case everywhere!

I think GPRS "Always-On" is how the device was intended to be & finally is almost 2years later! :evil:
To further illustrate GPRS has a ALWAYS been advertised as an "Always-On" service from it's conception. In addition almost all Mobile Phones implimenting GPRS technology have had this "Always-On" connectivity behavior from the beginning. It is simply an embarrassment to Microsoft that this standard function available on Mobile Terminals for over a year of the release of the XDA was finally instituted on this device. So this just appears to be something new to XDA users.
It does not effect your battery life any more than having your radio on.
If data cost is your concern use a CSD dial-up connection for your Inbox operations. There is an option in Inbox to choose which connection to use. The CSD function will act exactly as you are wishing it to. It will only take up to about 2.5 minutes of you talk time. I so far have not noticed a substantial increase in speed during Inbox operation using CSD verse GPRS.
To me I was furious that I had to wait as long as I did for the XDA to act like it's lesser Mobile Phone brothers. Personally the freedom of "Always-On" has changed the way I do business amazingly. The amount of freedom it provides me in giving me an almost "true-real-time" virtual office is incredible.
If data connection is a real tool to you, then you wont be able to live without a dedicated connection. If it is a novelty or cool factor, then you will always be worried about accumulating data costs, but don't worry if data usage is going to be successful for providers they are going to have to re-think their price structures (ala T-Mo unlimited) to eliminate or diminish this concern of customers if they want data services to be adopted by subscribers & simply to justify/recoup their cost to build these data networks. So be patient

if you have a program like messenger running it would have to send some data over GPRS once in awhile not sure how much it would be maybe
it's soo little it dont really matter
but if it's like one MB a week with XDA always on and GPRS always on
it would be pricy
a bit anyway

GPRS always on is a good thing, but at leased in Germany it is still very expensive.
So I like to have a option to switch it off.
GPRS monitor is really a cool tool for getting control over the GPRS costs.

As to anwser the above posts about GPRS "always on" be sure that "always on" is used for the devices also that goes into Stand By therefor killing the active connection. Some of the ROMs from o2 and QTEK had this matter solved in the latest upgrades to keep GPRS always ON when device goes into stand by
BUT
What we are discussing here is the ability to d/c when we want! In the QTEK ROM 3.19 the GPRS always on would allow you to stay connected even when the device goes into stand by and also be able to d/c when u want. Also when sending and receiving email the device will connect and d/c as need it.
BUT
this isnt the case in WM2003 where u cant find a d/c button anywhere and that i consider wrong! Also taking into consideration that some countires GPRS is still expensive.
i hope you got my point on this matter - i can assure you its a bug and when talking to someone in the Mobile Division in Microsoft he assured me in an unofficial way that it is a bug...

Sorry to change topics, but it is regarding GPRS. Does anyone have procedures on how to setup the GPRS connection. I loaded WM2003 4.20.1081 (Build 13100) and it seems to work great except no modem connection is setup.

O2 XDA Mini S - using without a SIM card?

Hi everyone.
OK. So, I've got an XDA Mini S and I've just got to the end of my O2 contract, so they've sent me a free phone (which is nice). It's a Walkman phone, which I'd like to use.
Therefore, I'll have to remove the SIM from my Mini S and put it in the new phone (I'm continuing with the same contract, so there's no new SIM). This actually suits me, because although I think the Mini S is a great PDA, I don't think much of it as a phone. Plus, my use of it is pretty heavy, so if I ALSO use it as a music player, the battery's dead in no time at all.
So what I'd like to do is be able to use the Mini S to still do text messages and email, but send and recieve them by connecting to GPRS via Bluetooth through the new mobile (with the SIM in it). Expect I can't figure out how to set up the Mini S to do this. Can anyone help?

I'd think doing the email would be easy... but as most sony phones are a little trashy (in my opinion) I doubt they will do the text message passthrough thingy some of the good phones have, mainly nokias.
To get the email working, you'll need to setup the GPRS connection on your sony one, then turn it's bluetooth on (make sure it's discoverable). Then search for the services supported on it, using the wizard. You're looking for "dial-up networking". Select this, and then try and dial the connection from the bluetooth config panel thingy. If I remember correctly (not done this since back in the WM2003 days), you need to dial *10# or summit from the wizard, then it will connect to the sony phone via bluetooth, and start the GPRS connection. Once it has dialed, just use the wizard as you would have done before.
I'm sorry if ti's a little vague, as I mentioned i've not had to do this for a couple of years. I'm someone will say if i've missed something out...

Well, an idea. Why don't you get the SIM into the miniS and use the Sony as walkman without the SIM? Else, sell the Sony and get yourself multiple (and larger capacity) battery for your miniS?

Well, I initially thought I'd have no use for the new phone, but I like the idea of the music player being the same system as that for answering calls - if I'm listening to music on the new phone, I'm not going to miss a call (and this is something I'm likely to do as it's my work mobile). I have a bigger battery for the Mini S, but it makes the phone into a bit of a lump and still only gets me a day and a half of normal use (which doesn't include listening to music). And swapping the battery means restarting the Pocket PC, which is a bind.
Thanks for your reply, Brins0 - I'll give it a try. I think you might be onto something with the code for the phone to dial into GPRS. I think it might also want a "standard" O2 username/passowrd, though I'm not sure what these are. If anyone else has any thoughts, I'd love to hear them.

