I know some of you would be annoyed with me posting a topic which has been discussed on this forum but after searching a lot on this forum i could not decide whether to buy a bluetooth GPS reciever or Tomtom one?
I have tomtom software 5.21 with the maps and dont mind struggling a bit initially ( for the 1st time i mean ) to get the bluetooth GPS running with Exec but just want to ask all of those who are using their Exec with tomtom few questions.
How easy is it to use Exec with tomtom in day to day life?
Has anybody used both and what do they prefer and why?
Which GPS is the best cos i have seen few with 32 channel etc etc?

I've been using TomTom on my Exec since about November last year, and to be honest, I wouldn't even consider getting a full TomTom device.
I've got a BT-77 GPS (about £45 off eBay), wired permanently on in my car (I've also got a second if I need to use it elsewhere), and had NO PROBLEMS WHATSOEVER getting it to work - in fact, I'm bemused at why the whole Bluetooth/GPS issue is such a big one. I simply paired the two, and set up a port - no messing about unhiding the GPS applet etc. Easy.
I've got a Brodit mount in the car - very good. I've also got a Parrot hands-free, so the Exec does everything in the car - phone and sat nav (with Traffic).
Downsides? Well, sometimes the Exec can take an age to start TomTom, but other than that, I'm struggling to think of any.

Same rig as above poster (SPV m5000,Tt 5.21 & BT77 GPS receiver) but did have a little trauma with the Tomtom port problem at first :evil: found the solution here though and now it's all good! Tomtom does suck the life out of that minuscule battery though, so a powered mount or a decent car charger are a must. As for the amount of receiver channels - the more the better (for tracking ability - look for ones with the SIRF III chip-set) i believe. Hope this helps

I have been using my Exec with TTN 5.21 for approaching a year now and use it with a SysOn 20 Channel SiRF Star Bluetooth GPS, brilliant piece of kit.
I wouldn't worry about the high end of GPS channel tracking as 12 - 20 suffices. The only problem that I've experienced was keeping the pairing but otherwise it works exceptionally.

i just bought a holux-236 off e-bay @ £96 inc shipping. Haven't tried it out yet, but read a load of reviews prior to purchasing that sang it's praises. Apparently you can keep it in your glove box and it'll still pick up & stay fixed on sats!
i also have a Holux gpslim 236 this is a great receiver, it has a usb car charger so you can use it with the magician

At ebay I bought a "Bluetooth Nemerix GPS Receiver, 16 Channels", wich came in a nameless package (I can't find any brand on it), and it only cost me €65 inc. shipping.
Only after 2 hours the bluetooth began to stop, and after half an hour it was completely dead. Do you might buy a good-one in stead of a cheap one
I wouldn't recommend the TomTom reciever. They make great software, but the reciever I got from them is tempremental, sometimes it establishes a fix in seconds, and sometimes it takes up to 20 mins.

Elyl, I have the same GPS, it works great when it wants to. The problem i have with this gps is that it tends to lose its BT pairing on my MDA. Its looks ok from BT menu in win2003PE but TT5 does not see it. This means i have to delete the BT profile and recreate it Bit anoying.
Just wondered if you had the same problem or if anyone else does ?

I can't say I've encountered that problem. One thing to bear in mind, which is a fault of TT5 - when TT5 first starts up, and the BT GPS is on, TT5 will report "No GPS device present" until your GPS gets a lock. What it should really say is "No GPS signal".
As I remember, I thought it wasn't paired the first couple of times I used it, but if you actually wait a minute or so the GPS will get a fix, and TT5 will appear to "pair" with it.
So, more than likely the re-pairing you do is unnecessary, it's just that TT5 gives the wrong message when it doesn't have a signal. Another known problem with TT5 is that it will sometimes do a cold start on your GPS after a certain amount of time if it doesn't get a good enough signal... this is unnecessary also, and means it takes longer to get a fix. TT5 is far from perfect!

I use a normal Kirrio...it's all ok.
I see what your saying Elyl,
But after 30 minutes of waiting and resetting the GPS and reloading tomtom, then to delete and recreate the pair and it works within 1 minute makes me think my setup has a flaw somewhere. Will reinstall TT and the BT support.
Anyway back to the topic, the BT-338 is one of the best specced GPS receivers with SiRF 3 chipset for the price. The battery life is excellent too. Ebay is a good place to pick one up from but watch for the carriage !

Never had any problem like this with my BT-338 + TT5 + Magician.
And I dont turn on the Bluetooth settings (you know, the blue icon in the bottom left corner). But the TT5 stills be able to pair it. Never lost the pairing.
Oh btw, I use ROM 1.01 The oldest one. I dont upgrade it because it works fine.