Yeah, I know it is good to have a music player with a phone function. However, for my case, its the vibration that alerted me on in coming calls most of the time. It is SMS vibration that I've missed.
Anyway, I'm impressed that you can get a miniS dead in a day and a half without music. You do talk a lot on the phone, huh? I talk on average 30 mins on the phone and it lasted me 3-4 days on a full charge, on a normal battery. Well, anyway, consider the size of the screen and power of the phone, you can't compete with a Sony phone, say W610, which has a rated talk time of 7 hours (gsmarena) and Wizard's 4 hours. Sony *is* pretty good in what they do.
ANYWAY, good news for you is that, I did manage to tried to sync my SE T630 (old one) with my PC before using IR connection using software found on (myt630.net) and I can send SMS (via the phone) using my PC. However, getting the SMS is another story, I think I'll have to do a check-mail thing (eg, pull) on the phone to get new SMSs, it doesn't seems to do a push (that's 3-4 years ago, my memory is failing me). So, I'm pretty sure that Sony's phone is able to get you to send SMSs without problems AND I've seen software for Palm that enables you to send SMS using phone connected via IR and BTooth and I'm sure you get that for PocketPC. So, for SMS you'll probably need to use other software that is meant for real pocket pc (eg without phone function) to send your SMS.
Anyway, let us know of your progress. Like, how good is the Sony phone in terms of battery life with and without the music

Your right about my heavy use of the Mini S. I don't actually make that many calls, but I do use the PDA functions a hell of a lot. I also rely heavily on email for work, so being able to leave the Mini S connect to ActiveSync via Bluetooth has given me a lot of freedom to move around the house - at the expense of flattening the battery pretty quickly. One thing I've noticed already is that the battery does a lot better when it's not connected to a phone network. I wouldn't have expected that to take much power, but there you go.
Anyway, I've figured out how to use the email function through the phone. I set up a new dail-up connection which connects to O2's mobileweb GPRS. The reason I struggled to begin with is that I was entering the APN (on the Mini S) as "mobile.o2.co.uk", which I think would work IF I was connecting directly from the Mini S. BUT, what I needed to do was enter the APN as *99# (found that on the web somewhere) which prompts the PHONE to connect to O2's mobileweb, and therefore allow the Mini S a GPRS data line. Hope that makes sense! Phew!
As for SMS, you're right: I need a third party program to allow that. I was hoping the Text Messages part of the Mini S's Messaging application could be reconfigured, but it doeesn't look likely. Can anyone recommend a good, third party SMS program for Windows Mobile 5?

Instant Messaging Software // AIM

Ive had my Wing for 3 months now, i just this week became interested in further developing my phone into something more of a useable device worth the 100 dollars i pay monthly to keep it running.
one of my only gripes about the standard software has been the lack of alternates. im looking for a program or hack that functions closer to the ichat of the mac for AIM. has any one seen this? If so, please let me know

this is where the Wing lacks big time. I came from the Sidekick which had excellent instant messaging and stayed connected well and was instant as the name implies. The IM software that comes with the Wing uses SMS so it is slow and unless you have unlimited text messaging you are in for a rude awakening. I have tried a few of the program out there including IM+, Palringo, agile, and imov and none of them come close to the functionality or the reliability of the sidekick. IM+ is nice but it constantly disconnects and drives friends nuts because you sign on and off all the time. Palringo is better for this but you can not switch users without losing everything you just typed to someone. even if you go to the contacts list you lose your conversation with whomever you are talking to. Agile would not stayed connected for more than a minute or two and constantly lost connection. imov just flat out didn't work well and would freeze so I didn't get to try it out much. And on top of all this. if you are using a cooked rom like touch it. you will not be able to use these because something required by the programs has been removed and no one here knows how to correct it or at least from what I've encountered. I will be waiting impatiently for my contract to end in a couple months and will be switching to a phone better suited for messaging. as far as PPC phones go the Wing is a good little phone even though slow and lacking memory big time it is not a good phone for those wanting to stay connected. I never thought I would miss my sidekick 3 but by oh boy was I wrong.

well i just got my t-mo wing and i like it i just dont like the aim client on it.disconnects and cant recive aim messages while off-line.is there anywhere i can download the aim client the the sidekick 3 has? witch i thinks is best aim client ever.can recive messages offline,can set away messages,and stays connected,the wing aim client that it brings is very bad. so if anyone knows where i can download the aim client that the sidekicks have plz tell me thank you.