Read the review of that solar GPS on http://www.pocketgps.co.uk - basically, the solar bit is just a gimmick, and not very well implemented. I think the review said something like you'd need to have it in direct sunlight for about 20 hours to get 1 hour of life out of it.

Probably not as good as the Rikaline or the Holux 236 which is by far the best i've tried but for they are nearly double the price
Even uses the same kind of charger as the Wizard so effectively you get a free in-car charger for you PPC thrown in.
I successfully use a generic Nemerix based GPS mouse from adapt. You can find these rather cheap GPS device in many varities (lots of OEM manufacturers) on eBay.
In conjunction with TT5.2 it works like a charm.
Any suggestions for a good light GPS to fasten in the helmet. I have plans to track my routes during mountainbike tours.

OK everyone points at TomTom as the best option...is this so?
Any feedback will be greatly received and if I do go for it, I will probably go for their bundle...

Im using a BT77 Bluetooth GPS. It provides a really great signal even inside, however I have had problems with the wizard, in that I have to drop and then re-partner the device in bluetooth, everytime I want to use it, but Im currently thinking its the MS Bluetooth stack at fault and not the Device, anyone have a similar experience ?

I already have the tomtom wired gps receiver which i use with my ipaq 2210. I know the receiver connector wont fit onto my wizard but is there any kind of adapter that will change it from ipaq to wizard (min usb i think).

hi, i am using TTN 5 on my wizard and MKIII bluetooth GPS, i have used it without any problems, but saying that i had some problems installing it.
but after i updated my to 2.1. its works a treat.

Afraid not. Wired receivers will not work on Wizard/K-Jam etc.. full stop. you need to get a BT GPS receiver.
I picked a cheap one up from www.mobilefun.co.uk for £40 and works a treat. 5 fixes even in car glove box
The Tomtom Bt Gps is the easiest one to connect to the wizard, other brands u may need to set comm ports in Tomtom navigator.
So far I tested Holux SIRF3, Tomtom MK2, Leadtek sirf3, all were working fine.
my Tomtom MKIII works perfectly with Wiz.
I'm using a BT880 picked up on ebay (new) for £30.
Works fine with my qtek (imate rom) and tomtom5.

GET Holux Gpslim 236 and you will not regret it! it is a cheap but TOP model! I have it and it is unbelievably good..

Haha, yeah, I just read his post more carefully this time. So I'll recommend again, TomTom Navigator 5.21 ! That's the best so far and pair it with SiRF Star III chipset Bluetooth GPS receiver
I use TomTom 5.21 in US and it's working great. Heard lots of good things about it for UK too. But I have no idea for China and HK.
I use Destinator PN. Very pleased
I heard TomTom is a way to go when it comes to maps (software) in US and Europe and possibly in China, what about hardware though?

SiRF-III should be the First consideration
I am experimenting with a Globalsat BT-338 with my Wizard (Cingular 8125). I am extremely pleased with the ability of the GPSr to work inside the house, in closed stairwells in office buildings and in densely wooded area. I am having other problems related to my desire to use my investment in Garmin maps with this GPS, but that's another story....
One word of expectations: The user manual is nearly non-existant. Also, the GPS locked up on me once and the only way is to remove the batter (which is easy) and then put it back after a couple of hours. If you face any problem, the tech support and forum moderator at Globalsat sucks, but I will give them points for being prompt with a reply, however canned that maybe. Very cheap at US$130.

I am using iGuidance and an iBlue receiver with my 8125. I get 10 sats from the car and can usually get about 4 from inside my house, enough to get a fix but not really doing much navigation inside my home!
It has paired flawlessly with my device. Best part is that is goes into sleep mode and then wakes up only when the paired device requests data. So that means I can have BT on, on my 8125, use my bt headset and the unit stays in sleep mode. When I open iGuidance that wakes the gps and it gets a fix usually in about 50-120 secs. Most of the time by the time I am out of a parking lot or earlier.
So far the maps from iGuidance have been pretty good. The latest release on their website fixes a 3D display issue. Best part is installation is painless, no copying CAB files to get it installed. So far I only have PA, MD, and DE on it and that is about 115M. The longest run I have had with it has been 6 days of about 20 hours of on time and the rest of the time in sleep mode.
Another vote for TomTom...
The receiver they have is great, too.
TomTom 5.x and Holux 236Slim get my vote - Holux is very quick to get fix, even from inside my glove box - and it shares the same connection as my Wizard for the car charger, should it run out of battery.

You'll need software like Tomtom with a reciever. I'm not sure if the charmer is capable of a wired reciever but for sure a bt reciever will work.