Dodging T-mobile's detection

Hey folks,
First up I know this is against my T'n'C's but we're talking hypothetically here ;-) oh yes and the fact that I was originally sold this contract for connecting my laptop and PSP to the internet even although it's expressly against my T'n'Cs so I don't feel wrong about doing it.
I'm trying to connect my laptop and PSP to the internet via my Vario II (aka Hermes) from t-mobile. Several concerns crop up
1. since i'm not on the pro package I'm not allowed to do this. Ergo t-mobile must not know I'm using a laptop.
How do they detect it?
I suspect VPN on the phone might get round it...although I've had difficulty configuring it.
Would opening a VPN from the laptop after connection decieve t-mobile?
As regards browsing I assume they're just taking the browser information that the laptop's browser gives them. I suppose you can spoof that somehow?
Lastly for the psp I simply want to stream media from my desktop to my psp when I'm on the move using 'pimpstreamer' - I doubt this protocol will be too noticable.
To effect this connection though I'd need to perform the 'wifi AP' hack I've seen talked about on the wiki....
Problem is I can't seem to find Internet Connection Sharing under programs....Is this something that can be tweaked to be invisable under the registry like the GPS module in the settings section?

If you have the unlimited data plan (only $20 a month), simply turn on Internet Sharing via your phone and select "Modem Link" or whatever it's called. Plug in and voila. The PSP, not so sure.

I have a T-Mobile contract also. You shouldnt worry too much. Even if they can detect it, they dont particularly care so long as you dont go over the 1GB fair usage limit. I connect my laptop all the time and have been doing so for the past year and a half. I even went as far as buying a datacard and using that and still no complaints.
Once, I downloaded 4GB of data via my contract when my internet connection at home went down. Not even a peep. Now I only use my phone for basic usage and connect whenever I cant find a free WIFI but I still use it.
In case youre wondering I have Flext 30 with Web n Walk but I only pay 18.75 GBP per month.

There's an awesome program in the development section that actually allows you to turn your hermes into a wifi hotspot. it connects to the internet through the phone's connection, then shares that connection over wifi. It works perfectly for me, although I rarely really need to use it. Very hand; I wish I could remember what it's called. Search "Wifi Sharing" in the development thread and you should find it.

Its against T-Mobile rules to use Internet Connection Sharing?

I got it because I signed up as a Curry's Employee and got a permanent lifetime discount of 50% off.
Yes it is againt their terms of service but as I said.. really doesnt matter.. just dont do anything that would make you jump out. Dont use more traffic than you should. Dont use it for VOIP and dont stream music/video to/from it.
I know what you are talking about because I also use it on my Hermes. It's called WMWifiRouter.

I do it all the time and I've never gotten in any trouble for it. Then again, T-Mo EDGE is usually too slow for me to want to use it on my laptop anyways.

I just use it when there is no WiFi available --- the edge is a bit slow, but still VERY usable. Never had an issue either.
I'm looking into that WMWifiRouter, looks cool as hell.

Your sim works in a datacard? that's cool. How much do those things cost? Never even thought of trying it

Although I guess you couldn't use your phone if your sim is in the datacard. Any workarounds to use both at the same time with same service plan, he he?
T-Mo charges $49.99 for unlimited internet, wow... but only $19.99 if it's unlimited on a phone, could consider adding a new "phone" to your account with unlimited internet and just pop the sim in the datacard and go.

Suppose there's not really a lot of difference between using your phone as a modem and using a datacard mind you. So unless they're pretty cheap I'd probably be best sticking with the varioII
Anyone know about the ICS bit? I've seen people reffer to it before. (I gave my windows mobile version etc on my earlier post btw) at first I thought it would be like the GPS settings in control pannel - hidden by some registry entry by t-mobile (and I can think why they would want to).
However that file reffered too Windows\IntShrui.exe

Ok found ICSinstall.cab on here and installed it, soft reset, and attempted to install the latest version of the WMWifiRouter program (which I finally succeeded in sourcing!).
However I get a message telling me cryptically that it 'cannot be installed' after attempting install. I wonder if this is related to ICS...
I now have the InShrUI.exe file in /windows/ *but* attempting to run it gives:
'The file 'IntShrUI' cannot be opened. Either it is not signed with a trusted certificate or one of it's components cannot be found. You might need to reinstall or restore this file.'
I reinstalled it over itself (i.e. ran the cab again) same error.

Was this the right file? I seem to remember it was dated 11th January 2008??

VC's Gone, instant message using SMS?

VeriChat's gone, which causes problems for me! I have a hermes without a data plan, but unlimited text.
Does anyone know of an AIM and/or MSN client or multi-protocol client that uses SMS instead of data to send IM's? I've been out of luck with searching and getting a little desperate. Before I had service on my phone, I used IM+ after Agile, but without data I don't dare use them unless I'm in wifi with GPRS disabled. I've heard of IM forwarding, but I'd rather have a client with a buddy list.
Any help would be appreciated! I tried to search the forums, but my queries were too small with just AIM, IM and SMS.

The OZ app from ATT.

I've heard generally bad things about OZ's speed since it isn't hardcoded into the device, with IM delays of sometimes two minutes or more! Harsh.
I'm new to using messengers on the phone, as I've only recently gotten service (It'd just been a PDA for seven months until my CDMA contract expired) and I was really hoping to get some kind of AIM or MSN client that uses solely SMS for connecting and sending messages.
Is there nothing I can use? I'm getting slightly desperate.