Try to find out if your provider offers an online-service like t-mobile navigate in Germany.
I do not need certain software (costs €€€, needs to be upgraded, needs a card inserted) but I have to pay 2 € per route (all over Europe) plus GPRS-charges.
Bluetooth GPS Mouse with Sirf III is highly recommended. I have a Leadtek GPS mouse (sold as Blue Kit) and this is working fine.

personally i prefer the accuracy of the CP maps (supplied by navteq) to the pretty bells and whistles of TT
for pocket gps advice, visit www.pocketgpsworld.com they do a speed camera database as well, so you know where the accident blackspots are :wink:
Here a list of questions/answers:
1. You DEFINITELY have to find an appropriate GPS receiver. BT does not work sometimes properly because of the "Microsoft-BT-Stack" installed on the MDAc II which means "I send sometimes and sometimes not" Be careful when choosing the right device.
2. How often do you need advice for routing? Twice a month? 5 times a day? (2/mths=online, 5/day=card)
3. If you prefer a card (GPB 150!!!) be aware of updating costs. You have to buy new cards for countries outside yours... And: Every year???
4. To find the right SW test reports on the Internet are very helpful. But be aware of the slow processor of our device - colourful 3-D-maps will slow down the system dramatically.
5. There is also a service called "TMC" - Traffic Message channel - which is provided by the radio stations. This means that you are able to avoid traffic jams. Your device should be able to receive this, it will be more interesting for inbuild radio/navigation-systems ... I have not done much recherche on this - but my first choice was the online service - might be they will be able to update routes in this manner.
6. - off topic: Here in Hamburg we have a street where the one-way-direction is changed twice a day - as I remember: at 4 pm outwards until 6 am (?) and vice versa. As I was told this is the only street in D where this happens - I will try that soon and report.

regards traffic updates, forgot to say that alk europe (copilot people) do 2 years free subscription to traffic master live with their complete packages (bt gps and software/maps on sd card).
i have never had connection probs with the CP supplied BTGPS3 reciever AS LONG as you remember to switch on the reciever before enabling BT on your mdac2 (once youve run through pairing the devices within the CP UI
i also succesfully use memorymap with the CP reciever for satnav when on foot in the hills which did take a bit of fiddling to set up the BT to go through a virtual serial port, but once done, equally as reliable)

In Australia I've been sucessfulling using Destinator software ware with a GlobalSat BT338 GPS reciever on the imate JAM/XDA Mini.
Connected up fine, along with a Jabra BT headset at the same time.
Also in Australia using Tom Tom 5.21 and Holux GR 232 with no problems.
hi, got an exec and been using it for a year now and still loving it as of october i am going to be driving a taxi so, wondered what peoples advice would be, is the exec reliable and usable enough to use as sat nav for my taxi? iv trawled through the forum and read lots about the tom tom issues and im wondering whether or not to just buy an independant tom tom device and keep my exec free as as phone? i will be using my o2 bluetooth headset whilst driving and will need to be able to take calls on it.
also if you think i should stay true to my exec and tomtom her up, any suggestions on where to buy from and best gps unit etc? seen THIS on ebay, was going to use a copy of my mates tom tom but, thinking maybe it would be more reliable to just buy a genuine copy????

To be honest Tomtom works perfectly on the XDA Exec. I have a MDA Pro(T-mobile version) and i have no problems. At first there were some problems with trying to setup the bluetooth gps recievers with tomtom but that was before version 5.21 was released.
Using the phone at the same time as running tomtom is easily done. the gps reciever does not interfere with a bluetooth headset whatsoever. I have a sony erricsson HBH-300 bluetooth headset with my MDA Pro and i always take calls while using tomtom.
As it goes with the retail version of tomtom the only difference you will get is that you will have the option to subscribe to live traffic updates.
The item you have seen in ebay looks quite good. i have the same gps reciever as that deal which i know is really good but as for the holder you may want to consider getting a holder specific for the Exec as you may want to put it in landscape mode when not using tomtom.

The screen quality is far superior and it works like a charm
I've been using both TomTom and iGo on my Qtek9000, they work very well. I think I prefer iGo, but it's just a matter of taste I guess.
Make sure to get version 5.21 of TomTom, otherwise a bluetooth GPS reciever won't work.
hi, I use my universal,mda pro, as a sat nav and it works perfectly no issues whatsoever. I'm running tt5.21 with map of uk plus v632 the gps reciever is holux gpslim 236 which is brilliant I highly recommand this one as to the mount I have pdahut holder which does its job but there is 2 probs with it..putting the device in and out of the mount involves two hands and the stability. plus the mount is passive one. all after all is a good combination I'm very happy with it. I cannot comment on using bt headset cos I m not using yet but I am experiencing huge lags answering the phone while navigating..I use wired headset that came with the universal.
